I was a high school and college intern for Bud Hobgood (James Brown's producer/engineer) at King Records in Cincinnati back in the day. He ALWAYS recorded the bass DIRECT to the board, and the amp was only used so the bass player could hear in the studio. He ALWAYS recorded the bass on TWO TRACKS. One was CLEAN DIRECT,and the second was recorded with a SLIGHT DELAY on an EMT plate reverb. The delayed track was positioned HARD LEFT, and the clean track was positioned HARD RIGHT. It worked well for his Funky R&B tracks.
Hi Friends, I hope you're doing marvellously well! Today, we're getting into the second tutorial of our brand-new mixing series on youtube: In this series, I'm mixing the song "Stay New" by Little Empire from start to finish and show you how I mixed every instrument in detail. You can download the multitracks of this song for free and mix it for yourself. It will be a lot of fun! In today's video, we're talking about mixing bass. Getting your low-end to sound punchy, big and powerful can present quite a challenge and it’s often said that the "low-end separates the men from the boys”. So with this tutorial I'm going to try to give you some ideas on how to control your bass, so it sounds powerful, consistent and cuts through a dense pop/rock mix. You can watch the tutorial and download the multitracks here:- www.producelikeapro.com/2017/01/17/mixing-bass-tutorial/ Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
My chain for the bass on this one was 1176 (riding pretty hard) > EQ (soft roll off FabFilter Saturn > API 2500 (again, riding, but a little softer). I *HIGHLY* recommend checking out the fab filter Saturn saturator. I put fairly heavy tube saturation on the bottom end, maybe
Thanks ever so much Ben! You Rock! Thanks ever so much for sharing your chain and giving us some additional insight! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
"If anybody tells you you're doing it wrong if it sounds good, then it sounds good; there's lots of different ways to do this..." W.H. Marvelously well!
Thanks Warren for these videos. I just finished the Drum mix tutorial for this song and am now ready for the bass!! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.
Perfect Mike! Excited to hear your mix! Please post it on the Produce Like A Pro FaceBook Page so we can hear it!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hola Warren. Feliz Nuevo año. Es increíble lo que haces y se agradece . Muchos no comparten sus conocimientos, y tú lo haces con alegría. Mucho éxito este año. Saludos desde Chile.
Thanks for the video Warren! Been working on this month's Nail the Mix and having issues with the bass. Thanks for clearing that right up :) All the best!
Since the beginning I didn't like the DI track but did like the amp track. Now, I'm not using the DI track but the Vacuum tracks, Strings Legato tracks and Synth Pad tracks to create a more electronic-like body and ambience along with the Amp Bass track. While the Amp Bass acts only as the lower register, the Vacuum tracks seem to sound as the presence of the bass in the choruses, and the Strings Legato and Synth Pad still get along very well with the bass in the intro and bridges.
Hi, Warren. How're you today? First of all thank you for this kind of video. What I like the most is your explanation about the reason in each step. Can you make a video about productivity inside Pro Tools? Your favorite hot keys, configuration et cetera. Best regards
Strings hitting the pickups are pretty much the signature tone of a Jazz Bass: ask Geddy Lee. ;) Thank you for a yet another informative video, Warren!
Hi Warren, thanks for the great tutorial. Would be nice to see your plugin settings more clearly in order to reproduce them on my own. Maybe zooming in on it would help.
I just tried using the DI for the lows and amp for highs. Works good, thanks!!! Used a guitar amp instead, actually. Just for my own play along tracks for drum practice. May as well sound as good as possible...Also, I really like the hi hat in your mix, too. I hate it on some records where they take all the body out them.
