VERY nice and useful video. Other youtubers somehow are not that detailed in clarifying the physical connections, and, most importantly - AVR amp assigns.
I am running Auto 3D setup without VOG channel (5.1.4). I prefer Auro over Atmos. For all movies I always use Auro.

I’ve been into home theater since the &0’s and have upgraded accordingly as the formats have developed. I’ve never been blown away by Atmos, apart from a few very well done mixes. I believe the Auro speaker layout to be superior to Dolby’s and more compatible with the way humans actually hear. There’s a ton of poor Atmos mixes, and they can be greatly enhanced using Auro’s speaker layout and it’s upmixer. Everyone must make their own decision of course, but for me, this provides the greatest surround experience currently available.

I agree 100% with you, I was into multi-channel sound in the 70’s with my quadraphonic receiver and Auro 3D is on another level (pardon the pun). Atmos has some benefits with moving some sounds around, but Auro 3D is an environment. Watching a baseball game is exciting to me now, movies and music have a more flavor from what they were before. Atmos only works with their encoded movies, Auro 3D works with everything. I predict, Auro 3D will one day have objects added and that will be another leg up for Home Theater.
I just checked and my Denon 4500 has Top Surround! Thank you! All this time I thought I needed 13.1 pre amp!

At 3:21 min -Layout Front Height Surround Height there is only 5.1.2 with Dolby Atmos possible.Switch to rear Heights to get full Dolby Atmos support with 4Heights on all 3D Soundformats.
My avr let's me pre amp the same as you showed or fronts or back heights, the first 4 speakers connection or the last 4,or all
Can you put two speakers on one channel and place them in the middle of the TV screen and the other on the opposite side for VOG. I can't put VOG on the ceiling.

Marantz cinema 50 has 4 sub outs I am running 2 subs but with the extra 2 outs can i use one of the remaining for the God channel along with an amp ?
Also, is the god channel directly above the main seating or centered between the other 4 ceiling speakers?
The new Cinema 50 allocates the Voice of God differently than their past AVRs. So you no longer have to use a subwoofer output to power it. Just search “Cinema 50 Amp Assign” and you’ll see the updated way to pull off Auro 3D setups. And you want to put the voice of god right above your listening position. 👍

Ealan Osborne why wouldn't you use the 3 channel amp for the most important channels L,R, and C? Can you configure the receiver to use the preamp for those 3 channels?
Not for an Auro 3D specific configuration, no, unless you had ALL your speakers being powered externally. At least that's the limitation with this generation of Denon or Marantz AVRs (2020 models) since you have to use one of the subwoofer preouts to power the voice of god channel. The new series (x3800h, Cinema 50, etc) route the voice of god differently, so I believe you could use a 3-channel amp to power your LCR and use one of the internal amps to power the voice of god channel.
With a larger room, how would you setup say 4 voice of god speakers? Looking at setting up 13.2 auro 3d and atmos 9.2.4 setup? From what I've been learning seems auro 3d has the better up mixing or at least more coming out of those height speakers. Also looking at the Acram receivers like the AVR20 with external amp.
A larger room meaning multiple rows of seats? Because then I'd maybe have a voice of god for each row. It kind of defeats the purpose if you have a bunch of VOG's in/on your ceiling. 🤷♂
@@ealanosborne yes 2-3 rows about 26' x 14' for the size room. That makes sense one speaker per row for VOG

Great video as always , I have the denon X4400H built in Auro 3D , the only downside for me this format don't use the surround back channels and for me some important effects pass over this channels , I just found that DTS Neural : X do a pretty good job using all the channel on my configuration including the surround back channel . I still need to figurate out how to install a VOG channel in my ceiling because is very complicate the way my ceiling is built

@@paulk9534Yeah, since it's coming out of one of the sub pre outs, it'll need to be powered by an external amp. And yes, as far as I know, the signal sent to the VOG in an Auro 3D setup should contain full bandwidth audio, so it'll just depend on your VOG speaker's frequency response how deep the low frequencies will get.
I have the Marantz 7015 as well. I’m utilizing all my base channels with the Emotiva XPA 7, but need to use the Marantz receiver just for my two front heights. Can’t seem to configure the Marantz to pre-amp the base while using only the receiver for the front heights until I can get another amplifier. Any suggestions?
Amp assign with 11.1, set Floor to 5CH + SB, height to 2Ch (front or top, whichever you have) and pre out set to FRONT. All 7 bed layer channels will be ready for external amplification that way. Then you can use internal amps for your heights. Make sense? 😃

I just purchased a Denon X3800H AVR to try out the Auro 3D and I was looking under the sound/parameters options and I do not have the auro-matic options to adjust the levels or strength. Is this only available for there upper tier AVRs? The X3800H has Auro 3D but no way to tweak it.

