These were not inspired by the watches IWC made for the RAF, but rather the Fliegers they made for the Luftwaffe in WW2. That is the reason you see the engraving behind of a Ju52, a German transport plane

@@bk8847 I am speaking on a personal level and in no way should reflect on how others should make their choices. I am fine with this. As a collector we all go through the stages of owning an ETA of some sort. It's part of the journey to figure out you're own personal tastes. Along the way we have to weed out and set standards/criteria to meet otherwise we could end up with every watch under the sun. Even if our criteria is to have one aesthetically stunning and have their own in-house movement there are many thousands to choose from. Another thing is ETA movements never hold their values as well as in-house movements. My standards are actually very low for a watch collector. I've come across some who only want precious metal, dress watch and major complications. It's not about purist, etc. It's about having a criteria which makes you feel good and emotional when wearing the watch. It just have to be perfect. I have a friend who never eats Macdonalds. His response on why was, we can only have 3 meals a day why not have the best meal we would like instead of putting up with eating bland sandwiches which I don't even like. So in this case even if I buy this watch, I know that it eventually it would be sitting in the watch box gathering dust.

@@ddogiddogi Actually its both, the IWC 30110 is based on a ETA movement. My xviii has the 30110. IWC-30110:
The caliber used in the Aquatimer and XViii is the IWC-30110, introduced in 2003 to replace the IWC-37524. The IWC-30110 is an extensively reworked ETA2892A2 caliber with 28800vph, 42-hour power reserve and automatic winding. The ETA2892A2 derives from the 18000vph 28mm ETA2890 movement, and is reduced in diameter to fit into smaller cases. The 9mm-balancewheel is supported by a cock and has an “Etachron”-fineadjustment. The ETA2892-A2 is 25.6mm in diameter and 3.6mm high.
This caliber is delivered to IWC in parts in its finest grade (chronometer-grade) that ETA delivers. Then IWC improves the caliber with new/better parts, and Nickel-plates and decorates it. The 'standard' ETA2892A2 has 21 jewels, IWC adds 2 jewels (mainspring-barrel), amongst other improvements like replacing the date-mechanism and reducing the diameter of the ball bearing of the rotor to increase winding efficiency. These improvements made by IWC throughout the complete movement makes the movement run so efficiently that the mainspring has to be replaced by a less stronger one.
IWC does the assembling and regulation completely in-house. When the watch leaves the factory, it is tested for 21 days and runs within +0...+7 sec/24H, which is a tighter tolerance than used by COSC. That inhouse movement in the spitfire the 32110 will most likely not perform better as it is based on the 30110. The technical details are almost the same as is its caliber number. Call it what you will, the 30110 is one of the highest performing movements on the market today. They still produce them but IWC mainly uses the 35111 Calibre from Seleitta. The same modifications are for both calibres. So performance and reliability should be the same. IWC uses 30 percent their own parts on the ETA 30110 version and 40 percent for the Sellita 35110 version. Calling it a Sellita or ETA movement is like calling a Lexus a Toyota.
