The new oil on the dipstick was nice and clean looking. Well, after a couple of beers BSing with my neighbor who is a heavy diesel mechanic, I showed him the jar. I asked why the hell the oil was so nasty black after just 30mins.... He explained to me that manufactures coat the internals with phosphorus and this aids in the break in process. I told him Honda recommends a 5hr break in and then an oil change. Giving this some more thought, dropping the oil after such a short 30 min break in period might not be the best recommendation. Granted it should break in eventually, but I think maybe something a little longer than 30mins might be a good idea. For what it's worth, I didn't see any metal in my 30minute oil. Based on your videos I purchased an HRX217 this morning from my local lawn care place. I love it. It even pushes easy without the drive wheels engaged so not really an issue. Being able to stop, pick up a stick or rock, and then continue without having to restart is great. Thanks for the videos. Steve H. Traverse City, Michigan
I bought this exact model a month ago when Home Depot was running them for $200 off. It replaced a nearly 40 year old Honda HR214 SX that I bought used 14 years ago for $100. I love the new mower already and look forward to using this one for quite a while. It was a few different videos of yours that solidified my decision on this model. Thank you!
Did the first mow with mine this weekend, then an oil change to synthetic. A couple neat things you didn't mention, if you want to move the mower without the blades engaged, just push both handles without hitting the yellow button on the blade lever. And for cleaning up fall leaves, Honda recommends doing the Carolina squat, raise the front up a notch or 2 to keep from pushing the leaves around, which helps as you have the individual height adjusters.
I have this exact model, and it's the same one in a previous video where I told you the engine was going out. I took it to a different service center (Honda) where they took it apart and found the engine SO badly damaged internally, they couldn't determine what failed. (Likely the other service center performed the recall incorrectly) They reported what they found to Honda who immediately sent out a brand new engine. 2 week turnaround, in the middle of mowing season, with a new engine AND a holiday in the middle? Not bad!
Thanks for sharing! Glad they swapped the engine so quick! Curious how soon this happened after you bought the mower? I just bought the HYA a couple weeks back!
The mower is roughly 1.5 seasons old. It was perfect throughout the first season, then came the recall, during which we're guessing they re-assembled the engine incorrectly. (Yours likely got all the updates during original assembly) This season is when things went "sideways." I was surprised at the amount of internal damage they told me they encountered, It still ran fine, but was using oil & smoking pretty badly. Keep the oil serviced in yours, & use ethanol free fuel (if you can find it) & it should go a long time. I agree with most of his review here. I do NOT engage the drive while circling trees. (It pushes easily enough) I often stuff the mower under one particular evergreen tree, but I've never knocked the air filter cover off. I've never even knocked it loose! It does get a little light on the front wheels when the catcher is really full, & being 2.5 bushels, the catcher can be a bit heavy when emptying. Keep in mind, you have a 5 year warranty, and even though they've stopped making the mower, they still make the parts so its all good!
You don’t understand camshaft in plastic is made failures sistem for honda gcv/x if put oil for that engine after 6 minute gets melted why is made with petroleum but also the gasoline is made with petroleum and in fact is shit fuck for everyone
I bought this same Honda with the Nexite deck, but with the more basic select drive system. I’ve had it for around 10 years. It’s by far the most high quality walk behind mower Ive ever used. I been considering snatching up another one before they are all gone but can’t justify having 3 walk behind Honda lawnmowers. I also have a Honda steel deck side discharge.
I have the hrx217vka for 2 seasons now. Never been in love with a mower in my life. Every time I need to mow the lawn I know I won’t be fighting the grass. Now, I change the oil and sharp the blades every season, did the breaking like JB’s video. I take care of her, she takes care of me.
If you are 6' 1" or taller, the high adjustment is still too low. I had to install some clamps through the bottom adjustment hole to lock in at my height. I've done this on other mowers too. This is my second new Honda and the first lasted 9 years before the self-propelled drive went out this summer
I have had my Hrx 217 for over 8 years in my lawn company I mow like 3 to 4 houses a week with it and a big shopping center where our big mowers don’t fit the 5th year of ownership the hydro transmission went out on it but Honda took care of me and replaced the tranny no charge it was a $350 repair I was told the transmission was upgraded it’s on it’s 3 third year with replaced transmission and runs great not a very fast mower but very reliable and beautiful cut quality.
My 11 year old HRX217HYA transmission finally went bad. Tried changing out the transmission fluid from a video I saw. I couldn't even get the input shaft to turn the output shaft. Plus, what a pain to take the mower apart. And the dread of putting it back together. But I found a Home Depot about 55 miles from me that still had these in stock, at $699, less than I paid years ago. Put it together this morning and plan on trying it out this afternoon. This was after much deliberation on getting a battery powered mower. I beat the heck out of this mower with the tree roots, potholes, etc. It owed me nothing.
After I fixed the hydraulic fluid level on mine with a flush, refill and airbleed- it's a beast! All you need to do is steer! It's a late 2021 /early 2022 model. The only Honda problem that remains is the low-speed idle jet size. Someone needs to make a video showing which jet it is and how to make it ever so slightly larger...which will cure the 'surging during idle' (once warm) issue.
