Knife making - Forging a Long Yakutian knife

- I'm not as happy as I could be with the hammered in groove on the knife as it could have been wider. I'll probably make another smaller one soon since I do like this style of knife.
Thanks for watching!

You might not be a professional, but, you sir, are an artist.
Thank-you for letting me watch a piece of art being made that I never can own, but greatly appreciate.
Thank you very much for the kind words!

I really enjoy watching the videos you make before bed, I find them very relaxing.
I look from Yakutia, a greeting from the real north 👍🏾👏
Greetings right back!
Man I love that hammered texture that you put into the blade
Thanks mate I appreciate :)
Okay, a foot long Yakut knife is just too cool. I've been looking at a good many videos on making Yakut knives and this is, far and away, the biggest one I've seen. A job well done, sir.👍
glad to see someone make an siberian yakutan knife!
이치고 the Siberian is implied since it is after all Yakutian. And the Yakutia don't live anywhere else other than in Siberia I've never heard of a yakut in Germany or China🤔 but who knows there's Lakota in Germany and Russia
Cool knife. I really like the handle. Nice job. You have really good skillz 👍 😍
Thank you!
about time someone in this world learned how to oil a handle....good job
Love the vids and thanks for your know how and 'teaching' abilities that come with your RUclips videos. Because this week I get a 100lbs anvil and I can forge now thanks to you
Thank you! Best of luck.
@@MakeNCreate thanks

Beautiful blade!!!
Beautiful knife. I love the hammer marks on knife
Thank you. So do I
The wax trick for the handle... love that trick :)
Can you explain the wax handle trick to me?
Is it just a method of lubing the tang so it can be easily removed?
Great looking knife Great job making the handle and blade
Enjoyed your video and gave it a Thumbs Up

I will certainly watch your video when Iam back from my camping trip and have wifi again
Appreciate it
@@MakeNCreate And I appreciate you videos a lot.
I would love to see a video of him using the tools he makes.
At what angle did you sharpen it it looked like it was flat on the stone. Amazing work!!
so good
Bravo...brather..
Great ! Thank you !
Thank you, Mr
Great!!
Чудесный ножик !
Nice 👌
Beautiful work! Is there a purpose to the one sided nature the the blade??? Never seen one like it!!!
Slow to fast effect is cool :)
Yakutanto!)))
You should try making a treadle power hammer, I just finished one for myself and it works great!
I might at one point, Just got myself a spring hammer though.
2:43 I love this
I need this! ;-)
Bro I love your work and videos. Is there anyway that I can purchase one of your work or can I send you a request of making a blade?
You cool master👍👍👍👍
Люблю якутские ножи!
Nice
Hola , me gustaría saber cuál es el mecanismo para abastecer de aire la fragua, gracias
Have you heard of Baotou Steel? Just like hamburgers, the three knives are combined into one. The outside two are soft and the middle one is hard. Then the clay is attached to the knife. The knife has higher strength, better toughness and is not easy to break.
Aka san mai, aka laminated steel. This generally does not actually result in any special properties unless special steels are used (given more modern heat treating methods, anyway), it was just a way to stretch good steel further.
Hey how did you make that forge ? Hell I cannot imagine all you can save in the energy bill
Why did you fit the tang to the handle before epoxying it? And why did you shape it before attaching it to the knife?
Great video like always
No idea why he did this. Never seen anyone else do this. Must be some ancient Yakutian tradition... :/
Kac saatinizi yada gününüzü aldi
I see you too use up that minwax trick. I just put a handle on the sword I've been making all summer. Honestly I'm so happy to have discovered this. Makes fitting the handle perfect 1000 times easier.
As always wonderful video my fellow craftsmen love the way you chose to texture the knife!
Quick question what kind of wood is on the Ends of the handle?
Some type of horn
Indeed. bedding the tang is quite useful.
Great
Really nice. When i saw the thumbnail i really thought it was a blade i made. Ive never had that before. I can always tell my blades from other smiths. Really eerie feeling lol.
Haha, spooked ya! thank you.
Why is it that you make one side a bit hollow? Does it have a specific purpose?
Luar biasa mantap 😍👍
Super nice, can be use for cooking? Or just for show and tell?
i would guess that you could use it for cooking and outdoor things since that's what the siberians needed it for
Zas dobrý video :)
Can you do more clay vid I really enjoy the
what is in the pipe.? water or oil.?
Tasty video
the Yakutian knife is not only a form (shape), it is a one-sided hardening in a carbon donar (coal) from the convex side, which allows the knife to almost self-sharpen, like a beaver’s tooth
Андрей Давыдов how does the self sharpening work, and the hardening is made on one side of the blade? Please explain more, i am curious indeed.
@@stephenpaez9038 the convex side is carbonized, and where there is a flat grinding, it is softer and it grinds during operation, so the knife remains sharp "beaver tooth effect". watch the video by the link, there it is in detail about it, only in Russian, try subtitles
@@stephenpaez9038 the beaver’s tooth is hard on the outside and soft on the inside, therefore the inside is erased and the tooth remains sharp all the time, and yes the beaver’s teeth grow all his life
@@stephenpaez9038 sorry English is not my native language and I do not use it)
Андрей Давыдов Thank you for the explanation. I understand you without a problem. Your message is plenty clear. English is not my main language either Spanish is ;) Grettings from Puerto Rico.
Back to topic. I guess they temper back the hollow part a bit more to get it softer then. I read once that the traditional Yakut knife is not hardened to a particularly high HRC to make it easier to sharpen on the field.
I like the Yakut design as well. I made a shorter stubby one and want try a narrower more ancient style.
What is the weight of your hammer?
Edit... Have you considered make a spring fuller to hammer in the groove?
Can't remember watch the video where I made it, I probably mention it there. I do have a spring fuller but I didn't wanna use it since the ball peen hammer is a bit more common.

