Summary:
On this date, Bill Graham assembled a stellar roster of bands to participate in the filming of a television special called Welcome To The Fillmore East for broadcast on educational channels. Short sets were filmed by the Byrds, the Elvin Bishop Group, Sha-Na-Na, Van Morrison, and the Allman Brothers Band, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of Bill Graham and the Fillmore East staff at work.
The Allman Brothers performance is nothing short of spectacular and features the original lineup that included Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Recorded six months prior to the legendary Live At Fillmore East double album set, this performance captures the Allman Brothers when they were a relatively new band, full of youthful passion and performing what would become classic original material when it was fresh and new.
Following Bill Graham's introduction, they kick things off with a tight performance of "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'," which features the band's friend, Tom Doucette, blowing harp over the group's trademark sound. Gregg's vocal is barely audible, but it's obvious the group is full of fire. "Dreams," which follows, slows things down a bit and the group establishes a relaxed groove that showcases their trademark sound, blending elements that would eventually come to define "Southern Rock."
They hit their stride on the next number, Dickey Betts' "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed." Here, the dual guitar attack of Allman and Betts is astounding. The two guitarists intertwine and synchronize in a manner nothing short of telepathic, creating a melting pot seasoned with elements of jazz, rock, country, and blues into a style utterly their own. The set ends with a ferocious take of "Whipping Post" that features outstanding melodic bass playing from Berry Oakley, with both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts soaring over the propulsive rhythm section. Shorter than the expansive versions that would develop in coming months, this is all the more fascinating for it, as they compress an incredible amount of energy into the time allotted.
Time constrictions and vocal microphone malfunctions aside, this is still a fascinating performance. This original lineup of the band was certainly one of the most innovative and captivating bands to ever play the Fillmore. - Видеоклипы
Came here to pay tribute to Dickey Betts RIP

Copy that. Legendary.