This is the one I purchased. Made a review few years ago. Paid $899. It’s not my favorite even though it’s top of line. I had nothing but issues with mine. Starting it is an issue during spring time since it’s temperature sensitive, overhead valve leaks every time and took Honda 3 times to fix, and mower was way too slow when I first bought it. Had to fix it which I made a video on. I’d give this mower a 7/10. My mower before the hrr216vka id give a 9/10
@@GarageGear I did not. I did replace my thermowax due to not starting everytime. Didn’t completely solve the problem. It only starts when temps are above 80, first pull
I commented on the last Honda video saying I grabbed one of these on sale and I’ve gotten to mow with it about 10 times. It’s still the best mower I’ve ever owned and it’s not even close. I’m not the biggest fan of the drive system, it’s awkward and you have to teach yourself the best way to use it. The blade stop is by far my favorite feature I never knew I needed and I’ve basically retired my bag because it mulches so dang well
I bought mine just before Memorial Day. The only issue I had with it is the valve cover leaked oil. The dealer fixed it under warranty. I just mowed for only the 5th time having changed the oil after the first and fourth mows. It puffs grey smoke for 20 seconds at initial startup and I can smell a hint of burning oil when I’m mowing. I’m assuming the rings are still bedding into the cylinder as it’s not overfilled. If it keeps going for too long I will take it in. Regarding the clutch lever. It isn’t only an on-off it is also variable speed up to the max set by the hydro lever. I feather the clutch lever when I need to move a little slower around obstacles but still have assist. It is definitely worth it to get this mower while still available.
I now have 5.1 hours on my HRX217HYA. Overall I like it. It's huge though. It dwarfs my old troybilt push mower. Backing up kinda sucks on it so mowing tight areas suck with it but overall I like it. I still get random pieces of grass sticking up after I'm done mowing. Not sure what's up with that. I think it's the best option if you can't get a HRC model with the manual choke and GXV engine. Also I recommend the Honda side deck protection strips. They help a lot. Mine are already scraped up and they protected my plastic deck. And you need to clean under the rear flap. It hangs on to clippings and they need to be blown out.
I’ve got this one with a little bit of difference. Probably because mine is about seven years old maybe a little older. Never any problems still runs and looks like new and I really love this mower.
I just bought one of these last weekend (6/29/24). I pulled it out of the box, unfolded the handle, put in the Honda oil, put in 3 week old non-ethanol gas, made sure the fuel valve was on, and tried to start it. Nothing. I checked to make sure the plug wire was on tight. Nothing. I pulled the plug out to see if I could see a spark while pulling the cord, nope. I brought it back to where I bought it and they are looking it over now. A buddy of mine bought a VYA from the same store the same day, and his worked flawlessly. I'm really disappointed, but this is usually what happens to me when I buy something big. At least my box had the green dot so I know the cam issue was repaired.
Mine does this from day one and it is almost 4 years old. I found that if you pull the engine over about 6 times slowly then one good pull it fires right up.
I have this mower and had it a few years now. It’s the best mulched I’ve ever owned and second best mower. The best non mulcher was a commercial grade snapper I had for over twenty years.
SO glad I came across this episode. THANK YOU!!! I had no idea Honda was a getting out the ICE game here in the US. After careful consideration of this model's limited flaws, and after speaking with the local service center; I felt absolutely confident the HRX217HYA was worth purchasing. Finding one was a challenge. Limited supply at Acme Tool. $879. I did not hesitate to place the order. I'm anxious for the unboxing! Genuine shame the sun is setting on these, as the entire field of walk behind's is littered with garbage otherwise.
@@mikegarrard9864 Watch for a giant grin in the mirror ☺️ Mine arrived with small, blue sticker on the factory label and was missing a sheet of protective film on the cowl. Recall performed prior to shipping, I presume. Having sold a previous Honda model several years ago (regrettably), the unboxing, initial oil change, and first mow was like a homecoming, honestly. Its idle is a bit rough (sputters a bit, though thankfully, it isn’t surging. I’ve always found Honda carbs to be sensitive for some reason); But under a load, it’s divine! Be sure to run ethanol-free fuel. A Honda will call you out on that every time. The mowing experience is predictably FIRST-CLASS. I do not have a single regret, and I fully intend to keep this mower long enough to become the fertilizer for the grass it continues to mow.
Last year I replaced our old Honda with a new HRX mower and love it so much I bought a new HRX217 this past May to keep new in the box until the day I need it.
This is a great mower. I've had mine for 2 seasons and no issues. I'm afraid to take it in for the recall but may just do it here at some point. The HYA really works well and you do get used to the clutch over time. I've also got an HRN216VKA that I swap between and really impressed with it too.
@@MixingGBP Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too, but only thing is that this has always been a 2-3 pull to start mower. My HRN216VKA with the update is always first pull… so makes me wonder.
@@MixingGBP Yeah, just assumed it was normal as it runs perfect otherwise. Maybe in the fall before the shops loose their experienced replacement folks and after business slows down maybe.
I have the honda hrx 217hya. Still works great for a 6 year old push mower. They say that there is a hazard when I pull the rope. Homedepot price $729 dropped to $709
Much thanks for the review! I currently have a RWD Husqvarna with the GCV160 that I bought used off of FB. Converted the choke to manual and it has been reliable, but I noticed a crack in the deck a few weeks ago. Decided to treat myself to a new one of these before they become extinct new.
AWESOME review JB! I do agree with you on engaging the drive if you have many turns to make. Not the most ergonomic system but i really like the hydrostatic drive! As a Star Trek "trekie," i was going for the spaceship model! Haha. Great attention to detail as always JB. This was an exceptional one to watch! What's up for the weekend? Using the pool i hope. Thanks again my friend!