@ealanosborne I found the problem you have to have Auro 3D enabled in order to see the auro-matic 3D preset and strength options under the surround parameter options. THANKS 😊

Hey Ealan, about the Presets, on this AVR , say I setup a 7.1 bedlayer, and 4 heights, front and side surrounds. Could preset one be set to Auro 9.1 and Preset two be set to 7.1.2?

What I'm planning on doing is try to rig up some height brackets to move speakers into different locations based on layout. It's in progress.
When you use side surround speaker setup you get no sound when you use Atmos. In order to switch back and forth between Atmos and Auro set receiver to front height and rear height. Surround height has no sound coming out when set on Atmos even though it says Atmos DTS and Auro.
Set receiver to front height and rear height speakers then you can get Auro 3D and Atmos sound by pushing the movie button on the remote to toggle back and forth. Try it out! P.S. make sure your height speakers are around 30 degrees to the front and back of you Dolby also uses these settings now.

Good sir, I have a crazy question about a possible substitute for your voice of God 1 speaker in the 10.1 setup. I have the same AVR and have all Klipsch reference speakers. I am currently running a 5.2.4 setup with front heights, surround heights and rear surrounds. I am not using the integrated Dolby atmos speakers in my RP26FA towers. Could I use my 2 channel amp and power those atmos speakers which bounce off the ceiling and down on my head for the voice of God channel? Is that a crazy thought or what?
When it comes to configurations, there’s no wrong answer if it sounds good to you! 🤘 Since VOG is only one channel, though, you’d have to get an RCA splitter to connect both of your upward firing speaker to a 2-channel ext amp. But I’d say go for it! There’s so much room for science and experimentation within home theater, my friend. 😁🎉
Cool video, but Auro 3D is basically non-existent here in the US. Really seems we’re lucky enough that when older movies are upgraded from blu-ray to 4K that we even get them upgraded up to Dolby Atmos or DTS-X as they sadly remain in their DTS-HD audio format (Predator, Terminator 2, upcoming Poltergeist, etc…) Realizing this, I opted to go with a 9.3.4 setup having two front high/wides with two larger subwoofers on each side of the front stage and a third smaller subwoofer placed at rear near the middle. During full use, with everything full blast, will all 3 subwoofers run. Then after hours on a late night movie, I’ll only use the little subwoofer in the back. Now determining if Dolby Atmos is better than DTS-X, or vice versa, is the lingering question I have. Would that make a great video if you haven’t already addressed this yet? Atmos vs X ?

Unfortunately you can't with the 3700. It's not Auro 3D ready, so there is no update to add it later. But the new x3800h that will be coming out next year will support Auro 3D.
Ok but it doesn’t make much sense this Auro 3d I don’t see movies so I don’t mind changing the amplifier in case in many years some other more beautiful coding comes out to be worth it already having L atmos! ??
i have a 7,2,4 setup and I was wondering if i can put my front left front right and center channel into pre amp mode since i have a emotiva xpa3 gen 3 powering the front 3. It only shows in the amp assignment that i can put in the 7,2,4 setup but no pre amp for the front stage
Yeah, there’s no specific assignment for the LCR to be powered externally. Just choose 11.1 Amp Assign, Floor to 5CH + SB, then for the pre outs, select Front (then the word PRE will appear on each front speaker, and the center channel pre out will just be automatically ready for external amplification - no need to assign the center). Make sense? 😃

