Even though you did this video a year ago, I would like to thank you for making it. I viewed it today because I was having trouble figuring out how to set up my Dennon AVR X4700H with an Emotiva BasX A3. Your instructions were spot on. Excellent!
@@ealanosborne Yes in our world of Home Theaters...if you haven't gotten a noise complaint YOUR SYSTEM DOESNT ROCK !!! What about a video about connecting 2 amps? You got that ?. I've decided to get a A7 to work with my current A5 so I can go 100% pre out mode
I have an x4700h, too. Can you tell a difference in soundstage/Atmos accuracy or is it just louder? I'm considering adding an amp. Then someday I could replace the AVR with a dedicated processor. (7.2.2 setup)
This is a great Video for my needs. I had Marantz sr7015 doing all the work for a 7.2.4 setup. I just got a Emotiva a3 amp to power the LCR of my home theater The Marantz AVR will power the side, back, and top layer speakers. Kef Q900 L&R, Q600c center, Marantz will power the side, back surrounds and the 4 top height speakers. I have used the Spatial Audio Calibration Tool kit to set levels and then the timing for each of the speakers. That has made the most improvement of all.
Excellent video sir. I am so happy I chose a receiver (Denon X3700H) that has pre-outs before I knew I needed them. I watched one movie with the Denon and couldn't believe how hot it was running. I now have an Emotiva BasXA3 for the front and an A7 for everything else. Everything sounds great. Cheers !
Very nice Thinking about this for a long time. Have an x-3600 and thought about an external preamp on the front LCR.. Have a hsu vtf15 sub ... Have you noticed a significant change in Dynamics?
@@jlm8699 Good Morning, I did notice a change in dynamics but don't know if I would say significant. I don't usually go for very high volume either, if that makes a difference.
I have the Denon 3700 with Klipsch speakers 5.2.4. Watched all these videos about amps so got an Emotiva xpa5 for ground and Basx5 for hight and I must say I really haven't noticed much of a difference. Receiver doesn't get as hot, maybe a little more clarity, I don't know. I do understand the Klipsch speakers are very sensitive. It sounds good either way.
If you have some extra $, give the Emotiva HC-1 monoblock a try for the center channel. You'll notice an immediate difference in clarity and separation from the left and right speakers.
@@kixxoff928 If you are using the internal amps inside the Denon, things will tend to heat up quickly. No matter how many external amps you add. If you own the Denon AVR-X6700H or higher model, you can go full preamp mode and shut off all the internal amplification. The Denon will still heat up, just not as much if using the preamp mode. My Denon ran close to +120°F when using all external amps, however, I ordered three cooling fans, 1 for the receiver, 1 for the 4k player and the last for one of the external amps. Just by adding that cooling fan, my Denon went from +120°F average to now 77°F to 80°F on cold temperature days and 80°F to 89°F on the hottest days here in So Cal. You might want to add a cooling fan, I'm using the AC Infinity AIRCOM T10. AC infinity has the different types, some blow the air towards the front like the T10 model, others will blow air to the back, etc. The AC Infinity is able to set the different fan speeds, I usually keep mine around the 2 line mark, it's very quiet.
@@cruzgallegos5071 I own the Denon AVR X6700H. Have the Klipsch 600C, and R-725A fronts, two SVS PB1000 subs, four Monitor Audio Bronze 100's, for surround and rear surround (they are £279 a pair in the UK) I also have 4 JBL Contol 1's, used for Front and rear Heights, (I plan on upgrading these to SVS Prime Elevations when funds become available).. Currently the JBL's are powered by an Emotiva BasX A4, and the Centre and the surrounds by a Emotiva BasX A3. I plan on getting two more BasX A3's and to run the Denon in pre-amp mode, my room size is medium, 12 wide, 8 high, 16 deep. So not after ear shattering levels, just a good clean soundstage.
One thing about the triggers I struggled with at first with my Pioneer 505 hooked up to my Emotiva amp was not knowing I had to enable the trigger for each input on the recivers, like Blu-ray and stream box. I just could not figure out why the amp was not automatically turning on......until I decided to read the manual days later. Maybe you don't have to do that on the Denon, but thought I'd share something I struggled with which was easy to fix.
Oh interesting! Didn’t realize you had to do that with the triggers. As far as I know it’s not an issue with the Denon/Marantz, since I didn’t have to do anything extra 🤷♂️
Great video. I have the Marantz MM7055 on the way to pair with my Marantz SR5015. This video was super helpful for wiring them together. What really helped out was showing the settings inside the receiver that must be done. I hope I get that part right.
@@maximrybchenko6578 I can really tell in my tower speakers while watching movies. There’s definitely more clean bass that come from them. It’s not as much as a sub but definitely more than my receiver pushing them. Also, the center speaker sounds more clear as well. The center speaker is mainly for dialog, so there isn’t much more you can get I’m guessing. I’m still learning settings within my receiver and I haven’t ran the diagnostic yet with the microphone. After I complete the complete setup, I think it will sound better. Also, your receiver isn’t pushed as hard when the speakers power loads are taken off of it and put on the amp.
