Is Sarge's Deli The BEST PASTRAMI in NYC? Better Than Katz's?

  • Sarge’s Delicatessen & Diner is a place that is frequently mentioned among the best pastrami sandwiches in NYC. Alongside Pastrami Queen, 2nd Ave Deli, Frankel's, and of course, the gold standard, Katz's Deli, it is up there with the best. But unlike Katz's Deli, it does not have the fame and the tourist attraction. Sarge's Deli is regarded as more of a local spot and a neighborhood gem.
Founded in 1964, Sarge's Deli in NYC is still one of the oldest Jewish delis in NYC just without the mainstream acclaim. Many people, particularly local New Yorkers, hail it as the best pastrami sandwich on rye in New York City. But is it really the best? Or do they just have nostalgia for it as a neighborhood spot, and are they just being contrarian due to their disdain for Katz's Deli as a tourist spot? Today, we head on over to Sarge's to find out if it truly is the best pastrami in NYC and the best Jewish deli in NYC, or if Katz's Deli is still the best pastrami in town.

@@JP-jn2yx Having lived in the Midwest, the West Coast, the East Coast and now the South, one thing I will say is that there is a noticeable difference when you drive. Yes, people drive really fast in the South, have big trucks, and you always get someone who swerves around everyone drive way too fast. However, the thing I noticed is that when I turn the turn signal to change lanes, even in heavy traffic, I have had more people open the lane for me in the South than any other region I have lived. People will also be patient to not honk their horn at every situation (such as if someone has a delay when turning left). The West Coast was the worst experience for me in that when I turned on my turn signal, people in that lane, even if they are far behind will quickly speed up to prevent you from getting in.
People often say that the real persona comes out when they drive and if so, the South so far have given me the best experience.

I used to work in the area near Sarge's on the night shift and 5 nights a week after work I'd go and eat at Sarge's Deli. I'd say between 1979 and 1983 that I've eaten at Sarge's Deli a thousand times. To me the pastrami and corned beef sandwiches at Sarges are as good as or sometimes better than Katz's Deli. Katz's Corned Beef if not flavorful enough, and even pale in flavor and dry too. The Pastrami at Katz's is fantastic but sometimes too greasy. To me for the best Deli in NY City I always go to Sarge's Deli and they deliver too. The thing about Sarge's Matzo Ball soup is they expect you to salt and pepper to your taste at the table. You can request for thick sliced Pastrami at Sarge's and I always ask at Sarge's for the sandwich NOT to be lean and to leave all the fat witch is where the flavor is!!! Not kidding. I really enjoy your videos and just saw you for the first time tonight.

I think the waitresses work specific tables and work on primarily tips. I can understand her frustration but she could have handled it better by at the very least explaining the reasoning instead of showing an attitude. Yes, the cop looks like Joe Pesci in Home Alone. The one thing I really dislike about Katz is you have to hunt for an empty seat. Looks like Sarge's you do not have that issue. Thank you for listening to your viewers and trying this place out. Much appreciated your honest review.

Hi UA! I thought a gruff wait staff was a NY thing? LOL. When I grew up up in Queens, mostly, it was the local places. They rocked, some were better than others but and deli in a storm. I’m in L.A. now, since 1977 and I am embarrassed to say I’ve yet to go to Langer’s. I tried but it was a Sunday and they were closed! A Jewish deli closed on Sunday?!? Sacrilege! So my favorite and it’s s drive for me, I probably said it before, Brent’s Deli in Northridge. I’d recommend other than a straight up pastrami on rye, as you need to test the basic for consistency. The make their own rye. The rest are bagged local brand breads. Their sign are is The Black Pastrami Reuben. It used to be in a box on the menu but they added a corned beef and turkey variant so it’s just a list of three, now. My favorite soup is their beef and cabbage it’s a Russian style sweet and sour but not too sweet. Their sides are good, no particular favorites. Lemon bar for dessert. Bring a friend and split when you next visit L.A. or a meet and greet. Great video as always, I just finished dinner and I’m hungry.

Whenever I’m in LA I always visit LA I try to visit Langers and order the number 13 . No other Deli makes a rye bread like Langers especially the outer crust and the Pastrami is tops . As far as Katz’s I’ve been going there for over 50 years as well as Russ & Daughters ETC . Katz’s used to be super consistent however the last time I went into NY was born and bred there but spend most of my time in Fort Lauderdale now really miss good deli there really isn’t any down here or decent bagels . Back to Katz’s was going to get a super appetizing Sunday Morning breakfast with my favorite nephew and even though if I don’t want to wait on line they all know me but that Sunday morning the lines at Russ & Daughters were insane and I didn’t want to cut the lines even legitimately because the crowds would have beat us to death before getting to the door . So I said to my nephew it’s 10:00 practically let’s go to Katz’s which was as usual that early super quiet we ordered Pastrami Sandwiches , Cole Slaw , Hot Dogs the usual stuff we order . It was the first time I was seriously disappointed the Pastrami was dried out like to me I’m not eating Katz’s pastrami unless it melts in my mouth let’s just put it this way it was very disappointing asked for to go boxes packed everything up left gave the leftovers to a homeless man out front and I don’t have to tell you it wasn’t cheap . We went back to Russ & Daughters waited online outside a little till we were by the door and Miriam saw me and winked with a finger bent to come over to her gave her our order and an order to take home for later everything was super delicious as usual . I can’t blame Katz’s I think it’s a mistake to go there that early in the morning especially on a weekend they were probably getting rid of the day before oversteamed then resteamed pastrami or whatever Katz’s is best when it’s super busy already and running smoothly like from 1:00PM during the week when there’s tons of regulars and tourists and the meats are just right . Little fact actually big fact owner of Pastrami Queen in Manhattan years before worked for the famous Pastrami King on Queens BLVD near Union Turnpike that’s were he learned how to pickle and brine and smoke the Navels and Plates best cuts of the animal for pastrami Brisket is best for Corned Beef . But my top 2 are Langers & Katz’s .

@@NoahEats Allan Sherman was using the melody from the song that Robert Burns used for his poem, "Comin' Thro' the Rye."
Of course, Burns was talking about rye fields--the grain--and Sherman was talking about pastrami spilling out from between two slices of (rye) bread.

most places have waiters that cover certain sections. it's more convenient for waiters to group people together, makes servicing easier. but that girl's attitude was unwarranted, especially since you weren't being combative and just asking questions. order takeout next time, cuz that's just bad service
