    I love this channel. For anyone reading who cares, I have been using the G85 and G9 for my productions for the life of both cameras. I love both and wouldn't hesitate to recommend either--I came from Sony FF and also used Fuji for my photography. These cameras are the first that cured my camera hopping. I do not shoot 10 bit, but the G9 does have better image quality than the G85. Does it matter? Not really...I use the footage interchangeably in my videos. Both have excellent IBIS. The G85 can record for over an hour and 20 mins on the battery, the G9 gets about 45 minutes and has recording limits. The g9 doesn't crop at all, which is nice. The g85 has a better time lapse mode. I would say if you don't do any photography, the G85 is the deal of the century. If you do photography especially tracking photography like birds, then the G9 is what I would pick. Both are seriously underrated cameras and have completely changed my productions with their color out of the box, easy to work with files, simple menus, and incredible stabilization. Not having to bust out my slider anymore is a game changer. The only downside is both cameras make poor JPEGS so I have to shoot RAW, which wasn't the case with Fuji. Best of luck!

      Great comment thank you! The only thing that is keeping me to still not deciding between those 2 camera is the slow motion with g9 is so good like in 3:28 , it's the only thing that is missing for me on the g85 :(

      I'm trying to decide between Fuji XT4 and G9. For travel, product, food, event shoots, do you think the G9 autofocus is reliable enough?
      The G9 is more attractive cos of the smaller form factor, weather sealing, and price.
      But the XT4 looks more attractive for it's low-light (and I can use my Sigma 18-35 with autofocus), but the other lenses are extremely expensive. And the 18-35 isn't weather sealed.
      Although I recently saw a short film of the G9 filmed at 2500 ISO with the 12-35 f2.8 at night and it's even cleaner than my Canon 200D at 3200 ISO at f1.8. I'm not too sure if G9's lowlight is as bad as everyone says.

    • @dotty7789
      @dotty7789 3 года назад

      @@professionalpotato4764 I have an XT4. The kit 16-80mm lens is what I have and I'm weak so it's heavy for something like vlogging, but for everything else it's great.
      The stabilization is nowhere near Panasonic, but definitely better than what Fuji had in the past. The auto focus has also improved, and there's like three or four af settings you can set. I do shoot quite a bit in lower light settings and I love the colors. I've also shot in windy, -12°C (6°F) weather and the camera didn't fail me at all.
      So it's really up to your needs. I would love to get a Panasonic for video only someday. As a hybrid, I love my Fuji.

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 3 года назад +1

      @@dotty7789 I ended up buying a used XT4. For now I guess I won't need the weather sealing yet, but when travel becomes normal again, I'll likely pick up the 16-80 f/4. I like the range and usability for general purpose. I'm quite happy with the stabilization. As you said it's not perfect, but for static shots, it works perfectly fine.
      Fuji colours are definitely amazing. I'm getting addicted to the film simulations. Eterna LUT on F-log is very nice to work with too. So much better than the 8 bit colour on Sony cameras that I was using for work.

    • @dotty7789
      @dotty7789 3 года назад +1

      @@professionalpotato4764 yeeesssss, the colors are gorgeous. Before I had it, I didn't realize how addicted I would be to the colors. And I also have the 50-140mm when I really want to zoom into landscapes. Even with the pandemic, I've done day trips and small hikes and had fun testing the limits of the weather sealing. Super reliable even in the summer heat and winter cold.

    The Panasonic G9 is the best camera is have owned. Ofcourse some of the full frame camera's do certain things better but they do a lot of things worse too. The G9 isn't bad at anything and has probably the best ergonomics around. I love it with the panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 lens, it hardly comes of my camera.

      Hi applejack120, I've got a G85 and wife and want a G9 so the G85 isn't lonely. The G9 does have more CPU power to better handle auto focus over the G85. But G85 beats G9 on lighter weight and lower cost. The G85 is End Of Life so no new code while the G9 is still supported with code updates. What cameras (for video) do you already own?

    Five (5) things I noticed:
    1. The G85 absolutely DOES compete w/ it's younger but stronger brother from the same mother, the G9....as long as one focuses the damn thing (G85) correctly.
    2. The G9's muted color science, different from the G85's, is tough to look at...UNTIL you added the Demon Lut! Then, the G9's true colors were brilliantly demonstrated! Well done.
    3. Your Canadien Squirrels are blinder than coronavirus-covered bats...
    4. Have to admit, we ALL enjoyed your Squirrel slo-mo segment...pretty epic!
    5. Absolutely appreciating the newer music you created recently. I know there are only so many quarantined-hours one has in a day, but keep on making music when you can. Compliments your videos extremely well and being 100% totally original...makes your vids even better!

