As a famous poet from Rio, Vinícius de Moraes once said: For us brazilians, living abroad is good, but is sh... And living in Brazil is sh... but is good.
I was born in Rio de Janeiro, in Leblon, and I can say with confidence that my people are so incredibly positive and happy, despite the hardships. It's so inspiring.
As a brazilian who lives in a total different part of the country (Gramado town), thank you for demystifying life in the favela. We can all see now how many good people live in those places.
When in Brazil I mixed with the poor and the rich. I absolutely adored the poor, they were honest, true loving people. The people who I really struggled with were the rich.their arrogance, their way of life and racism shocked me. Guess we call it in the UK new money.
The funny thing to me is, as an American, if I visited Brazil or really any other place, the LAST thing I'd do is go " Hey can somebody take me to the slums?!" ... the first thing I'd ask someone is "Hey bro, where do all the hot chics hang out ?? Thanks!" Lol.
@@Ser_Arthur_Dayne I live in the south of Brazil, we don't have many favelas, so I think you should come here, there are a lot of hot girls hahaha, we have a kind of party we call "raves", it's usually where the best girls go. edit: Another good party is the “Planeta Atlantida”, where all the people from the south get together once a year, it's a huge event.
@@kapella9592 Bro I'm definitely down for a Brazilian rave! I am a fall-down drunk, and usually pretty easy to get along with - but I am just as likely to get drunk and wake up with a hot chic as I am to get drunk and wake up captured by some gang of robbing murderers who sent the hot chic to drug me, then get my ass kicked and robbed and wake up in an alley somewhere. Good times, good times! Let me know what time the party starts! Woooohooo!
Your videos matter, my friend. My wife and I were just in Rio last week and at the top of Corcovado, we ran into Barbara, who was giving a tour at Christ the Redeemer. I recognized her from your video when I heard her speaking Italian and it was such a pleasure to meet her and thank her for all the good she is doing in the world. While we were in Brazil we toured Rocinha as well, and it is as vibrant and beautiful as your video describes. I donated 50 Euros to Barbara's project. Thanks for making this content man, keep it up!
Great video. I lived in that area right next to Rocinha and Vidigal for 10 years. Nearly all of the people who worked for more well off families as housekeepers, cooks, nannies and drivers, lived in either Rocinha or Vidigal. The same for the workers in supermarkets or hair/nail salons, restaurant workers, drivers, barraca stands at the beach, in the “nice” areas, but they live in the favelas. To live in Rio is extremely expensive. And they have their own families to support. They work hard.
When I was in Rio I entered two favelas. The first one with a Brazilian friend to hike up ‘Dois Irmões’. It was super chill, we took a mototaxi up the hill through the favela. The second one I entered alone, thinking that I already know how it works. This time I also wanted to hike up the hill the favela was built on. In retrospective this obviously wasn’t such a good idea. Even the locals, e.g. my mototaxi driver asked me wth am I doing here. He didn’t even know were I wanted to go lol. Nevertheless, he took me up the hill. Were I got off there was a women who my driver asked something. The women too didn’t know the path I was looking for to hike up either. And she also told me that I am crazy entering the favela alone, it’s dangerous. But, instead of telling me to immediately leave the favela she even showed me around a little bit and I enjoyed beautiful views of Rio. So, all in all it probably was not the best idea to enter the favela without a local but therefore got to experience their incredible hospitality and I felt that they genuinely cared for my safety.
I'm just glad you didn't get hurt. Rio's slums are really different from one another, specially regarding safety and entertainment. There are so many different criminal groups dominating different parts of the city and they treat people and tourists very differently. But all in all it's nice you got to enjoy nice views and good hospitality
@@heronboaventurabelmokandra9575 Yes, you are totally right. I came to realize that not every favela is the same. There is safer en less safer ones, more touristy and less touristy ones.
@@harzerroller100 Very interesting. In the next video, we go to a different favela that was way more intense than this one. The vary hugely. Thanks for sharing and glad you are all good :)
@Aldo Steinbach you are so right. Most vloggers only focus on the favelas. Therefore, sending a message Brazil is only slums. The wealth is only touched upon for a few seconds. there is also an entire group of people in between.
Been to Rio de Janeiro twice, and they are some of the most welcoming people I've ever known. It's definitely a place everyone needs to see in their life - history, beauty, and fantastic food.
You know, I've been watching a lot of youtube travel videos over the last few years, but if there's one guy I'd like to sit down with and have a beer, it'd be you. Great content as always and very genuine. Keep up the good work!
Many think of favelas as a place of danger and drug dealers because of the sensationalist media, but 98% of the population are good people. We visited Rocinha a couple months ago and even though we walked by drug dealers with guns often we didn't feel in danger at all. Cool vid. Thanks guys!
I'd have to disagree, if the media actually had any brains they would just run Nick's video here on their Networks, since it actually shows how good a socialist community is great''''.
The reality is that the midia sells a wrong image of RIo... 'Wonderful city' my ass. Of course the majority of the people are good people. To say that only because 'you felt safe' walking by drug dealers with guns and you didnt felt danger is such a disgrace of an argument. ANd people here in the comments are still romanticizing the shit that place is.
Thank you for this videos! Even though I'm Brazilian, I don't get to travel around my own country so often, so your videos are actually allowing me to know parts of my own country! Keep going with the great work!
The one thing I really liked about Brasil when I was actually vacationing (before I lived there) was the fact that there were no 'resorts' catering to North American tourists. It's actually a good thing for Brasil that North America thinks it's too violent. Keeps away the rifraff, spoiled idiots, and those who will do nothing but complain about the lack of english spoken. It took me 4 months to become conversationally fluent, and I found it pretty easy. Com certeza, eu amar meu segunda pais.
Thank you for spreading awareness Nick. I just donated to their project and I'd like to call out to everyone: if you have even one dollar to spare, do it, it goes a long way.
I honestly "love" how these foreign folks come to Rio and excitedly and fearlessly enter the favelas to explore it while we, folks from Rio ourselves, are scared like hell to even get close to it. 😂
Yep im from Venezuela and this dude went to Petare most dangerous slum in Venezuela and one of the most dangerous in Latin america i have never even tried to get slightly close to Petare but he went in with political parties who help the needy in there and he went with people who knew the hood so he was lucky he didn't get killed at sight he really is risking his life doing this I'm sure those slums in Brasil are as dangerous as the slums in Venezuela i don't recommend anyone to go there.
Love watching a video with this perspective. So many people have the wrong idea about a Brazil or Rio because of what they've heard. First hand accounts are always more informative. Thanks for the great content!
The problem is who 'enforce' these laws. They have the death penalty and tribunals of crime. They don't get lawyers and the judges are drug traffickers. They criticize the legal system and then they create the most unfair legal system in the world. Many innocent children are sentenced to death in these kangaroo courts. The hypocrisy is suffocating:(
Love your videos brother, every video it makes me feel like I'm in that Country doing the small things they do. I can stay in my couch and see the wonders of the world Thanks
Great content! My respect for Barbara’s project! It’s really inspiring to see such a generous person that dedicates her live to change the future of this great nation! Big thanks to you my friend who brought this incredible reflection for everyone of us!
I did this tour in 2019 around the same Favela and can confirm it’s the biggest eye opener ever. Yes Brazil is dangerous but tourist hot spots are the main dangers where u get bag snatchers. Rochinha is beautiful, the people are beautiful and the food is beautiful. If you want to do a tour like this just check for a local guide on Air BnB
Rio is really intriguing and mysterious for foreigners(even for brazilians) but Brasil is huge, there are a lot of beautiful and a bit safer places that you could visit.