Hey Elan, you are a good RUclipsr, you explain everything slowly and good! I have a question, what about the layouts when using 5 ceiling speakers? Can i set on a Denon X4700H to have two top middle channels plus the voice of god and two front heights or i need to have the exact layout like in this video(front height and rear plus VOG ) ?
Yes, it needs to be like this, where the height channels are labeled as "front height and rear height" instead of top height. "Top" in Denon's software automatically assumes it's an in-ceiling speaker, as opposed to a speaker that's been mounted. But that's just labeling.
You could technically have speakers that are roughly placed where "top middle" speakers would be, and then in the software still label them as "rear height," just so Auro 3D can be recognized by the software. It's just a matter of minor details that you can slightly alter to your liking. Make sense? :)

@@AexoeroV No, it looks like the assign mode is set to 13.1, so that immediately tells me that photo is most likely from an x6700h which can process a total of 13 channels. The x4700h can only process a total of 11 channels.
@@ealanosborne no, the image it's from a pre/pro 8805 from Marantz, i have found a video about the Denon X6700H with the layouts and it doesn't seem to have this configuration either. I initially thought that if the X4700H can do 11 channels i could set up something like 5.1.5 for Atmos/DTS X/Auro 3D like i mentioned, two top middle channels, the voice of god and two front heights.
@@AexoeroV Oh okay, yeah the 8805 can do that as well. And yes, a 5.1.5 in the X4700h is technically a 10.1 Auro 3D setup. That’s just how Auro labels its configurations.
Why can’t you use more pre outs if they are Available? If you gain a subwoofer two pre out for top surround. Why can’t you keep the back surrounds?
Just depends on the limitations of the software and processing of your receiver. I WISH every pre out could be assigned to whatever you wanted, but that’s usually limited to the real expensive preamps. Go figure.
So I have the denon 4700, after hooking up 7.2.4 all on pre amp mode and subs daisy chained or y spitter, the subwoofer 2 pre out is available and it wont work due to the software? Looks like it can easily be fixed through a firmware.
So Auro3D uses VOG and what if we choose instead top middle(two speakers-like left and right top middle)? Auro 3D still gone use them or it would be only used by atmos?
Well, top middle would imply 6 height speakers, correct? If that's the case, only the newest Denon and Marantz models (X3800H, X4800H, Cinema 50, etc) support 6 height speakers, and I do believe Auro 3D would still be supported with 2 Top Middle speakers. But I could be mistaken...

Hi Ealan, great information, I am a former Atmos listener, I read something about Auro 3D back in 2016 on a site somewhere. I was very intrigued and I took a chance and changed my speaker configuration, bought the $200 upgrade for my Marantz SR7009 thinking if it was not what they said I would just roll up my sleeves and go back to the Atmos setup. Here it is in 2023 and I still have Auro 3D and loving it! I found that Atmos can only work with Atmos encoded material, while Auro 3D plays everything in immersive sound, even my Atmos encoded discs sound great. I like that `it puts you in the middle of the action. I have a question for you about your setup pertaining to your height speaker downward angles. Did you find an optimal angle for your setup? I am preparing to order some Klipsch Bookshelf speakers for my heights and did you find it better to have your heights pointing directly down into the listening area or pointing down slightly above your head? I presently have a 14x16 room, I modified my inwall speakers to accommodate the front height at 7 degrees and the back surround heights at 20 degrees down. It sounds great like this, but I am thinking of going directly into the listing area with my new speakers. What do you think about that?
So ive just bought twister auro 3d blu ray , denon 6700h.
5.2.4 , avr says auro supported , but i only get the dts 5.1.
Is this because i have no vog speaker?

I believe the X6700H is a bit finicky when it comes to an Auro 3D supported layout. Double check your amp assign section in the setup menu to make sure your height speakers are assigned as “front height left/right (FHL/FHR),” and “surround height left/right (SHL/SHR).” If you have heights assigned as “Top height left/right,” technically the AVR won’t recognize it as Auro supported. Strange, I know.
In the link below, scroll down to the section labeled “Example connection for the Auro 3D 9.1 channel system” and you’ll see what I mean. If that’s not the issue, then I’m at a loss. 🤷♂️

It’s pretty good! Sometimes objects or certain sounds might come through a little too loud or weird, just because the source is 5.1 or 7.1, but that’s not too often. It’s pretty fun to have height speakers to add to the grand scale of audio around you. 😁🤘

