Today we're getting into the third chapter of our Mixing Pop/Rock series:
Mixing Guitars, Keys, Synths, and Strings
I'm discussing the production and arrangement choices I made, how to EQ and add width to your electric guitars, and how to help multiple layers of instruments work well together in the mix. I hope you enjoy the tutorial!
Produce Like A Pro is a website which features great tips to help the beginning recordist make incredible sounding home recordings on a budget.
thank you AGAIN Warren......where would we be without music buddy

Fantastic tone on that first guitar you had panned to the far right and it's verb thrown over to the left!! Thanks Warren!
Thanks very much James! Glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hello friend.I watch your programs and learn from them.I use Logic Pro 9.And even with 3 tracks Logic hangs and stops.Lot of problems.Do you have the same problems using Logic what other people have?
Your doing something wrong. Logic is rock solid in my opinion-- and i often have 60+ tracks all with effects. Your machine is not powerful enough, or you have some other problem.
Tomasz Modecki I actually haven't had any issue myself. I would make sure you have enough RAM. That would be my first thought. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
You should try running as much ram as you can fit, also try freezing your audio tracks, disable plugins on each track too.
Thanks for sharing your insight Muff Evans! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many Thanks, Warren
Very useful. I'm doing synth parts right now. My synth player is great, lots of the parts just drop straight into the track, but sometimes I want to sculpt them a bit. Some of the old analogue synths need taming a bit
Bruce used to fix my keyboards and is one heck of an amp maker. He even has amp building clinics twice a year and you walk out with a hand wired Egnater that was totally hands on lol. Have a wonderful week!
Hi Neil, thanks very much for letting me know the info about Bruce! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
I've only only just discovered your channel, but really really enjoying it. This "course" style, where you provide the stems for download is fantastic. Keep it up!
Thanks very much Tony! I'm really glad you enjoy the channel!! I'm very glad to be able to help!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many Thanks, Warren
Thanks ever so much for your advice and tips Warren, very much appreciated.
You're very welcome!! Thank YOU!
gorgeous track
These have been great so far! Can't wait for the vocal mixing video, coming soon I hope?
This is just great stuff. Thanks
Thanks very much I am so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren
Awesome stuff!! I really like that very rhythmic guitar part (the second part you showed), it's pretty special :-) Thanks Warren!
Thanks very much noisesoundtonevibe!! Glad you enjoyed the guitar parts!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many Thanks, Warren
What I'd like to see is Warren do a video about gain staging & panning distorted guitars within a song that also has acoustic drums and a few synth parts. There are days when i feel like I've done a half decent job on something like that but there are also days where it gets very frustrating, I never get that feeling that I'm doing it right, anyway....
Merci Warren ! super travail !
the guitar mix tip is great!
Thanks ever so much Diego! So glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
awesome ideas
"You could go crazy on it. LOL. You already have. Extreme panning rarely sounds great. Very nice vocal.
I love this
Can't wait to try this out. I've been wanting to take a stab at mixing other people's work like this. Just never have made the jump.
Hi fat Sam, fantastic! Mix away! Post to on the Produce Like A Pro Facebook page! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Is there a way to do it without facebook? ..... facebook is fast becoming the new myspace. Everyone I know is jumping ship. Too much censorship!
Hi theawecabinet, you can post it directly to SoundCloud! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many Thanks, Warren
Aha.... all hope is not lost! Cheers for that.
BTW your recent Q&A provoked a question...... what is the loudest level you think a traditional 'spacious' live (ie live room sounding) band recording can be mixed to without sacrificing the air, punch, room tone, bottom end and 3-D ness?
Can it go less than say 10db dynamic range (crest factor) and not be compromised?
Can you think of any good examples (maybe some remastered classics?)
What is your optimal loudness for traditional rock band mixes? (disregarding loudness war)
wow love those synths would love to know what VSTs where used.
Added some auto pan and predelay to my reverbs to give it more of a head swing vibe. Could you tell us more about the reverb you used?
Love the series! going to buy the Cameron Webb this week
Hi David, great stuff! The Cameron Webb 'Motörhead course is fantastic! I'm not in front of the session at the moment, I will have to check and get back to you on which reverb I used when I look at the video! Haha Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
太强了!
What’s your comment on bass plugging?
I'm really coming to like this Little Empire group. :-)
Haha great stuff Loren!! Yes, I quite like them too!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
you're a super cool dude!!
Hi John, aw shucks thanks ever so much!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Building the Little Empire "brand" here Warren ;)
Nice move...
Really informative videos you have, thanks for em. Subbed some days ago. :)
I have a question. When it comes to string instruments, like violins. What kind of different plug ins would you recommend in the mix? I play a instrument called tagelharpa, which have a really sharp sound and it is really hard to mix overall. Look it up if you have the time and if you're curious how it sounds... It would help me a lot.
Hi Warren, would love to see your Logic to Pro tools workflow for the synths. Thanks, love the videos!
Mark Parson great question! I should definitely do one of those in the future. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing many thanks Warren
Awesome, thanks
Do you ever narrow the panning on a stereo synth or piano or always pan them hard left and right?
Cool arrangement :) Does the band play with backing tracks?
Awesome information! Great tutorial. I use logic and pro tools which to me is the best combo u can use! Write in logic and then edit and mix in pro tools. As a plap member i highly suggest you all check it out and join, you wont find a better community of producers and engineers online.
Warren- not all of us use facebook- why not allow us to post mixes elsewhere? Thanks for your channel- as always mate! :)
Hi Wegface! Of course! You can post it to SoundCloud! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Nice man! cheers :)
Thanks very much Tiege!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Hey warren do you know how to fix DAE error -7400? Every time I try to use a plugin it happens. Great video btw 👏

