I paid $600 for my first camera, a used Panasonic DVX100B. It was an indie film makers dream back then in the 2000's shooting in "film" 24p 480. Crazy how things have changed because now I have a a G100 that was about the same price and is probably 10x better image and resolution. But theres something special about using a camcorder with an xlr boom mic that makes you feel like a one man film crew. And being able to zoom smoothly.
I wish mirrorless cameras had adopted the "bread loaf" form factor of camcorders. Camcorders: You flip the screen out. Lots of room to plug in things. Battery attached to the back! Amazing, No doors! Hot shoe on top, sure. Eyecup that swivels. Attach a bracket for a more-steady hold. Somehow companies are stuck on film-camera shapes for mirrorless.
As an Olympus shooter, I have been looking for a second camera to do event work. The image doesn't need to be super cinematic. It just needs to look decent, keep everything in focus, and run for a long time. This is where camcorders really shine. And the 1" type sensor means you can get some shallow depth of field, unlike the older 1/4" or 1/3" sensors on camcorders before. With phase-detect autofocus, it does feel like a sweet spot. I have even been looking at some older 1080p camcorders with those really small sensors because you can find them dirt cheap on eBay ($300 or less), and some of the prosumer models are halfway decent. Again, not trying to make a Hollywood picture but capture, say, a wedding.
This will be a great camera for shooting sports. You can't really compare a camcorder to a pocket-sized cinema camera... but I see your frustration. I too would like a larger sensor, affordable camcorder, with a massive zoom range and outstanding low-light performance.
Event videographer definitely need that insanely long recording time. And no event videographer need toneh, in events you want to show everything. Long zoom definitely works in favor too. That thing weight like what? 2kg? That's insanely light. I can see that thing become really popular with event organizers and even some youtubers . Not all youtubers like toneh. Big car channels, lifestyle channels, journalism channels would love this thing.
They still perform a valuable service for videos that can be stationary and run for long periods of time, such as church services, which is what I use them for. They don't overheat, they run for ever, and are solid performers.
@@davefink2326 Because it's the same technology they used 10 years before you bought yours. That is Kasey's point - when are they going to give us a FF camcorder?
@@SystemParanoiaTo be fair, the NEX-VG line was never true camcorders - just terrible mirrorless cameras in bulky bodies that remotely resembled ENG cameras (if not cinema cams)
I used a camcorder for years, but also dragged along a Canon DSLR, And a Sony Handycam for walking around outside. Now I use the Sony A&SIII but its too heavy for selfie vlogging, so I am trying my smartphone + the Sony for sound.
I’m surprised that you never got a Sony AX53. It’s basically an X3000 on steroids. It has a 30X zoom lens with BOSS, which is about 26mm to 800mm, and it has a Zeiss lens.
Zoomy camcorders are minivans. Mirrorless are a 2-seater sports car, cinema cameras are exotic supercars. Minivans aren't sexy but if you need to pick up the kids, get groceries, go to Home Depot, and not stop at every gas station along the way, you're not grabbing the keys to your Miata.
I always tell professional cam ops “more people need a camcorder than they realize.” One camera that can do everything the moment you turn it on is a great tool that few people own nowadays.
I feel you so bad !! I've been searching for a compact yet good camcorder as i don't want to carry my a7s iii with me, you know something lighter... and cheaper lol but reality is they are SO expensive and for what quality ? I've looked at the Canon XA70 (that one has a 1" sensor compared to the xa60 and 65 which have an even smaller sensor lmao, the 75 has sdi which i dont need) but that's like 1850~ ish euro or the Panasonic x2000, even cheaper at around 1,6k but honestly. It's 1. still to big for my taste, second, that tiny a$$ sensor, no separation, no low light capability (i know, i'm spoiled with the dual gain from a7s iii) but i don't even need a 247238 gazilion times zoom. So i bought the sony cx405 for fun, very tiny, best stab, for what it is and from that year good quality. i paid like 230 euro for it. I feel like that we wont find what we are looking for in a camcorder. Your x3000 still blows most of it lmao Now i started to look into small, compact photography cameras, i want some film sims. At first i was like either ricoh gr iii or the x100vi but then i thought it would be more fun to be able to change lenses and i think i would go for an updated version of the xe4, which is supposed to come next year. Annnnyyway, thanks for coming to my tedtalk, love u kasey, love your videos, much love
With a range like that, it would be great for wildlife too. I just hope they release a consumer version, because their 2kg semipro offering is way too heavy and expensive
I like holding the action cameras from the bottom with my fingers on the sides with no selfie stick. I find it's super easy to vlog that way and you can easily point it to things. Plus it's super wide so a selfie stick really isn't necessary.
If you worked as a cameraman for television, you would have a different opinion about this type of system cameras. Yesterday I had a live broadcast of a funeral of a well-known person from my country, if I didn't have a great zoom camera, I wouldn't have good details of something where I didn't have the opportunity to get closer, so cameras with a large zoom are very important for our work. I also work with Sony FX 6 and I can't imagine how awkward a 400mm zoom would be for something like that! ? Sorry for my bad Eng.
