I have a diamond in the rough 208k mi 02 gmt800 2500hd 2 door 8 ft 4x4 lq4 truck but I have the nv4500 transmission NP261 mechanical tcase with G80 4.10 14 bolt
Also a major issue with these models is the brake lines. The lines tend to rust out frequently. GM did not use stainless steel lines.
Yep. The lines corrode as they run up the inside the frame at the wheel wells.
Crazy. I have an 02 Silverado 2500HD 6.0, gasser ofc, 250k miles and never had any if these problems. Guess I'm lucky. Great truck though.
Got an 04 with 170k 2500HD gas as well thing runs mint
Put 475K on my 02 gas motor 2500 HD.
Same story on my 04, things been a champ since new
I have a 2001 with 250,000 miles on it I'm taking my main seal is leaking it's got the 60 Gasser in it as well if it's not that anybody have any ideas about what it might be
I’ve replaced my fuel pump on 2000 Tahoe , fuel gauge was all over the place.. thank for the tips, have an awesome day, 2021 just around the corner ...keep pushing forward

I think you very much for your very intimate breakdown of a first generation Chevy 2500 heavy duty I'm normally a Ford guy and I'm going through some changes in my life so I found a Chevy 2500 heavy duty been maintenance out of California and a couple of the small issues that I was wondering about you complied with an answer with great information dictated but not read PostScript I thank you for everything that you do keep up the good work
So far my 2003 problems have been...Diesel Lift pump, grounds in general, 4wd front actuator, transfer case motor, A/C damper controller, parasitic voltage draw through stereo Amp, brake lines, brake booster seal, rockers. For some reason, I still love my truck.
Very Helpful! I have many of these issues at this moment. Thank you!
Love my 04. Belt,Alternator,Hub Assembly,and a cluster. 195 thousand.
I just got a 2004 Silverado WT 4x4 in red and it’s just gorgeous, only got rust by the rocker panels.
Thank you so much! Just bought one and wanted to know what to watch out for. Excellent information!
Hey thinking about purchasing one for my first car. Any chance you think i’ll have a problem putting gas in her? It’s an 8 cylinder extended cab.
Thanks
It should be a good truck, we have one that tows our trailers that are way over it’s gvwr, but it still runs great after 15 years
Hey Len, would that issue with the DTRL be something that could happen in other cars as well? I seem to change bulbs an awful lot on my 2005 Vibe? Just curious. Thanks
I bought my 2500hd new in 2003. Love it! 272,000 miles. Still strong. The heat shield was an early problem. Rattle rattle rattle. JB weld took care of it.
Picked up an 03 extended cab 4x4 with 165k miles with a leaking hydro booster. It’s just one simple seal but boy it’s a pain to get the bolts from inside the cab. Gas line rusted at the connection under driver side- not all line just at the connection, weird. Upper control arms rubber gone to hell. Strong engine but new spark plugs desperately needed, old ones formed a ball at the end due to gap widened creating hot sparks. It had a slipping first gear shift to second, I did a valve body mod with Superior shift kit and a TCC sonnax valve with ptfe o ring, flushed 4gal of fluids. Transmission is now strong and shift nicely. Rear differential was screeching at startup, new gear oil fixed the issue.
Three out of five, still a great truck.
Yes you are right, 3 out of 5 is good guess what I've got piece of shit truck silverado 2500hd
Let’s not forget the carpet of the headliner peeling off 😆
I think the main Point of the video is the mechanical issues and not the interior.
Great video.
Yeah I bought a 2004 2500HD 6.0 in March of this year and last week after driving 78mph for 150 miles on I 40 I pulled into a store parking lot, went shopping with my 11 yr old daughter and we hopped back into the truck. As soon as I popped it into reverse and turned the wheel, my right front side of my truck dropped to the ground. Luckily for me a certified mobile mechanic happened to be walking by and shimmied underneath and said (if I remember correctly)☺ that my ball joint had broke away from my control arm but that he could fix it. He went to the auto parts store, rented the pressure tool, bought the part or parts and fixed my truck in the busy parking lot at night FOR FREE! Many blessings to this gentleman🙏 He says it's a common Chevy problem. Is that true and what should I do now? Go to an alignment shop and have them check all the components to the front end of the truck? I haven't driven it since I got it back home. I'm kinda scared of the truck now. First truck I've owned. It has 186,000 miles on it with a newer transmission installed before I bought it. What do you think guys? Oh and I just bought taller tires for it, not wider tho.