Who in the hell would thumbs down The Allman Brothers, you're not right get help
They have no idea the magnitude of this.
I was at this show. I was a regular at the Fillmore East. It was close and tickets were 4 to 5 dollars. We could afford to go every week. I was the right age, in the right place, and got to witness rock and roll history. The legends all played there. The music they gave us is still considered rock and roll gold.
A while back on RUclips maybe a year or so ago, there was a picture of the marquee sign over the Fillmore with the line up of bands on closing night. I can’t remember them all, but I remember the Allman Brothers Band, the J. Geils Band, Mountain and others. Were you there? You were one fortunate dude. I bet you were the one who shouted “play all night”!!
@@michaelbirke6050 The marquee on closing night says : ALLMAN BROTHERS J GEILS BAND ALBERT KING JOE'S LIGHTS. Search Fillmore East, Images. You will find a photo, I'm sure. I can't send you mine or I would.
Yes, I was at that last concert. I didn't miss very many, as I said, I was a regular there.
@michaelbirke6050 the bill for the concerts that sourced the Fillmore East album was,Allman Brothers, J.Geils Band and Albert King.....
In early/"spring 1971....awesome bill....
@@michaelbirke6050 those concerts took place before the last shows.... I think a few months before....the Fillmore LP was not sourced from the last shows
I'll tell you this, no eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn. Dickie Betts was one of the best guitar players in the world & only because Dickie & Greg were both great song writers was probably the only reason the Allman Brothers were able to continue on & be successful. We all get old but it's sad when the people who provided us with the music that created the soundtrack of our lives get old & pass away & the Allman Brothers Band were a big part of my life as anybody & I wish them peace & love & togetherness for eternity in Heaven 🎸
❤
From 1963-1978 the best music ever was born, and I was allowed to experience that time and was young. I have everything ..... and thank god.
That's one good thing about RUclips you can watch in Awesome video from 1970 in 2020 and appreciate The Allman Brothers Band when they were just beginning this is pure gold and will be cherished for years to come . God blessed these old videos that find their way to RUclips
Everybody’s dream was to be in a band like that... so happy for those boys they found lightning in a bottle. Such a thing to behold,
Good post. Maximum feeling by The Allman Brothers.
Yeah.. Lightning in a corcidin bottle lol catch my drift ?
No stopping them !
@@Mr.CoachBeaulieuThey lived together in a wood shack with a tin roof 80 miles South of Macon Georgia in a cow pasture when they wrote these songs . How else could a person do it?
In one of Dickey's last interviews , he said that this band was the best thing that ever happened to him. Also, him and Gregg loved each other and that the media hyped up their falling outs. They were a family and Lord knows that families fight.😉
Being blind is not a musical hindrance, it is a musical benefit when you can see with your ears!
I came here to pay tribute to all the allman brothers..only one left..rip brothers
I never made the show, I was only 14. I just now came across this video, and I'm not 14 anymore. Bless you boys, you were awesome.
Too Sad you missed a Live Performance. These guys were Southern Rock.
The best American rock band of all time
Yes and no. Listen to "Do You Wanna Dance" by the Beach Boys. Duane Allman is the greatest musician of all time, next to Brian Wilson, who went toe to toe with the Beatles and won. (Pet Sounds is the greatest pop record in history, by acclimation..)
@@herbertrichard614 I love Duane, but stop with the hyperbole. Duane Allman can't hold a candle to someone like Stevie Wonder, for example. Or Vladimir Horowitz.
@@q45ij54q Fair point and Eddie Van Halen is as good as Duane Allman.
Lynyrd Skynyrd comes 1st The Allman brothers second
Let's put it this way you can't mention rock blues bands without mentioning the Allman Brothers okay!!! Their music never gets old!!!
So sad that we can't recover the lost fidelity and volume of these great shows. At least we can hear the rest of the band, and what a blessing it is. I almost feel sorry for the folks that won't or haven't discovered these great bands of the past. There is nothing like them alive today.
I agree. I miss analog recording, tube amps and cords all over ☺
So true, Southern randr rules
Truth 💣💣💣💣💣💣💣. We're so lucky and the coolest for it. Songs of the 70s gave us a really cool 😎 aura. Songs of today's generation makes them friggin killers idiots and thugs. We're blessed
Killin' me..A really bad loss in recording history..damn.
R.I.P. Gregg. The Brothers are reunited. Thanks for the decades of great music.
A quote by Duane Allman (November 20, 1946 - October 29, 1971): "You can't help the revolution, because there's just evolution ... Every time I'm in Georgia, I eat a peach for peace".
Peace be unto you my brother. RIP.
I love the ABB!!!
Hey from Hotlanta! ABB Forever
Yup, the reporter's question was "what are you doing to help the anti Vietnam war movement?" ✌️😎
Harry the hat is correct too, but he just beat me to it
@@patrickc.mcevoy2065 Eat a peach 🍑 was slang for eating pu##y , Duane and Greg were good old Southern boys , Read Greg Allman's book it's great, his father was murdered when he got out of the service and was trying to help out a fellow soldier , great book
These guys could play for five hours completely stoned and never miss a note
Oh, they missed a lot of notes -- not like I blame them. But when you listen to the complete Fillmore recordings, it's obvious why the versions for the original LP were chosen. For some reason there's a good handful of times Dickey Betts loses the downbeat in his solos. On an outtake of Hot 'Lanta, for instance, he somehow winds up a half-measure ahead of the rest of the band, and it really fucks everyone up.
Happy birthday skydog! Duane would have been 71 yrs old today. 11/20/46. We can only imagine what he would have contributed to the music world. He had contributed so much already at 24.
I think he had hit his peak already ala Eric Clapton great guitarist whose best work was all early on. Duane had already influenced so many artists as a sessions guitarist before the ABB. His unique blues and Jazz influenced playing made Dickey Betts the monster guitarist he became and he took over leadership after Duane left way too early.
Berry Oakley was one of the most undersung bass players ever. His parts were just so damn appropriate to the situation, yet ingenious.
If you haven't heard this isolated track of Berry, you're gonna love it. ruclips.net/video/3OuDaqSFvYc/видео.html

And he was one wicked good guitar player as well.
Berry Oakley was as brilliant as the guy that picked him out to play with the Allman Brothers Band 🖤🍄🍑🎶🎸🎵🎸
well, he's world famous you know
I can't believe the Allman Brothers are gone. I'm so grateful we have these recordings. This music is timeless
Duane's playing is honestly so powerful and soulful that it brings a tear to my eyes
Right, Duane Allman is the greatest musician next to Brian Wilson. It is the difference between a southern sunset and the neon lights of Hollywood Boulevard. Advantage Beach Boys.