@@cameraconspiracies I've tried them all and I've worked with them and there's nothing better than the sony pxw z280, especially not when you're working in the rain, snow, when it's very hot and sunny days, when you need sound recording in the camera, because that's how the industry is used to using it , when you have to send the material quickly. Only television and similar productions buy camcorders that are intended for professional use, I'm not talking about small camcorders that are for personal amateur use. So, unfortunately, there are no better ones for less money, if there were, we would have bought them.
I love these comparisons, they do mix apples and oranges, so to speak, but they are funny. Btw, all cameras are video cameras nowadays... I mean they shoot video, right. Some of them are photo cameras also, though... Anyways, as a broadcast and news cameraman, let me tell you that the best camera, sorry camcorder, for me is (in that segment, not counting those big 450s or 750s) z280 with... 1/2 inch sensor (albeit 3 of them). Oh, and... when shooting news I really don't care for the Toneh that much. What I do care about is variable ND, f2 lens at all focal lenghts, xlr inputs, streaming capabilities, sdi connectors, and the zoom range that allows me to shoot quite the distance from the angry police or rioters or flying stones. And, even the F12 sensitivity isn't that bad either...
Panasonic HC-X1500 is such a good example. One part loves it - a wonderful lens, great video quality - but soooo many unbearable UX problems for 2024. No USB-C, no bluetooth remote connectivity. You can't set white balance manually without setting the camera to fully manual. No app.
Still some (pro and consumer ones) on the Sony website. Some of the footage I've seen (from the typical-looking new consumer ones, now with 4K and 1-inch sensors) looked really good and have lots of zoom. But they still look quite ancient.
Camcorders, well at least ones with the options you mention, aren't made to be on the go anymore like the old sony digital 8 etc... they are built to be plopped down on a tripod on set. IMO the pocket 3 or a phone, are modern camcorders.
I still don't get the equivalency stuff all the way, so f/2.8 on a 1" sensor only lets enough light in to compare to the exposure of f/7.1 of full frame, but then IRL my experience doesn't match that. The iso and shutter values don't really change, background blur does(but that's about perspective and distance to subject too), but the amount of light doesn't and I just end up lost. In fact I can often use lower ISO on my 1" compact than my Full Frame camera, because I can have the whole subject in focus at f/1.8 where on my full frame I have to stop down to f/3.5 or so.
My first "real" camcorder was a sony NEXVG10 which has a lame sensor but has interchangeable lenses. I then switched to mirrorless to get better specs. The biggest annoyance about my VG10 was it shot in 30p not 24p so that's why I got in the Sony mirrorless game.
The epicness of roasting a 6000 dollar camera, dropping a sick Deep House track, with impressive footage shot on a 600 dollar camera. That, is why we are subscribed lol😅
its only the sensor thats meh, also if they gave it dci they could market it as a super16 cinema camera. i wish more people made good super 16 stuff because you dont really need shallow depth of field. just good dynamic range and a fast readout.
Rolling shutter on that thing seems nasty too. Oh... on another note, see if you can get the DJI Focus Pro to test with your Black Magic. Think it will blow your mind. That AI LiDAR focus monster is amazing!
Ok, the Sony Z200 has a 1-inch sensor, 20 mpix for only 4k, costs 6200 bags (Sony is expensive), etc.. while we have many cameras with m4/3, aps-c, full frame sensors, with prices from 1600 dollars up but more ecomic than the Sony Z200. But I have to say that you can keep the Z200 on for hours without overheating, use mic xlr, you can stream or live video, it has electronically variable ND automatically. In short, it's a compact ENG camcorder. A system other than a hybrid camera.
@@clabart I've shot on cx350... it is not a good camera. Actually, I would never buy z200 (I'd rather get z280 even though it's quite older) but the variable nd (I've used it on z280 and fx9) probably itself worths those 1500 more... even with that ugh 2.8-4.5 two ring lens and even it cannot be worse than a cx350's lens.
Panasonic DVX 100 was a state of the art camcorder. James Longley filmed his documentary Iraq in Fragments with it. It had a Leica and the footage out of it was cinematic. I almost bought it. Vincent Laforet and Philip Bloom steered me away from it and other camcorders. I still went with camcorder style cine cams. Starting with Sony FS100, then 700, then FS7. Now I shoot Venice. Cannot tell you how much fun it is to have a 'proper' camera. Although, I love my A7s series:)
I used a DVX100 and 100b in 2005. They were mini DV. Once the HVX200 from Panasonic came out with HD DIGITAL cards we never again used the DVX100. Ever, ever again. In 2005 we just.... stopped.
