Thank you for visiting Jaffna! Just a few facts about Sri Lankan Tamils: 1. Sri Lankan Tamils (also called Ceylonese Tamils or Eelam Tamils) are native to Sri Lanka for thousands of years. They are not Indian, even though they share a common language (Tamil but a different dialect) and certain cultural similarities with South India (due to geographical proximities). Genetically, SL Tamils are basically the same people as Sinhalese - a genetic study was conducted a few years ago. 2. You can find Indian Tamils (or Hill Tamils) in the central part of Sri Lanka. They were brought by Britishers during colonial era. They are different from native Sri Lankan Tamils.
3. Sri Lankan Tamils are Hindu, but you can also find important Christian and Atheist minorities. A lot of Sri Lankan Maures are also Tamils who converted to Islam. 4. Sri Lankan Tamils are NOT from South India. The same as Sinhalese are not from North India. Some of sinhalese ancestors are from North India though. But it's like saying "Europeans are from Africa" because their ancestors are from Africa.
5. Another fact, a lot of Sri Lankan dishes are in fact Tamil such as Idiyappam (string hoppers), Appam (hoppers), Kottu Roti, Dosai, Idli, Puttu, etc. 6. Sri Lankan Tamil food is different from Indian food. You can find similar spices and ingredients used in South Indian cuisine but it is different. Most of the dishes are vegan and vegetarian friendly. SL Tamils food is also known for its seafood based dishes (crab, shrimp, etc.).
7. Northern Province is less developed than the rest of the country because of Sri Lanka politicians, civil war and poor investment from the government. The region was one of the most developed and educated at one point before war...
Good information. Eelam tamils are genetically close to sinhalese are genetically close to indian tamils we mostly share the same genetics because same land Eelam island and Indian subcontinent were merged when tamils formed in both lands

You guys are the cutest vlogger couple I have seen here on RUclips. I am truly impressed by how beautifully you two portrayed my country with such fondness and respect. Thank you for visiting. Please don’t mind most of the comments on this video. Some people still live with outdated beliefs, being overly obsessed with things like culture and religion. While culture is important and a heritage for everyone, being excessively attached to it can be very tribal. Sri Lanka still has a small minority of people like this (both Sinhala and Tamil communities). But majoruty are not like this now Best wishes from Sri Lanka.
Thank you for visiting Tamil area of Sri Lanka. While you got many historical facts wrong we are still appreciative as tourists try and steer clear of this area. Nice video , FYI tamils from North of srilanka are not from India don't be confused don't give false informations just because we share same culture, food... we are originally from srilanka, Tamils from Kandy are Indians brought by British for work. 😊
How come you speak the same language then? The northern tamils did migrate arounf the 12th century with south Indian invasions and also for tobacco plantations during the dutch period.
@@tamarind1459 just because we speak the same language we are coming from India that some stewpid interpretation , you are misunderstanding with kandy tea plantation tamils , did you check your history book where you ppl come from ?
First, learn the historical background. In central Sri Lanka, places like Kandy are inhabited by Indian Tamils. On the other hand, the North and East Tamils are the original indigenous people influenced by South Indian cultures due to invasions by Tamil dynasties like the Chola and Pandya, followed by European colonizers such as the Portuguese, Dutch, and British. The Sinhalese, originally from North India, also came and settled after Prince Vijaya's arrival. Over time, they intermixed with the original Vedda inhabitants, becoming natives. The key takeaway is that Sinhalese and Tamils from the North and East share a common genetic heritage, shaped by Indian invasions and cultural blending. Historically, we coexisted peacefully, each community ruled by separate linguistic kingdoms. However, British colonialism united these regions for administrative purposes, leading to a power shift to the Sinhalese upon their departure. Unfortunately, this change resulted in discrimination against Tamils, including the takeover of government positions, destruction of Tamil businesses, and violence against educated Tamils during the 1950s riots organized by Buddhist extremists. Despite peaceful demonstrations for Tamil rights and freedom, we faced racial discrimination by some extremist Buddhists. It was in the 1980s that the Tamil Tigers took up arms in their fight for freedom, shaping the course of history from that point onwards.
@@eshikaudayanawanigasekarado you understand tamil in the first place. Jaffna tamil is different because there were malayalees who migrated from Kerala to Jaffna.
Tamils of Sri Lanka are of two types 1. The native tamils who have inhibited the island since the tribal era 2. The indian tamils who have been in the central srilankan areas for more than 200 years they are now proper srilankans but the age gap is huge between the natives and them. Another thing id like to mention is though the culture followed here is now influenced by indian culture the native sri lankan tamil culturr is distinct from indian culture. Even the indian srilankan tamils share a distinct dialect a little off from indian tamil Still we consider eachother as srilankan tamils from different origins But tamils are mostly all over srilanka now mainly in the capital and in the tamil homeland. When you mentioned hindu temples they're more like tamil cultural and architectural temples The food of srilankan tamil crusine is distinct from indian crusine It may look similar but its native to the land so instead of mentioning us as indians maybe you should refer to as srilankan tamils or srilankans Other than that i love your visit and documentary thank you for visiting my motherland ❤

