Today we are talking about five compression mixing tips! These aren't the most straightforward ways that we use compression. For some of you they may seem that way but these are the more interesting things you can do with the compressor!
1. Side Chain the guitar to the lead vocal 1:37
2. Use a compressor to sculpt the room mics 4:42
3. Set up your compressor like a transient designer 6:47
4. Side chain overhead mics to the main snare track 11:12
5. Duplicate the track and nudge it backward to setup “look ahead” compression 13:44

The look ahead compression tip is the sort of thing I live for these days! I love that sort of "out of the box" thinking. Genius.
Thanks ever so much! You Rock my friend!!
Very good technic; but i think you've forgot to activate the side chain on the comp on the shaker. :)
srakone yes!! Just goes to prove I’m NOT an expert! Haha thank goodness! We all make mistakes! The first part is edited from one take and second from another! Oops
I'm the first to make mistakes. It is the hard way to learn.
I have so much respect for your work, so, please, never say again that you're not an expert.
By the way, do you have any trick to raise the volume of gosth notes on a snare drum without have to much compression on the hard beat? I mean without automations or editing?
I've found a way that i would like to share.
Thanks
I've been following you as well
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why it is called Produce like a *PRO* ;)
That's very kind of you Stefano!
While I know most or all of the stuff in the video, I don't use them as much as I should because I forget about them so this is great instruction for those of us who don't know or have forgotten or just need a refresh with a different angle. Love it like always and appreciate your time.
Thanks Jed! - Make sure to download the cheatsheet! It'll help you remember them! haha! Warren
I did that immediately. :) I know my limitations.
Thanks Jed! You Rock my friend! I hope you're well! Great seeing you on here!! You have been an amazing supporter!
Jed Wunderli I cant find how he made the bus option to copy it over
Jed Wunderli when I try to do the whole bus thing doesn’t give me the option for the pre
Thanks Warren for the Compression video! I would go and do it the hard way and automate the volume of the lead guitar to the lead vocal by a couple of days. Awesome video Warren! I cannot wait to use those comp tricks. I hope you are having a wonderful day my friend.
Thanks Joseph! I'm very happy to be able to help!
Everything you say makes so much sense and is like constant revelations to an amateur like me bravo
Hi Friends, have you ever struggled with compression? Well, you're in luck! I have 5 compression mixing tricks for you! These aren't the most straightforward or generic ways that we use compression. Great detail amazing information
Thanks ever so much Apple! You Rock!!
Thanks ever so much for your support Darlene!
This was much harder to do back in the day w/outboard gear connected via side-chain w/cables… back to ADAT tape or hard disk recorders . I need to start using side-chaining more in my DAW super quick & easy to do. Btw are you using those iLoud monitors & how do they stand up? Thanks Warren.
Sidechaining !!! Never thought it could be that brilliant ;) Thanks once again Warren!
Thanks Jean-Francois!
Everything you show I already know about - but for some reason, the way you present it makes me a) Feel like I have never done it and get excited, b) make me USE it and not forget.
That's the mark of a good teacher right there. Thanks Warren, as always!
Wow! Thanks ever so much for the extremely kind words Will! You Rock!
Now I know how to make any compressor to have look ahead, thanks Warren :D
Fantastic! Glad to be able to help!
Hit Like before even watch, anyone else? haha. Warren, these "5 tips" series are the BEST. thank you so much!!!
Haha thanks very much! That's very kind of you!!
Dear Warren! You really are a true teacher. At minute 13:14 , when the entire "Gypsy of Love" drum mix comes in along with the rest of the band, the sound and energy of the snare is amazing. I enjoy seeing how you enjoy doing your job. Keeping Rock Alive! Thanks a lot! You Rock man !!! Blessings
Really liked the overhead/snare tip! I struggle with the overheads and snare all the time.
I must say, I love this new video series!
Thank you Joe! Have a marvellous time trying out these tips! Warren
All of your videos are an absolute goldmine of material! It's just so much good information, I'm having a hard time taking it all in! That's a quality problem as you say!
Thanks ever so much! I really appreciate it!
I have listened to this a few times while prepping my walls for moving. I know I will want to come back to it when I get all set up again, and refresh my memory of what tools I have. Thanks.
Hi Audrey, thanks ever so much for your kind words!!
It's so nice to see this explained so well. I've tested some of these compression techniques, but I've never felt confident in implementing any of them. It's great to have a deep understanding of what these subtle techniques can do. Thank you.
That's a lot of very useful information which my brain will struggle to swallow all in one go, I'll have to spend a whole day to practice those tricks in my DAW for a start. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.
Thanks for the very kind words Byolegy! All the best!
Ur tutorials are so helpful Warren 👍👍👍

Wow this was nice.
#5! Yes, golden.
This is such a great video
Thanks ever so much!
