Preamp bypass will work as as Channa mentioned. The LFE signal stays separate. If your Using a REL sub the high level then they get the sub since the signal is from the amp.

I think he meant POWER amp for stereo only listening, so being able to only use that amp for music, vs. the AVR for movies, and yet have the subwoofers connected to BOTH, the stereo amp and the AVR for mixed purpose use. Thus taking full advantage of "better audio" that some 2-channel dedicated amps CAN provide for comparable coin (vs the more... SPL-oriented power channels of AVRs).

I have a Michi P5 (with the velvet sledgehammer S5), the owner manual suggested to use the RCA outs to the sub which I did (I have a 2021 model SVS 2000SB). I get great acoustic results. I have ATC 40 front speakers.

It's a little confusing without knowing more details. Since it's a preamp, it should be just just like any other source (cd player, turntable, etc.) connected to your AVR which should run your sub(s) just like normal.
I use a tube amp for my 2ch music, but all of my sources (cd, turntable, etc) are connected to my Denon 6700h. So I simply use Zone 2 RCA out of my Denon to my tube amp. In between I have a small crossover box (Rolls A-B Box) which separates the low frequencies / sub channel of the Zone 2 stereo RCAs. Then I connect the Zone 2 sub RCA from the Rolls box to my MiniDSP HD input #2 (input 1 is Home Theater...hint, get the cheap MiniDSP remote). You can EQ/calibrate Zone 2 subs with REW and MiniDSP this way. The Rolls box sends 90hz to my tube amp which drives a 2nd pair of "music" speakers (90hz crossover sounded best with my room/setup/speakers). Zone 2 use doesn't need to be in a separate room/outside. There are some settings in the menu to tweak Zone 2 to your liking. Also, you can use the "All Zone Stereo" setting and mute the Main Zone which then allows you to turn off Audyssey or set it to Flat setting (off works best for me for vinyl). I love listening to music via Zone 2 using any inputs/sources and still be able to watch TV on the muted Main Zone (sports, nature shows, closed captioned news, etc.). This saved me money by not buying new/different sources (turntable, cd player, etc.) & interconnect cables. Also, I can still use my Denon HT system for multichannel music content (Auro 3d, Dolby Atmos)...all controlled by the remote including volume for both Zones. "Zone 2" to me means "Setup 2"

I think the MiniDSP Flex would be the perfect solution if its available again. You would need a Subwoofer with two sets of inputs ( for exmaple Balanced from the Minidsp and anbalanced from the AVR) and just switch inputs if you want to switch 2ch and multichannel (same goes for the Poweramp if a seperate one is used, if not I don't know why not just use the AVR in 2 channel mode).

He should add an external crossover like the JL audio CR-1. Put it between amp and preamp for music. Connections can get complicated but my subs work for both two channel music and movies.
Surround processors seem to suck the life right out of two channel. I would love to have a processor that can match the two channel preamp but I have not yet.