Many tourists are hesitant to visit the predominantly Tamil areas in the North and East of the island due to the heavy presence of Sinhala military forces. Military bases are visibly scattered throughout these regions, with an army presence that amounts to one soldier for every five Tamil residents. This military presence has led to incidents of intimidation, forceful disappearances, land seizures by Sinhalese individuals, and reports of sexual violence, all largely attributed to the military forces. The Sri Lankan government has been accused of committing war crimes during the conflict and has shown reluctance to allow UN intervention to investigate these alleged atrocities against innocent Tamils. Furthermore, the government allocates insufficient funds for the development of Tamil areas, resulting in a noticeable disparity in living standards compared to Sinhala-majority regions. As a consequence of these hardships, over three million Tamils fled the country during the civil conflict, many settling in Europe and North America. These diaspora communities often contribute financially through charitable organizations to support the well-being of their fellow Tamils who continue to face discrimination and abuse under the Sri Lankan government.
Most tamil comments are just correcting their historical information errors nothing harm in it. No hesitation needed to visit n jaffna it's peaceful and respectful
If you do not know how to comment without attacking another community, do not comment on this. Tamil people are starting the true historical fact. Your Mahavamsa story says Singhala people born from lion, what an idiotic history is that.

Tamils have NOT come from south India! Historically Sinhalese came from north India. If you have noticed Tamil Nadu, South India, and Sri Lanka are a continuous land separated by a very narrow sea. Tamils lived in SriLanka all the time, long before Sinhalese came here British when they came brought hand ful of Tamils from south India for tea estates which is what you are referring to!
hi, i found that you have explained about the Civil War but it's entirely wrong information. there was not a civil war but a war with the tererist. Please correct it in your next video. thanks
Absolutely not, what kind of bullsh*t is that? It's like saying Indians are from various parts of Africa because their ancestors came from Africa a long time ago. Yes Sri Lankans ancestors (Tamil and Sinhalese) came through what is today called India but they are not from India or Indian. That's a st*pid statement.
How come even the so-called Sinhalese food is a carbon copy or slight variation of the traditional food from Kerala which was Tamil a few centuries ago and southern Tamil Nadu? Can you also explain this? Teh reason is most of the present day Sinhalese are descended from South Indian immigrants from Kerala ( Tamil Chera Nadu and modern Tamil Nadu. You can scream howl and deny but this is the truth. Go and check your DNA . The closest relatives to the Sinhalese are the Sri Lankan Tamils and they are all closely related to the population of South India and not to north Indians or another people and this includes the Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors. @@tamarind1459
It would be great to do some research about people and place before visiting. Tamils in North and East of SL were the first resident and they were not brought by British... To be honest by making Ceylon as 1 country, British colonial made a big mistake. We were occupied by Portuguese and Dutch but no one messed up with our history but when British came that's it... Please do some research 🤯