Love the quick yet informative videos! Definitely going to try this on my tracks. Cool to see ducking the lead guitar and vocal instead of automating it.
Hi Andrew, thanks! I watched a couple of 15 minute videos that did only one of these 5 things, so I thought it would be best to incorporate them all to give people real value!! I really appreciate the kind words!
Awesome Warren!! Thank you, great tips & techniques!!!!!!!!
Thanks Dylan!!
Love these 5 tips vids!
Thanks very much Loren!
That transient designer like tip is gold!
Thanks Luke! That's what I used to do all the tie before I had a transient designer!
wow warrens the GOAT
I'll try the shaker lookahead thing! That's a good trick!
Duplicating & Nudging the track and using it as a look ahead key is bloody brilliant!
Thanks ever so much David!! You Rock my friend!
Man, you are the very best!
Thanks ever so much Marcos!! You rock!
Amazing!
Thanks Apple! You Rock!
Great techniques Warren, thank you so much. BTW, I love your voice on this song.
Thanks very much David!! You Rock!
Warren you are the best
Hi Danilo! Thanks ever so much!
thank you thank you warren !!
Hi Darlene, thanks very much!
I liked that you touched on the relationship between attack time and frequency. I have a little chart I made with time on one side, and frequency on the other. I never use it, though - just the ears, lol.
Wonderful! Great stuff samsound!
Great info as usual from your botomless bag of tricks :-) Thanks for sharing.
Hi Terry, thanks ever so much!
Brilliant tips Warren! Thank you so much ! Tip 2 is one of the best ways I've found to control mic bleed. The only way that is better than this is using the de-bleed feature in Izotope RX. But if you don't have access to that, the compressor method is a good option :).
Warren, you are a devilish cook in the Control Room. A hint of subtle spice here, a pinch of rock salt there, and just the slightest touch of hair of the dog! You've got such a sophisticated and highly developed palate.. It's an honor and privilege just to know you.
Hi Horowizard, thank you ever so much my friend! So glad to be able to help! Thanks for your marvellous comment!
your song at 1:07 sounds fantastic, including the drums.
999.9 pure gold as always
Side chain overhead mics to the main snare... wow.. WHY did I not think of that before? I always hate the influence of the snare on the overheads when we're recording with the band in our practice room.... It determines the sound too much for me.
Great tips again Warren (all of them of course :)). Thanks!
I did once side chain the bass guitar to the kick drum track because the bass took too much "space" of the kick and I did not want to EQ anymore to make room for eachother. So the kick controlled the volume of the bass guitar. Worked fine actually :)
Hi Martin, thanks very much! I stole it from people much smarter than me!! Thanks for all of your great support!
BIG THANK YOU for all that great videos, for me you`re the most inspiring and helpful producer here.. :-)
Love this series!- What is this? A "cheatsheet?" Interesting! I'm gonna have to download!
Indeed! Thanks Matthew!
nice good ideas.
Thanks ever so much! You Rock!
Cool ........Thank You Great stuff.....rc
Thanks very much Shuzies!
super!!!
david jonathan thanks ever so much!!
look ahead is cool... thanks!
Thanks Julian!!
Best channel on youtube on recording and producing! I see you still have the iLoud monitors on your desk. Are you still happy with them?
Hi Simon, yes, I really enjoy using the IK ilouds!
Thanks💞🙏
You’re very welcome!
Last one technic was incredible.
Thanks very much Van!!
Very cool! I hope I can see your thoughts on mixing a heavy metal guitars because it is quite confusing.
Thanks ever so much AMB! I really appreciate it!
I must say that you are absolutely spectacular for sharing this great videos. From saturation, to delay, to reverb, now compression.
Warren, can you make a voice using an mp3 beat with an artist singing over it. I always have artists come to my home studio and say they have their beat (mp3 file) and they want to sing over it so I should record them after which I will mix and master it. My challenge has always being with trying to make it sit properly in the mix.
That's a wonderful question Tammy! Yes, typically when you have an already mixed and mastered instrumental that you are singing over it is difficult to make that work with an overdubbed vocal! You'll have to compress the vocal very heavily and reduce it's dynamic range so it feels great against the two track you're working over! I hope that helps?
Warren, if you have time, I would greatly appreciate if you could produce (like a professional ;) a short video on using a compressor (other than the McDSP models) to duck the lead vocal on a FULL mix. The idea is to duck only those frequencies in the vocalist's range.
Keep up the MARVELOUS work!
Thanks ever so much Reverend Eslam! Marvellous idea my friend!
Hi Warren, just wanted to let you know that I'm about to start on my first paid mix, and I owe it all to you and your videos. A huge help and inspiration, many thanks!! Quick question, do you have any easy tips on dirtying up a mix that's very clean but needs a bit more "punk" attitude? Thanks again!
