Had my HRN216 for 3yrs great power n speed cuts great, only issue is catching bag, the top section it lets all the fine dust ect blow through to your face breathing it in, great mower but if I had known this fault I would have bought something different, my last Honda engine mountfeild mower was 26yrs when it gave up never an issue
As Home owner, this mower is no brainer. Price can be scared but dont worry, you will get "profit" for a while because you are doing the work. I recommend the bicycle thread for better user experience, doing work like walking on park. Maintenance is easy, a basic tool kit is all you need.
I've had my Honda HRN216VKA since 2019 and had no issues for the past 5 years. Last weekend, the front wheel height adjuster snapped off. Because the HRN216 only has left side height adjuster, the whole front axle (44310-VR8-N00ZA) needs to be replaced. It's a $30 part, but still hard to find.
@@GarageGear Yes, I found part from an online retailer for $50. However, I cannot get the front plastic cover off due to two of the bolts won't come off. There is a nut with flat metal square piece which cuts into the plastic and cannot unloosen bolt. There is no way to get a tool in to grab hold of the nut to stop it from spinning. I now have a large paperweight.
In Australia you can still get Honda mowers and I might get a wb20 and it has a 163cc gx160 I love Honda it has been my dream to get a new gx engine I can’t lie
I got one, checked the box as per your video. It was the only mower I could find that really felt well-built and really looked quality. It's been running like a champ and cuts beautifully.
@GarageGear I've called a few places and even been to several locations that sell HRN216s. I've noticed that every single one of them have cracks in the engine block, not normal casting. Every dealership that I informed was flabbergast that they never noticed. Does yours have a crack in your block?? I'm trying to find some that don't but its hard. I suspect this is how the cracks occurred: Honda rolled them off the line to test with the original cam shaft, which causes internal damage, but they don't notice until it gives them issues which then they replace the faulty cam shaft with the new one. However, at this point the integrity of the block is just gone.
@@98765432123456 hey my friend! I heard about this a few times and I think it’s how they are coming out of their mold when made. No issues to report from those who own them.
Hey @GarageGear (JB!?), I saw one of your videos on Honda mowers, I believe it was the HRN to16, and you mentioned an issue that caused them to run uneven or cut off. It was not the magneto that the mechanic turned upside down that corrected it. It was a part that you mentioned purchasing and replacing, and he provided a link to it. It looked to be may be an inch long, and about the diameter of a pencil, and was copper or brass and color. Can you help me out with what the part is and what the issue was? Thanks!
Bought my Honda HR214 in 1986. Replaced one cable and one wheel so far. Nothing else other than air filter, oil and spark plug. Cranks on the first pull except for the first start of the season, then it takes 3 or 4 tries. 😂
Imagine saying Honda mowers suck and outing yourself to everyone in the room you've never used one. Good vid. I use an HRX217 myself for my lawn care business and it's been absolute workhorse for 5 years with no signs of stopping, and we're talking 30+ hours of mowing per week during the Spring, Summer, and Fall.
I garbage picked a Honda around the corner with the plastic deck its been our only push mower and doesn't ever fail to start first or second pull. I don't even maintain it lol.
I am sort of considering purchasing this mower and I was curious if you have experienced any of the issues I have seen on the web related to the self-propel caused by (wet) grass and twigs getting stuck in the belt area? You can see the "exposed" area that causes this issue at 5:21.
Hey cro! None whatsoever! I don’t have sticks and twigs all over my yard. Those that may may have issues but I don’t because I keep my yard tidy. I have never had an issue with grass interfering with the belt either. I also clean my mower deck about 3 times per year.
I purchased my first home a couple of days ago. Less than 4000 sf of cutting yard, I can't wait to go buy this mower. They are starting to disappear from the shelves, but I will travel to get one. Hopefully by the end of the month I will be starting to mow.