That's what I'm using (actually SR7011). It looks like two mono block amps. I was going to get a MM7025, but the 7055 was only a few hundred more, and allows for more options, not to mention more power supply overhead for stereo. I've read some negative reviews about these amps. A few said Marantz amps sound distorted. Maybe they got a dud. I'm not sure how valid the reviews are. Mine handles Kef R5, and R2C speakers well. I don't hear the fan, and the noise floor is dead quite.
I really want a basx a3 for my front sound stage.. but I need home theater seating first. Got an 11 channel Klipsch rf7 iii setup with pb16 ultra and JTR cap 4000. My 4 ceilings are Klipsch outdoor speakers mounted to the ceiling. But the cheap 2 channel amp I have for the two rear heights buzz way too much for my liking.
I use a 7 channel McIntosh (200w/channel) to power my 5 bed layer speakers in my living room system. I use two channels to drive each L&R tower for max power. You can do so by using a RCA Y adapter (1 male to 2 male cable), then bi-amp the towers (use 2 channels each). Many people don't know this option exists.
You explained this very well. I'm using an Denon DRA-800H AVR and a Emotiva BasX A2 power amp. Using Preouts on Zone 2 (on AVR no other preouts) into the BasX. One thing I noticed is the sound is flat compared to speakers connected to the AVR (DRA-800H). Is this because the preout cleans up any sound processing that happens within the receiver? If so how can I go about getting that big sound into my power amp? thanks to you or anyone who can help answer my q's.
I believe, since pre-outs are before the amp and perhaps, all the processing, yes the signal will be unchanged from source. One way to find out, connect speakers to your avr, but use pure direct, if the sounds is the same as using pre-outs, then you know the avr is processing the signal.
Just purchased my first external amp (Emotiva XPA-3 Gen 3 from eBay) to go with my Sony STR-DN1080 (which does not include preouts). I purchased 2 Russound ADP-1.2 Speaker-level to Line-level adapters to fix that shortcoming with the intent to power my front soundstage (left, center and right). Since my Sony AVR has a reported 165 watts per channel (2 channels driven) I will use it for my rear surrounds. One cool thing about this Emotiva is that it has expansion slots, so at any point in the future I can add in additional amplification channels if I so desire, perhaps for the rear surrounds if I feel that they're lacking. My system consists of a Sony 85" 4K TV, Polk Reserve series speakers (R700, R400, R200) along with an RSL Speedwoofer 12S. I think this amp will be more than sufficient, my only unknown is whether or not these little Russound adapters will be able to handle the potential power of the Emotiva. We'll see within the next week or so... Great video as always. Never assume that someone knows what you may consider obvious when it comes to audio/home theater....many of us thirst for this type of "basic" tutorial, I assure you of that!
@@ealanosborne I do have a question that, perhaps, many of us new to this hobby wonder. If you're able/willing to respond, that's up to you. All of our A/V devices have settings, all of them, from audio to video. How does one know what's ultimately controlling the sound? It is so frustrating to me when I can change a setting on my AVR, and things sound fine, then I can later change a setting on my Blu-ray while playing an audio CD, and it seems to trump what I had previously set up on my AVR. I mean, what is ultimately controlling what. All of these devices have similar setting and I never know what to do. It's the same with my HDTV......my Blu-ray player has video settings. My AVR has video settings. My HDTV has video settings. What in the hell has the ultimate say in what's being played/displayed? How does on know?
@@utjoseywales Typically I let the TV do any video processing, since it’ll most likely be superior to what your AVR can do. So if there is a “pass through” video option on your AVR, make sure to turn it on, so that the TV processes any video signal. I usually have the AVR process all audio, typically set up by telling your Blu-ray player to output “bitstream” audio (or sometimes just called “auto”). If you tell the Blu-ray player to output Multichannel PCM audio, it will be the processed by the Blu-ray player itself. That and if you choose a “Pure” audio option on your AVR, that’s also telling to the AVR to NOT process any audio, but simply pass the audio through to the speakers. I usually do that when I listen to CDs, so that’s it’s just pure CD quality without any added processing by the AVR. The same applies if you have a turntable connected to your AVR and don’t want your AVR to add any audio processing while listening to vinyl records. 🤷♂️
@@ealanosborne Thank you very much for the reply, it's a great starting point and I appreciate it. My Emotiva amp is to be delivered tomorrow, and once I get everything connected I will apply your advised setting and see how everything behaves. Thank you again, and keep up the great channel.
I have an audio source amp-100vs I think this is a 2 channel amp I don’t think I can put a center channel speaker to it but there is room for more speakers can you help me ?? Also I do have the marantz sr-6014 with pre-outs
Just connected my vintage Marantz to a used Emotiva A 100 I found online. Turned the gain on to full on the amp and will be using the Marantz volume control, I ordered better RCA cables than the cheap ones I installed, bad idea? I see you used decent cables.
Oh yeah, RCA cables nowadays are better shielded, etc. I set up a new subwoofer for my brother-in-law once using his existing RCA cable he’d had for maybe 20 years…no signal. Connected a new SVS RCA cable and it worked just fine. 👍
I have a onkyo tx nr809 I'm having a problem when using an external amp I have the FL and FR hooked up to a crest audio power and I get no sound but if I use the sub out put it works fine
I do apologize Daran, but that AVR is a little older than I’m familiar with when it comes to pre out assignments. I just took a look at the manual online, but couldn’t find what I was looking for. 😬🤷♂️
Thanks for explaining this I’m in the planning stage have so many questions but your vid was a great start thanks 🙏 a lot. Greetings from the Netherlands
I bought a Yamaha many years ago and always wondered how the preamps worked. I now know but it's a htr-5960. I can't change it on a website like you are doing. Any recommendations?
