How about going over different techniques for reverb send fxs, i.e. like using multiple reverbs to create a space, and how you go about processing the reverb sends, which elements you send to which send, and how you control the overall space in regards to each element within the mix? Would really love to see you do an in depth video covering this overall topic and these questions included of course. Thanks for everything you do Warren, your videos are very much appreciated, can't thank you enough for the work you do on this channel!
Thank you so much😊. I am writing this so that i dont forget 😅 ---‐--------------------------------------------------------- Record 1 DI. Make 2 duplicate copies. So total 3 copies. Copy 1: Low passed to make the low frequency cut through and compressed to make them consistent. Copy 2: Hi passed to bring out the character and compressed to make them consistent. Copy 3: Heavily distorted because this will make the peaks smooth so no transient boom will be there. Now all three send to Bass-bus. In Bass-bus, again EQ followed by compression. EQ: Hi pass to make space for kick around 60 Hz with a 12db/octave slope. 12db/octave because while boosting 80hz, it will have lesser boost on 60hz. Boost sweet spots (80, 800, 1200 1500 according to taste) Finally adjust the level of 3 DI to get desired ballance of bass proper, character and distortion. _____________________________________ Additional info: 1. 300 to 700 is muddy area for bass. Get rid of that frequency in Bassbus Eq if it doesn't change the character too much. 2. Create 'Bass pocket' around 100 to 200 Hz and boost bass in that area (the bass-buss eq). 3. To create pocket reduce 100 to 200 hz in other interfering instruments like Kick rhythm guitar piano etc. 4. Get rid of other non contributing parts (Band pass and high cut filter). Getting rid of these unnecessary frequency will make the mix crisp and it will also decrease LUFS and so the mastered version of the song will be able to get more loud without hitting above 16 LUFS.
So now I have to go back to all my old mixes and edit them AGAIN! I must stop watching these tutorials or I'll never get anything finished! Great advice as ever.
RUclips needs a button next to the Like button called, "LOVE THE EVER LOVING HECK OUT OF THIS" button. Great video. You demystify the process and tell us why you do what you do. Invaluable stuff!
We've watched plenty of RUclips videos on how to Mix Low-End...Produce Like A Pro, was the ONLY ONE that Explained it thoroughly! We finally got it! Thanks PLP
So awesome that I instinctively created a “Bass Sandwich 🥪”, consisting of Low-end DI sound, Bass Amp mid-range, and Bass Distortion for top end, and I get amazing results. Joe Barresi, Warren Huart, many producers take the same approach. One sound? No problem. Duplicate it 3 times, buss them together, treat 1 low, 1 mid, and 1 high, and viola, you got a Multi-Band Bass Sandwich that covers all the basses’
Warren, I started my first year of a 3 year degree Monday just gone. My degree is in music production and performance. It has been without doubt the best decision I have ever made to go (I'm a mature student ) and the reason I decided to do this 3 year degree was purely down to the inspiration and knowledge I got from you and your channel. Really. I couldn't praise you enough for sharing your time and knowledge with all us subscriber's (and answering my questions!). Thank you so much. Long may you continue down this wonderful path of RUclips you have chosen and I hope your channel continues to grow. Thanks again.
I'm primarily a bass player and I've been mixing my own bass tracks for years - always with a cloud of uncertainty and all too often not getting the results I want. With this guidance from Warren the clouds are gone - nothing but blue skies! I owe you a pint, sir - thank you so much!
“These bass groups go to (bus) 11” -Nigel from “Spinal Tap” (@10mins) Love that hpf/lpf on separate copied tracks trick.. effectively seems like you’re manually setting up multi-band compressor.. and as always, thanks for the content, Warren & Co.!
I had a really difficult time mixing my bass guitar and making them sound consistent most of my answers to my problems were there in this video, thank you
A phenomenal tone building lesson for all bassists and producers! Bassists should be able to communicate these concepts to the engineers and producers clearly.
Man, I'm mixing bass guitar for the first time for my LP and this video saved my life. I really didn't know where to turn to make the bass sound good with the rest of the tracks. Thank you!
cheers, I actually managed to fix my bass in the mix with this video! I didnt use so much compression, neither the 3rd track because it's actually a ballad but splitting H and L was a great tip.
I love how capable of explaining without stepping on toes you are; because when it comes to talking about changing something about ART things can get extremely touchy.
Oh my goodness, this is GOLD! I followed your steps, and I never knew my bass could sound so good! The mids bring out the sheen, that "grain" we hear like when we strike a low note on a piano. And the bottom just BLOOMS - it's got that rubbery heft I love to hear. I can mix the two to suit the tune - just incredible. Thank you, Warren!
Best video on the Internet… I’m guessing bass is the hardest instrument to mix because it’s pretty unique from all other instruments. It’s pitch is heard, it changes pitch, and its energy is felt…you can literally feel the low rumbling with your body. No other instrument can claim all three of those qualities. The kick is heard and felt but it doesn’t change pitch. Guitars are heard and change pitch but they’re not felt, same with vocals and keyboards. To keep the base’s energy consistent, it has to be processed in parallel…almost like two separate instruments. You can’t have it’s low-end power fading/woofing out, but you can’t lose the dynamics of its upper range either.