Im not a crazy electric powered save the world guy , my Ariens snowblower could never be replaced by electric but I’m sold on the electric mowers if you have a smaller yard. One of the best tools I’ve bought. Greenworks 80volt. It’s Awsome. . That being said. If you have something bigger and need more range. Can’t beat a Honda.
Have a Troy Built self propelled mower with a Honda engine. 16 years old now. Brought it out yesterday from winter storage, put in new gas, one pull and it starts. Note, have used synthetic oil since day one, change the spark plug every three years and clean and grease the axles and sharpen the blade 2x per season as I have a large yard.
I have three Honda mowers and an old Sears mower with a Honda engine on it and I haven’t had any problems with any of them. They will start first or second pull every time.
So what would be your recommendation on the best mulching self propelled push mower? Mainly focusing on mulching capability, but overall capability/ratings second
Just so its clear, my understanding is they will stop US production, but still make them overseas. If this is correct will they continue to sell the overseas models in North America?
You’re preaching to a choir member😂. I’m the owner of five older Honda GX engine powered self-propelled walk behind Honda mowers, the oldest 3 being 35 years give or take. The most recent was the only one I purchased new back in the 90’s and uses a small hydrostatic transmission. I paid an insane amount for that mower 25 years ago, compared to what the average homeowner spends for a 20” mower. In spite of the age, all 5 operate exactly as they should, but also have been properly cared for and stored inside. All five still have original engines and original blade clutches. The Honda mowers all cut beautifully, mulch very well and have a good solid “feel”. I doubt I’d ever use another brand walk behind.
I just had HD deliver one to me last week (none were in stock locally). Unfortunately the SN is in the range of the recall. Mine doesn't have a green sticker. It has a blue sticker. 🤔 I haven't opened it up to check for the "dimple", because I might just return it if it's part of the recall. I can't seem to find any mention online of a blue sticker being OK.

@@smitastic7030 That's interesting. Thanks for that feedback. There was only one serial number on mine (no "new" serial number) and it was definitely part of the recall. I did expect the box to have been opened and reused, but there was no sign of that. I tried to get some more information on Honda's website but finally gave up. Seems to me that considering Honda is no longer in this business that they are just dumping final stock. The thought also hit me that there's no motivation for Honda to rework an engine with the same care as originally building it. I returned the Honda today as a result. Picked up a new Toro which I suppose I should have in the first place.

@@GarageGearEnded up picking the Honda up. I am not disappointed!! Also someone is selling a mint John Deere 14SB, thinking of getting it since the Kawi is a better engine than the Briggs Quantum if I understood correctly.
Would you generally recommend this over the HRX base models for a 10,000 sq foot lawn? I am struggling to decide whether the extra $250 to move to the HRX217VKA is worth it. Appreciate any insights you may have.
Either one is good! I have the hrn and my neighbor has the hrx. You’ll get ball bearings in the wheels, a bigger engine and a better bagging system with the HRX.
I use an HRN216 VKA and VYA for mowing around 1 acre of grass. Works great and the only complaint is the drive belt is sorta difficult to get to and replace.
Hì JB. Just saw your video and went out and get the mentioned Honda at home depot. Upon taking it out of the box and did overall inspection, I found several hairline cracks at the right side of the engine wall (where the oil dip stick located), And look like it's been welded in some way. Compared to the other side of the engine (left) is smooth and no hair line cracks. Since it's passed QC from Honda, should I be concerned and just go ahead and returned to make sure. I'm a 61 years old guy and it's not convenient to pack or unpack the mower from the box and lift it. It's over a100lb box. Would like to hear your advice. Thanks
Thanks JB. That's a comfort to hear, not to worry about hair line cracks. That would save me a trip returning to Home Depot. This is my first Honda mower. Will start using and test out the mower tomorrow
Yo Garage Gear I bought a HRX yesterday & did the whole bottle pour in thing & when I checked the oil level after it was above the mushroom top thing on the dipstick I don’t see any writing that says full on it am I supposed to get it in between the lil xs at the bottom? Been a pain trying to slowly pump out a lil at a time.
Hey Johnny not exactly sure what the story is with your mower if you just bought it but I would dump out all the oil and refill it to the correct level with fresh oil.
@@GarageGear yeah I bought it new at HD idk why so much oil was still in it. Am I aiming for in between the cross X’s at the bottom of the dipstick for the oil level?
@@johnnytopside3702 yep you got it! When you put the dip stick in just rest it on the top. Don’t thread it down. Rest it, pull it out and check your level. That’s how to check it on a Honda mower nowadays.
How long do you figure Honda is going to continue to make parts for existing mowers? I figure with people stocking up, they’ll be more scarce than hen’s teeth. The ones available will be super expensive as dealer greed sets in.
According to a recent press release, Honda notified its power equipment dealers in October 2022, informing them that it would stop manufacturing lawnmowers and other gas-powered equipment effective September 2023.
Yeah I was deciding between those 2 as well. I just went with the Honda simply because there are more positive reviews on RUclips. For the dewalt there was only one. Seems to be a solid mower as well
NO mine blow up after 3 years Honda would not cover repairs garbage dump. From new with little use oil was black. Year latter found out about problems. I went back to my 20 year old John Deere with kawasaki engine, after 20 years after summer cutting oil looks new.
This Honda lawnmower is one of the absolute best lawnmowers you can buy on the market period. Honda makes great quality products and they are super reliable and rarely break by themselves.
No…….the plastic taps are not broken. The mower is brand new. From day one, the bag has never stayed in place. The steel bag hooks come off those tiny square plastic tabs easily. Poor design for a $600 mower.
These honda self propelled mowers have a GIGANTIC FLAW! Honda in their infinite wisdom decided a tiny red straw inside the fuel line would work well as a fuel filter. NOPE! it lets crap clog up the tiny little jet inside the carb and your honda is dead in the water. So to avoid this issue you have to put a real fuel filter inline with the fuel hose. Unfortunately I have searched everywhere to find a super short filter with the right inlet and outlets...And let me tell you thats about as rare as hens teeth. The amazon filters i ended up with have a tiny inlet /outlet that are so short they only have 1 single barb so of course they pop off and let all your gas leak out. Had to JB weld the POS filter just to sort of get it to fit! And on a side note I cant stand the jig saw puzzle that is the carburetor and all the crap that mounts to it. I hope yall never have to take one off because you need 3 hands and some reference pictures to put the damn thing back together. I am EXTREMELY disappointed in honda. Will never buy another one of these mowers!!!!
Just grabbed one of these today to go with my 2 year old HRX217HYA. I figure alternating between the two of them should easily last the rest of my useful mowing life. Ran the HRN once I got home and actually really impressed with it. Quite the upgrade from the old HRR216 I used to have and really not that big of a step down from the HRX with the hydro. Given that everything is going to throw away battery mowers, I figure might as well grab a spare while I still could, and I have slight concerns about support of the HRX composite deck 10 years down the line. Great video!

