You needed some Jewish deli mustard on the sandwich, and some pickles, and coleslaw on the side. I have not been in Katz's in 30 years. But back then you got complimentary (free) pickles put on your table. No way have I have eaten pastrami without mustard.
personal taste... I was there last 10 years ago. I need a fork and knife for the pastrami sandwich a pickle for me is nice years ago in Woodmere, LI i went to a grocery store with a thirty gallon wooden barrel with pickles.... old school.... last I seen a video somewhere Katz has great hot dogs when I go back to NYC love to add that to my list.. my taste is hot dog and mustard on a bun nothing else.
As Second Avenue Deli is actually kosher, not just kosher style, I am reminded of an old joke. A group of Jews goes to a Jewish delicatessen and the waiter, a Chinese, takes their order in fluent Yiddish. Later, the owner is making his rounds and comes to this table. He asked them how was their meal. They all proclaim, "Wonderful but just one thing; how did you get a Chinese waiter who speaks fluent Yiddish?"' "Shh", exclaims the owner, trying to silence them. "He thinks we are teaching him English!"
As someone who grew up in Brooklyn NY, I was spoiled with riches for all the Jewish delis there were at the time (late 70s into the 80s and 90s) which includes in NYC itself. Brooklyn had some amazing Jewish delis back then which I still say were better than Katz's or 2nd Ave. but I digress. I've had the pleasure of eating at all these places before though, and 2nd Ave. is the only place to me that comes close to Katz's overall. First off as you found out yourself UA, the matzo ball soup at 2nd Ave. is top tier and better than almost any other place in the 5 boroughs. Now as for the pastrami. I am of the opinion that nothing beats Katz's still to this day (though it's been a good 18 years since I've eaten at any of these places now) but 2nd Ave. is the closest they come. Piping hot pastrami, cut super thin. Amazing bark and fat streaks in every piece. Terrific bread (though the bread does look different these days, still looks good though) and mustard. THOSE PRICES THOUGH, HOLY COW. (literally) I know NY isn't cheap, but near $30 for a pastrami sandwich is crazy. Katz's at least gives you near a LB of food in every sandwich, and while 2nd Ave. gives you plenty also, not sure it's worth the prices at either place. Either way, I'm glad these places still exist since they are a dying breed of restaurant and an essential part of New York City. I'm glad you do these videos UA to show people all of this great food. Oh and sorry for the giant block of text :D
I’m glad I’m not the only one that was STUNNED by the prices. I’m up in Canada and doing the conversion that $40 for a sandwich. Scandalous. Great comments sir!!!!
Was I the only person who was frustrated that he took his time to bite into the sandwich after complaining the other pastrami pieces had gone cold? Eat it already!
I've now seen several of your steak videos and a few of your sandwich ones, especially as it comes to pastrami and you've become a favorite for me UA. You make very relatable videos, you have a good easy and likeable presence and you do an excellent job describing aspects of your experience, ambiance, flavor, service, tenderness v flavor of the meat, etc. and price, as it would be important to viewers. Well done.
I have not been back to NYC in over twenty years, but is that the original deli on 2nd. I lived around the corner from Carnegie Deli, but would always take a taxi down to 2nd Ave, when Abe was still around, and I was very happy with them as well as Katz’s. I usually order the lean corned beef, but pastrami has to have the fatty tenderness and flavor. Great posting.
Been watching your videos for a while now, and your food commentary has gotten better and better over time, very well spoken, along with an edge of humor. Love pastrami. I also like the 4K video quality as well. Certainly a challenge to eat with one hand and a camera in the other. Next, prime rib at Smith & Wollensky? Basic burger at Joe Junior? Peking Duck in Chinatown? Looking forward to the next video!
to be honest, if I was a chef him in my place said that I'd get the knife out and kill myself... ha ha that's his kiss of death. buy I agree when he says to my taste, so if he is at a place I have been and dislikes something I love, all is good I Respect him. also love the places he goes where I have never been. I make a new list. Logistics I am 70 moved from Long Island 5 years ago. Use to LIRR from LI every weekend and walk around and go to so many great food places as Keene's, Oyster Bar, Old Homestead, Vincent's etc
I love your videos and your honest assesments. Sometimes, I feel like I'm there enjoying a plate with you. Keep going. Great reviews. Great ideas for places.
I keep watching all his videos! Great content nonstop! I like him mixing it up with places like Sbarro, taking a chance on those old chain restaurants.
Can we all agree UA has a totally unique sense of humor??,......I find myself laughing thru most of his videos (and I mean that in a complimentary way).
DAYUM that looks impressive! there is so much to do and eat in NYC! Also your video vlogs quality is getting higher and higher quality! also love your honest reviews!
"Oh wow - that's outstanding" - it sure looks like it! This is one of your more enjoyable videos, and they're all good. I haven't found a near-match for Schwartz in Montreal (we live on the West Coast, and I haven't tried Katz in NYC), but this looks really good. You really get into pastrami and your knowledge, taste buds and food obsessiveness shine through. Thanks UA!
My daughter and I ate at 2nd avenue on our trip to Boston. She had the matzoh ball soup and I the pastrami. Your review was spot on to.our thoughts. As for the prices... When in manhatten!! We also got to park for $10 all day. Love your videos sir! This one of course is our favorite
I tell you - at the video's 11:35 minute mark, when UA says "Now maybe this is a thumbnail picture....", check out the older gentleman over UA's right shoulder ! What timing ! LOL !!! A great video as always - cheers all ! m.
Great video as always! but I think you should try eating some of the food when it's first served and hot. You don't have to say everything before you take your first bite.
Can't believe I never ate there. Sarge's used to be my favorite in NYC, but after seeing how you were treated there I have extra incentive to try 2nd Ave Deli next time I'm in town. Tbh I like the pastrami at Hershel's in Philly better than any I've had in NYC.
Ýou are welcome! Pastrami for breakfast sounds appetizing. At 20:00 my favorite Pastrami Sandwich is in my state and goes on tour at many places icluding concerts now and next year. I hope to invite you for trying as the journey to it is more than worth it. Keep it up UA brilliant video!