That said.. i need to get my 1 dumb question in as it has been driving meet nuts from Vid to Vid.. I've waited for you to reference it, use it.. acknowledge it.. but to no avail.. ssooo.. here it is.. What is the Screen on the wall @ thr right corner of the plane pic for ??? lol... And Last but not least.. If you haven't already .. I Beg, Beg, Beg you to do an in depth Vid on Getting a good vocal.. I.E. How hot of a signal coming in, EQ .. ( Please give in depth vocal EQ advice) Compression .. etc.. I can't for the life of me get a good vocal sound.. its always either mushy..or glassy n thin , distorted... and any other word you can make up to describe a vocal without using the word good... ok... thanks as always.. great Vid !!!! AAnnddd.. I've got a spectacular Idea for a future "Giveaway or Grand prize" Kinda vid.. How about a small piece of your time.. As time is the greatest gift of all.. but not in your or a million dollar studio.. but in 1 of your subscribers " basic " home studio.. I thought of this as I was getting frustrated with one of my recordings.. I thought.. I wish I had someone I knew.. that knew what they were doing, so i could see what is actually capable with what ive got ... would be a great giveaway as well a great way to demonstrate your point of how one can get a great recording in a basic no frills home studio... =O)~.. Think about it... ;0) and in the mean time.. have a wonderful day ..+O)
Warren, are the tracks in the download before or after you applied the sauce? I downloaded them and they sound great. Looking forward to mixing my own version of this.
Hi Chris, great question! The tracks are dry as I recorded them! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Hi.please can you help me i'm in oversofisticated problems in recording and mixing oldschool vocals xD. i'm in a small band in italy and we play a kind of grunge/punk/hardcore .. so we want to sound a bit oldschool yeah and we usually put distortion on the vocals, the problem is that we have no idea how to fix all the harshness of the vocals without mess too much with the eq and turn everything up side down to muddy and undifined .. i will ask if a parallel group of vocals like two dubles and one distorted could fix the problem or if there are other methods .. we really aim to sound really dubled and chorusing with a grit distorted feel.. we will really apareciate any kind of help or suggestion. thank you a lot i really like your channel :)
where is the mixing drums video?I can not find(
What kind of monitor is that?
hey Warren had a quick question, what -db level is your loudest track on this mix set at? ..thanks in advance!

For some reason this guys muttonchops make me sure he plays a rickenbacker bass.
There is no other reasons for rickenbeckers to exist. You need the muttons for that tone homie
I have to say, as someone who is deaf in one ear, I hate that type of stereo mixing, especially when listening on headphones! Ha! I guess I will never understand the true magic of stereo sound.
Hi GH, I completely understand! That's a great point! Some of The Beatles recordings in Mono are pure masterpieces!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing! Many Thanks, Warren
this is great thank yu
Thanks Dilla! I'm so glad to be able to help! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
