The #19 is what they are famous for. That is the hot pastrami, swiss cheese, cole slaw, on rye with russian dressing. But, all the sandwiches are good.
Langer’s is about the bread. Dismissing the first bite because of the crust is missing THE key element. Langer’s gets its bread mostly baked but puts it in the over for 10 minutes before using which gives it an unbelievable crust with and incredibly soft and chewy inside. It absorbs the fat juices carrying the beef, coriander, garlic, salt, pepper and mustard seed flavor of the pastrami into the bread which enhances the bite. I am an East Coast guy, but Langer’s is totally legitimate and so far is my deli of choice. Pastrami is a very complex item involving curing, smoking and steaming over at least a week of time. Most places have either farmed it out to mass vendors and quality has declined tremendously around the country-particularly NY. The daughter of the owner of Langer’s has opened a boutique called “Daughters” in West Hollywood which has slightly smaller sandwiches but has brought legitimacy to the West side of LA.
Langers makes everything in house. Bread is the best. I go in and don't buy a $22 dollar sandwich if smart like me go in langers order a loaf of bread for $9 @nd a pund of pastrami for $30 and make two or three sandwiches
I also think Brent’s Deli might edge both. RC Provision supplies pastrami to both delis I prefer the deli at Brent’s more. You also need Langers Pastrami with Slaw and some cheese. Katz deli is great too.

We were at NYC, shopping at Supreme, a small retail store where everything is overpriced, not sure why so popular with young kids. It's around the corner to Katz's. You have to try the pastrami sandwich in the reading terminal market at a place called Hershel’s. I’ve had Katz before and for the price and quality I think you’ll slide them above Katz and maybe even first when the price aspect plays into your judgement.
Excellent review UA. To me Langers has the best pastrami sandwich in L.A. I've always wondered who had the best pastrami because I've never had one from Katz. But I agree with you on the Langers bread. I really appreciate your honest review and commentary. I hope these restaurants watch your reviews. It would make them even better places to eat. Keep up the great work! I am looking forward to your next review, my friend.
Is it just me or the size of this Langers Sandwich is smaller than what Im use to. But their Tuna and Cornbeef is also OUT OF THIS WORLD. Both KATZ N Langers are great. One in NY the other in LA. Btw I never like Tuna sandwiches. But when uts good its good.
UA is so biased towards New York places. I get it but I didn’t realize this until these LA videos just how much of an old school east coast guy UA is. he also always should take a bite quickly then give his intro
Believe it or not, if you want another epic pastrami, you need to try Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis. Yes, believe it or not, Indianapolis. Since 1905, it's the real deal and hasn't changed ever.
Glad you visited my home turf! Have tried Langers, but not Katz's. My favorite: Johnnies Pastrami in Culver City, CA. Have to ask for the pickles bag & fries with your order.
I grew up going to Langers. My dad worked at Botica Del Pueblo across the street for 20 years. And let me tell you as a kid as an adult it’s always the most consistent pastrami I ever had. You should’ve tried the number 19 on sourdough trust me. It’s not a nostalgia thing for me. Langers is hands down the best pastrami in the world.
Awesome comparo! I was born and raised in NYC but have lived in LA since 1977. I grew up in Queens so I never went to Katz’s. In LA I haven’t been to Langer’s. I tried on a Sunday and they are closed. I have to try again, really hard. I used the trains, the station is literally across the street. I wonder if Langer’s has an overstuffed version and if so how much more? On your next adventure to Los Angeles (unless you did and haven’t posted yet, another must try is Phillipe’s near Union Station downtown. It’s legendary for the French Dip and that’s what you need to get, the question is how wet to make it? LOL! Also they make their amazing “mustard” on the table. My personal deli favorite is Brent’s Deli in Northridge (need a rental car or friend) on Parthenia. My rec is the Black Pastrami Reuben. OMG. Brent’s also bakes their own rye so yes crusty! But OMG. Great video I’m so hungry now!