I’m up in Canada and went to the Honda Powerhouse Store up by me (north of Toronto). Guy told me as far as he knows they are just moving production out of the US but the mowers will still be available. Not sure if it’s going to change anything with quality.
Thanks for sharing this info my friend
As Home owner, this mower is no brainer. Price can be scared but dont worry, you will get "profit" for a while because you are doing the work. I recommend the bicycle thread for better user experience, doing work like walking on park. Maintenance is easy, a basic tool kit is all you need.
Good tips. Thanks for sharing!
@@DavidGipson-en4su did you end up finding it? If so where?
@@GarageGear Yes, I found part from an online retailer for $50. However, I cannot get the front plastic cover off due to two of the bolts won't come off. There is a nut with flat metal square piece which cuts into the plastic and cannot unloosen bolt. There is no way to get a tool in to grab hold of the nut to stop it from spinning. I now have a large paperweight.
@@DavidGipson-en4su sounds like you’re gonna have to get creative to make it work if you can

Awesome! That’s great to hear!
@GarageGear
I've called a few places and even been to several locations that sell HRN216s. I've noticed that every single one of them have cracks in the engine block, not normal casting. Every dealership that I informed was flabbergast that they never noticed.
Does yours have a crack in your block?? I'm trying to find some that don't but its hard. I suspect this is how the cracks occurred:
Honda rolled them off the line to test with the original cam shaft, which causes internal damage, but they don't notice until it gives them issues which then they replace the faulty cam shaft with the new one.
Thanks!
@@rossadams7048 did you see my other message?
@@GarageGear Hey JB, yes, I did, thank you. The part you identified is the auto-choke Thermowax actuator. Thanks again JB, keep up the great work!
Bought my Honda HR214 in 1986. Replaced one cable and one wheel so far. Nothing else other than air filter, oil and spark plug. Cranks on the first pull except for the first start of the season, then it takes 3 or 4 tries. 😂
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing my friend! Enjoy the mow this season.
That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing! Many more years to come
I garbage picked a Honda around the corner with the plastic deck its been our only push mower and doesn't ever fail to start first or second pull. I don't even maintain it lol.
Wow! They built them to last
I am sort of considering purchasing this mower and I was curious if you have experienced any of the issues I have seen on the web related to the self-propel caused by (wet) grass and twigs getting stuck in the belt area? You can see the "exposed" area that causes this issue at 5:21.
Hey cro! None whatsoever! I don’t have sticks and twigs all over my yard. Those that may may have issues but I don’t because I keep my yard tidy. I have never had an issue with grass interfering with the belt either. I also clean my mower deck about 3 times per year.
I’m kinda deciding between the Honda and a Toro 21564 I have. I have a yard with little nooks and crannies and the Personal Pace can be finicky.
I purchased my first home a couple of days ago. Less than 4000 sf of cutting yard, I can't wait to go buy this mower. They are starting to disappear from the shelves, but I will travel to get one. Hopefully by the end of the month I will be starting to mow.
Awesome! Go for it, my friend! You won’t be disappointed