another great video! something off the mark here - How do you balance work and family life? Its a question thats probably never been addressed by many producers and writers like myself and others Im sure! on one hand I love my family and I work hard for them - on the other I love what I do and its not work but a never ending quest to find meaning of the language we explore! Im lucky enough to have some great kit in the studio to help me get there but ultimately the creating and nurturing takes time and love- its like having two families! It would be great to see a video talk more about this challenge we all face as producers and artists especially musicians! I started violin and piano age 6 and studio all the way up to the royal academy of music london working in music till now (im 33 ) so its all I known! now recently married and planning kids! Please think about making a video about this im some way we all have to deal with it and the choices we make are life changing! Steven
devilzbeats Hi Steven! Wonderful question! I have touched on it a little in past videos and in the Academy we talk about it alit. I will definitely talk about it more! Thanks for sharing your experience, I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
"Hey", Warren enjoyed the tips as always. Looking forward to downloading the tracks. I'm having alot of fun mixing Blame it on the Whiskey, love the song. That's my kind of music. You couldn't record that song any better, you really captured the bands vibe and everything was crystal clear. All those room mics made it a challenge for me and I enjoyed it. I don't have the option to use so many so it was good opportunity to work on a new skill. The phase alignment was perfect so that made it easier from the start. I was curious did you cut that on a Neve console?
Aw shucks thanks very much Kris! I had an amazing time recording Robert Jon, I'm extremely glad you enjoyed mixing the track! If you are a member of the Academy there are many more songs you can mix! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
If you want cleanliness use VI. I'm all up for bratty, dirty, badass, human performances, and make it part of the appeal of the song. As usual great tips, improving production and lots of fun listening to you. Cheers!
You should get some Darkglass gear (like the B7k or the B3k) to get that distortion/"ugliness" right away instead of adding it later on :) The great thing about the B7k is that it has a DI-out as well as a parallel output that is left clean and "untouched". Just a thought :)
Hi Warren, this is an incredible tutorial, thank you! I've noticed that my master is clipping with the same settings. Do you have plans to discuss what's on your mix buss?
Sean McNerney great question! Yes we will talk mix bus! I would suggest just bring it down a little to avoid the master bus clipping. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Hi wonderful video as usual! Do you have a video on "vocal ducking" ? I'm sorry if my terminology is incorrect but I've seen the term thrown around a lot. I just want the vocal to sit correctly within the beat (and set up the proper bus routing). I can't seem to escape piano, snare, kick and bass frequencies. It's driving me insane and I'll admit a bit discouraging at times but I'm trying to remain optimistic about perfecting the correct recording practices. 12 years in and it is down right shameful that I haven't figured it out yet. Please help if possible.
Include Antares DUO Evo on the guitar. I just heard it and it works mar.. tremendously well. Turn it on and all complicated recordings to get wide stereo is unnecessary. What's the monitor up on the wall doing, the one with the light green lines?
Thank you for another useful video Warren, +Produce Like A Pro. In the spirit of minimal money and equipment, what would you suggest for someone who only has a DI bass signal. Would you for instance recommend using a software amp to create an 'amp tone', then proceed per the instructions in this video. Hey man, nice video! I've always loved the idea of making or even analyzing music with some app for the computer. I never used any kind of app and I know nothing about it (of course, I'll learn someday😂😂😂). I would like to know, which program are you using in this video? scmete mete great question! I personally record using compression if I can! I like getting sound as close as possible! However as you can hear here I didn't compress much at all! I was working quickly and getting spend time getting a great tone! So I 'fixed it in the mix' a little more than normal! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

JL R great question! I have a small Ashdown and it sounds great! Doesn't have to be tube! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
warren .. question...4 u the bass D.I. signal what did it come from split signal or amp di .. where there any eq or other prosessing going from the di into your recording ????? reason i ask is we could just ream the DI signal to get the sound we want . realamp orpluggin mods thanks a schnizzel load for you fantastic help in all matters thus far . kind regards T
tony hudspeth great question! I very often print my Di very clean with no compression or EQ, I rarely EQ the Di when recording. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
That's a great idea Bruno! Yes you can sidechain the Bass using the kick hit to gently compress the bass by a DB or two to create space in the bottom end so it doesn't have excessive amounts of bottom end in the mix! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Is this a recorded bass amp or an amp or speaker sim? I do like DI tones for clean stuff but also nothing beats that SVT sound for rock, to me its the only amp sound where I prefer the low end of the miced 8x10 compared to DI.
Hi JimijaymesGuitarist, thanks for the great comment! That was a real amp! I agree an Ampeg SVT! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Im learning to mix and my levels are all good but It seems like i can't hear everything clear and I only have drums, bass, guitar and a synth. do I need to just get it all tracked and then start panning things to different levels of panning to spread them out?????
