Sri Lanka is currently facing an economic crisis so in this vlog, I challenged myself to give back to the locals as much as I can while immersing myself in the rich culture, history, and beauty of this tropical paradise. I explore the local markets like Pettah, where I highballed some of the vendors, I've met and caught up with some of my friends here and I've also experienced a strange encounter with, quite possibly, the Sri Lankan mafia.

@@harryjaggardtravel As a Sinhalese person I would like to politely say that WE DO NOT WANT TO BE RULED BY BRITISH PEOPLE. We did a sh*t ton of work to get liberty and many of our unarmed civilian ancestors were killed by the British in their own home villages. Ain't gonna give it back just because some old Muslim says he's not satisfied. Many Muslims don't care about our liberty anyway since they are recent arrivals and weren't persecuted as much as the Sinhalese. Even the old Muslim man who spoke is visibly having some South East Asian Malay or Java descent ! They were brought here by the British to work for them. Same with the case of one guy saying "England is helping our Tamil people." So I'm not surprised about their views. But we do appreciate tourists coming to the country and being friendly and helping the disenfranchised peoples !

Delighted to have you back. Last time was really enjoyable watching videos from you and your "gang", Ali Machan, Luke and Mac. Won't say there's a mafia here but the dire economic situation in the country is compelling some to resort to acts that may not always be ethical, a seasoned traveller like you could spot such acts "from a mile away". The attractions of Sri Lanka are not foreign to you and during your stay go ahead and enjoy them. It's raining in Colombo, Kandy and the other tourist hot spot. Suggest you try the Eastern Province - Trinco, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay to name a few, there's also Jaffna and it's environs in the Northern province. Look forward to more videos from you, do enjoy your stay in Sri Lanka.

The statue is of Mr SWRD Bandaranayaka, but he is not the first Prime Minister, he was actually the 4th. Mr DS Senanayaka was the 1st PM. if he were a teacher he would probably know. Tout for sure!

I have been working in Hostels in Colombo for a couple of years and this is a really big problem, yeah we can call it Mafia ofc.
Normally they target solo travellers especially female. Sometimes most of these guys are hanging out next to the hotels, hostels and watch you leave the place, then aproach to you in a friendly manner, sometimes they would tell you that they work in the hostel where you stay and he is off today and they can show you arround.
Most of the time the guy followed by a tuktuk, they act like they dont know each other and act like they randomly stops the tuk tuk. But its a part of the game.
If the person is agree to his offer, they would tell you a huge price at the end of the trip, if you dont agree to pay, they tell you or threat you to pay kr go to the police station. Sometimes the guy agree to pay half of the money since they know eachother, even if you pay a half of the price, its a lot.
So, I will mention a couple of stuff to be aware of in Colombo.
-No special Buddhists ceromony or festival, its one of the famouse scam
-No Elephants parads(there is only one or two Elephants in Whole colombo)
-No special gem discounts.
-Females, if a good looking guy nicely dressed aproach to you tellimg these stuff, just ignore
-all the color tuktuks are same price, no higher rates to black onese like black cabs lol
-mostly these people stay around Colombo fort, galleface green especially next to the hilton hotel.
-Always get advice from your hostel/hotel rexeption. I remember we used to warn about these stuff but still people get cheated.

Also what you called the president's palace is actually the old parliment. His house is on the same street, past the Kingsbury, the clock tower, on the left hand side. Understate white house with lots of security. I walked by it one morning and never realized what it was.