Take it to a reliable mechanic if you're afraid of it, and you want to keep it. Or sell it
Make sure to grease all the zerk fittings regularly or have someone do it. Get an alignment and ask them to check all the suspension component while they have it up. These are wear items that need maintenance, and looking at regularly.
My uncle has never had many major issues with his 2006 chevy silverado 2500 HD with the Duramax diesel engine with the allison transmission with almost 350,000 miles on it.
My Silverado 2005 6.6 diesel only went thru 1 set of injectors it has 568000 miles on it runs like a champ
this is one of the best trucks I've ever owned stock 6.0 at 515000km currently and pulling cars/trucks on trailer daily..
Wow nice to know
That was good info thank you.
Great video!
+Gustavo Medrano Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
just bought a 2000 silverado 2500hd and the abs has a problem. wondering if this is something i could fix myself or just have my mechanic take a look. slipping brake pedal
Yo Glen got a question n I thinking about placing a 6.0 motor and transmission n a 99 suburban ls. Would it work with and without CPU being rewired
Thanks a million for grand strap issues.
Replace with an insulated flexible ground wire. Cost to GM is a big deal, they're trying to keep prices down. At our level of fixing things, a piece of scrap wire costs nothing.
My dash issue is that the hour counter rests to 9 hours. Right now i have 115,000 or so on the odometer and 13 hours. My truck is a 2006 HD2500 4X4 extended cab, with a long bed. The service engine light has been on for 10 years. I think the lights on because of the K&N air filter that i put in about 13 years ago. I've come accustomed of the darn light, i don't even pay attention to it. The only thing that I've done to the truck since owning it, i bought it new, is the K&N, new double din radio, serviced the transmission, oil and filter. I haven't changed the spark plugs, or wires. The darn metal covers make it impossible to remove the wires. It still has the original Dexcool in it too. That'll be taken care of after the first of the year.
Great video! 👍👍 🇨🇦

I have a 05 accord LX model and I have a OB2 reader and it said to change the TPS sensor and I did but I know I did something wrong because it’s idling High and my transmission is changing hard all of a sudden
I'd be more concerned about the fact the brake lines will rot out even in areas without significant snow/salt then any of this. It's usually a bad sign when there's so much demand for it that companies are manufacturing pre-bent kits to replace every brake line on a vehicle.
I’ve owned 4 of these for a long time and haven’t had a problem. I’m not in the rust belt either.
@D.Jones, same. 2003 2500 eclb 6.0 gasser, live in the south 125k currently on her and no issues with lines, or anything! Except for typical guage cluster. Also own 15 cclb duramax and its light years ahead of the old gmt800 platform but this 2003 truck she's still one of the best trucks I've ever owned. Have absolutely no plans of getting rid of her. Had a black 1996 suburban 5.7 w/barn doors and that was a great truck too. Let that one go back in 2006. Regret it
Out of four of these i currently own, I would add tow haul wire breaks and button doesn't work unless you attach wires or buy a new shifter, and definitely blower wires cant handle what they are suppose to be doing and blower works on certain numbers, usually only on three. I never even put it on five, but it stops working on its own too
ive done my tow haul wire twice , re routed it 2nd time and heat shrinked the connection been fine since , ur blower sounds like the resistor tho , my old 98 it would only work on hi when the resistor had gone bad
I have been thinking of making a offer on one thats been sitting, 2002 1 ton dually, 170k km, been sitting for 3 maybe 4 years, needs 4 new tires, and the frame is solid but needs cleaned up, and just a little bit of work and tlc, otherwise seems in very good shape, has had injectors already done too, any suggestions? I don’t really have a purpose for one of these but it would be a dream truck i live in the salt belt i wouldnt plan to drive it in the salt, and just overall preserve and enjoy it,
Yes I have a 03 Silverado 6.0 with a code p0650 faulty engine light I'm not sure how to fix it the light comes on every once in awhile and goes back out and now I can't pass smog help mr. Wizard
My gages clutser not working at all, I have done many time relearn processes no good, I sent my gages to the electronic shop they had fixed it still not working 😕 do you know any other trick or tread
Can that ground wire cause the brakes to stay engaged constantly without the brake pad pressed?
My 02 gasser always takes at least 2 solid turns of the key to start and my gas gauge doesn’t work. If I replace the fuel pump do you think it will fix it?
It should. Only use acdelco fuel pump, very important
Turn key on wait a 5 seconds, then crank. Gives time for fuel psi to build if have leaky injector or fuel pump
I got a question my transmission gave out day ago and was only drive 25 slowly going up to 40 at stop light I and nothing I thought truck die out after min started moving is it ,I turn it on this morning and it driving normal but with the check engine light on , what could it be ?
I seem to have issues with my front hub going out. On my 2005 Silverado 2500HD.
Can you guys do a video on how to replace the power steering pump on this style truck? 2001 2500HD Silverado?
+UtePride8 We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
@@1AAuto Thank you!
Got every problem you named right now
But overall are these good trucks I’m getting ready to purchase one with a plow?
On my 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD the light is really dim you can barely see the the park the reverse neutral and drive why is that
My 04 Silverado z71 won’t go into 4 hi. It blinks 3 times and goes into auto 4wd. 4 low engages perfect. Any ideas on what it could be?
You in neutral?
Re ABS: is this suggesting the ABS light the (bad ground) causes the light to turn on, and the ABS and brakes are not affected, or is there An ABS system problem?
wondering this myself
the ground under the drivers door is a big issue with the abs on these trucks, but it effects alot of other things too. and weirdly enough one thing can act up because this ground is bad, but not affect other things.
+kenman1717 Thanks for the tip!
is this an easy fix?
@@longjonz88 Yes, remove the bolt on the body mount where the grounds connect, clean up with scotch brite, put back on with some dielectric grease (tuneup grease) to keep from corroding. Easy peezy to do
I’ve replaced the actual motors on the gauge cluster. It did the trick! Can you do a video on the trailer button on the shift handle?
Exactly on the gauge cluster. They're called stepper motors. De-solder old ones, solder new ones. There are a bunch of RUclips videos showing the procedure.
Yeah unfortunately the motors for the gauges going bad is a pretty common thing with the instrument clusters in these trucks. I spent seven years working at Delphi building clusters for these trucks and other GM vehicles and there were some supplier quality issues with the stepper motors
‘06 Duramax coding cylinders #3 and #8 as being open after replacing all 8 glow plugs. After switching #3 and #1, #3 still showing code fail as open circuit. Soooo, I assume GP’s are good. What do I do next?
Thanks for your help-JohnyB
+JohnyB We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
heres a question for you. Raining heavy yesterday and my old 2004 GMC sierra ran into many deep puddles and standing water. Suddenly the motor started to miss and cough and sputter like it wasn't getting fuel. under throttle it seemed to smooth out a little. It soon got worse. would not stay running at a stop light. Stalled 10 times at least before I got to my destination where it promptly died. It would restart but only run for 30 seconds then died again and again and again. Put it on check engine and got massive errors. sensor after sensor errors including bad bank 1 and bad bank 2 (fuel injectors?) just multiple errors including pretty much every sensor on board!!!! what can cause this just because the under carriage got really wet?
I'm having the same issue with my 05 Hd
@@cdb122980 Ever figure it out?
Bank 1, Bank 2 are oxygen sensors for catalytic convertors. Bank 1 on drivers side, Bank 2 passenger side (US Right side driving) Sensor 1 ahead of cat, sensor 2 behind it. So B1S2 is drivers side downstream of cat
I have had 2 2002 Chevy Silverados and both of them
I've fixed all these. I guess my 03 6.0 is good to thrive
The driver side driving light burns out on all of those pickup trucks I've seen many including my own is because they use a bulb from the brake light which is brighter than the running light but by doing that the brake light filament is not design for a constant burn therefore overheating overloading the socket and burning it up. So after replacing your burn up socket try switching the pigtails to pull on the running light circuit of the bulb instead of the brake light turn signal circuit of the bulb and no more issues. I actually switched mine over to the old school bulbs with the round bottoms from like the 80s instead of the flat plug-in bulbs. I really absolutely despise flat type of bulb connector that are now being used the old ones that are round are so much better
My ABS light came on my brakes were failing I change front pads rear pads then I found out there's emergency brake drum I fixed I put new brakes still having the same issues
Any starter problem
Mine off and pops up a Titan gas cap warning when I go downhill.
My 2003 wirh a 6.0 hasa slite tick or rattle when accelweating that goes away when rpm is highee. Any ideas?
Dont use 10w30 oil if you are. I think they take 15/30. Unless its completely worn out it will do that.

My brother has a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 z71 4 wheel drive quad cab. He is having trouble with the battery running down. What causes the battery to drain down real fast?