Definitely spreading things around will clear up the middle of the mix! Great start indeed to helping your mix open up! Keep the low end instruments centred, like the kick and bass. Also put your lead vocal down the centre. Now have some fun panning other instruments around!
Alternative method to fix problematic notes: open bass track in Melodyne and adjust gain of too loud notes to match the average volume level. Of course, you can fine tune bass timing and tuning at the same time. :)
monkey dangus great question! I was writing the song with Lily so we were putting down ideas quickly and sometimes the best ideas come out this way! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Do you have any tips if im getting a weird ringing sound around 500hz-1khz? after recording from my active DI box. I cant EQ it out as I loose all my low mids that give the bass its tone... Compression is just bring the noise level up so what should I do??
Hi Tom, great question! My first question is how wide is the ringing? If it's very narrow you can pull out that frequency and not change the sound dramatically, if it's wider you might want to try a a Multi Band Compressor! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi The Godfather I have monitors in front of me as well! There is a pair of small Genelecs under the screen and then I will turn around and listen to the larger monitors for reference. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Adam Dixon great question! I like gentle EQ on Piano, so a Pultec sounding EQ is a great idea for me! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Cool. I've been mixing the last 2 nights. I hope to have something up in a few days. I haven't listened to the final track from the band because I want it to be all my own mix. I don't want to be influenced by their mix.
Eolas haha yes I've been mixing a huge amount! Just finished a couple of albums and about to start producing another! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
I had a guitarist that came in with his band and didn't learn his parts. Eventually the band asked me to play his parts on one song but I realised there where dead notes on another song so replayed it. I did not tell the band I played the guitar on this second song and they didn't notice. My question is do you always tell the artist you've replaced something or do you leave it unless they ask? Incidentally the guitarist accused me of being an incompetent mix engineer and conned me from 10 hours work. It's always the bad ones that try to con money from you. :@
Hi smash461986, great question! I personally always tell the artist when I fix something, if you work with someone and they become a good client you wouldn;t want them to find out years later you replaced them. Trust and honesty is the best policy! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hi Citizen Nobody no! Haha if you read any of the Geoff Emerick or talk my friends Jack Douglas or Shelly Yakus you’ll hear they used a huge amount of compression on the way in, plus EQ, and smacked tape hard for extra tape saturation and compression. Then mixed again with additional compression and EQ. At least on Aerosmith, Beatles, Tom Petty, John Lennon etc that is true. Not true of a Jazz ensemble though of course! Or classical music.
First of all thank you for the opportunity to download and mix this amazing song. Here is my mix: soundcloud.com/onesidestudio/little-empire-stay-new-oneside-mix

Tom Quigley great stuff! you're very welcome! Thanks for watching! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
You should get some Darkglass gear (like the B7k or the B3k) to get that distortion/"ugliness" right away instead of adding it later on :) The great thing about the B7k is that it has a DI-out as well as a parallel output that is left clean and "untouched". Just a thought :)

Why have you got no phase correlation meter in the console?
Mark Loving great question! It's being fixed! Thanks for reminding me! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
how can you mixing when monitor behind you
it's difficult to hear right frequency?
Hi The Godfather I have monitors in front of me as well! There is a pair of small Genelecs under the screen and then I will turn around and listen to the larger monitors for reference. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren

What do we do after we mix and master the song?
Hi Troy, great question! You can post it on the Produce Like A Pro Facebook Page! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Cool. I've been mixing the last 2 nights. I hope to have something up in a few days. I haven't listened to the final track from the band because I want it to be all my own mix. I don't want to be influenced by their mix.
Just did!
Thanks for another great video! Btw you look a bit tired, working too much? Ears are not the only thing that you should rest regularly. :P
Eolas haha yes I've been mixing a huge amount! Just finished a couple of albums and about to start producing another! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Can you do us a favor and keep your PT full screen so we can see the details and then put yer mug in an inset? :)
Do you remember the good old days when they would record a bass how they wanted it into the desk maybe a little eq and compression and that was it.
Or classical music.
could you reduce your speaking volume so we can hear your music with same volume ?
First of all thank you for the opportunity to download and mix this amazing song.
Here is my mix:
