This coaster is far more intense than this video describes. It’s crazy and it’s built on the side of a mountain! Once when we were about halfway through with the first stretch, we saw a Black Bear standing on that gray boulder on the right, above everyone, waiting for the breeze from the coaster as it went by. Lol, I was like WOW!
This ride is brutal at night during a thunderstorm. I’m a part of a rollercoaster group called ACE (American coaster enthusiasts) and we get to stay after hours or before the park opens during events and get special extended ride times exclusive to our group. We got one on boulder dash once, it was maybe 11 at night with lightning and got really dark😅
If you are going to ride this ride, I recommend both the front and the back seat. They provide completely different rides and are both fantastic. Do it at night if you get the chance.
The lush greenery of the woods just adds a lot of character and makes it interesting. The landscape and the ride design complement each other very nicely. On my "Ride Before I Die" list.
I am from London, England, U.K. and I've been lucky to have ridden this, one of my targets. It is brilliant, intense and wonderfully terrain hugging with plenty of air. Terrific.

I live only 15 mins away from Lake Compounce, so I'm lucky I get to ride this consistently it never gets old to me. When Boulder Dash opened in 2000, my parents took me for my 10th birthday. I ended up riding it five times in a row I was hooked. Whoever designed this track knew what they were doing. The scenery of Mt. Southington, speed, amount of turns and humps is perfectly balanced. The video doesn't do it justice it's WAY more intense than it looks. It thrashes and tosses you around but man the rush is amazing. This is by far the best wooden coaster I've been on. It's worth visiting Lake Compounce for Boulder Dash alone.
I recently rode Boulder dash september 2021 and it is one of the most intense wooden roller-coasters I have ever ridden. For only being 21 years old it shakes and rattles like an older ride.
Love this thing. I think a huge part of what makes it awesome is how it careens through the woods, as opposed to a big track structure just smack in the middle of a park.
There's really only one spot that's gotten painful in the past couple of season,s right at the end. They're completely retracking that section for the 2017 season.
I love this roller coaster. It's a fast, fast out and back ride built into the side of a mountain. The sounds and mechanical feel on the wood make it an updated version of old style coasters.
As someone who grew up afraid of roller coasters I went to Lake Compounce yesterday and rode all the coasters and Boulder Dash was my second favorite after Zoomerang. The speed is so intense that it had me holding on for my life 😂 this is a legendary coaster but it is pretty rough especially towards the end
This ride, hands down, is the best roller coaster I have ever been on in my life. Not too slow, not too fast, and bumpy enough to give you minor injuries.
Finally went to Lake Compounce yesterday as it's about 100 minutes from my house. Waited for the complete back on Boulder Dash. Holy shit is this ride intense. Definitely my favorite classic woody. Wicked Cyclone at SFNE is my favorite wooden coaster, but it's a hybrid so I can't really say it's "wooden." =P Boulder Dash is amazing and worth the visit alone.
HellAshes Exactly. It's the track that determines what type of coaster it is. So a steel hybrid coaster like Wicked Cyclone has a wooden support structure with steel tracks and a wooden hybrid coaster has a steel support structure with wooden track (like the world famous Cyclone at Coney Island).
I rode this more than 15yrs ago and I still talk about this coaster. This was hands down one of the best wooden coasters I've ever been on. I heard that they changed an element on it a few yrs ago but still looks as good as it was back then. Can't wait to go back cause it is definitely worth the trip.
Yesterday, I went to Lake Compounce. Totally recommend this ride if you want to go on a woody. The drops and hills are steeper than it looks and is faster than it looks.
Boulderdash is one of my favorite coasters and I've ridden quite a few. The reason I rate this coaster so high is because it gives you a feeling like the damn thing is about to come off the tracks at any moment. It just feels completely out of control. I still feel like el toro is the better coaster but this one is unique
Yeah. The last stretch of track (where its straight and going up and down over the humps before pulling back into the station) looks kind of weak in the video, but in reality the car is going so fast that you are getting air time off the seat on all of those humps. Not a ride for people with back or neck problems for sure, and primarily because of that last section.
I think part of what makes this ride feel SO damn fast is being surrounded by trees on either side of the track so you have constant, close reference points for just how fast you are going. All speed is relative, so being immediately surrounded on all sides by objects that are not moving will definitely increase the sense of speed versus most coasters which are high up in the open air!
Been on this coaster many times. Ride is a lot more intense and faster than it looks in videos. Best wooden coaster ever. And Lake Compounce is a beautiful park.
You know, when you think about it, this is the REAL Son of Beast. Both are notable for taking their paths through the woods, and geniologically, sons are typically smaller than fathers through childhood (as is the case with Boulder Dash being a lot smaller than The Beast). But mostly, it's because both are woodies that go through a forest for the duration of the ride. Son of Beast had NONE of The Beast's traits.