My first receiver was the Denon AVR-X2600, it had height virtualization, that seemed to work better using bipole speakers for the side and rear channels. The Atmos like sound is nice and works nice, realistically, doesn’t come close to actual ceiling speakers. I think this receiver runs around the $400 US ?
@@kunalkarautiya8244 Almost budget level 7 channel receivers have Atmos height virtualization, like the Yamaha RX-V6A and the Denon S760H. But as the comment above says, nothing beats actual speakers up above. But virtualization is a good start on a tight budget. 👍

The Denon 3800h can only handle a 11.1 Auro configuration since it can only process up to 11 channels with the aid of an external amp. Click on the link below and scroll down to where it says “Example layout for Auro 3D 11.1 channel System.” 👇

Yes, you can have a combo using internal amps and pre outs to external amps. But this AVR in particular can still only process up to 11 channels and 2 subwoofers. 👍

Should note this isn't available on all Denon and Marantz receivers. With denon you need the x4700h and up. The x3700h does not have auro 3d
I have 4400h denon. Even that's having Auro 3d. When you select front or rear height channels, auro 3d will be enabled.
Shouldn't we be able to power voice of God channel with Unused rear channel speaker outputs???
Not with certain Denon or Marantz AVRs. It’s just a matter of how they setup the software to process voice of god. The newer models are more flexible, from what I’ve seen in the user’s manual, though (x3800, x4800, Cinema50, etc)

@@cigaretteman5716 I'm not sure. Maybe have the home theater on its own dedicated circuit with a little more amps than the rest of the house? When I built my testing theater, I split the room - one half on one 20 amp circuit, and the other on a separate 20 amp circuit. So the 2 outlets behind the TV are on different circuits. I overcompensated, so that I never had to worry about too much power being used by any circuit. But I know not everyone has the luxury of starting from scratch like that. 🤷♂

Hi Ealan, I have a question about the auddessey editor app that I hope you can answer for me. I have a marantz sr 6015 running a 5.1.4 setup. My sub is the SVS pb 3000 and my room is 12x12x9. I've read that you'd have to run a minidsp and Rew before using the editor app and I also read one article that say if you have only one Sub that you don't have to run minidsp and Rew. I'm new to the hobby and not sure if I do or don't. I've already gotten the editor app and almost confident to apply it but with the DSP and the Rew I think that I'll make things worse and just go back to using xt32. Thanks for your channel I subscribed about six months ago.
Typically you’d want to run REW with a MiniDSP if you have more than one subwoofer. MiniDSP would help really dial in those subs, time alignment, etc, so that they work well together, instead of fight each other in your listening space. You should be fine running Audyssey. But I almost always go back in and make a few manual adjustments after Audyssey, because it’s never 100% accurate with all its calculations. 😄

Even in large you can put crossover! Put it in lfe+main. Large still play full range but your lfe jump in with the desired crossover(dubbel bass)

Eh…we’ll see. Auro is going to make some changes, but filing for bankruptcy is usually a strategic move. Interested to see what they do. Hopefully bring the price of licensing it down, so Auro can be included on less expensive receivers. 🤞
@@ealanosborne Unfortunately, I think that's wishful thinking. Dolby already has a foothold. Then there is DTS & IMAX. Europe kept Auro somewhat alive in the past.
Instead of multiple speakers all around the room I can achieve a real 3 D sound stage with my 2 front stereo speakers using cross talk cancellation.

Auro 3D is kinda useless except for some music upmixing. With next-to-none native Auro formats for movie or music, it would be a waste of time to design one's theater speakers physically for an Auro format.
Seems you have no clue about Auro3 d and the capability of the Auromatic upmixer for movies

True, but rumour has it that Auro3D upmixing is excellent and the speaker config providing a very immersive sound experience. So while movies might not be mixing Auro3D any more the processing capability and the speaker setup could still add a lot of value.
For a lot of corporations, filing for bankruptcy is a strategic move, not the end of the world.

Auro may be forced to innovate or die now. They may do a lot of restructuring (layoffs, department closures, etc). It may lead to re-evaluation of licensing costs, and it will force them to get more sales. So you may end up seeing more auditoriums with Auro 3d, and maybe even more consumer level equipement with the ability to process auro3d content.
@@railerswim It would be nice to see Auro 3D in more inexpensive Denon/Marantz receivers - at the very least down to the X3700H/SR6015 level, or whatever the next generation might be (X3800/SR6016, etc)