    G85 still holding up. 👍 It's a hard one to beat. I like the idea of 10 bit for color but if we're doing little to no color adjustments then it's not really helpful. We deliver in 8 bit anyway. So for me, having a lighter camera setup is more important in these vlogging setups and it still looks like the autofocus is just too unreliable even in the G9. If Panasonic could only nail the autofocus, it'd be the perfect vlogging camera all around. But I'm not mad at the rest of the features they do offer (both G85 and G9). For me, the overall experience with shooting on Panasonic is enjoyable.

    The G9 has better fleshtones and a different contrast curve, and to me these look better. It is strange that AF was better in 4k, must have something to do with the amount of processing needed to sample down to HD, just a guess. Overall the G9 seems to be an incremental increase in quality which is kind of expected. And each buyer will need to decide which level of performance they want to buy. A used g85 will be substantially cheaper than a new g9, probably 2 to 1 or maybe more.

    IMO the G9 with 100-400 is the greatest outdoor combination there is from Portraits, to Binoculars, to Wildlife photos. I find animal detect AF works the majority of the time. Sometimes it will not lock on right away but few cameras can from a far distance. It's as lightweight as it gets for a wildlife setup and you don't even need the tripod attachment to hold the camera with the G9 body.
    It's of course not for everything like V-logging though lol. Let's not get silly.

    Those are some tasty looking squirrels. Far meatier than our squirrels in NC. I picked up the Lumix 14mm last month and I'm very pleased. I'm trying to decide which lenses to take with me to Nepal in October and right now I'm thinking the 14mm/f2.5, my Leica 12-60mm, and maybe a longer lens, but I keep reminding myself that where I'm going, every ounce counts. The 14mm focuses rapidly and can be picked up inexpensively. It is sooooooo tiny.
    I've also considered just taking the Sony x3000 and the G85 with either the 14-140mm or the 50-200. I think the Sony is plenty capable for vlogging and then the G85 will just be for distant shots.

    There's no better stabilization in the industry than Panasonic and Olympus, whenever I'm watching videos that I know were shot in Canon, Sony or Fuji (even with some sort of stab on), I can see and feel the shakiness and micro jitters.

    If you shoot in 1080, you can just set up an easy sensor crop function, then you have a 12-120mm range when using the 12-60mm.

    Amazing squirrel footage, the best on the internet. I think the G85 has more pleasant image but the auto focus on the G9 is superior, if my GH5 had that auto focus it will be the perfect camera (for me)

    So the 'perfect camera' appears to be a G85 'X' with Phase-Detect or LIDAR Auto-focus, 10-bit + better Slomo? Panasonic will have a winner.

    Enjoyed your video as usual. I still think you should look again at the G95. The G9 is better in almost everything, but the weight of the G95 is only marginally heavier than your G85 and it has improved autofocus and is fine with the 12mm 1.4. so worth upgrading from G85.

    • @kwchalky02

      @@cameraconspiracies if you can live with the extra weight then there is absolutely no reason. You were complaining about the extra weight compared with the G85 in your video, and all I'm saying is that if your conclusion is that the G9 is too heavy, then there is still a worthwhile upgrade from the G85, although it's not as good as the G9.

    The difference is not as pronounced as I would have thought. After all, the G9 has 10-bit color now, and it also produces UHD and DCI 4K with no crop.
    I suspect we would see more of a difference when trying to color grade the footage.

  • @raizt1596
    @raizt1596 4 года назад

    Whatever lens you started with on the g85 looked very stable. I think you should have left the g85 in autofocus on to do a pure test.

  • @PatrickChapmanuk

    I'm more a stills man than video. So the G9 wins hands down for me. More MP's and focus points, faster shutter speed, pixel shift and a third higher resolution through the viewfinder. Make this camera a good upgrade for the stills photographer. The current price is a steal at the moment too.
    However, for the videographer (Vlogger) I would have to agree that there is probably little difference. So things like weight gives the G85 a distinct advantage for long hand stretched vlogs. I imagine the G95 would be a good upgrade perhaps, with its added headphone port and Bluetooth. But the current price probably makes it hard to justify for some.

      There's why the Lumix G80 for europe and G85 for worldwide (G85 without 30 minute recording limit)
      But for this Lumix G9 it more concerning for overheat protection.

    Don't do it, unless you can exchange the 85 for a g9 for a couple hundred more. The G9 is fantastic, but you already have a GH5. How many m43 do you really need? Next should be a full frame to give yourself some flexibility, maybe the upcoming R6, which is supposed to be very video focused.