Thanks for sharing recs and experiences! Yes I did go to Philippe's on this trip and also Cole's for french dip sandwiches. That vid will be dropping as soon as I'm able

Enjoyed the review. Best Pastrami aka "Jewish Bacon" sandwich is Brent's deli in Northridge or Westlake village. Brent's (Zagat darling) thinly slices Pastrami and stacks it HIGH like Katz's. ( Best Italian deli's thinly slice as well). Langer's & Katz's are behind Brent's (for bi-coastal people in the know haha) Was at a Shabbat service in Henderson, NV earlier this year - met a couple that tried to get Brent's to come to Vegas. It's LA! Although they might do a good business strictly Kosher, the vast majority of people in California have their roots in the vast Mayonnaise and Ranch Dressing Ocean called the Midwest. It would be hard to put together a lunch crew from work or a customer's and go to a place that didn't put Swiss cheese or creme cheese or WHATEVER on a plate with Wonder Bread (see Einstein's Bagels) and call it the Fresno Special. Lunch is only the "mid-day tide me over" except for the Northeast, and the right tiny part of LA, San Diego, Palo Alto and San Francisco. For those of us with a more vigorous background, Luch is for Pastrami, Corned Beef, Chopped liver OR Capicola, Salumi, Parm Reg. OR Maybe a grilled Snapper, Yellow tail or Ahi Burger. All the rest about the WEST is the Best. But, my Mighty Maker, I miss the food! I can cook well, but even the ingredients are hard to get. And except for 3 or 4 Bakeries in San Diego, LA--Fairfax District, San Francisco and Seattle--the bread is catastrophically bad!
Depends on how the pastrami is prepared and/or machine sliced or pot cooked. Johnnie's Pastrami 4017 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City (corner of Sepulveda and Washington...Titos Tacos is there too for another must visit eatery. ) For French dipped roast beef sandwiches, there's Philippes in Chinatown (Ord and Alameda) and Cole's in downtown 118 E. 6th St (it's downstairs is accessed from the street. OG Railroad building. ) I never tried their Pastrami, but these 2 have been arguing over who was the first to invent the French dip and many like their other sandwich offerings.
It;s not just the pastrami, you have to consider the rye bread and type of mustard they offer as well as he quality of the pickles. Mushy old pickles can be a 'deal breaker' lol
Please don’t take too much Pepcid. Over time pepcid can cause other problems. You might want to try bile salts which help digest heavier foods. There are many videos on RUclips on this. Nice job on your videos UA!
I’m an LA native. Katz is pretty bomb, haven’t been to Langer’s, but will be going soon. Johnny’s Pastrami in Culver City is my fave, but it’s not the traditional pastrami on rye. It’s thin sliced on a french roll. Their spicy mustard and pickles are to die for and perfectly compliment the sandwich. Honorable mention goes to the Hat.
I like Johnnies and The Hat’s pastrami sandwiches a lot too but I would argue they are their own things that are like Phillippes’ using thin shaved pastrami and not traditional Jewish deli pastrami sandwiches
Nice review. Im an LA native and Langers is the gold standard by far of Pastrami in Los angeles. I also recommend Wexlers in Santa Monica CA & LA Downtown market district. As well as Johnny's Pastrami on West Adams for LA Runners up if you cant get to Langers. If im ever on New York I will Definitely heading to Katz first thing and Ill bet i wont be disappointed. Either way East coast or West coast in the Pastrami wars got you covered.
Langer's #19 is the greatest sandwich I've ever had. I tried Wexler's, and it was awful. Pastrami was gristly and did not taste anywhere near as good, bread fell apart. Tried Johnny's in Culver City. It was merely ok.
I didn't think you'd actually do it! I grew up in NYC, and lived/worked there in my 20's. I still have family there. You got it right though. Langers has better bread, and if you just tell them to put in some extra meat (upcharge) they will do it, and then it's definitely better than Katz's. I still love and enjoy Katz's everytime i go back, but I give the edge to Langer's because it's more tender and the bread puts it over the top.