Powerful 😮
Dickey Betts is my favorite rock guitarist, and his song Blue Sky my all time favorite song. Such great guitar work. RIP Dickey Betts. 🎸
Same here brother. Duane is my favorite all time but Dickey was the man. RIP
I grew up on Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, etc. By the time I was born(1988)this music was dead and gone.
Those of us who are over 50 know this is one of the best albums ever! RIP Gregg Allman.....may you be with your brother Duane resting in Rock n Roll Heaven!
Actually, these are not the performances that went on the original Fillmore East album - nor are they on the reissue of the entire Fillmore East recordings that were the source for the original, which is well worth the purchase. But you’re right: That original At Fillmore East album is one of the high water marks in rock/blues/jazz history
Not resting! I want them playing full blast with Lennon, Hendrix, Elvis, etc al.
I'm 33 and I know hehe
This isn't even the record. This is from another show. The album sounds way better but this performance is close to equal but very different. The live album is way better but here you can see them! What a band!
I play this album often and 74
Watching this makes me want to cry. Gregg Allman's passing away today hurts my soul
The music of the 60s and 70s was spectacular. We will never see this talent again.
kristi schrittwieser this was truly a golden era for music... but to say that we’ll never see this talent again is to ignore all that’s come since. I’d encourage you to check out Marcus King & The Sheepdogs, both acts are younger and prove that southern rock is very much alive 😄
Very true. Well said. The shit being spewed out nowadays is beyond abysmal. It is all no talent, uninspiring, unintelligent garbage.
@@BrettSmithDaniels The originators will always be superior to the copiers.
@@Tessmage_Tessera not always necessarily true! The Allman Bros influences came from further back than just the 1960's, and nobody can deny they built upon those foundations. The same is true of certain newer acts. It doesn't detract from the older acts though, they deserve their reputation and place in music history - but there are many incredible musicians right now being overlooked. Have a listen to some of the artists I listed 😁

This music isn’t gone. The era is (this generation produced the very BEST music based on human experience).
Duane might be the heart and soul of this band, but without Greg the legend would never continue... He is definitely the quintessential brother.
True. Best rock vocal and best rock guitar. And to go to No. 1 after Duane died showed straight up heart.
Duane's guitar playing is just unreal!!! What a talent he was!!
+Mc Ren True, Sky Dog's playing is at times simply spiritual, a prayer on six strings!
+Mc Ren he never even got to peak man that's what blows my mind
no truer words could be said! both he and Berry Oakley were magnifique! and I saw them in 1970, at the Spectrum, in Phila.
Every one says Dickey was underrated . Not how many notes you play in a minute or how loud it is doesn't make you better . Duane played from his HEART and SOUL !
He was better . But it's close .
Im going down the Allman Bros musical rabbit hole .Duane is the one I’m not yet familiar with (listening).

Watching this the day after Dickey’s passing. I’m still shaken by it. My favorite band. I really never quite understood why. They just touched my musical soul like no other band. Their guitars were like waving magic wand’s over my ears. I miss them all greatly.

@@MsMbpayne Sadly, that's about all we can watch because the cameraman was too ignorant to focus on what Duane's hands were doing.
I get an indescribable feeling when I hear Dwayne Allman play.
Duane Allman is easily the greatest guitar player in history. Consider that Hendrix, Clapton, Page, and Beck were all attempting to recreate a world that Duane lived in. Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
Unbelievable. Saw them twice with Duane. I've seen so many groups live but these guys are by far the best in concert!
The great Duane left us way too soon. Imagine what they could have achieved in the 1970's if he had lived.
True, however following the death of Duane Allman the bands next two records went to No. 7 and No. 1. They carried on. Duane Allman is the greatest musician in history. That said, had he lived would the Allan Brothers conquered the world? Can't say.