Eh, I would still recommend an external amp if you have nicer speakers, because the AVR still wouldn’t need to do as many tasks simultaneously if an external amp is powering your speakers. Make sense?
Great video. Thank you for posting. I have a dumb question: if the Marantz unit has amplifiers for all speakers, why do you want to add another amplifier?
The internal amps are pretty good. They do a great job powering most consumer grade speakers. But powering speakers with external amps allows the Marantz to process audio much better, since it’s one less thing to worry about. A receiver is good enough for lots of people, but having separate components doing their own specific job is always best. It just costs a lot more. 😄
Hey. Really, cannot decide here.. I have Denon 4700. Speakers are QAcoustics 3000 line. 5.1.4 setup with 3050 fronts, 3090 center and 3010 everywhere else. Denon becomes really hot if I turn up the volume. But I do not turn the volume too high very often... Anyway, there is a nice 2nd hand Emotiva BASX A5175 (yes, the old one) which I could buy. Seller says its in perfect 10/10 condition.. Don't know if I need that amp :( Is the sound really going to impress me or is it just placebo effect and the knowledge that I have an external amp (for the bed layer) that will make me think that there is an improvement...
I think you will notice a difference, since your Q Acoustic speakers can handle up to 4 ohm loads, and the BasX amp in question can output 175 watts per channel into 8 ohms? That’s much more powerful than the replacement A5 amp that Emotiva sells. So your speakers will be able to draw more current from that amp and reproduce some more details in the audio mix that the Denon couldn’t. At least on paper that’s what I think will happen. 😁
@@ealanosborne thanks! BasX 5175 is acquired and is now resting by the Denon (Hooray!). Looking forward to firing that bad boy up (once the cables arrive).
Hello Ealan, very good video for a beginner like me. But I need your advise. I use Marantz sr8012 with Klipsch 7.2.4 set up. Just now I want to boost up my front LR use Parasound 2250. What I do, I simply take off these 2 front LR from AVR and put it to Parasound, connect preout LR to Parasound input and put the trigger on. Then when I want you to do setting in the AVR like you do, I can’t see the preout assigned. Pls advise what is missing? Thanks in advance
Thanks for the great video! Very clear, simple instructions. I'm considering adding a BASX A3 for my L,C,R channels via my Denon X4500H. I use Definitive Technology BP9060 for front and the CS-9060 for center. My question is, should I still set the towers to large and subwoofer ON? Thanks for any info.
Helpful video and great channel. Little confused on the AMP assign using the cinema 50. I have a 7.2.4 configuration. I have a 7 channel amp that I want to use to power the 7 bed layer channels and use the Marantz to power my 4 ceiling atmos. How would you set this up?
Start with 11.1 amp assign mode, Floor should be set to 5CH & SB, and assign the pre out to Front speakers. The remaining ear-level speakers don’t need to be assigned to a specific pre out. Just connect RCA patch cables to pre outs 1-7 (front L/R, Center, Surrounds, Surround Backs) and you should be golden. 🤘
So you can use 5 active speakers as floors and the top 4 channels using passive speakers running off the marantz built in amp is this correct? >5 active using the pre outs / 4 tops using the normal way of doing things. Thanks @@ealanosborne
Very very well explained , love it, I just got my Revel Performa F208 tower speakers and Marantz S 7015. My receiver is powerful enough to power the speaker at 90 db, but I would like to preamp it to an external amplifier , goal is to get the center, sub as well as side speakers and have an ultimate sound system 😀
Hi. I need advice and recommendations. Currently I have a Denon AVC-X3600H connected as a preamplifier to EMOTIVA XPA-11 GEN3. Which processor do you recommend (at a reasonable price) to fully use the potential of the 11-channel power amplifier?
There are 3 preamp processors on the market that are considered "budget:" the Emotiva MC1, Tonewinner AT-300, and IOTA AVX17. Since you have an XPA-11 Gen 3, you might wanna go with the MC1. Only downside is that it only has RCA preouts. The XMC-2 has XLR preouts, if that's your preference, but it's $2,499 as opposed to $1,099 for the MC1.
Oh for sure! I have a video about a friend of mine who set up a 5.1 system like that. It takes more tweaking, since the amps are built into the speakers. But once dialed in, it can sound great! That’s how all the post-production facilities do it. 🤘
So, on speaker wire hookup. Do I need to hook my speaker wire to the new Emotiva BasX A5 or just keep them on my Marantz SR7015? Or does this mean all I need to do is just hook up RCA's from Marantz to Emotiva to get the Emotiva amp to power the speaker wire when the speaker wires are attached to the Marantz?
Once you introduce an external amp, you connect speaker wires from it to your speakers. No need to connect to the Marantz anymore since you don’t want those particular internal amps to power your speakers anymore. Make sense? 😁
@@ealanosborne You rock. Thank you so much! I watched your video earlier since my floor standing speakers have 4 speaker wire hookups and I got lost on hooking them up to my new Emotiva. I guess it’s identical minus the Y-Splitter part for my Klipsch floor standing towers bi-wired.
