When we were in Jaffna in 2016 we really enjoyed it. We were just in time for the big temple festival in the Nallur Kovil which was the most amazing thing we experienced on all our travels. The place was packed with Sri Lankan men in lungis and woman in their best Sarees. Loud drums, chants, buckets full of smoking incense, as effigies were carried through the temple. And at night they were pushing huge chariots around outside. The whole part of the city was closed off for traffic. It was absolutely fantastic. And yes: no cameras, so only memories remain.
I visited Jaffna about 4 years ago and had a wonderful time. I was there during, what I was told, low season: February. The weather was beautiful and i had a great time. I found an old, local guest house and everyday I just wandered around. The food was very good. Whenever I meet people who want to visit India but who are a bit worried about it, then I suggest that they visit Sri Lanka instead. It’s much mellower and not as chaotic.