That has made a massive difference with my bass. I always used a DI Bass and a duplicated track for an amp model. But this way has made a difference. Thankyou Mr Warren :)
That's awesome man! I'm 3 months behind you in the same boat! I sat and noted down everything so I can give this a go, excited to hear how my DI Bass tracks sound!
I would just like to say thank you so much for this video. I've always had problems mixing bass, partially from my performance because I'm not really a bass player by trade, so the source is a tad shonky, but just mixing it in general and this video has helped me so, so much. I'm still far from perfect but I'm light years closer than what it was previously. So again, thank you very much :)
Dude, finally a mix video that helped and improved what i was doing this. thank you so much. i'm going to go and listen to the rest of what you've done. my mix was improved after watching this. I understood the principles and can apply it. Thank you!
Many thanks for this tip! I love how splitting the bass at 200Hz gives control of the frequencies better - especially as was having difficulty with 'mud' and getting a solid bass sound. Warren you're the best!!!!
With the resurgence of vinyl, I read that it's important to the keep the bass panned in the center so that the needles on phonographs wont jump out of the groove.
Love the idea of splitting the Bass and compressing the high and low separately.. really helps even out the bass line on the track. It was night and day at the end!
Warren, you are too kind of a spirit! Giving away such valuable tricks for free!. I've used similar ideas before, but usually i'm so worried about bringing up too much noise in the mix, so i tend to avoid compression as much as i can and do manual volume automations instead or melodyne (not that anybody would probably ever notice the difference!!). Anyways thanks for the biggest part of this channel, and that is the inspiration!
I've seen a lot of videos that discuss the split DI method of mixing bass, but this is the first I've come across that really explains how to do it. Thank you.
Followed this link because my track needs a bass guitar and i've never mixed one before. Several watch throughs later, i'm very happy with the result. Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)
I wish I'd seen this before. I always struggled getting the bass consistent and this is the best (easiest) way I've seen of doing it. Time to go back over my old tracks and see how much I can improve them!
This is brilliant Warren! This has totally transformed my bass mixing and given my mixes the low end depth and definition I've been trying to accomplish. Cheers!
I've followed your bass guitar, guitar, drums, vocals mixing tips. Thanks so much for mixing my songs! Lmao Hear me out folks: this is the BEST channel on RUclips on sound engineering, and I've taken my first course in real life more than ten years ago for a couple of years. Because of my old CPU I had to create two/three submixes per song but boy, *you should hear the goddamn results*
i´m currently dealing with this kind of bass performance, i spend hours trying to adjust the sound of it but my ears were just tired and my efforts were useless, so i took a rest by watching youtube, and i found this video on my recomendations... now i´m mind blownded, YOU ARE AMAZING, thanks for sharing
Oh my goodness!!!! I used this technique and I can't believe the difference in the body and clarity of my bass now. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
You're a brilliant teacher Warren and humble with it!. Great Video just highlighting you don't need fancy plugins to get a great consistent bass sound using stock plugins. Noice! :)
Respect from a drum & bass head. We also do this on aggressive electronic synths. Interesting the serial compression I never do that I’ll have to try it.
necks on basses can add to this problem, where some notes are very resonant... also frets... if the frets arent dressed properly you get drop outs.. certain keys seem to be more even than others... i like to get my bass set up and with new-ish strings and a clean fretboard when im recording bass... often i might double it with a synth bass and blend in the electronic signal... also when recording one might want to compress lightly and use a nice preamp to drive the signal a bit.. i use a Great River pre with is quite versatile... thanks for your awesome-warren tips too!
I like the process you used in this lesson. Straight forward, simple & easy to follow. Some people produce lessons and explain everything about the bass. Sometime to much info "one" can loose the direction of the lesson. As a beginner THANKS !!! WELL DONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’ve started adding in a bit of grind to my bass in recent mixes and loving the way it sits...how did I miss this for all these years!? This gives me a few more things to add on 🙂
If I may suggest, try to set the blend of your bass tracks first before you start compressing and limiting the Bass Aux group. That way you won't find yourself having to re-tweak the threshold/settings on the Aux. I've never tried using a third bass track, normally just a LP/DI and a HP/Grit tracks, but I will remember to give this a try. Thanks ever so much Warren!
That was amazing. You've got me really thinking about limiting after compression with essentially the same settings apart from ratio and threshold. In this serial compression scenario the low ratio compressor really works hard to tame the transients so that the limiter doesn't have to work hard. That's how you avoid massive distortions from the limiter in the mid range, which belongs to the other tracks. Am I right? Where did I leave the tracks of sanity? Thank you so much!
I am a Singer, Songwriter, Musician & It is really inspiring to see professionals discussing & showing & sharing their ideas with us. It really helps to stay motivated... And I want to ask you that I will be purchasing a new macbook pro but basically i am a little tight on money, but I need to know that does 16gb of ram will crash or doesnt work properly in daw with 100+ tracks and yeah with multiple plugins, If it is heavy for 16gb then i will go for the higher one. My current pc cannot handle this much load... ✨
When you started to explain the dipping of the guitar in and out of “the mix” I was engulfed with gorgeous visualizations of a clean song held together like a chromatic cloud.