3:36 the assigning of pre amplifier mode for front channels, is it a new feature for Marantz and denon post 2020 models, or could you do it for pre 2020 models like AvR 6500h?
I don’t think the “assign” part of it is in the X6500H. I think it is with the 2020 and newer models. That being said, I think the X6500H is just “ready” for a signal to output through a pre out if you plug an RCA digital coax cable into it.
Aperion Audio braided RCA cables! I have a link in the description now! :) And yes...they do make a little difference, particularly with dialog clarity and subtle details being just bit more crisp. Cheap Amazon Basics digital coax cables are still good! But more expensive cables have JUST a bit of an edge, if subtle differences matter to you. :)
@@ealanosborne yes I called Crutchfield they said they don't work well with denon but I tried it on my onkyo and my brand new reciever went into amp protection mood then speaker wire check then shut down. After 10 min came back on working fine now but I thought maybe I crossed a wire or something or I got a bad one from Crutchfield so I returned the marantz amp and russound so I was wondering if anyone else had that problem my gut saying in was a defective russound unit. I really want an amp on it running 6ohm speakers and extra power would be nice...
Can I use more than one amp. I want to use external amp for fronts and the heights. Will AVR recognize the height speakers without me being able to do amp assign in system software. Thanks for your help. I do not have preamplifier mode on my AVR. It is older marantz
Sorry, I don’t think it’s possible to do fronts AND heights AND still use some of the internal amps. It’s a software limitation. You can only assign either front OR heights to be used with external amps.
Can you help me out? I’ve got a smart tv that we use for our streaming services but I can’t get sound from my tv to my av receiver. I’m trying to use eARC, I feel that it’s superior to optical, which I could begrudgingly use. As a side note, my blue ray player works perfectly
I guess just make sure the TV audio setting is set to ARC or eARC and the type of audio is either Auto or Bitstream. PCM audio is typically reserved for 2 channel audio when it comes to ARC situations. But it sounds to me like it’s the TV… 🤷♂️
So if I’m using two amps like you did an emotiva Xpa dr3 for the center sound stage and a basx a7 for atmos and in ceiling speakers I set my denon 6700 to pre amplifier and I’ll be set?
I've never used pre-outs before, so pardon my ignorance. I don't see it labelled, but is any White RCA port always for a Left speaker and any Red RCA port always for a Right speaker?
Hmmm…just taking a look at the manual, it doesn’t seem to have a specific “preamp” mode like the newest model (SR6015), but since it has a full set of pre outs, and can process up to 11 channels total, I can only imagine you can still power all channels externally. Otherwise, there would be no point to having 11 total pre outs. 🤷♂️
Receivers are great all-in-one components - it’s a video processor/switching device, and audio processor, and powers your speakers as well, with its internal amps. Great for entry level systems and speakers that don’t require lots of power. But once you begin to upgrade your speakers - needing more power to really bring out the true nature of your speakers’ capabilities - you’ll need external amps to power them. A receiver typically powers up to 50 watts, maybe up to 75 watts per channel when ALL channels are outputting audio simultaneously. When you see the power rating online, it’s almost always “2 channels driven,” not “all channels driven,” unfortunately. In my dedicated home theater space, all my speakers can handle a lot of power, so they’re all powered with external amps, allowing for the receiver to only worry about video and audio processing - not powering - which in turn makes the receiver perform better. It’s always best to have separate components doing their own separate duties, but systems like that obviously cost a LOT more, so a receiver is a great compromise for those starting their home theater journeys. 😀🎉
Ealan, this is an excellent video and a great tutorial. I have just bought Denon X3700H, and I want to use it for the Atmos 7.2.4 setup. How can I add two additional channels by using an integrated stereo amplifier ( i.e. Aiwa AMU-120BT or similar) or my current 7.1 AVR Yamaha RX-V671?
If you mean using the same corresponding speaker terminal (Left Front pre out AND Left Front speaker terminal), no, sorry. Once you use a pre out, that’s it.
So i have the x4700H and right now i have the 7000x outlaw and i do have an older receiver. Would it be better to run all 11 speakers using the 7000x and the old receiver or use the 4 height channel from the x4700H?
Any AVR (with a full set of pre outs) will benefit from using it solely as a preamp and powering all your speakers externally. So I’d try and use the 7000x and older receiver to power everything. 🤘😁
Next year I’m getting the outlaw 5000 but for now I just want to have the best clarity for what I have either using the x4700h in all pre mode or not. Just trying to get answer because it’s a challenge for me to get to everything and test
Hi there! Question pls🙏🏼 can i use marantz sr7015 av reciever with marantz pm 6007 amplifier? Will it boost the sound if used on my speakers as (2way) for audio listening? Thanks!
I guess it would depend on your sonic preferences. Since they’re both Marantz, and the PM6007 only outputs 45 watts per channel, I don’t think it would make a huge difference, but I could be wrong. 🤷♂️
Hi mate, just picked up the 7015 and couldn’t figure out how to set the pre outs to the fronts. After carefully viewing I set the avr to 11.1 and cancelled the rear height to make it happen for my 9.1. Do I need to recalibrate cause I checked the speaker levels with spl meter and adjusted all to 75db
Looking at adding a 3 or 5 channel external amp to a SR7015. In your video you said that the speaker pre-outs are ready to go, waiting for a signal. Question: If I am on the 11.1 assign mode, would the AVR still amplify the atmos speakers if the LCR+Surr are connected to an external amplifier? I.e., 5.0 is externally amplified, atmos is internally amplified. TIA, great stuff on the video!
Question: I have an rz50 and am using a very old but capable Yamaha receiver to amp my 2 rear channels. I had to connect to a CD input on the Yamaha. I find the volume really low and so I have to push the amp to 20/100 (lower is louder) which causes hissing from the speakers. I set the onkyo to +10 on those 2 speakers. When using the Yamaha stand-alone it has very decent power output. Any idea why I have to push the Yamaha so hard with my setup …causing white noise/hissing. ???
They are! They may not make much of a discernible difference sonically, but it’s more about the sturdier build quality and higher end materials used internally than your average RCA cable that make them last longer. That and the Aperion cable ends twist to lock, which is pretty cool. 😎
Ealan, can you do a more in depth video on the bass management aspects of Denon/Marantz receivers. When setting the fronts to large, the crossover does seem to matter if you select lfe+main for bass. It's a bit wonky they way they implemented it. What are your suggested crossover frequencies? 80 for front and 120 for sub?
only the front left/right or rear heights can be assigned to an external amp when using only one amp. It’s a software limitation. If you really want to power your center channel, I’d suggest getting an Emotiva BasX A3 amp to power your front left/center/right. 🤷♂️
Just to add on, but when I play the receiver, I can hear sound from those LR.. just confused why no pre out shown and whether it’s already on or? Thanks for advise
If I’m interpreting the manual correctly, it’s just the SR8015 that you would need to “assign” your Front L/R to use the pre out. The SR8012 pre outs are just “ready,” so no need. So that’s good that you can hear audio! That means the steps you took are correct. 👍
It’s a 7015, actually. I WISH I had the 8015 so I could test out a 13.1 Auro 3D setup. 😄 The 7015 is cool, though. Sometimes I have intermittent video switching weirdness, but other than that, pretty solid!
I found the Pyle PT8000CH 8ch amp, the specs are off the charts, has anyone heard of or have this amp that could have share a brief review...it would be truly appreciated.
Hello! I’m hoping you can assist with configuring my audio setup. I have a Dynasty ProAudio WSA-5RP wireless surround sound kit, a Denon AVR-X6700H, and an Emotiva XPA-11. Could you guide me on how to connect the Dynasty ProAudio WSA-5RP wireless surround sound kit to the Emotiva XPA-11?
Hi! Honestly, if you're really wanting to use the Dynasty kit with your surrounds, I would bypass the XPA-11 all together since that would be drastically reducing the output of the XPA-11. The Dynasty amps only output 50 watts per channel into a 4 ohm load. That's not a lot of power. Whereas the XPA-11 can output hundreds of watts per channel. Whichever speakers you want to have lots of power going to them, I would connect them to the XPA-11. But if you really want to avoid long speaker wire runs to your surrounds, I would just go from the surround pre outs of your X6700H and connect them directly to the Dynasty kit. But if it was me, I would connect all speakers to the XPA-11 and find creative ways to hide long speaker wire runs.
I have the Denon X4500H powering Left,Center,Right fronts,Left and Right surround and left, right back surround and 2 front height speakers. I just picked up the Outlaw 5000X 5-channel amp and would like to use that to power my L,C,R fronts and Left and Right surrounds, then have the Denon power the 2 front heights and left and right back surrounds. Would this be the proper way to use the Outlaw 5-channel amp? And also if you could tell me what settings in my Denon as far as amp assign would be the best? Sorry for all the questions, love your channel! Subcribed.
That's definitely a great way to use your 5000x amp within the system. Amp Assign: 11.1 Floor: 5Ch & SB Height: 4 speakers (I know it's weird, but trust me) PRE: Front Then go back into Speaker Config page, make sure all your speakers are accounted for, but be sure to have the rear heights set to "none," since you only have 2 heights, and need to essentially "trick" the AVR into powering those 5 speakers with the 5000x amp.
Sure. Most AVRs have EQ controls to varying degrees, depending on the brand. I currently have an IOTA AVX17 which has a pretty impressive and robust parametric EQ that I can tailor the sound to my liking. Onkyo, for example, has a decent graphic EQ, which isn’t quite as robust, but still gets the job done with fixed frequencies. And Sony for some reason decided to only be able to adjust its treble and bass up or down, which is the bare minimum when it comes to EQ adjustments.
I currently have a 7.2 channel receiver and I need help to understand why I need to purchase an external amp for $300-$400 (or more) to add channels which could take me to 5.1.4 from 5.1.2, or to take the strain off my main receiver. Why can't I just purchase a 9 channel receiver with that extra $300-$400.