You're a real cool fella' ! The crew over here greatly appreciates your unique ability to describe your various dining experiences. Truly a great pleasure to watch and listen. BTW - If possible try and go easy on that PEPSID regimen as that OTC pharmaceutical is quite caustic after consistent long term ingestion. Many Thanks Yo ! 🔥 ❤️ 🔥. 🔚
Katz's hands down. But just so you know a couple of guys that used to work at Katz's opened a place in Garfield New Jersey called pastrami Grill & Bistro and they do a pretty good job. At least last time I tried it. And bear in mind that each cut of meat is different and that it can't come out identical every time.
I've tried Katz and its phenomenal! Seriously, its so good, I love it so much, and I grew up on Langers, but I give Langers a slight edge. But in reality its probably a Tie! They both give high quality and NY and LA are simple the Best hands down... Both are 5 Star dimes❤❤ I love that NY and LA drive eachother to be the best! Great people on the East and Great people on the West...America 🇺🇸 ❤
I go to Langers every once in a while when I’m in LA, I get mine with Russian dressing coleslaw and Swiss . Amazing. Downside is that Langers is in the hood of downtown LA
Langer's Deli is clearly the winner to me as you have same Pastrami Sandwich served there as at Katz but the Katz Deli has no of the other condiments that make their Pastrami fresher like avocado or tomato that define Langer's and make it to typically LA's best Deli.
Langer’s gets their pastrami from RC Provisions in Burbank, who supplies several other places in SoCal. The Oinkster in Eagle Rock (NE Los Angeles) cures their own pastrami and deserves to be in the discussion
What? Katz's makes its own pastrami. I read up on it, and they don't have the space to smoke it so they send it out to a subcontractor to do the smoking. RC Provisions supplies Langer's.
I still got to make it to New York to try Katz's. Been meaning to go forever. Langer's is amazing and in order to do a fair comparison he didn't even order the best sandwich. The #19 which has their homemade Russian dressing, vinegar based coleslaw, and Swiss. Expect no substitutes.
I walked into Langer's today, and got the shock of my life. Its wasn't the food that shocked me, it was the racist hispanic waitresses. Im 6'4" tall 260lbs. Im not hard to miss. I stood waiting to be seated, and was totally ignored, not to mention, i was the only Black patron waiting for service. Ahead of me waiting for a table was a white couple with a twins in a stroller asking for accommodations . still waiting after them, came two white males needi g to pay their bill, whom i must say were readily serviced. Keep in mind 2 cashiers were at the register, and 2 waitresses were conducting the floor. Still i patiently waited ( No Service ). A party of 5 walked in and was immediately asked if they needed to be seated, as if i was not standing there. I was on my lunch break, and was smartly dressed in my City Of Los Angeles attire. Being ignored, and shown exactly how immigrants are taught to ignore Black people and cater to other races, proves that systematic racism is learned, and taught behavior. I would like the owner of Langers to respond to this, and not erase the cctv video tape, to prove my claim as valid.
He was trying his hardest to give the edge to Katz as an east coast guy but in the end , he did the right thing. Respect.
The right thing was not to jump on the Langer's bandwagon when it was clearly inferior.

It's dabomb not gonna lie
@uaeats I get the Corned Beef with Swiss. Cole slaw. And Russian on the side. But that's just me. Have a great day UA
Great review! I am so jealous, I have always wanted to try Langer's to see how it compares to Katz's!
Agree the corned beef is better than pastrami to me
I'll need to try their corned beef next time!
Hi, will you go to Musso and Frank to try their Fettuccine Alfredo or other resraurants?
I have one more LA vid coming, Philippe's and Cole's for french dip sandwiches
How did you not order the number 19?