We never said they were brought by the British. I would never have assumed that they were brought by the British. South India and Sri Lanka are incredibly close... people move around. And I thought the Vedda people were typically recognized as the first residents of Sri Lanka.
@@waysoftheworld_well said. It is obvious the northern people share similar culture with south india..if you look at history there wer invaders like Kalingha magha who invaded Sri Lanka and moved the Sinhalese kingdom from the north to the south. After that the aryachakrawarthis from south india made a regional kingdom in Jaffna. Even today there are buddhist temples been found from the earth in northern province which belongs to the Anuradhapura period. Tha tamil culture became dominant there after the 12 th century. The nallur kovil was also built by Prince Sapumal from the south when the country was last unified in the Kotte period just before the Portuguese invaded the coastal areas. It is sad to see people don't like to accept the truth. If tamils were the first people the dominant language would have been tamil. But the Sinhala kingdom has existed for more than 2500 years hence the tamils from south india could not colonise the whole island. There cannot be two homelands for one language.

@@waysoftheworld_ Sri Lankan or Eelam Tamils are largely descended from the indigenous Dravidian Naga who migrated from South India, when there was a land bridge during ancient prehistoric times and spoke a form of Semi or Proto Tamil dialect called Elu(hence Eezham). The Naga largely occupied the northeast and northwestern coasts and were generally the elite and traded a lot with the ancient world. Around 3000 years ago they gradually assimilated into the proper Tamil culture and adopted proper Tamil and not the semi/proto-Tamil dialect they used to speak as their mother tongue. They had always been Saivite but when Buddhism arrived lots of them converted to Buddhism but 10AD reconverted back to their ancestral Saivite Hindu faith. The ancient Buddhist sites found i on the north and east of the island are Tamil Buddhist sites, even the one that you showed and not Sinhalese, as they now falsely claim. Sri Lankan Tamils closest relatives are not the South Indian Tamils but the Sinhalese with whom they had shared the island for thousands of years and like the Sinhalese they share a 30% Western Asian DNA and South Indian Tamil DNA that came with invasions and immigration, but they are predominantly of descended from the prehistoric Dravidian Nagas. The Tamil they speak is very archaic and very conservative and is very different to the South Indian Tamil dialect due to their long isolation. It is much closer to classical Tamil and shares a lot of vocabulary with Malayalam ( Kerala) a language that is largely derived from middle Tamil and the Sri Lankan Tamil culture and cuisine is very similar to Kerala than to Tamil Nadu. Food that you showed on the video is more South Indian Tamil than typical Sri Lankan Tamil food. The Sinhalese are largely descended from the Dravidian Semi/Proto Tamil speaking Yakka who are closely related to the Naga and arrived with them from ancient South India during prehistoric times. The Yakka largely populated the southern western and central parts of the island and were more boorish and peasant like, unlike the more Naga who were more sophisticated elite and outward looking towards the world and traded extensively with them. Despite both people being closely related. There was some North Indian immigration to the island from the Northwest parts of India and they introduced the Prakrit language. However, they never created the Sinhalese. They came settled and got assimilated into local Naga and Yakka tribes. This is the reason the Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils have a high percentage (30%) of R1 male DNA markers (Indication of male Aryan steppe Eastern European/Cental Asian ancestry) and western Asian genes. It was the arrival of Buddhism around 2300 years ago from India and the large scale or mass conversion of the native Dravidian Semi Tamil Yakka tribes down the south of the island that created the Sinhalese people, language and identity in the south of the island. The Yakka converted from Saivite Hinduism to Buddhism on a mass scale and gradually over the centuries started to mix their local Tamil dialect with the Pali and Prakrit of Buddhism to create a new language and identity called Sinhalese ( from the ancient Tamil word for the island Chingkallam meaning the red or copper land) by 7AD. In the Naga predomination Northeast and northwest coast of the island a significant number also converted to Buddhism but most remained Hindu and in these Naga predominating areas the ancient Tamil language, culture and identity survived, even though a large number of them also converted to Buddhism too. The close proximity of their areas to ancient Tamil South India and they are being the elite and outward looking may have saved the ancient classical Tamil language, the only surviving ancient classical language in the world now, in these areas. However, by 10AD after the invasion of Raja Raja Cholan from South India Buddhism vanished in the Tamil areas of the island and these ancient Tamil Buddhists reconverted back to Hinduism like the rest of India. Raja Raja Cholas also settled thousands of Chola Tamils in the Sri Lankan Tamil areas to ensure and safeguard the Hindu Tamil culture prevailed, however they only made a small contribution to the native Sri Lankan Tamil's genetic makeup , however contributed more to the culture. Infact it is not the native Sri Lankan Tamils but most of the modern Sinhalese who are largely descended from South Indian Tamil invaders and immigrants who remained and got assimilated. Most of the so called Sinhalese kings and aristocrats from ancient times are of South Indian Tamil ancestry and addition to this, they imported thousands of Tamil soldiers and craftsmen from south India. During the Portuguese and Dutch colonial rule they imported hundreds of thousands of low caste Tamil indentured labour from then Tamil Kerala and modern Tamil Nadu to do menial service work and to work as indentured slave labour in the huge southern spice estates, just like the way the British imported South Indian Tamil labour 200 years ago and settled them in the central highlands to work in the tea estates. These people over the centuries gradually got assimilated as Sinhalese Buddhists and Catholics and Created new Sinhalese castes called the Karawa, Salagama, Durawa and many others and they make up 30-50% of the present-day Sinhalese population. The Sinhalese are very quiet about this as they do not like to tell the world the real truth about their actual predominantly Dravidian Tamil origin but want to portray falsely that they are truly indigenous to the island and of North Indian heritage which is a lie and a myth. Just like the imagined Arab origin of the Sri Lankan Muslims. There is hardly any Arab in them but thery are converted Tamil Muslim immigrants from South India and DNA has definitely proved this. It is these lies and deliberate racist myths that has created all these problems in Sri Lanka and wesern tourists and journalists who come here with no real or correct knowledge of the actual history, and too lazy to read or find out, keep on spreading these lies and myths and contribute further to the marginalization and structural genocide and dispossession of the island's native Tamils, who actually have a far older history than the Sinhalese majority. Just like the Celtic Scots and Welsh in Britain. Just because German is spoken in Austria, Germany and Switzerland does not mean they all originated from Germany, these are ancient Germanic tribes that migrated and spread.