Receivers are good all-in-one units that can make any home theater sound great without spending loads of cash. But with audio components in general, it's always been better to have separate components, because they do their job much better on their own. Like back in the 90's, I had an AIWA all-in-one audio system - 3-disc CD changer, dual cassette deck, aux in, and radio. But it would've sounded better and lasted much longer if I had all those components as separate units - preamp, amp, CD player, tape deck, radio - but as a punk teenager with no money, there's no way my parents would've spent that kind of money on separate components. So the AIWA system was a good compromise. Getting a 9 channel receiver would still put you back in the AVR situation, with a component that has so many different tasks to perform simultaneously. Which 7 channel AVR do you currently have? I'm going to guess it might not even support the use of an external amp...
@@ealanosborne Thanks for your reply, and I see your point of taking some of the work off or the receiver. I currently have the Onyko TX-NR696 as an Amazon renewed ($400) I can return it and get a credit, and get $600 out of the piggy bank. I looked on the back of my receiver and the only pre outs I have are for the subs. So I guess my first step is to get a 7 channel receiver with pre outs, (suggestions are welcome)
@@michaeltobler649 You'll have to look at older models if you want 7 channel AVRs with a full set of preouts. Once Atmos came on the scene, pre outs were only on 9 channel AVRs and higher. But Marantz has brought them back with their new Cinema 60 and 70s models. But they're not cheap. 😬
@@michaeltobler649 Yeah, that's a good one! It's the predecessor to the RZ50, so it's not HDMI 2.1 or 8K compatible, but most don't need that anytime soon. 👍
Hello Ealan … I’m your big fan on RUclips, I have a question for about RCA cable you are using on the video. I would like to know what’s kind the cable you are using for connect from receiver to amplifier. On the video you are using single cable to connect left and right channel just connect single cable . I’m new and don’t have much knowledge about home theater system I need help. I just used standard rca cable red and black color to connect for left and right channel from receiver to amplifier red for right speaker and black for left speaker. So, I’m not sure I connected like this correct or not please help me and can you let me know what kind the correct cable I need to use for it and where I can buy it . I hope you answer for me soon. Thank You very much.
The cables that I used in this video are Aperion Audio RCA patch cables (affiliate link below). They are much better than your standard red and white stereo analog RCA cables because they are better shielded and higher quality for home theater purposes. Red and white stereo RCA cables still work, but there's a chance they might introduce noise or a hum into the signal. But if the Aperion Audio cables are too expensive, just search for "digital coax" cables, which are basically the same, but less expensive. www.aperionaudio.com/products/aperion-audio-rca-audio-stereo-subwoofer-cable-mono-single?ref=xgnDvScPYS9H3
The only speakers that support external amplification are the front left and right speakers, mainly to improve music playback (in case you weren’t already aware). But any integrated amp would do well, or even a 2-channel home theater amp, like Emotiva BasX amps.
What about using my old 7.1 receiver as an amp if I bought a new processor along with a 7 ch amp to power my base layer? I could use the multichannel inputs of the receiver to power 4 or 6 atmos ceiling speakers
Yes! As long as it has that 7.1 multichannel input section, then yes, you should be able to use it as an amp. Many AVRs don’t have that section on the back, so if you know it’s there, it should work! 🤘
I don’t understand why you set the system to 11.1 if you’re running 9 speakers. 3 of which are powered externally but only L/R are selected as pre out? Why not select 5.1.4 or 7.2 and pre outs LCR?
Would it make sense to buy an 11-channel Power Amplifier (200 watts x3, 100x8) and use it with an 11-channel Receiver ( Marantz Cinema 40)? I like having one chassis for a power amp. But instead, should I go with maybe a 7-channel amp (200 watts x7) for the base layer and use the receiver just to power the 4-height channels? What would make more sense or be better? Been looking at monoliths for Power Amps.
Eh, it just depends on how big your front soundstage is. If you have an LCR that can handle lots of watts, and smaller surround/height speakers, going with a single chassis might be advantageous. If you have equally power hungry LCR and surrounds speakers, getting a 7-channel amp might be the way to go. But overall, it’s always best to power all your speakers externally, if possible. Lots of people get a 3-channel amp to power their LCR first, then get more amps later, just to split the cost up over time. 🤘
@@ealanosborne SVS Prime Pinnacle Towers, Ultra Center Channel, and then just either Prime Bookshelf or Prime Elevation for the surround base layer. Then Prime Elevation for the height channels.
What’s up man. Love the channel, I’ve learned so much from ya. I had a question about what is more ideal for a 7.2.6 setup when it comes to the pre amps. Am I better off getting one 7 channel pre amp and doing all my bed layer speakers and a second 6 channel pre amp for my atmos speakers? Or should I get a 13 channel amp and run them all there? I think I learned that the more channels, the less power per channel? Just want to make sure what’s exactly ideal. If it is less power per channel, the more channels you have.. would that mean ideally a 3 channel amp (for LCR), a 4 channel amp (surrounds) and a 6 channel amp (for atmos, as they don’t need as much juice) would be the ultimate setup? Tryna figure out how to get the best bang out of my setup. I plan on running Kef in walls, with kef heights, and two kef subs on a Sony str az7000es receiver Thanks for all your help.
