I’ve been recording for many years, back in the tape daze (and I mean daze), we wanted super clean sounds to tape. Now people want the hiss and the wow and flutter sounds back. Now we have the best of both worlds, it’s a great time in music history and Warren is the Digital and Analog Sage. Great video.

Great stuff Warren! One really odd but useful thing I like to do sometimes to add a bit of polish and vibe to mix (usually during mastering). Is to blend in white noise that is EVER so subtle; and then process that noise channel with some tape or tube saturation and/or EQ. It's neat because you can really control how "analog" you want it to sound, without completely altering the dynamics of the track!

Great video Warren. You gave me some ideas for sure! I have my templates made, and my go to Master Bus chain is usually:
Slate VBC Rack, but turn off the fg-grey compressor feeding only the FG-RED and FG-MU. I then follow that by a Slate virtual mix rack (VMR) with a Custom Series EQ and a Trim control. I follow that by the Slate Tape simulator then to my Limiter, which is usually an L2. Sometimes I'll add the Virtual Channel strip into the VMR and move the order of the VRM and Tape. It all makes subtle changes. The compressors I don't hit very hard, and I continuously check them as I'm mixing to make sure they aren't hitting too hard. The EQ I use only at the very end to add a tiny bit of something (if required) and the Trim is used solely as a control to make sure I'm not hitting the L2 or anything else after the VMR too hard... it helps keep everything in check! I usually run a parallel bus with everything going to it as well, and compress the hell out of it, then automate that to add punch in places if required, then I also have a clean bus with all tracks going to that as well, and will automate that too. By sending all tracks to each bus, and not just simply copying the master bus pre-fader you have the ability to remove certain instruments from each bus if required. Anyway, that's the quick and dirty version of what I start with... but everything changes depending on the song and style of music... but that's where I start, and some logic behind why I start there. Cheers! Keep up the great work!

I can't quite get this idea. This effect trick is very helpful, but what about the details? Warren you are sending the whole signal to Side Chain Bus with HP Filter on it. This Side Chain Bus is triggering the Waves Renaissance Compressor. At the same time you are also sending whole signal to Clean Bus. Both signals meet at the Master Bus. Wouldn't it create a phasing type of sound when both signals are fed to Master Bus? One of these signals is probably shifted by tiny amount because of EQ and Compression so wouldn't they cancel each others frequencies ? What am I missing ?

Hi Warren, thanks for this vid!!! I think mastering a song is the final step to make your story (song) interesting by the way storytelling is : tension and release... Therefor: Being creative (create movements) with the tools you have on a subtle level, but overal can make a big difference between boredom and excitement from listeners point of view...:) When I listen to for example to EDM productions, I hear a basic song, with arrangements build around it creative, but also the mixers behind it who contribute (and enhance ones story/song) to the endresult of the song for the listener, thats what makes it very excitement for me...It doesnt matter if its not my taste, its the big picture....Respect to all of the people who create from the heart, cheers, Jeroen.