Just can’t thank you enough for this realistic and sometimes heavy view. What shines the most everywhere are the kaleidoscope of welcoming loving people.
This video made me so nostalgic i feel like crying. I was born and raised in a very similar place to these favelas, but "fortunately", it went on and quickly evolved into a modern and wealthier area along with many other places around the country. Everything is more accessible and the "quality of life is better", but life is certainly not easier. I do miss the humbleness, the friendly and family oriented culture... I miss how there were less things to worry about and how your whole world was just a small community of people who were very close throughout your life. This channel always does a beautiful job at capturing so much of the depth and nuance all our cultures have.
Good job dude, I just got back from Brazil a couple of days ago, 3 weeks vacation, and I love this country. It can be the greatest country in the world if only a few things change. Obrigado, for sharing this with the world!
Thanks for showing the Brazilian reality to the whole world. Our population has a lot of difficulty, but we're hopeful, believing in a better day. Hugs from Brazil!
I visit Rocinha a couple of weeks ago and it was so intresting. Obiviously being able to visit and have a guide show us around means that its a relatively safe favela, but even still it showed how there are some stereotypes and misconceptions about favelas that have been exaggerated to the world outside of Brazil.

Awesome documentary on Brazil Nick. Real and raw footages.
Thanks brother!

Thank you. Yes, very hard working people.
É verdade!
@Aldo Steinbach you are so right!

Many think of favelas as a place of danger and drug dealers because of the sensationalist media, but 98% of the population are good people. We visited Rocinha a couple months ago and even though we walked by drug dealers with guns often we didn't feel in danger at all. Cool vid. Thanks guys!
Totally agree. Of course there is danger and threats but there is also so much good. Thanks for watching :)
I'd have to disagree, if the media actually had any brains they would just run Nick's video here on their Networks, since it actually shows how good a socialist community is great''''.
Because Rocinha is the tourist favela
The reality is that the midia sells a wrong image of RIo... 'Wonderful city' my ass. Of course the majority of the people are good people. To say that only because 'you felt safe' walking by drug dealers with guns and you didnt felt danger is such a disgrace of an argument.

I think they meant that if somebody steals something inside the favela the robber is going to get his hands cut, he said there are some laws

I visit Rocinha a couple of weeks ago and it was so intresting. Obiviously being able to visit and have a guide show us around means that its a relatively safe favela, but even still it showed how there are some stereotypes and misconceptions about favelas that have been exaggerated to the world outside of Brazil.