Yeah, I guess it depends on your LCR. If you have 3 monster KEF speakers for your LCR that can handle a lot of wattage, and 4 surrounds that aren’t as beefy, I’d maybe go with the 3 + 4 + 6 combo you mentioned. But if you have 7 ear level speakers that are relatively similar in size, go for the 7 + 6 amp combo. I maybe wouldn’t go for a 13 channel amp, since they’re usually really expensive for size and convenience’s sake. The upside of splitting the power duties between 2 or more external amps is that it’s more easily replaceable if one decides to fail. That and I love my 7 + 6 combo because I can easily turn off the ear-level amp and run only heights if I want to test out what’s actually coming out of the heights. 😄🙌
@@ealanosborneSounds like a plan! Thanks so much for the clear answer. My LCR's will be the kef R Series in walls which do push a bit more power than my surrounds which I decided to go with the Q series in walls from Kef. Thanks again for the clarity my dude!
Are we using the power of both amps? You know? Seems like you would wanna add an amp to add power to existing receiver NOT canceling out the receivers amp but adding external amp for added power????
No, not really. Most consumer grade speakers don’t need THAT much power. But by essentially turning off the internal amps, it allows the AVR to process audio even better because doing it all - HDMI switching, audio processing, video processing, amplifying speakers - really bogs down it capabilities having to perform all those tasks simultaneously. But an AVR performs much better if it no longer has to worry about amplifying audio signals. 👍
@@ealanosborne My thinking 🤔 was you could combine the 2 units power. I was about to pick up 2 125 watt Marantz mono blocks and I wanted to hook them to L and R fronts in addition to my Yamaha putting out 125 watts also. Combination of 250 watts @ 8ohms. So that's not possible?
wil it use the sound of the preamp? i bought a onkyo reciever the sound for music is bad but surround is cool i only want to preamp to feed the front speakers . I have a great yamaha aventage3040 but i cant see where i put the preamp outs from the onkyo and do i and up with dubble proccesing?
@@voederbietels Cool. You should be able to use the Aventage 3040 since it has the 7.1 analog input section. And as long as you select "pure" or "direct" music mode on the RZ70, it shouldn't add any additional processing to the signal. 👍
I just don't get the volume control. Does the trigger control just turn on/off the external amp(s)? How do the volume controls match on separate components? When you calibrate do you turn volume control on both amps half way? Quarter way? I plan on getting a processor and THREE amps. If anyone can answer, would appreciate.
It’s just how the software works. The only “assignable” pre outs that you need to worry about are either the Front L/R or Rear Heights. Otherwise, all the other pre outs are ready to accept an RCA cable to then be connected to an external amp, if necessary. 👍

Hell yeah, Spatial Audio Calibration Toolkit! 🎉
Cheers !
I've got the X3700 as well. But a Rotel running the front LCR. Are you suggesting it sounds better with the other 7 channels externally amped as well?
Wondering, how hot Denon would run if you only powered bed layer speakers, and keep atmos powered by Denon?

If you have some extra $, give the Emotiva HC-1 monoblock a try for the center channel. You'll notice an immediate difference in clarity and separation
from the left and right speakers.
I'm considering to add 5ch amp for the bed layer and keep atmos on Denon. Did you try such setup? Would Denon still be running hot?
@@kixxoff928
If you are using the internal amps inside the Denon, things will tend to heat up quickly. No matter how many external amps you add.
If you own the Denon AVR-X6700H or higher model, you can go full preamp mode and shut off all the internal amplification.
The Denon will still heat up, just not as much if using the preamp mode. My Denon ran close to +120°F when using all external amps,
however, I ordered three cooling fans, 1 for the receiver, 1 for the 4k player and the last for one of the external amps. Just by adding
that cooling fan, my Denon went from +120°F average to now 77°F to 80°F on cold temperature days and 80°F to 89°F on the hottest
days here in So Cal. You might want to add a cooling fan, I'm using the AC Infinity AIRCOM T10. AC infinity has the different types, some blow the air
towards the front like the T10 model, others will blow air to the back, etc. The AC Infinity is able to set the different fan speeds, I usually keep mine around
the 2 line mark, it's very quiet.

Elan, would love to see you do a video about connecting an external amp like the Tonewinner AD-5100PA to the new Pioneer LX505 for front stage LCR

I bought a Yamaha many years ago and always wondered how the preamps worked. I now know but it's a htr-5960. I can't change it on a website like you are doing. Any recommendations?
If your AV receiver has higher wattage each channel, would it be make sense to keep in your original AV receiver out than using pre amp?
Eh, I would still recommend an external amp if you have nicer speakers, because the AVR still wouldn’t need to do as many tasks simultaneously if an external amp is powering your speakers. Make sense?
do you have videos showing the xlr connections? plus subwoofers?

I wonder that if I can connect an active speaker which seems to compose built-in amp to the preouts straight without external amp?
Is it possible to configure it to send the LCR & Surround Backs to the amp, and let the avr power the side Surrounds and 4 Atmos speakers?
Yes, definitely. It’s only the front L/R or Rear Heights that have to be assigned. Everything else can be powered externally no problem.
What are those connections cables you are using in the demo and do the cables actually matter
Can I connect an amp to the onkyo TX 6100 using the russound some people saying it causes an error mode saying check amp and speaker wires.
No. The 6100 has only Zone 2 pre outs for a stereo setup in another room. There’s no way to utilize an external amp in the main surround sound zone.
@@ealanosborne yes but what about the "russound" preout connection from Crutchfield for $39 were you can turn any reciever into a preout reciever...