I'll say it again, Dickey Betts has never gotten the recognition he deserves so much for being a phenomenal guitar player!🍄🍑
The problem is that Dickey played in the same band as Duane Allman
Charlie daniels gave him a shoutout
Agreed ma'am

Bullshit
RIP Dickey Saw the ABB many many times over the years and it was always a joyous occasion
My best friend is Duane's 'great' nephew. The resemblance is uncanny. I'm proud to know him.
As long as Audio and Visual recordings exist and we have the means to watch and hear them, Duane Allman will be immortal.
Duane's incredible gift for finding his place for the pitch he wanted no matter where on the neck he began a slide from was always uncanny. This video captures much of that magic. Quick stops, down, up vibrato, pitch and timing perfect dives - amazing stuff. Derek Trucks is the closest I've heard since, but Duane always sounded so spontaneous that you felt in in your spine.
Spontaneous is a fantastic way of describing his playing. It almost feels like a tightrope act all the way through one of his blistering slide solos in a way. In my opinion, Derek has truly taken Duane's ideas and approach to slide playing and taken them to an even higher level. Duane was playing it unlike anyone else back in his day, and Derek is now doing the same with this generation of music. Both are fantastic for numerous reasons.
David Zabel duanes fatal accident was no accident it was DEMONIC by design...the motorcycle was FLUNG into the air and landed ON TOP of poor duane ...he WAS wearing a helmet but the sheer force of impact broke the helmet open and it fell off...the evil nature of his crash and subsequent tragic death points squarely at demonic evil forces at work here...evil spirits DO NOT fuck around...they get right to it....I'm not blaming Mr. Allman....he tried to obey the traffic laws and he still got ripped apart...I'd love to see the remains of the helmet after the crash just to prove my point...I know non believers would say bullshit there's no such thing as demos or evil spirits it was just a sad tragic accident but something tells me it was more...and much worse ...than it seemed...rip duane and gregg....loved and missed...always....hope there are a lot of peach trees where u are now....
Nothing but ears & hands.

RIP Dickie Betts. Witnessed his amazing talent first hand at the early show Schaefer Music Festival in Central Park in 1971. What a night! A friend had an extra ticket and asked me to join him. I thought I was going to see the Chambers Brothers (Time Has Come Today). Needless to say, a wonderful surprise!

I was there when Bill Graham announced that he would be recording the concert, it was the second show back in the day they would play two shows a night, one of the best concerts I' ever saw they where so tight great band RIP Allmans
When with Barry Oakley and Duane Allman, The Allman Brothers are solidly ranked in the top 5 of all time great bands.
Try number 1
They are a great band but I think The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, the Who & Springsteen top them out, and I haven't even mentioned Dylan
"Whipping Post" compared to.....can anyone think of anything The Beatles did that even comes close? I'm struggling to come up with something.
Military Mom A day in the life is my favorite Beatle song but so many of their songs got played to death back in the day that what was classics such as Magical Mystery Tour, Hey Jude or Revolution became stale over time. Love Whipping Post snd love the Allman Bros but you would have to be a die hard to say they were in the same league, which is fine
HamiltonRb Hamilton RB...ok, fair enough so point taken. Happy New Year!
Gregg was 23 when this was recorded? Jeezus, he sounded like an old bluesman even as a kid. Unreal voice, great muscians
Much was said of Johnny Lang's voice at 16 years old. Compared to Gregg's voice and blues singing it was phenomenal. I loved to hear Gregg sing, all the way until he married the gypsy. I gave up on him for that brief period, then he redeemed himself once again. Great blues singer.

Dickey and all of them legends. Listened to them endlessly as a kid
I suspect I'm not alone when I find myself as emotionally gripped by the passion of Dickey Betts guitar work as I am by Duane Allman in this awesome early performance. They were the perfect foil for each others approach , contrasting and distinct in their tone and feel but capable of playing as though of one mind, lost in the melodic but, found in the harmonic, a band in sync but sympathetic to living in the moment.
Their music is so compelling, it's complex but accessible, uncompromising but never elitist, an antidote to all that's bland and formuleric in modern music.
The Allman Brothers band are inclusive, nurturing the talents of guitarists like Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks, and very much a musical family who while carrying the torch within the band have broken new ground in various bands and musical collaborations taking their music to new places and new heights of virtuosity and in the process Inspire a new generation of musicians.
Your astute observation expressed with such divine articulation is a breath of fresh air ! I hope to find your comments on other posts.
Duane Allman is the best and the most passionate guitar player who ever lived. This my opinion but I truly believe I'm right.