Just a few facts about Sri Lankan Tamils:
Eelam tamils are genetically close to sinhalese are genetically close to indian tamils we mostly share the same genetics because same land
Eelam island and Indian subcontinent were merged when tamils formed in both lands
@@Palmman69 Actually Eelam Tamils and Sinhalese are genetically closer to Malayalee from Kerala, which is surprising.

7:41 you're not meant to mix in all the curries with the rice like that. Instead, you take a little bit of rice, then add whatever curries you want into that one small lump, mix it in and eat it. Never mix all the curries in the rice like that - there is no way to distinguish the flavours if you do that :)

But majoruty are not like this now
Best wishes from Sri Lanka.
Thank you for visiting Tamil area of Sri Lanka. While you got many historical facts wrong we are still appreciative as tourists try and steer clear of this area. EELAM not Srikanka
Tamil is the oldest living language under the sun and more than 5000 years old language but Sinhala language only came after 6 AD after they came from India as illegal immigrants to Tamils' oen Island EELAM.
Eelam is the original name of the island 🏝️ and only after 1972 the Sinhala racists run Srikankan regime changed the name as so called Srilanka.
We Tamils R the ORIGINAL inhabitants or the island and Sinhalese were the the immigrants to the island as their Mahavamsa clearly states that.
We have enough PROOF of Tamil Culverts and archeological evidence dated more than 2500 years old unlike the Sinhalese whose SINHALA language itself cooked UP after 6 AD.
if you belive mahawansa ppls who lived before vijaya were tribal and had no civilisation. so if it s tamils they were lived here as uncivilised tribes. btw where bare your archeological evidence. there no any archelogical evidence of a tamil civilisations. so the conclusion if you belive mahawansa, is civilisation was started by sinhalese who took tribal ppls out of the caves, let it be tamil or chinese what ever you call them@@சென்

How come you speak the same language then? The northern tamils did migrate arounf the 12th century with south Indian invasions and also for tobacco plantations during the dutch period.