UA is so biased towards New York places. I get it but I didn’t realize this until these LA videos just how much of an old school east coast guy UA is. he also always should take a bite quickly then give his intro
Great video UA! I like the Michelin Guide recommendation! If I'm not mistaken they are using the Michelin tire logo mascot! How Bizarre is that!
Believe it or not, if you want another epic pastrami, you need to try Shapiro's Deli in Indianapolis. Yes, believe it or not, Indianapolis. Since 1905, it's the real deal and hasn't changed ever.
Wow it looks really well reviewed. Yes I'll try it next time I'm in the Midwest!
@@uaeats Get the pastrami Reuben. You'll see God.
Nicely descriptive
Great vid!
Glad you visited my home turf! Have tried Langers, but not Katz's. My favorite: Johnnies Pastrami in Culver City, CA. Have to ask for the pickles bag & fries with your order.
If you're ever in NYC I recommend trying Katz's! It's worth the experience imo. Unless you really really can't stand lines
@@uaeats awesome, the other great debate and all just in LA. I look forward to it.
Great job...much love!
While you’re in LA, you should try Brents deli in the San Fernando Valley not too far from LAX, homemade corned beef and pastrami
You beat me to it I love Brent's hands down Encino here formerly New Jersey I never saw what all the hype was about with Jerry's Deli but they're obviously all gone now just might have to go to brunch this weekend for a pastrami fixed haven't been there in a while❤
I just wrote my rec for Brent’s! LOL The Black Pastrami Reuben is my Krypronite. But Brent’s is only closer to LAX than NJ. The 405! Man the 405! 🤣
I'm not in LA anymore but I'll have to try it next time!
@@uaeats I figured as much. Just some delicious ideas for the next time. I should have added but it was a deli vibe, Killer Shrimp in Marina del Rey. (Near LAX) When you name the frikin’ restaurant after the dish. 🤷🏻♂️
@@johnkovalicky3389 yeah it’s my number one. The only thing that I’ve had that comes close is Shermans in Palm Springs where Sinatra used to hang.
I hope you try out a French Dip from Philippe’s while you're in Los Angeles if you get the chance.
Life long New Yorker and LA has excellent pastrami..no need for conflict just for eating..
Pizza is better in California also. Not so mellow now are you?
@@craigbrowning5196 I don’t think I ever had California pizza..but it’s usually overrated everywhere I’ve been including Italy…😶
@@craigbrowning5196 Una Pizza Napoletana, at 175 Orchard St. - which tied for the title in 2022 and was declared to have the best pizza in the US last June for a third year running - has again been ranked No. 1 globally by 50 Top Pizza this week…NYC..fyi..😂
@@peterrex8191 And?
Enjoyed the review. Best Pastrami aka "Jewish Bacon" sandwich is Brent's deli in Northridge or Westlake village. Brent's (Zagat darling) thinly slices Pastrami and stacks it HIGH like Katz's. ( Best Italian deli's thinly slice as well). Langer's & Katz's are behind Brent's (for bi-coastal people in the know haha)
Was at a Shabbat service in Henderson, NV earlier this year - met a couple that tried to get Brent's to come to Vegas.
Shalom,
Milana & Jeremiah - 2 Mensch crew
The pastrami and Swiss cheese should have been a tip off that Langers isn’t a kosher deli.
It's not a Kosher deli, more like Kosher style
@@cyclopsvision6370 no kidding. Can you read?
Johnnie's Pastrami 4017 Sepulveda Blvd, Culver City (corner of Sepulveda and Washington...Titos Tacos is there too for another must visit eatery. )
For French dipped roast beef sandwiches, there's Philippes in Chinatown (Ord and Alameda) and Cole's in downtown 118 E.
The rye bread at Langers is twice baked, hence the crunchy crust
Gotta check out Langer's when you get a chance! Thanks for the other recs!
The Hat is really good! Haven’t checked out Langers yet but it’s now a must do.
I really like Johnnie's but I find the fat in the meat a bit stringy.