Hi russin94 wow! That’s amazing to hear! So happy for you! Yes, a little saturation can go a long way!
Cheers Warren!! Awesome tips!! Are you going to make available to us the tracks to that rippin' song you are currently writing and performing?
So we can produce the pro of Produce Like a Pro...
Yes! All tracks will eventually become available!
Warren's song is lit.
the snare trick , I do that with a plugin called " Type A" by AudioThing. Works wonders for parallel compression . You should check it out
Love your vids do you have one on how to sidechain a delay and compression so that the delay sounds less when you sing and more when you stop? Thanks again😃
Hi Tobias, yes, more to come! Thanks ever so much for watching!!
Hey Warren, love your tutorials! Question, what type of camera and mics do you use for recording your youtube tutorials?
Still loving the new title graphic!
Yay!! Thanks Z!!
That lookahead compressor trick is gonna change a lot for me. I know quite a few tracks on an upcoming album I'm engineering for that will need that.
Also I find it interesting that when you use the stock Avid compressor it doesn't make Pro Tools slow to a crawl like it does for me, no other plugin does that... my mac must be getting outdated. Also, you forgot to enable the sidechain button on the Avid compressor, that almost cost me an exam in audio school once!
That's fantastic to hear George! Haha yes, god bless my mistakes! Hahaha Thanks for great compliment!
Hi Warren! Very helpul Video! Thanks a lot. Just a quick question about Trick #5, why do you put the compressor at the end of the fx chain?
Thanks for those great tricks ! I really have to try that lookahead tip on my next shaker recording... ;-) Have a great day!
Thanks ever so much Claudius!
Do you have a video of EQ and mixing drum rooms of a live set ?
There's another very easy way of mixing a vocalist and lead guitarist together, which is just using the same room reverb on both, but give the guitar a bigger room size so it sits more in the back, while the vocal sits more in the front
Many thanks for your helpful videos. I would like to ask you, i would like to try your first trick with lead vocal and backing vocals. Do you think i will have some results? Have a marvelous day!
Hi Alessandro, thanks ever so much for the great comment! Yes, on BVs it would work great!
Thanks Warren, fantastic as always. What's your opinion on channel strip plug ins? Just checking out the waves schleps but I can't decide if I'm better with seoerate plug ins. (complete novice at this 😬)
Hi Brian, marvellous question! I do really like them! The Waves RChannel is a favourite of mine!
Great video as always Warren. Just wondered if you could clear a few things up for me. I have a very similar hybrid setup. When you are working in the box are you still monitoring through the main monitors on top of your SSL? I currently have my main nearfields on top of my console but find it sometimes fatiguing in long mix sessions to be sat perpendicular to them.
Hi Gus, marvellous question! I do both! I have a small pair of iLouds and Genelecs in my monitoring position by the screen as well as the larger Genelecs and Unity's on the console!
Cheers Warren, no problem, after all these years there are still times moving knobs and realise they are disengaged :-)
I do! ALL the time!! Only the 'experts' don't! Let's all make mistakes! I do ALL the time! Haha
there's something in the way you move your hands while speaking and the way you look at the camera that reminds me A LOT of matt bellamy from muse
Great Video.
Im always wondering what 'Schnitz and Singles' actually are?!
Regards!
Haha they are just for the heck of it! Haha Thanks for the great comment!
Quick Question; Are you gonna remove that ring tone from that snare or are you going to let that be in the mix? Sounds like 3-400hz It might be a matter of taste? And I might be shooting myself in the leg by saying this.... But, I've always tried to remove those monotome notes in different instruments... Am I doing it wrong? Best Regards Thomas
I need some help. I love all of these videos when the vocals are already recorded and the post processing info is great, but I am having some issues getting there. How do you set up the gain on the mic vs. the gain on the compressor? And do I want to use something like an 1176 if it has a lot of character or something like ableton's stock compressor? I want to know the steps to get to an equal leveling of a dynamic vocal take that doesnt sound compressed all to hell when it hits hard, and doesnt raise the high end so much it sounds weird? (aka the audio file looking consistent in peaks and valleys) How do you set all the faders so that when you need to raise how loud the vocal is, you're not just pushing that one fader up? Like when you adjust gain do you increase the audio file size, or the fader, or the gain on the compressor? What are you guy's tricks? I have a TLM 102, apollo twin, 1176 and la a2 Uad plugins.
is it better to use a multiband compresor side chain and select in which frec range is gonna be ducked the volume instead of duck all?
Whats the difference between making the side chain directly with the vocal channel and making it with the vocal bus? The pre fade?
On the CLA-2A, what does the Analog 50Hz/60Hz/Off do? And what's the differance in result between 50Hz and 60Hz? i would obviously be biased towards 50Hz, PAL for the win.
how can i link to a sidechain input in fl studio having the effect of the first trick?