Ok but this was actually amazing, I learned SO much, and it was all explained in such a simple way thank you SOOOO much for this i can't tell you how much I appreciate this!
Warren, you're a great tutor. I've followed your sessions for a couple of years now and your ideas have transformed my mixes so much. Thank you. Hope to meet you one day and shake your hand.
I have been trying to produce my own metal music for years and have always struggled with mixing bass. I have not to this day seen a video where someone puts it down really simple and explaining the steps as good as you. Please keep doing what you are doing and you have my subscribe my good sir!
Made me smile when you bumped up the 80-100 range! Always have done that, it does just sound better. This channel is super helpful, thankful to have found it yesterday as I embark on making my first track with vocals.
Hi Warren! Watch this today and I must say it totally made me very happy. I tried it out on one of my mixes and blew me away. This tips and along with Matt Good´s showing what he did with Pultec Eq on the kick changed everything for me. Thank so much!
I advice non players if they want to start mixing bass to start learning at least about instrument gtr bass at least! The composition side of the bass element and the style and history equipment!for instance when you hear a already rec tunnel you have to recognise the used elements ! But also the playing style and modes!!!I honestly love this instrument!❤
Warren, great video and it is quite timely for me. I'm mixing one of my original songs on which I'm playing bass on a DI track. The low end is wild in certain parts and I found it difficult to tame it. I'm going to use this technique. Thanks a bunch.
I like to use the Waves bass rider, it works great for dynamic bass performances, and print to a new track, from there I EQ and compress, this is a great tutorial
Remember when listening to this that youtube compresses the crap out of audio, so the levels of the 'uncompressed' audio aren't what it sounds like in the room.
Yes, thank you for pointing this out. I switched out speakers a couple of times trying to find ones that let me hear the subtleties, but knew I was still missing audio. Your comment reminded me that there is only so much I can do on my end.
Yes, but also take into account that we are talking about completely different types of "compression". Codec compression and music compression are totally different things.
Thank you so much for sharing this method Warren! As always, really interesting tips and tricks! This is exactly what I was looking for to start mixing DI Bass tracks!
On my bass pedalboard, I put my MXR compressor before my Sans Amp and other pedals because I want to send a consistent signal to FOH so they don't have to worry too much about compression. Other bass players often will put the compressor at the end of the signal chain, but I prefer mine at the beginning. Great video on the work it takes to get a good bass tone in recording.

I’m guessing bass is the hardest instrument to mix because it’s pretty unique from all other instruments.

Great technique! You can also do the first thing with a multiband compressor which is usually built in too, like Reaxcomp in Reaper.
Definitely! I agree that works fantastically! Also the Waves RBass is invaluable! I wanted to keep it stock plug ins that are in every DAW.
Thanks Brodie for mentioning that about Reaper because I know that Reaper and Goldwave are probably all I can use unless I get some old Cakewalk.
This was incredibly helpful, I caught a lot of little details the second time through. One of your finest, Warren!

✨
This was outstanding!! I followed along with my bass tracks in Logic and did just as you did. What a difference!
Love this tip. I now know one more reason why my low end is so sketchy most of the time. LIGHT BULB!
So much juice in this compared to what one might think would be in a basic video. Really helpful and useful information.
Thanks so much for the very informative video. I love the Kick/bass separation! It sounds marvelous!
Hi David Allen Hammond Thanks ever so much my friend!
Yep..once again just great information clearly explained by a genuine expert. Thank you for this👍😁😁
Thanks ever so much my friend!!
I've been struggling with this exact problem for ages- going to try this tonight, thanks so much!
I wasn't a huge fan of the bass until I heard it in the mix... Amazing!
I always enjoy your videos, but this one is particularly great! Such a clear simple strategy to address well-articulated goals. Thank you!
the bass was the thing really screwing up my mix so this definitely helped
Fantastic! Glad to be able to help!!
Thanks for pointing that out my friend!
Yes, very good point. It reminds me of when people nit pick about the quality of photos or 4k videos on RUclips!
Nice. I use this technique but never thought to split high&low and twealing each seperatly. Thank you!
very informative, easy to digest for a simpleton like me. thanks much for these videos, Warren!
You're very welcome Sean! Thanks ever so much!!
Please do a more mixing basics on vocal.
Dang warren! you're ROCK!
great video! The exact kind of problem I've been having recently, thanks for making this!
Jordan Mills aw shucks!! I’m so glad to be able to help!
Definitely trying this.
Great to hear Curtis!
Thank you so much for sharing this method Warren! As always, really interesting tips and tricks! This is exactly what I was looking for to start mixing DI Bass tracks!

BASS
On my bass pedalboard, I put my MXR compressor before my Sans Amp and other pedals because I want to send a consistent signal to FOH so they don't have to worry too much about compression. Other bass players often will put the compressor at the end of the signal chain, but I prefer mine at the beginning. Great video on the work it takes to get a good bass tone in recording.
