Blacksmithing - Forging a Wrought Iron Megalodon Shark Tooth

  • I saw some fellow blacksmiths here on RUclips making shark teeth out of damascus and though I'd try the same but with wrought iron. It also provided me with a good opportunity to figure out the different finishes you can do with wrought iron as I will be making more things from it in the future. I'm very happy with how this piece turned.
    Thanks for watching!

    This is an interesting piece of work. I wonder why wrought iron have those pattern on them when etched with acid. It's like damascus but different. Would you care to explain what's going on with the material itself?

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  3 года назад +9

      Basically wrought iron is quite impure and has ton of slag and minerals etc, (atleast compared to modern stuff). Because of this and the way that wrought iron was forged and manufactured the wrought iron has a very distinct almost wood grain-esque structure to it, with long threads of iron and then small impurities in between. Google wrought iron grain and you'll get many good pictures showing this.

      I found my own bloom in a nearby lake. I forged it in a campfire to make a small 10 gram piece of wrought iron. I love it!

      @@jhgaming6830 haha that would be sooo much grueling, tedious, grinding (pun intended) work... but I think it would be worth it in the end... I mean just imagine how insane that would look, all setup/lined up in a jaw... maybe make the jaw out of some kind of dark hard wood like mahogany or purple heart from Brazil =)

    That sir is an awesome piece of work. I can only imagine what it would be like to see the fish that is big enough to fit a tooth that large lol. But I think it would awesome to see that fixed into a wooden handle of some sort to look like a primitive man weapon or a spear. Just a little thought

      Well the first knife I uploaded was a kitchen knife made from a piece of shit ikea tableware lol, so wouldn't be that much fun. The first knife I actually FORGED though was the Frontier trade knife. I'll definitely will revisit that blade as I'd like to make and sell some in the future. Thank you!

    Joey Van Der Steeg had some amazing results etching his wrought iron French peen hammer in Hydrochloric Acid (muriatic acid). It revealed all the grain of the wrought irob making it look like fossilized wood. Although the vinegar gave some very decent results.