Guy R.C. I love Dickey’s playing and i agree that him and Duane complemented each other fabulously. However it seems to me that Duane was leading the situation and I think it shows in his playing
Very well said!
Duane could go on with a thread that combined the melody , the rhythm , the song snd other things that musicians can tell you ,for 20 minutes and never bore you. And let us not forget that great blues singer little brother, Gregg, who helped carry off one of the greatest concerts of all time.

Surviving Duane and Barry's deaths is a testament to how good these dudes were. How many bands could recover from such tragedy.
It’s amazing how many great rock talents either died or had bad crashes on motorcycles back then. Bon Scott,Duane,Barry and more.
I’ve been listening to the ABB for about 40 years now and I absolutely love their music and still do. R.I.P. brothers.
Dickey Betts is often overlooked because of Duane but he is truly one of the greatest to ever do it
What are the odds that a fantastic guitar player and excellent singer/organ player came out of the same family to form a band like this? The studios (and studio musician) that first recorded them were blown away! I bought this album when it came out. It is still my benchmark for live recording experiences.
My older brother introduced me to their music in 1971. Duane Allman inspired many a high school kid back then to take up electric guitar and I'll never forget my brother's shock at Duane's untimely death.
I was shocked and so sad about Duane's death...It seemed that a little bit of everything died when he died. At 14:10 on this, the bass power and drums are awesome. Always listening.
Man duanes first solo in whipping post is epic. I wish he'd have stuck around longer. What an awesome group the Allman brothers were with Duane leading.
+Will Thacker when people at concerts other than Allman Bros used to shout out a request to what ever band was onstage for "Whipping Post" - this version could very well be the reason why - that was amazing right?
Maybe some did it for that reason but we did it because the band onstage couldn't play for shit and we were being assholes about it. Not nice but that's what happened.
still the best band in the world
There has never been anybody like Gregg Allman. Maybe a lot has to with his brother Duane pushing him in the beginning. Duane had a lot to do with it, but the talent came from Gregg. Don't let us forget the talent of Duane Allman. Rolling Stone magazine named him #2 in 2010 as the greatest guitarist, dead at age 24 from a motorcycle accident. So talented. So creative in ways we will never know. Let us not forget "Skydog".
Berry Oakley is always in the top bassists lists too. Genius group.
I have to say that The Allman Brothers Band was before my time, but I never realized just how loaded with talent this band was.

Wow.. Duane was kickin' it. It was awesome to "see" this show which I've heard countless times, as a teenager growing up in a place where you'd be likely to actually walk into your favorite bar and see Dicky or Gregg or Butch.
+Pati Beardsley Where was that? Macon ? Atlanta? Just wondering, not trying to put you on the spot, I only ask because I live in Daytona and saw Duane & Greg in places here before they moved to Georgia. By Butch I think you are talking of the trucks family? I envy you.
The best band ever, rest in peace Dicky Betts.
Graduated H.S. in the 60s so grew up during those phenomenal years. Still listening to Fillmore East original pressing today! Never gets old.
Top Five Band of all times! Truly Great!
R.I.P Greg Allman. Your memory will live on through your music.
I still have my Fillmore concert program and ticket stub from the night of March 13, 1971. Johnny Winter opened the concert, followed by the ABB and capped off with Elvin Bishop.
No Doubt a GREAT SHOW !!
Man, I don't envy Elvin Bishop trying to follow JW & the ABB.
Never do I ever get tired of watching these gorgeous, oh so talented men set the stage on fire with their awesome gifts!!!! LOVE IT ❣️🥰🎸🎹🎤🥁🪕🎶💓
many of the concerts in the late 60's and early 70's got filmed as cheaply as possible. This is good quality by 48 year old standards and the audio is great. I love it.
Some of the best American guitar playing ever heard.
Thank God this was recorded. Even though the quality isn’t great and apparently the cameraman is stoned, be grateful!!!!!
I'm almost 60 and the more I listen to and watch the Allman Bros., the more I notice how very talented they truly were/are. They kicked total ass! In my opinion, Whipping Post has to be one of their stellar achievements.
I grew up listening to these guys. Just always loved it even though I was in elementary school when this performance happened. Good music never dies.
