Sri Lankan Malays have had a deep impact on Sri Lankan society. They have contributed a significant amount to Sri Lankan culture and identity that outweighs the size of their community. Here are a few examples to learn more about them:
      1. Cuisine: A very large part of the Sri Lankan cuisine is composed of dishes that were created by Sri Lankan Malays or based on dishes from the Malay peninsula and Indonesia. Some of these foods include sambol, kaha bath (nasi kuning), lamprais, dodol, wattalapan and seenakku (cheena kueh).
      2. Settlement: There were three major waves of Malay migrants to Sri Lanka. The first two waves were led by Malays who were Buddhist and settled along the coasts of Sri Lanka, especially in the southeast. They intermarried with the locals, contributing Malay genetic admixture to coastal populations in Sri Lanka. This is part of the reason why you can find Malay-like phenotypes among Sri Lankans who don't identify as "Malay". Additionally, there are theories that certain Sinhalese surnames indicate that a Sinhalese person has Malay ancestry. The most recent wave of Malays were the Malay and Javanese Muslims who are a recognised separate group in Sri Lankan society and came during the colonial era. The belief among Sri Lankan Malay historians is that a very large portion of Sri Lankan people have at least some Malay ancestry due to generations of intermixing, meaning the Malay population in Sri Lanka is much larger than the official stats. Historical estimates also claim Colombo (the capital of modern Sri Lanka) was once 50% Malay during the pre-British colonial era (Dutch and Portuguese). The neighbourhood of Slave Island (known as Kampong Kertel to the local Malays) is Colombo's traditional Malay neighbourhood and was at one point suggested that it be renamed to "Malaytown".
      3. Culture: Malays have contributed to aspects of Sri Lankan culture beyond food including the introduction of batik (which is now a quintessential part of Sri Lankan identity) as well as traditional garments such as the redde and hatte dress of Sinhalese women and sarong among other things.

As a Sinhala Buddhist i wholeheartedly feel for the Malay community in Sri lanka. We really have taken so much from them with very little credit given. As she said they have given us so much not only food. Even batik. We have a significant batik industry in our country and we also have made it as our own. Many Sinhala Bhudhists wear batik clothing as it is integral part of our culture. Also many people dont know that it was the Sri lankan malays who introduced the drums to the island. We use the rabban which is a large drum used on our new years and also many drums are used for our Kandyan dancing also Kandyan Perahara which is one of the biggest Bhudhist cultural and historical parades. So it is not just food the Sri lanka malays community has truly given so much. Big thanks to best ever food review show for coming to Sri lanka and painting the real picture.
P.S i didnt mean to upset anyone i just wrote what i felt and know. I have history masters from peradeniya university. • @govithabang8912
      @govithabang8912 Год назад +22

When the lady in this video says that the Malay community in Sri Lanka is 'dying', she does not mean that the Malay people are being put to death. The Malay community in Sri Lanka is very small and, as a result, people of the Malay community frequently marry people from other Sri Lankan communities, - as the Malay lady goes on to explain later in the video. As such, the number of people who are purely of Malay origin is reducing in Sri Lanka. This should not be viewed as undesirable. It is, after all, the right of every person in Sri Lanka (and elsewhere) to enter into marriage with any person they wish to irrespective of the other person's race. Sri Lankan Malays tend to be very sociable and, unlike other Sri Lankan Muslims, are more open to associating with people of other Sri Lankan communities. The Malay people in Sri Lanka are very musical and they also often engage in a variety of sports. These qualities lead to Sri Lankan Malays associating much more with other Sri Lankan communities than other Sri Lankan Muslims. These associations, which usually start off on the basis of friendship, not infrequently take on romantic connotations leading to marriage. As such, over time, the number of 'mixed' Malay people in Sri Lanka has increased while the number of 'pure' Sri Lankan Malay people has declined.
Another point to note is that, though the people of this community are generally known and referred to as 'Malay' this does not necessarily mean that they are all from Malaysia. Many Sri Lankan Malays are originally from Indonesia, especially from the main island of Jawa in Indonesia.
Sri Lankan Malays have played an important role in Sri Lanka's history and are an integral and inseparable part of Sri Lankan society. Their difference from other Sri Lankans only adds to the value of all Sri Lankans and they are a beloved aspect of Sri Lankan society. They are as Sri Lankan as anything you will find in Sri Lanka.

I'm happy that there is a Sri Lankan restaurant near me where I can experience a portion of the amazing food I had there and I hope to go back soon. I miss this country and everything about it so much

The memories of Sri Lankan food evoke a cupboard full of spices and rich curries that bring together families. Sri Lankan food is an expression of the country's rich history and is full of delightful surprises, just like the island itself. Characterised by vibrant colours and fragrant aromas, every dish, from main meals to desserts and cakes, makes use of the country's bounty of fresh spices. An ordinary Sinhalese curry, for example, can contain up to thirteen herbs and spices: chillies, coriander, cumin, curry leaves, fennel, fenugreek, garlic, ginger, lomongrass, lime, onion, pandanus leaf and turmeric.
It is no wonder, then, that spices are used by Sri Lankan people with such ease, not only creating food that is unique and interesting, but also accessing their healing properties as part of Ayurvedic medicine.
    Cheers, Domenico.