Many thanks.
Why stamp the maker mark when you are forging and risk grinding/hammering it out? I find that the best time to stamp it is while heat treating.
Might try and do that. Thank you for the tip. :)
10:47 is this petroleum jelly? How do you get it out of the inside if the handle??? Just pour more epoxy over it???
I love your videos but if you could tell us things like the type of wood you use and what in the world is that black thing, it would be nice.
Other that that the video was awesome, loved it.
buffalo horn and birch wood for the handle. Thank you!
Which steel?
Bang bagai mana cara memembuat krosbo
Nice video! Did you sell your creation or it's just a hobby and you keep'em all ?
Currently not selling but I do plan on doing it in the future.

where did you get that sharpening stone from?
I have the exact same one as that. They sell some similar on Amazon. That particular one is a Japanese sharpening stone if I remember correctly. Hope this helps.
What kind of coal do you use? I recently got into forging and have trouble to get enough heat for the steel to glow orange for longer than 10 seconds.
I use coke.
@@MakeNCreate thank you! I really enjoy your videos and they inspired me to start forging! Keep it up fellow
Make a weapon like they did in the middle ages thats real interesting.
What would be some injuries a blacksmith could get? Not the obvious ones, like burning bodyparts on hot steel, dropping /hitting hammer on body etc?
In history crippeld legs so a good blacksmith would not run off
If the anvil is not at the proper height you can blow out your elbow and hurt your shoulder. The most common injury I’ve noticed is burning when taking hot material out of the forge, make sure you wear a good Kevlar glove on your tong hand and don’t leave it in front of the forge for too long.

Where di you learn to forge and to do this leatherwork?
last couple of years. Watch and learn and trial and error.
No annealing this time?
Do u sell your products?
Making create may I ask you a question what fuel do you use in your Forge is it charcoal or coal
I've been wondering this too
As far as i know its regular coal but in bigger size than regular blacksmithing coal
I think it’s actually coke.
@@muledeerdude it is coal and it burns to coke (you can see it in some other videos when there is a lot of smoke from fresh coal) and since the pieces are so big, the burned coke lasts long
Ivan Kotora I disagree. It’s either a very low quality coal or it’s coke, and it looks more like coke to me. I’ve used both coal and coke quite a bit and I’d bet a fair amount that that is coke. I’ve seen basically all of his videos and I’ve never once seen his forge produce as much smoke as my coal forge. But, neither of us will actually know unless he answers, until then it’s all guessing, educated or not.