Alternator needs to be replaced, thats what charges the battery.
I had a problem with my truck whwn I turn on parking lights it only in the back not the fronts parking are on can yiu help me pls 😭
Same issue here
Biggest problem I had with my 03 2500 was transfer case pump rub (very common) which caused me to have to replace all bearings, seals, pump, and back half of case. Also did pump housing upgrade. Other than this only real issue not covered under warranty was gauge cluster which was a quick and easy replacement.
Just had the same problem with my 02 2500hd (gas) did you have to replace the rear output shaft seal?
Did the pump rub create a hole in the case? If so, what mileage?
Merchant automotive sells a kit for " pump rub". I just rebuilt mine. 2004 chevy 2500hd 170k.
2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500hd. Brake lights stuck on. Pull the ctsy fuse, brake lights go out. Replace ctsy fuse, brake lights come back on, go inside and press the dome override button on headlights switch, press brake pedal, interior lights come on. Remove chsml fuse, rear brake lights go out, chmsl stays lit. I'm lost. Can't find the problem anywhere.
I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado pick up 2500 series I’m having an issue with temperature going down to 160 degrees while driving on the highway the gauge fluctuates from 200 to 160 when that happens the engine hesitates and when I come to a stop light to make a left turn sometimes the engine shuts off and when I try to start the engine oh I have To push the Excelerator to the floor before the engine will start what would cause this
Take it to a shop where they will have a nice car scanner that they use to diagnose it.
you can have all these problems at the same time and still get to work...
Also knock sensors on the 6.0s
Water pump, rotors, wheel bearing hub assembly, auto tensioner pulley, shocks and struts. Every other month 1 by 1 they went out and not In That order
2000 Silverado. On start up 4x4 selector 4 high came on, would not go into 2 high. Shut off engine, restarted, works fine. Replaced selector switch, problem solved. 2004 Sierra. Service four wheel drive came on, selector switch inop. Shut off engine, restarted, works fine. Replaced selector switch, problem solved.
How fo you fix the Chevy lean.
2000 Chevrolet 2500 4x4 454 with 180k miles, I'm fixing to buy one from my boss for $1000 needs some work and title work I'm gonna use it to haul cars and other stuff, what should I fix first it runs and drives
I have a 1500 and my abs was tweaking for years the light will come on and off never a serious issue till I hit a parking car about a month ago if your abs light is on just take out the fuse in the fuse box till you get it fixed remember you can drive perfectly fine without abs you don’t need abs but if it means that much to you get it fixed but in the mean time get that fuse out of there because it will fuck with your breaks at low speeds and make them grind and the pedal will bounce up and down and you can’t stop the truck lucky I was only going like 2 mph and it was just a little dent on my front bumper. But the other car had a fat dent
Hello I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado LS. I wish people would do a video about those trucks cuz you can't not find them on the Internet can find other videos about trucks when you can't find a 2004 Chevy Silverado
Look for close years. Nothing really changes much year to year except electronics
2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 extended cab long bed on 38s like new 4x4 perfect condition 225k miles little rust under door bad power steering pump worth it?
05 2500 HD not shifting properly
Check engine light on when this happens
I only had service 4wd that was little motor on side of tcase, Ive had wheel bearings and Knock sensors , oil cooler lines, but thats it 2002 HD 6.0 had none of your problems. It only plowed commercially and towed commercially and road trips.
And try not to touch the glass of the bulbs anytime of install..
+Ken freedom is my choice Thanks for the tip!
Never had any of these problems guess I'm luck
And exhaust bolt heads breaking off.
I have at least 4 broken off exhaust manifold bolts on my 03. I've debated just buying new cylinder heads so I don't have to fight the old broken off bolts lol.
Damn same issue here 3 bolts broken 😡 so far the one by the firewall is a bi+ch
Also they have rear main seal oil leaks
+Mike H Thanks for the feedback!
I am surprised at all they did not nention.
One... These LS motors are horrible to have oil pressure issues, many say it is the oil pickup tube o ring, but i suspect the pressure release valve in the pump is often the trouble. The bad thing is how hard they are to cha ge especially on 4x4.
Two, the stepper on the fan motor. They start losing the abilities in lower settings. You will typically see them only woeking on a couple of places mine was 4th and 5th speed. It is not too bad to replace once the cover is off.
Three a d a huge one is the oil pressure sending unit at the back top of engine. Pain to get to and goes out often.