If he’s a young guy tell him to buy another and put it away . It would be great to have a new one in 20 or 25 years , or in a number of years you could sell it for more . I love the HYA hydrostatic transmission. My first was in 82 I think . My first plastic deck was in 92 or 93 . I think it was a Harmony but don’t remember for sure. Now I’ve bought these 2 just to have . I bought a ZL1 Camero to park in my garage for the same reason they aren’t going to make them anymore . Great video . The future is going to to look very different and I’m not liking what I’m seeing .

Sold my HRN216 to friend after seeing this one and ordered this exact model, finally came in and handle was trashed, box OK, ordered another one, should come in 7/10/24, hopefully intact, grass was lowl, lots of weeds, not pristine, and then it rained and it grew with a vengeance, had to cut medium yard with my Stihl weed eater, huge bummer. Bonus was H/D military discount and their Pro X discount (a/c contractor) for a total of $199 off.
You can have a million happy customers but the few hundred unhappy ones you’ll hear from the most. These individual cases are anecdotal and, unless stats are compiled and verified for a wide range of customers, can only be taken as such. Just like the people who had a Mopar in the 90’s when they had a bad run of transmissions who still to this day cannot let it go and tell everyone their transmissions are crap. They are a small but highly vocal group. I’ve not once had a transmission issue in any Mopar I’ve had. As with everything your mileage may vary.
Great review! I was all ready to buy one, but then you mentioned the drive system is a pain if you have a lot of trees/obstacles; which I do. So, thanks for saving me $1,000.
Sir I just bought the HRN 216HYA Not VKA. It's the base model with steel deck but it has the throttle control & blade stop & the drive system is fantastic around obstacles in the yard. It's such a pleasure to use & its $649. I really think you should give that a look. Even the HRN 216 VKA without the blade stop & throttle control has a the same drive system that's really comfortable & awesome to use. I believe this model Honda will work better for you & save you some cash also & you still get a outstanding mower.
The features of this Honda mower is why they were considered the best. With Honda leaving the US market there’s a void left in the market. Ok? Stihl is trying to fill that void. Yes! The make battery mowers. This year they brought from the EU there gasoline mowers. I have looked at them. But, they’re so new and untested here. GP; how about you check one out? I would like your advice instead of someone trying to sell it. They’re not cheap! Stihl with hydro drive is $1,400. The Stihl has a throttle and very easy oil change. I wish it had the Kawasaki engine which is the gold standard (sorry Honda). Great video!