I'm someone who's born and lived in Malaysia all my life yet I had no idea there were a Malay community in Sri Lanka.
The food there has a tinge of authentic Malay food. You can tell it's evolved yet somewhat still has that original essence. The pittu or 'putu bambu' (flour, shredded coconut and maybe sugar? cooked in bamboo) though isn't easy to find in Malaysia. It has faded away and replaced by RM1 fried chicken, smoked bbq chicken wings and milk tea boba, these modern roadside snacks are everywhere. I haven't seen those putu bambu in years.
I do wonder how did those Malays end up in Sri Lanka and imma Google that once I'm done watching this.
Again, this channel is consistently giving us top of the shelf quality documentation of food and cultures all around the world in HD for free. Unbelievable and thank you Sonny and Team.
    To your great health.

Moors are different to Malays, though there is intermarriage between them due to shared religion. The native language of the Moors is Tamil and the native language of the Malays is Sri Lankan Malay.
Having said that, I just want to say the Moor community actually warned the Sri Lankan government about rising extremism in their community. They practice a form of Islam that is primarily Sufi influenced and is more similar to the form of Islam practiced in other parts of South Asia (e.g. India and Southeast Asia (e.g. Myanmar, Thailand). However, due to a lot of Moors travelling to the Middle East to work, a large section became conservative and adopted Arabic customs and interpretation of Islam (Wahhabism). The situation is similar to what has happened in some Southeast Asian countries to the east of Sri Lanka like Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines where large sections of the local Muslim populations have become very conservative against the South/Southeast Asian interpretation of Islam.

For example, an Bengali Muslim is totally different from a Kerala Muslim and north Indian Muslim. It is wrong to throw the entire community under the bus but it is better to know which communities are getting radicalized and help the moderates and good people take control of their community and help young people to focus on their career rather than ideology.
The reason I asked was not to blame them but to get an idea which Muslim group had issues. Most young Muslims in the US are lovely people and very good at mixing with other communities but I have seen that older Muslims and very few young ones hate Jews to the extreme.

Iconic dishes like the Ambul Thiyal, Hathmaluwa, Polos Achcharu and the variety of food from the east and the south of the country simply slipped off your trip, and also the staple 'rice and curry' that you should've digged your fingers into! I assume Ruzaina did her research and all but it looks like she could only show you what she had experience with and was comfortable with. Traditional Sinhalese cuisine is not that different from traditional Indian cooking, which is common all over the world, though Indian cuisine has far greater variety than Sri Lankan cooking. An exception could be seafood, in which I feel Sri Lankan cuisine has the edge. Certainly for mutton and chicken dishes, Indian cooking has much better dishes and great variety. Even in vegetarian cooking, Indian cooking has a very wide range of dishes compared to Sinhalese cooking. In all honesty, being a Sri Lankan and having eaten Sinhalese cooking most of my life, I find Indian cooking way better. The cuisine of Sri Lankan Malays is very special because it is different from most other types of cooking which I have come across. I have to admit, though, that I have not eaten most of the dishes shown in this video. They look absolutely to die for.

    • @govithabang8912

@@jamesccohen You know I didn't pick up on it. I made my comment, which was entirely culinary and then read your comment and it clicked. The problem we have in Sri Lanka, is that we do not travel much because it is far too costly for Sri Lankans living in Sri Lanka and our education system has not evolved at all from the time we were ruled by the Brits. As a result, we are under-educated but don't realise we are, until we travel. This person is very likely someone who is 50+ years of age, has lived his/her life entirely in Sri Lanka and has had 11 years' education entirely in Sri Lanka. Nothing can be done to change that kind of mindset, not even brain surgery. On the other hand, the Internet has opened the younger generation of Sri Lankans to another world outside of Sri Lanka and they think very differently from their parents who blindly followed their own parents. So, there is still hope for my country.

I'm Srilankan Malayy. I think we are a mix of Malaysian, Indonesian and Javanese. Our Malay sounds similar to yours than Malaysian Malay though. You can search for Srilankan Malay in youtube if you like.

This is my favourite channel. Sonnys' ability to integrate with other cultures so respectfully is second to none. Not only watching the different foods but learning about the vast array of cultures is my favourite pasttime ❤️

I love your shows sunny. You should have visited Kisumu while you were in Kenya.
Anyway, cooking ruminants intestines is a norm in Kenya. So am proud of that delicious Curry. 👍👍👍👍