@@ealanosborne Thank you. Much appreciated
So what happens to that last surround back channel. Or you just hook the speaker up too the Marantz. if it 11 speakers in all
I've never used pre-outs before, so pardon my ignorance. I don't see it labelled, but is any White RCA port always for a Left speaker and any Red RCA port always for a Right speaker?
Typically yes, that’s how they’re colored
I have a Marantz 6011 and looking to add power amp for all the 9 channels but I don't see preamplifier option in amp assign in Marantz 6011
Thanks Ealan, I will try and keep u posted.
Can you please recommend some good RCA cables? Just got a morantz m7055 to pair with my x3700. Running all Klipsch setup 7.2.4
Thankx
Yeah! The first item in the description are braided RCA patch cables from Aperion Audio. They’re excellent! 🤘
I’m new to this. Why did you connect an external amp to a receiver? The receiver has its own amp, right? Please advise! Thank you much!
So what are all the extras inputs on my 2 channel amp ??
A/B speaker selector, to audition two sets of speakers. But again, the internal components limit it to power A or B, but not both at the same time.
After using the pre-outs can I still use the open connection on the bottom of the receiver for more speakers...
If you mean using the same corresponding speaker terminal (Left Front pre out AND Left Front speaker terminal), no, sorry. Once you use a pre out, that’s it.
@ealanosborne OK, Thank you...
Another great video as usual, thank you.
Thanks!
Does dirac/audyssey still work when using preouts?
Yes. External amps are strictly powering the speakers, but the audio processing is still happening in the receiver. 👍
Yes! You are correct. Since you can assign the Front L/R to say “PRE” (for pre-out), you can have the SR7015 internal amps power your heights. 🤘
Are those Asperion rca cables? Was thinking about trying some of those. Never sure if cables make any discernible difference
I’ll put that on the list! 👍
Happy to have a chat with you and discuss it as well. I'll share my findings with rew and audyssey mult eqx

No I’m using it to power the fronts can I use it for more like a center channel ??
only the front left/right or rear heights can be assigned to an external amp when using only one amp. It’s a software limitation. If you really want to power your center channel, I’d suggest getting an Emotiva BasX A3 amp to power your front left/center/right. 🤷♂️
Hello I have problem to select Preout mode Settings on my denon 3700h using 5.1.2 configuration? that option is only for 11 channels???
Just to add on, but when I play the receiver, I can hear sound from those LR.. just confused why no pre out shown and whether it’s already on or? Thanks for advise
If I’m interpreting the manual correctly, it’s just the SR8015 that you would need to “assign” your Front L/R to use the pre out. The SR8012 pre outs are just “ready,” so no need. So that’s good that you can hear audio! That means the steps you took are correct. 👍
@@ealanosborne so why there are pre out jacks in the 8012 ya? isn't it for external amplification?

Can you still re-assign channels when you put a denon av into pre-amplifier mode.

Wow the 8015. How do you like it so far?
It’s a 7015, actually. I WISH I had the 8015 so I could test out a 13.1 Auro 3D setup. 😄 The 7015 is cool, though. Sometimes I have intermittent video switching weirdness, but other than that, pretty solid!

I have an Onkyo TX-RZ50 and want to run a 7.2.4 system. What is the best bang for my buck I can get on an external amp to make this happen?
Emotiva all the way. Their BasX line of amps are the best value you can get. 🤘
Thanks for the prompt response 😊
Amp Assign: 11.1
Floor: 5Ch & SB
Height: 4 speakers (I know it's weird, but trust me)
PRE: Front
Then go back into Speaker Config page, make sure all your speakers are accounted for, but be sure to have the rear heights set to "none," since you only have 2 heights, and need to essentially "trick" the AVR into powering those 5 speakers with the 5000x amp.
What male to male rca cables were you using in this video!?
Aperion Audio braided RCA cables. Link is in the description of the video! 🎉🙌
I have a 11.2 Onkyo and would like to add amps to it which apps would you suggest
Emotiva BasX amps are very budget friendly. Beyond that, Starke Sound Fiera4 and Fiera8 are fantastic as well.
can you use tone controls on your reciever using the outlaw amp?
What do you think about the Onkyo TX-RZ840 (2019 model)

Thanks a lot Ealan.. I appreciate about this answer.
what external amplifier will fit to my yamaha vx6a reciver
What about the speakers, you don’t need to connect them?
That should be a given 🔊
Thank you
Which of the two components?
I don’t understand why you set the system to 11.1 if you’re running 9 speakers. 3 of which are powered externally but only L/R are selected as pre out? Why not select 5.1.4 or 7.2 and pre outs LCR?
Nicely explained 😊
Thank you! 🙂

I plan on running Kef in walls, with kef heights, and two kef subs on a Sony str az7000es receiver
Thanks for all your help.

I was about to pick up 2 125 watt Marantz mono blocks and I wanted to hook them to L and R fronts in addition to my Yamaha putting out 125 watts also.
Combination of 250 watts @ 8ohms.

Why is center channel is not showing PRE ?
It’s just how the software works. The only “assignable” pre outs that you need to worry about are either the Front L/R or Rear Heights. Otherwise, all the other pre outs are ready to accept an RCA cable to then be connected to an external amp, if necessary. 👍