JB please do a comparation between the blades on HRN vs HRX. Both mower have different blades design and I believe the one on HRX has more lift. Also, I want to know if the blades on HRX can be put on HRN? Thank you
Love your videos JB. Always great information. Do you recommend using 5 w-30 engine oil in the HYA. I noticed that Honda always puts10w-30 in. If you get a chance could you please do a review on the Honda HRC 216 Commercial grade lawnmower. Same thing. Honda is no longer producing them either and they are 30 pounds heavier than the HYA but I would be curious about your opinion on the quality. Thank so much and love the channel!
With the Honda's and Toto's can you explain the difference between the model numbers. There are so many different numbers my head spins. Love your videos keep making them . Thank You

Hey JB, love the channel and recent proud owner of a Honda HRN216 VKC. Had a quick question if you don't mind. I tipped mine over on it's left side (opposite of the oil) and gas started to leak out fairly quickly. Is that standard across all Honda HRN216 VKC models, or should I consider contacting warranty? TY
Hey my friend! I would definitely not tip it the direction you mentioned. If you need to tip the mower tip it with the oil spout down and the air filter up. Gas won’t leak out that way. Youre mower should still run fine.
Just bought this mower, one left at home depot, and the box was super dusty! Also got a honda tune up kit with oil/filter/spark plug... NY is making gas mowers illegal new sale January 1st 2025... Had to get a Honda
Really surprised the HRX217HYA has a hydrostatic transmission! Used to seeing those on tractors, that and the higher output engine make this one a sweetheart machine. Maybe we'll see well designed equipment at affordable cost when the global super villains lose power.
I just bought one and it is arriving today. Looks like they found a warehouse full and dealers have them. Question, did you say in a previous video Honda is good for actually lubricating bearings and wheels unlike Toro?
I am still confused. There is the brake lever and clutch lever with the yellow button. But no way to control the speed as you are mowing? You have to preset the speed using that orange lever? I ask this because the ones I have had you always control the speed by pressing a handle or lever and at times when the grass is tall you might have to press it more to get through the thick tall grass. But with this the speed is preset and you have to fiddle around that orange lever to change the speed?
@@TechCrazy the brake lever with the yellow button is for the blade. You let go of that and the blade will stop spinning. The other bail is the drive bail. And you can adjust the orange lever on the fly for your speed. This is their older method of speed control but long lasting. 👍
@@GarageGearThis is not the best description for speed control. The “speed shifter” sets the selected top speed desired for a given mowing condition. The handle is then pressed to provide infinite speed control up to maximum(fully depressed handle). Another way to describe its operation is you can set the “speed shifter” to maximum and depress the handle half way. The mower will then move at half the maximum speed. Again, the speed control is infinite between 0 and maximum.
Have been seeing great Honda products since I was a kid in the 70s when my father bought a motorcycle, car and generator. He was not good at maintaining anything and they just worked. I bought my first car in 1986, a Civic Si and maintained it like a lunatic. It never gave me any issues. Have been buying Honda cars etc ever since so I am sorry to hear they will stop making mowers. Love my Honda rototiller and was going to buy a mower but have no interest if they will stop producing parts. I also have zero interest in pull starts at my age.
Here's a question, for the 30 minute break in that you recommend, would it be better to just let it run without the blade engaged or with? I'm thinking with.
I have that mower but when I mow it leaves behind uncut grass. Why could that be? Do I need to sharpen the blade. I have probably cut the grass 15 times since it is new

I just bought a brand new one and it arrived today with the green sticker on the box, I also checked out the serial number and was good to go. Parts for Honda are already jumping in price. I would steer clear of buying a new one. Possibly a used one if you can get it at a good price. Good mower and the best cut I believe in a consumer mower.
I was one of the people who bought a new 2023 Honda mower with the cam issue. After injuring my arm with it and waiting 2 months for the repair, I gave up and returned it for store credit. I replaced it with a new-to-me 2006 Toro Super Recycler and have not looked back. That thing is awesome. They don't make mowers like this Toro anymore.
I just bought one of these and after two mows the motor surges at idle. Have any of you had this happen and if so, do you have any solutions that you could share with me?
I bought two and they are 100 dollars off now. The one I opened and used is great. The engine feels like a Lexus compared to the Husqvarna with Briggs engine I have. Very smooth and powerful. The question is the oil capacity though. It says 12-13.5 oz. Do you stay in the middle like 12.5 or 13? Honda does make a SAE 30 too and wondering if that would be a better choice for warmer climates.
I run 5w-30 synthetic in mine. Keeps it very clean and can use it year round per the owners manual. The lower the first number actually indicates better start up protection because it won't be as thick as a SAE 30 when it's cold but will still resist thinning out when hot like a SAE30. 5w-30 IMHO is the best choice across the board and Honda approves it. Win win.