@michaeldavis6550 thanks for the heads up. I will purchase today! Blessings to you as well.
Thanks for sharing this my friend
Have a Troy Built self propelled mower with a Honda engine. 16 years old now. Brought it out yesterday from winter storage, put in new gas, one pull and it starts.
Note, have used synthetic oil since day one, change the spark plug every three years and clean and grease the axles and sharpen the blade 2x per season as I have a large yard.
Solid plan Brian!
I have three Honda mowers and an old Sears mower with a Honda engine on it and I haven’t had any problems with any of them. They will start first or second pull every time.
Keep them as long as you can, my friend!
So what would be your recommendation on the best mulching self propelled push mower? Mainly focusing on mulching capability, but overall capability/ratings second
For the best store bought mower I would get a Honda. Either hrn or HRX. Got a video coming out on this this weekend

Just so its clear, my understanding is they will stop US production, but still make them overseas. If this is correct will they continue to sell the overseas models in North America?
My understanding is that will not. They are off the rest of what is in stock. That may change, but I don’t know.
Just received mine , has a blue dot, worries me maybe the camshaft hasn't been corrected. Update: blue or green dot means it has been corrected.
You’re good to go!👍
Mine also has a blue dot on the box and on the engine, but no punch mark
@@johnwalters878 as far as I know you’re good to go
You’re preaching to a choir member😂.
Awesome chatrkat thanks for sharing this with the community
Didn’t you already have that lawnmower before or is that the same one that you with the blanket?
@@stormyjean-baptiste2196 I still have my Honda hrn216! This is the hrx217!
I just had HD deliver one to me last week (none were in stock locally). Unfortunately the SN is in the range of the recall. Mine doesn't have a green sticker. It has a blue sticker. 🤔
I haven't opened it up to check for the "dimple", because I might just return it if it's part of the recall. I can't seem to find any mention online of a blue sticker being OK.
I bought mine from home depot 2 weeks ago. As far as I know all of the honda mowers home depot is currently selling have already had the recall done. Mine had the green dot, but I also checked the new serial number and it is not part of the recall as it was already fixed. Another tip, the box will look previously opened and retaped, also the flaps will not be glued together on top as it was opened for the recall.
Not sure of any info on the blue dots.

So I thought Honda was discontinuing it's gas push mowers and they actually did a stop sale last September. R they still producing them?
They stopped making them last September and are selling off any remaining repaired mowers after their stop sale last year.
Im looking at buying a horizontal shaft honda engine for a future project. Are any of them affected by any issues?
Nope only the engines mentioned in this video were affected
I just bought one and it looks like there are cracks on the side of the block between oil filler and the muffler. Is this normal from maybe casting?
I have seen that before. It’s normal. As long as you don’t see any leaks you are good.

Thanks
Hey tin not to worry. Those lines are from the mold they were made in. See them on lots of Hondas. You’re all good with that mower!

I want to buy a Rolux powered by Honda
ROCK ON web!
Did you ever do a comparison of gas vs battery mowers?
Yes, please watch videos from last year.
No…….the plastic taps are not broken. The mower is brand new. From day one, the bag has never stayed in place. The steel bag hooks come off those tiny square plastic tabs easily. Poor design for a $600 mower.
Perhaps you could screw a bolt on the top of each mount to better hold the bag on.