I like Johnnies and The Hat’s pastrami sandwiches a lot too but I would argue they are their own things that are like Phillippes’ using thin shaved pastrami and not traditional Jewish deli pastrami sandwiches
Johnnies and the Hat are not Jewish style Pastrami. Both are great, by completely different.
Awesome review.
I suggest you try the pastrami at Famous 4th St. Deli or Hershel's East Side Deli in Philadelphia.
You will need to come to Montreal and have our version of Pastrami, aka smoke meat. We have arguably the best place here called Schwartz
You gotta get the #19 at Langers!
Another amazing video!! I love your reviews! You should try Schwartz's Montreal smoked meat. Another iconic Jewish deli sandwich.
Seems your in a better mood. Great review/content .
Yep, sorry about the negative attitude last time!
The pastrami to bread ratio is higher at Katz , gets my vote. 🥩🍞
Its not about the quantity is about the quality.
Katz's used to give a lot more meat, for less...I still love them though
At my age, I go for quality than quantity
You're a real cool fella' ! The crew over here greatly appreciates your unique ability to describe your various dining experiences. Truly a great pleasure to watch and listen. BTW - If possible try and go easy on that PEPSID regimen as that OTC pharmaceutical is quite caustic after consistent long term ingestion. Many Thanks Yo ! 🔥 ❤️ 🔥. 🔚
Glad you all liked the vid!
The contest needed to be between Harold's in Edison and Langer's.
I'll have to try it soon! I hear Newark also has a pretty well regarded spot
Definitely need to check this place out as I live in Bergen County.
So you've been to both? Why do you think Katz's is better?
But a tender texture is a tender texture. I usually always go for it.
Thanks for that tip I lived in Woodbridge for years & I intend to check out this spot in Garfield when I get back to NJ
WOA WOA WOA HOLD THE PHONE
did not expect that west coast winning that one
I've tried Katz and its phenomenal! Seriously, its so good, I love it so much, and I grew up on Langers, but I give Langers a slight edge. But in reality its probably a Tie! They both give high quality and NY and LA are simple the Best hands down... Both are 5 Star dimes❤❤ I love that NY and LA drive eachother to be the best! Great people on the East and Great people on the West...America 🇺🇸 ❤
Years ago the great Huell Howser visited Langers - great conversation with the owner. Find on youtube.
You beed to try The Hat and Douglas Burger for their pastrami in Southern California!
Thanks I'm going to check it out soon!!
I go to Langers every once in a while when I’m in LA, I get mine with Russian dressing coleslaw and Swiss . Amazing.
Downside is that Langers is in the hood of downtown LA
that is a reuben, not the famous #19
Langers is in Culver City as I remember, not downtown Los Angeles. Maybe they have two places. Culver City is a nice area. 😊
@@Gene-dm6pm nope. 704 S Alvarado LA. Couldn’t be more in the hood
Yum...😊
Langer's pricing @ $22 is incredible compared to $29 at Katz. Will try next time were in LA
Langer's Deli is clearly the winner to me as you have same Pastrami Sandwich served there as at Katz but the Katz Deli has no of the other condiments that make their Pastrami fresher like avocado or tomato that define Langer's and make it to typically LA's best Deli.
Any idea what they do with the slices that they slice off and drop under the counter at Katz's?
Langer’s gets their pastrami from
RC Provisions in Burbank, who supplies several other places in SoCal.
The Oinkster in Eagle Rock
(NE Los Angeles) cures their own pastrami and deserves to be in the discussion
What? Katz's makes its own pastrami. I read up on it, and they don't have the space to smoke it so they send it out to a subcontractor to do the smoking.
RC Provisions supplies Langer's.
@ Sorry. You are correct
@@jonasaras
Wasn't that hard to figure out. But apparently some customers of RC Provisions are in NYC.
I've tried both. No doubt in my mind! Langer's for sure!
Check out Harolds NY deli in Edison, NJ
Langer's is so damn good. I've only had it one time but I always think about it lmao
It's very tasty!