@@tamarind1459nope wrong jaffna tamils are native to the island
Malayaalam again is tamil dialect
Jaffna Price is high 😮 But foods great.👌👍
Yes, we know prices were quite high - but the food was incredible and the people working there were very kind. So we were happy 😊
Tamils of Sri Lanka are of two types
1. The native tamils who have inhibited the island since the tribal era
Even the indian srilankan tamils share a distinct dialect a little off from indian tamil
Still we consider eachother as srilankan tamils from different origins
But tamils are mostly all over srilanka now mainly in the capital and in the tamil homeland.
When you mentioned hindu temples they're more like tamil cultural and architectural temples
The food of srilankan tamil crusine is distinct from indian crusine
It may look similar but its native to the land so instead of mentioning us as indians maybe you should refer to as srilankan tamils or srilankans
Other than that i love your visit and documentary thank you for visiting my motherland ❤

Sorry for those disrespectful comments from tamil people. Most tourists hesitate to visit jaffna. Btw You guys are amazing vloggers.
It's totally fine. We are so happy we visited :) Thank you ❤️
Many tourists are hesitant to visit the predominantly Tamil areas in the North and East of the island due to the heavy presence of Sinhala military forces.
Okay its a little true some tamils are taking it a little too personal my bad
If you do not know how to comment without attacking another community, do not comment on this. Tamil people are starting the true historical fact. Your Mahavamsa story says Singhala people born from lion, what an idiotic history is that.

@@waysoftheworld_ tamils are some spontaneous beings never a migrated population ..

Tamils are not from South India! Wrong information- Tamils have been in North & East for more than 3000 years. Do you know Tamil is one of the oldest language in the world!
okay thanks. genuine question - where did the Tamils arrive to the North & East Sri Lanka from?
@@waysoftheworld_ Tamils are the origins of Sri Lanka. The whole of Sri Lanka was part of India thousands of years ago . Google about Kumari Kandam and Tamil Civilization , you will learn little bit more about Tamil Civilization.
@@waysoftheworld_exactly if they were separate the language should have evolved to another language different to that of tamil.
@@tamarind1459 You seem to be an extremist Sinhalese Buddhist fanatic trolling along to deliberately give false information, Just because people are separated the language need not change See English is still spoken in many lands separated by sea. SO is French , Arabic and Spanish. Learn your history properly instead of lying. Sinhalese only came into existence from 7Ad a mixture of native Tamil, Pali and Prakrit/Sanskrit. It is not the Eelam Tamils who are largely descended from south Indian Tamils many recent but the present-day Sinhalese. Go and google and learn the history and origin of the Sinhalese Karawa, Salagama , Durawa and many other castes. They make up 30-5-% of the present day Sinhalese and most of the South Indian invaders and immigrants to the island did nto get assimilated into the Sri lankan Tamil identity but into the Sinhalese identity. Please stop misinforming
Mostly I just saw you guys talking. For a report to long with less information. Boring! Sry guys!
Gerald, this is RUclips... free content that people just put out to the world. if there's a video you don't like, just look for another free video among the 10,000 that are out there instead of leaving a pointless comment.
Correction.... Sri lankan Tamils not from India.... they are aborigines of the nothern land. this faults propaganda is spreaded by Sinhalese who originally came from India.... descendent of King Deva nambiya theesan who kicked out by his farther Indian Emperor Ashoka
Thanks for sharing. I hope you know we never meant to offend anyone ✌🏼

EELAM and Tamilnadu were same LAND seceral 1000 yeqrs ago and unfortunately divided by SHALLOW sea called Palk Sea due to Natural Disasters like Tsunami.
EELAM not Srilanka