Four, someone already mentioned the brake lines rust out, but also gas lines rust easily, and the cab corners also rust super fast. Seems like chevy would have made them more resistant being a work truck with 4x4.
Five, the sensors for the gas fumes go bad. The one most common is the one near the gas tank. They often get clogged, tge dumb thing is chevy put them at several different locations and sometimes like on my truck it is nearly impossible to get out.
Six, the drive by wire or heard ir callsd "fly by wire" systems suck! I have had lots of trouble with the throttle boddies, but the sensors between the gas peddle and throttle body has to read very closly or it sends your truck into the dreaded "reduced power mode" aka limp... this is very dangerous id you are pulling a load.. you cant go anywhere if it goes in this mode when hauling. Super sketchy/scary in traffic. It should have a bypass button to get you out of traffic at least.
Seven, someone else mentioned this... the hydronost on these trucks is crap. WhEN it goes out and it will go out it takes out both your power steering and your brakes! It usually starts leaking well before and if you are putting in lots of power steering fluid... that is likely the problem.
Eight, everything seems to leak on these trucks. The oil cooler lines will not be easy to change either WHEN they go out.
And all of the ones mentioned in the video. ESPECIALLY the guage cluster. It os usually a connection issue. The stepper motors are bad to go out too. This guy made out like oh just have it relearn the cluster lol that is not likely the problem. And he said "replace the cluster" well they are NOT cheap like everything else, get ready to spend.
One addition tid bit...If you have lots of flickering on the lights, check to see if someone tried to use LED bulbes, this truck does not like those bulbes. It also does not like any of the add on things that work off the trailer hitch wiring. It will do some crazy things.
I al.ost forgot how these trucks seem to squeak so easily. Seems like the front end components need to be changed far too often.
Problem 1 add a ground wire frome eny metal part availvable to you existing ground and it will by fixed very much it happens cause of a mising wire cut or lose screw is comon .... .... you welcome
will try this for my always-on-bright-light-indicator. THanks.
My truck rusts so badly it has a hole in it my frame rusts i am in West Virginia the state of rust
Someone wants to trade me this for my Firebird should I?
I don't trust GM, idk if I should or not. I need another opinion.
How is that the first generation Silverado 2500? The Silverado model was introduced in 1988
Because the Silverado in 1988-1998 wasn’t the truck it was a package the 1988-1998 Chevy Trucks where still C/K models not Silverado’s
Actually the "Silverado" package goes back to the Square bodies. The OBS (88-98) just went by "c-2500" or "k-2500". the 99 (2000 for the 2500 series) were known full on as Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra and then the weight after it. I currently have an 87 C-10 with the Silverado package, an 88 GMC C-2500 TBI 350, an 88 Chevy C-1500 4.3 with the Cheyenne package, a 99 GMC Sierra SL 1500 4.3 2wd, an 02 Chevy Silverado 1500 4wd 4.3, and an 02 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 6.0 4wd. My 2wd trucks are used for my landscape business, both of my 02 are my roadside service trucks, and my 87 squarebody is my weekend/off the clock warrior.
Oil pressure issues? Rear main seal leaks? Half tons 4l60's sucks. Every single interior plastic warling or paint rubbibg? Good trucks tho.
Gauge cluster, easy fix. Bad solder joints on mother board. Pull cluster, separate mother board after you remove needles. Have a tv repair shop inspect and re-solder as needed the resistors and diodes on the mother board. Plug in motherboard to re-zero stepper motors, and install needles to zero.
Install back in truck.
Y'ALL SHOULD'VE BOUGHT A FORD!!!!!!

+Jerry Rigging ShadeTree Thanks for the feedback!
Um rust.
Lol literally every Chevy truck or suv of this era is sporting one drl.
this isnt a first generation silverado fyi
+Cole Keightley Thanks for the feedback!
I guess it’s the 1.5 gen lol
Technically it’s not a first Gen and it’s not a second Gen. everyone calls it a 1st gen tho
Square body's were right?
I can't believe you didn't mention transmission rebuild in this list.
All GM transmissions will start slipping, Losing gears, Eventually not moving at all. Ultimately it'll require rebuild or replace.
The 4l60s were known for this, not so much the 4l80s or Allisons.
340,000 kms on my 4l60e i abuse the fk out of it
I have a 2004 GMC 2500HD , bought new , with the 4L80E transmission, 588,000 miles on it , serviced regular at 50,000 miles , very reliable and solid machine .
