  • Designed by William Cobb, this out & back wooden coaster was built in-house by the Frontier Construction Company. The coaster, built in 1978, was given the name Tornado after a real tornado hit Adventureland before its debut season in July 1974 forcing the opening of the park to be delayed until August of that year.
    This Adventureland is located near Des Moines in Altoona, Iowa.
    This is the exact same video as the Tornado 3D front seat on-ride POV video we posted for those that cannot view the 3D version on their phone or tablet. Here's the link to the 3D video we posted: • Tornado 3D front seat ...

    My uncle used to service this coaster back in the early 80s. He even lost part of his thumb on working on it. I remember going to visit him as a kid and thinking this was the biggest coaster I had ever seen

      +rantanamo I love this coaster soooo much, I'd give anything to service it. I've ridden almost forty roller coasters and this one is my favorite, even above Outlaw Run at Silver Dollar City. I love how it still has the buzz bars and seatbelts because what I do is I loosen my seatbelt so I can come out of my seat on the hills. Otherwise it hurts because the seatbelt will cut into my lap if I don't. And the last row of this coaster is SUPER INTENSE.

    I rode this when it was brand new when I was a kid. I’m glad it’s still there. I’m planning to do it again this weekend with my teenage nephew . I promised him I would ride any coaster in the park he wants to . Which is probably all of them.

    This was one of the first roller coasters I had ever been on, and other comments agree that this is a very bumpy ride. I was about 6’2” on my first run, and while I did have fun, my knees in that little cab being hit against the wall over and over would most likely not concur.

    During the summers of '81 and '82 (summer break from Iowa State), I was a brake operator for the Tornado. I'm sure they updated or automated the braking system somewhere along the way, but back then the only thing keeping people safe at the end of the ride was 19-20 year old me (or another operator), manually operating 3 brake levers that stuck out of the floor near the entrance to the station at the end of the ride. The brakes were normally closed (spring actuated), and as the coaster came into the station I had to hold open the brakes under the tracks, and slowing close them to slow the cars as they passed through the brakes. If I didn't open them enough, the cars would slam into the brakes at full speed, and that was....BAD. Then as the cars moved through the series of breaks I had to successively open and close each set of brakes until the train slowed to about walking speed while retaining enough momentum to reach the other end of the station platform for de-boarding. Leave them too open and the cars would fly through the station without stopping, which was also....Bad. Oh, and there were 2 trains running at a time back then.
    Operating the brakes was kind of an art, since the amount of braking needed varied my how full the cars where, and how heavy the people in them were. The more weight in the cars, the more braking that was needed. Also if it was raining, the brakes got wet and that effected how much braking pressure was needed. It was all mechanical, and I could "feel" the cars moving through the brakes via the levers I was holding, and used my eyes to judge the speed and momentum of the cars.
    I never let anyone slam into the brakes too hard, but there were a few times each day that I'd accidentally let the cars release into the station with a tad bit too much speed. The operators at the other end would then run towards the cars and slow them down manually by using their body weight to slow them down to a stop before reaching the end of the station. When you're doing it literally hundreds of times a day (about once per minutes when running two trains), it was inevitable that you'd slip up occasionally.
    At the end of this video, I don't see the levers and the brake operator standing at the near end of the platform, so I'd guess that at some point in the later '80's or '90's they automated or computerized the braking function.

    Please give tornado the RMC treatment. It has a pretty good layout for an RMC topper track development. I understand that its the first roller coaster Adventureland built, but even just a smaller RMC like twisted colossus would be a huge step up in Adventureland's roller coaster lineup. An amazing gerstlauer infinity coaster and an RMC hybrid would be a great 1 2 punch for this park. As RMC's are beginning to be more the craze, and as someone who goes to A-land every year, this could be a great investment for the park and make the park better as a whole to compete with parks like Silver Dollar City, Worlds of Fun, and other parks in the midwest area. Just a thought!

    The coaster, built in 1978, was given the name Tornado after a real tornado hit Adventureland before its debut season in July 1974 forcing the opening of the park to be delayed until August of that year. THE TORNADO was also giving that name for the reason was cause the costers flew off its tracks and lucky landed in the ADVENTURELAND BAY of water, no one was hurt or killed from it lucky. THE TORNADO RIDE, is also known as THE DEADLEST RIGHT in the whole park, when it hits it's a QUICK TURN JURK, that send its costers flying from it, in mid air. sence then, ALOT OF WORK was done to the ride, to make it fun and safe now for EVERYONE to enjoy!!

    • @ComedyWastedMedia
      @ComedyWastedMedia Год назад +1

      i think you need to get your facts in order fella haha. TORNADO got its name from a tornado hitting the park the year of its "opening", which is what caused the coaster to have a delayed opening till the following season.