Well that was never the point of Son Of Beast. Back when Kings Island was Paramount's Kings Island they branded it as the "bigger and badder" sequel to The Beast. They wanted Son Of Beast to be superior to The Beast in every aspect and of course that wasn't the case. If you ask me Boulder Dash is in NO way comparable to Son Of Beast, it doesn't meet the criteria to be the Son Of Beast.
If you live in CT you feel me, your trying to eat in piece near the trolley tracks and all you hear every 2 minutes is brattttatatatatatattaatattaatatatatand SCREEEEEEEMMMMM when the ride passes 😂
This is so true- to put it in perspective the tallest drop on this ride is 115 ft while the Incredible Hulk at Universal is 104 ft! i’ve been on this ride multiple times and I’m TERRIFIED of rollercoasters and drops so def great

I haven’t been on Boulder Dash in years. Last time I went on it, I was about 7 or 8 years old. Man, what a rush that was! I thought that it was gonna break since it’s a wooden roller coaster. I screamed out of my mind because of how scared I was when it became super intense. I would have gone on it in summer 2019, but I didn’t get the chance to go on it. If I go to Lake Compounce again this year, I’m definitely going on Boulder Dash with my friends. It’ll be my first time going back on it in god knows how many years. Voted the world’s best wooden 🎢! i got to go on this late at night once during a staff party. my oldest brother had worked there many years ago and took me. BD + Darkness is the single best ride I've ever been on.
That was a rickety ride. I can't imagine the back seat experience with that roughness. Beautiful scenery though. I love rollercoasters moving through the woods.👍🏽❤️
It's hard to disagree that it's one of the best wooden coasters in the US, and certainly unique as a terrain coaster. I rode it on July 26 (2016) and it was great fun at breakneck speed. However, it was a bit rougher than I had expected; it had been retracked in 2007, and perhaps showing wear again. The worst part were the last few bunny hops/double ups, which were spine jolting. I got a mild ache from them, which suggests that they need adjusting (the track and my back). Perhaps the hops even need a bit of straightening, a suggestion that's probably coaster heresy.
YO!!! That Wildcat is a true heirloom coaster! Our WWII vets rode this coaster when *they* were kids. Yeah, depending on the time of year, it can be a bit cranky until they reshim it, but I never miss a chance to ride on a true vintage coaster.
What a nifty wooden roller coaster this one is! I wouldn't mind having this one in my own back yard, if that were possible or permitted. This ride is definitely one-of-a-kind, due to how it makes use of the wooded terrain like that!
Rode this coaster for the very first time yesterday, easily the roughest and fastest coaster I have been on to this day, but in a very good way. My favourite ride at Lake Compounce. The video doesn't do justice to how fast and rough this ride is, but still an awesome video all the same.
Ya, it got me good. I haven't sprained my neck like that in a long time - if ever. I thought it might be lasting but it was gone when I got off the ride. Body hanging in but I'm juiced up with a good base of glucosamine in my system at present and that may have made an enormous difference. 'One pill makes you larger and one pill makes you small - and the one* (dose) your mother gives you don't do anything at all.' Triple doses for three or four days 'cured' me of about 15 years of left hand strain from classical guitar work. I'll swear by the stuff. It's great you don't need to take it all the time, once there's a good enough base of it in your system - you can lay off and just monitor yourself-as needed. I'll just forget about it for a long time. But back to the point. Boulder Dash ROCKS ! ! ! ! ! !
I love this coaster. I trekked from Allentown, PA to Bristol CT opening year and it was during their halloween weekends. It was one of the colder nights so th epark was a bit empty the queue lines were so short they let us stay on (Since we rode the middle) for 6 straight trips. Boulder Dash is my favorite coaster with The Phoenix coming in at number 2
What an amazing ride. This looks like a ride that really test the wear and tear of a track as well as the coaster train. I love your videos, CoasterForce!
A thrill seekers dream. This is for people who like to ride world record rides (fastest Wooden roller coaster in US) and it's for people who don't like corkscrews or straight drops! I personally will throw up, not to make you cringe, but I can't stand corkscrews or loops.... 100ft drop..... 60mph. Perfect for a 12 year old girl like me :D
I went to hold my glasses onto my face but since the ride is so bumpy I almost knocked them off. Luckily, I was able to grab them and hold onto them for the rest of the ride. Someone a few seats over lost her cell phone.
Hands down my favorite coaster. As many others have stated, the video doesn't do it justice...it's a pure adrenaline rush. My biggest worry the first time riding this gem was that what would happen if a tree branch fell on the tracks...I mean, how would anyone know it was there? And going through the forest like that, you didn't know what waited around every corner. If you can get there, Boulderdash is a must-ride for any coaster enthusiast.
CrispyChicken44 They are at a safe enough distance where nobody on the ride would be capable of touching them, they always trim them back during maintenance time when necessary. You are perfectly safe on it.