Great video, UA. I think I would prefer 2nd Ave. Deli based on the thinner slices. That soup looked awesome, too! I've been to Katz's a few times and loved it, but my next trip for Pastrami will be to 2nd Ave.. Thanks!
As a native New Yorker I can say the OG Katz’s is a tourist trap with crazy long lines. If you have a craving go to their Brooklyn local. There are no lines as it is a small stall. Second Ave is just as good. And kosher if that matters to you. Plus the meat you get for the money at either establishment is worth the money.
Next time, instead of Dr. Browns Cream soda, go with the Dr. Browns "Cel-Ray" tonic. And a bit of history - this 2nd Ave Deli is run by relative's of the original Deli that was on 2nd ave and hence its' name. This 2nd Ave Deli is between Lex and 3rd and they have a second Deli on 1st Ave in the 70's - so it averages out to 2nd ave. The pastrami is a bit lighter when compared to Katz's probably due to a bit less time in the smoker and that would account for it being a bit chewier then Katzs. I'm a 2nd Ave fan - and as Yogi would say about Katz's - No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded!
Usually brisket is cut thicker when the meat is really soft. If the meat has more structure you cut it thinner. Personally I like some chew. I don’t want my beef to be just mush
I went here pretty recently due to food insider i think promoting this on a tour. It was good don't get me wrong but as a tourist out of town still feel like Katz is still better. Excited to see what you think!
UA, here is my list of best Jewish delis: 1. Hershel's (Philly) 2. Pastrami Queen (NYC) 3. 2nd Ave Deli (NYC) 4. Schwartz's (Montreal) 5. Sarge's (NYC)
When I first saw the soup, I said..."That looks like the best looking soup he has ever tried". Never had Matza soup, but this one was looking good enough to try it!
Love your videos brother. But you give me hella anxiety with the amount of time you take to actually taste the food. LOL I’m over here screaming at my phone like “JUST TAKE A BITE YA KILLIN’ ME SMALLS!” LOLOLOL Keep those restaurant reviews coming. I appreciate you.
I'm not a big fan of people going around places and doing food shows like Portnoy does. I did really like this one though. He'$ researched and different. It's an enjoyable watch.
I'm so old that I remember when a Pastrami sandwich was $ 12 ! Yeah, at 2 nd Avenue Deli, Was it that long ago ? (By the way the deli actually used to be on 2 nd Avenue ) A large part of Katz's crowding is because people want to see where When Sally Met Harry was filmed
Thanks UA, missed the stream, content looks great, I saw it was your first 4k. As I'm sure it's been stated, very crisp video, close-ups especially looked amazing. I went full screen on my monitor and it was perfect. I'd say if it takes up to much space and kills you in editing, record the regular review in lower res, but jump to 4k for the close-ups, if that possible. Thank you again!
There’s a place here in Jersey out in Garfield(Bergen County) that makes a damn good hot pastrami. Supposedly 2 of the guys that work there (not sure if they are the owners) used to work at Katz’s. As far as ordering the food at the counter is concerned, they do it the same way as Katz’s, hand cut and even giving you a plate with a free sample of pastrami while you’re waiting. The quality is right on par with Katz’s, but the best part…the sandwich is $15 for the same serving size!
I love your videos. I suggest you look up the history of Matzoh and its relationship to the holiday of Passover. It nothing to do with "white bread". It is "unleavened" bread. Keep them coming!!
I used to live on 3rd Ave just across from Sarge's Deli. Great pastrami, fresh roast turkey, rotisserie chicken, and baby back ribs....yum. They would have all of that on the counter...and of course I'd also get macaroni or potato salad and coleslaw. And a great way of eating pastrami for breakfast is with scrambled eggs.
UA I love your channel so much, but would you consider possibly changing the background song it gets very very redundant after so many reviews.... sorry
This video made me hungry for some Katz deli 😂 great work as always instant click whenever you release video I believe your channel will explode very soon 🎉 keep it up
I ate at 2nd Avenue Deli on my New York trip last year sampling all the delis of New York and for me, this place came in second to Sarge's Deli. They both had thin and juicy sliced Pastrami and corned beef sandwiches and that's the key, anytime you see thin sliced meat it's going to be like that, Katzs' unfortunately is thicker sliced and is actually on the dry side I thought, Sarge's and 2nd Avenue Deli way way better!
i reckon since pastrami is made from brisket, the part you had on the sample plate was part of the flat, en on the sandwich is mixed brisket flat and brisket point (the fatty part of the brisket). @14:27 UA quote of the year xD.
You should use a more discreet camera when filming. Many of these places see you're a content creator and give you special treatment just cause. Yet when casuals go, the experience is very different at most of these places and get treated differently. I'm telling you, the instag-go 3 is the way to go. That thing is amazing.
Best pastrami is a small place on Lexington and 78th --- Pastrami Queen -- east-side of the block and great prices --- forget Katz's NYC natives don't go -- it is an awful tourist trap with prices to match. Anthony Bourdain said Pastrami Queen "is the real deal pastrami sandwich " and 100 percent agree ! Then drop into the Metropolitan Museum of Art (84th and Fifth ) before or after !
For anyone traveling thru Connecticut on I -84 stop at Reins Deli located in Vernon right off the highway and we’ll worth the stop for the food is awesome.
"chewing can be fun..." This will be the first quote that will be included in my book to be called "UA's Aphorisms," projected publication date of July, 2024.
This was the first ever UA Eats 4K video! Took way longer to edit and upload. With just HD I can make content faster, but do you think 4K is worth it?
Doesn't look much different to me to be honest 🤷
I can’t tell the difference watching on my phone lol
The close ups are sharper but probably not worth it.
I definitely see the difference on my iPad. But not really worth extra time. It is the content that counts.
Camara quality matters more, than just higher resolution in itself..
You needed some Jewish deli mustard on the sandwich, and some pickles, and coleslaw on the side. I have not been in Katz's in 30 years. But back then you got complimentary (free) pickles put on your table. No way have I have eaten pastrami without mustard.