@@GarageGear I see. I guess the 13.5 oz is when the engine is bone dry and if you are changing oil I guess around 1.5 oz is already sticking to the sides of the engine inside.
I take it this would be better to get over the key start super recycler, I can get this one for 899 and that toro model for 899. I really like the stow feature, but not crazy about the engine quality on toro. Of course I can get a VKAD for 629. Not sure if hydrostatic is worth 270 dollars for me.
Another great video. I'm in an awkward position; I have a small yard. (5000 square feet.) My thrifty side has wanted to buy this mower and milk it for the past 10 years. Then comes my logical side, Im 65, and my knees and hips aren't what they used to be. So I fear it will have to be a rider for me. 😑
My HRX is excellent. I was very disappointed, though, when I found out the mower deck’s appearance is ruined when gas is spilled on it. As far as I know, there is no remedy for this problem.

I was surprised at the amount of internal damage they told me they encountered, It still ran fine, but was using oil & smoking pretty badly.
Thanks for sharing this jet fixer! Nice to see them standing behind their product!

Awesome djderek! Welcome back to the tribe lol!
I bought this same Honda with the Nexite deck, but with the more basic select drive system. I’ve had it for around 10 years. It’s by far the most high quality walk behind mower Ive ever used.
Awesome Victor! You put that thing to work
My 11 year old HRX217HYA transmission finally went bad.

I wonder what the problem was! Keep me posted!
Mine does this from day one and it is almost 4 years old. I found that if you pull the engine over about 6 times slowly then one good pull it fires right up.

I just bought one and it is arriving today. Looks like they found a warehouse full and dealers have them. Question, did you say in a previous video Honda is good for actually lubricating bearings and wheels unlike Toro?
Hey Jeremy I would lubricate the wheels and bearing on your mower if that is what you’re asking.
Thank you for the information JB

I've seen another video using heat and it worked great.
I thought the Nexite deck has lifetime warranty. Maybe reach out to a local dealer to see if they can offer a solution.
@@rezanorouzian8198 It’s a cosmetic issue and is not covered by the Honda warranty
I have an older one electric start… best mower ever!!
ROCK ON MIKE!
I just bought this mower. I called Honda and they said they will carry parts 7-10 years after model discontinuation.
@@guppygb6078 good to know! Thanks for sharing guppy!
Nice looking machine but..Take half of the levers off it and I'd be interested. Just to much for me, old school😊

Thank You for Sharing! What do you think of powersmart self propelled lawn mower on Amazon?

I have heard (not 1st hand experience) that they are difficult to get parts for.
What about the one with the Briggs and stratton motor?
@@minnesota-hk1vpThey are absolutely junk & stay away from them. Ongoing issues & can't get parts. Every reviewer says the same thing. DONT BUY A POWERSMART IF YOU VALUE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!!!!
@@minnesota-hk1vp I’m not a big fan of those newer briggs Motors. Tend to have some issues. And just a heads up PowerSmart does not stand behind their products and getting parts is complicated

Just picked one up for $700 at Home Depot they are pretty nice.

If you ever want to come to Ohio to review an HR21 (original Honda mower!) vs HRX vs HRC, can make that happen!
@@keithb2024 haha I’ll keep you posted Keith! Love that idea! 👍
Eventually they’ll stop making parts, then what? I have two Hondas, love them, but I don’t think I’d buy a new one. I had a Toro in the past, lasted a long time, probably look into their lineup.
Honda is still making these mowers and parts, just not selling the mowers in the US market. It shouldn’t be an issue to get parts, they’ll still be making them.
@@tonym6920 they will still be making parts just won’t be making mowers. Check out some of my Toro videos. If you are going to go that way, I would try to look for an older one.
@@GarageGear Yes, try to find a Toro model 20055. I have an 18 year old one and it's still great.