I went on this and screamed the entire time with my friend. We screamed at the end. We screamed in the middle. We screamed when we were going up the hill at the very very beginning and this old-ass grandpa in the way back (we were front row) yelled SHUT UP ... But we didn’t lol
The “White Knuckle Mile” here in New England.....one of the most intense and exciting wooden roller coasters in existence. Pure speed, tons of air time, and the scenery is great. Ride it at night!!!
From top of first hill till it breaks it's 1:12 seconds, akin to getting beaten up by the best designed ultimate fighter on the planet. THIS thing ROCKS the rough ride to heaven! I don't think any coaster compares with what Boulder Dash is all about.
The setting of a coaster going through a forest is so beautiful. Unbelievable!
I was just thinking about this. The Beast, Raven, Mystic Timbers, Grizzly do the same.
Just what I was thinking, I love the way it's nestled in between the trees.
It really does look beautiful.
You don't have much time to enjoy it. You're moving 60 miles per hour, so everything kinda just flies past

One thing it doesn't capture is the brutality of the double up. Phew!
I highly suggest you ride this LAST because you WILL have a migraine and the duration of the ride makes you feel like your neck is about to snap
Lake compounce is a great park and boulder dash makes it super great and its my FAVOURITE ride at lake compounce
Damn, this thing looks like if it was a lot faster than 60 mph...... I WANT TO RIDE THIS!!!!!!!!!
you should it was funny i rode it on my birthday
AmericanBananaMan Wow, maybe I should then...... looks like the Beast on crack.
It was... Funny?
No one asked you and i don't give 4 flying shits about what you think
AmericanBananaMan Repeat after me: CALM THE FUCK DOWN!
Alto Dragon61667 It's not the fastest wooden coaster in the US
Alto Dragon61667 it is
Dogorski nope
Lightning Rod is the fastest, at 73 miles per hour. This doesn't even come in the top ten.
This isn’t even close to the fastest in the us. Lightning rod is. That is a lot faster than this. Do your research before giving out false information
With the person I was next to on this, it was one of the best moments in my life.
Just found out that I'm related to the person who created the park, small world i guess.
That's awesome! Do you get some kind of discount?
Instant nostalgia from summer camp.. thank you
My glasses fell off mid ride
“Lake compounds is not responsible for anything lost, stolen, or broken”
Julian Stevens I can hear this comment
Never a good idea to wear glasses on any ride
I went to hold my glasses onto my face but since the ride is so bumpy I almost knocked them off. Luckily, I was able to grab them and hold onto them for the rest of the ride. Someone a few seats over lost her cell phone.
Hands down my favorite coaster. As many others have stated, the video doesn't do it justice...it's a pure adrenaline rush. My biggest worry the first time riding this gem was that what would happen if a tree branch fell on the tracks...I mean, how would anyone know it was there? And going through the forest like that, you didn't know what waited around every corner. If you can get there, Boulderdash is a must-ride for any coaster enthusiast.
good god this thing is scary i felt like i would fly out of the stupid thing while riding it, never doing a rollercoaster again
Seat belts on this ride have been known to pop off XD
Is this in Connecticut?
yes
i hate you and your grandmother who died of leukemia when you were in her womb
MegaRKLein good for you
Incredible coaster with ridiculous pacing! Thundering through the woods at that speed is just amazing 😍 my no.4 coaster 👌
I love in ct
Went recently, and this coaster was amazing!
They should cut some of those branches that stick out to the track. That scares me, someone could get hurt or decapitated.
No they shouldn't, it is inspected everyday for things like that. Keep the trees!
I said cut, not cut down. I'm all about the trees being there, but having tree branches stick out like, 5 feet into the track doesn't seem safe.
CrispyChicken44 They are at a safe enough distance where nobody on the ride would be capable of touching them, they always trim them back during maintenance time when necessary. You are perfectly safe on it.
Good, glad to hear, Don. :)
This ride has actually has a history of decapitation
That's one fast wooden coaster and i love the overgrown greenery , must have been a tough install !
When it was built it was the worlds fastest wooden coaster not sure now though.
I went on this and screamed the entire time with my friend. We screamed at the end. We screamed in the middle. We screamed when we were going up the hill at the very very beginning and this old-ass grandpa in the way back (we were front row) yelled SHUT UP ...
But we didn’t lol
The grandpa was right, stfu
Yeah ikr the grandpa was right
The “White Knuckle Mile” here in New England.....one of the most intense and exciting wooden roller coasters in existence. Pure speed, tons of air time, and the scenery is great. Ride it at night!!!
That looks like one of the coolest roller coasters ever!
This was the best roller coaster I rode so far!
This coaster is awesome. We go on it a bunch of test every year. One of my favs
The most beautiful rollercoaster in the world I've ever seen.
Kent-Ove Prestberg check out The Beast at Kings Island
@@anthonywhite4831. That will do 😉
From top of first hill till it breaks it's 1:12 seconds, akin to getting beaten up by the best designed ultimate fighter on the planet. THIS thing ROCKS the rough ride to heaven! I don't think any coaster compares with what Boulder Dash is all about.
I love how it wraps along with terrain