I think 2nd ave is way better than Katz. One of favorites. Sarges make a great sandwich but 2nd ave is better overall.

Thanks for the review today. I think I am gonna head there for dinner tomorrow. I went there years ago but I don't think I had their Pastrami then.

You didn't ask but you get free cole slaw and pickles at 2nd Ave deli. You didn't ask and surprised they didn't give it to you with the sandwich.

In the 70s I said 2nd ave was too lean and not that tender. Half century later the same opinion. This guy’s reviews are spot on.

I like the thin cut. Looks good. Wondering how much meat is on there.... Guessing 1/2 pound. How was the bread?
On some of those sandwiches “chicken fat” was listed as a component? Anyone care to share? I’ve never seen that before.
i reckon since pastrami is made from brisket, the part you had on the sample plate was part of the flat, en on the sandwich is mixed brisket flat and brisket point (the fatty part of the brisket). @14:27 UA quote of the year xD.
Same video but definitely not worth the up sale..... Who cares about the video quality.... Food quality is the most important criteria
Another great review!! I am in total agreement of your thoughts.

Your cookie segment reminded me of Seinfeld.
Another great video U.A.! You should check out Hobby's Deli in Newark next time. It'll be worth your trip.
I saw a half sandwich and soup on the menu. I might give that a try. Im visiting next year! definitely going to try Katz as well!
I would love to try what the guy behind the counter was trying at 11.33. Besides that love the review bud.
What’s up UA love the videos!
That service was crazy!
I'm probably the only vegan watching this channel 🙈