It completely depends on the type of work you do and the budget of the production. If you're a vlogger, a small mirrorless with a wide angle lens on a small gimbal is perfect. "Camcorder" types are perfect for news, sports broadcast, corporate conferences, sometimes documentary R&G... anything where you value the flexibility of a massive zoom range over the blurriest possible background, because you have to get the shot RIGHT NOW and you don't have 3 minutes to futz about switching lenses. I use camcorder types along with FX6's and an FX3. If the client has the budget, such as NFL or World Cup, then you can take cinema bodies and rig them on massive box lenses to get the best cinema quality along with the yuge zoom range, but most of us don't have $200,000 to spend on a single camera set up.
1 inch sensor,24-480,built in ND filters,4 k 25/p or 1080/50p, mic input, headphone output, peaking, zebras, histogram, raw photos, mirrorless,,, that's a panasonic FZ2000, had one for years, great all round camera.
24- 480 in 4K !?? You ar crazy ... 36mm (vs 24mm) is the crop in 4K, but in Cinema 4K (24fps only, though) the crop is only 25mm (vs 24mm), completely OK.
@@imageson9297 No i'm not crazy, there's nothing wrong with my mental health, calm down keep your Alans on, maybe i just got a spec slightly wrong. Jeez.
BOSS stabilizer, being mechanical and limited in parameter scope (although deliciously natural and pleasing, visually), it's just too expensive to meet the price point for what was be a tiny production run compared to mass market action cameras.
The VX2100 and DVX100B and GL2 all had magic in them that the newest camcorders just don't seem to have. Even the Canon HV40, an HDV soccer mom camera, had the magic. It was lost when we went full HD. My old XF100 kinda has it, usability wise at least, but the image isn't as great as I remember it being. I have been waiting for a Sony camcorder update, 4K 10 bit with S-Cinetone to match my FX6 and FX3, but the Z200 isn't it. The footage I have seen is just so noisy, noisier than my XF605, and that's saying something. I'll stick with the XF605 for now, even though it isn't a Sony like my other cameras, and hope that a Z280 update will at least have a less noisy image for ENG work. I'm also more interested in a Z90V / VX2100 sized camcorder, and also a Z280 sized camcorder, than I am a Z190 sided camcorder, so I don't know what that means for Sony, but I just don't love this new camera. Also the image looks kinda fake sometimes... if that makes any sense.
Camcorders are great for capturing live performances, religious services, and things that require smooth zooming where the top priority is capturing the event seamlessly; not so much for art or fun. They are utilitarian, and you can get good images. I have the ZV-E1 and the old C100Mkii somewhere in a drawer, but for a church service or a business presentation, my aging G60/XA55 fits the bill or any pro camcorder is the obvious pick if you don’t have multiple cams and Operators. Horses for courses! Now why camcorders haven’t been retooled to better compete with mirrorless; haven’t a clue. Seems you could have both if you have the pocketbook and can stand the weight and size of the lens for the focal ranges needed.
camcorder with a long body, 12 MP full frame sensor that runs 4k using the extra MP for digital stab so you do not get random cropping from using that, if I had the money I would get them to make it
Man you ain't kidding. I was trying to find a basic camcorder that just did like good 4K60p, with simple controls but that kind of product just isn't made by any company I would give money to.
There used to be a Canon GX10. But it was too good and they discontinued it in like a year or two. Canon never released another consumer 4K60p camcorder since - now that's a conspiracy:)
Have you considered testing a mirror lens? Sure the donut bokeh can be "disgusting" or "different" depending on your preferences but you cant argue the size weight and price. To be fair, the TTartisan 500mm T6.3 destroys all of them though...
I've looked at specs of other big, expensive camcorders and they all seen to have 1-inch sensors. There must be some logical reason, though I don't know enough about the tech side of those. I have to wonder though, if it has anything to do with the huge lenses that they use which would let in more light, maybe eliminating the need for a larger sensor? Just a guess.
Cx405 handycam The cx405 inactive stabilization mode has better stabilization than any other camera I've ever seen other than a high-end action camera 🎉🎉🎉
I need a good camcorder for live events and conferences...3 hrs non stop or longer...pro camcorders are the right tool...but I wish they were cheaper...oh well
@@cameraconspiracies Come on... I'm a tv cameraman and I have a mirrorless at home, not a camcorder, but "In any situation"... that's a bit extreme... and also not true.
@@sbozinovic Yawn. Maybe don't take that so literally... Obviously I could find a few scenarios where a terrible mirrorless camera might be worse. Even then, side by side most people would choose the crappy mirrorless with a fast lens.
But background blur is so 2020-ish! I think people should use Red video cameras with cinema lenses to bring some aesthetic and global shutter to the local news on TV.
I think camcorders have the potential to be good but sony just doesn't care. I got the HD sony hdr- fx1 20 years ago and it was great for filming recitals, events and concerts. I never once used it just walking around though. I agree sony is just recycling old features now. Lens stab. is very important for a video focused camera. I think they use the high megapixel camera for the auto zoom crop feature. Pretty stupid they can't get AI to automatically use the zoom lens motors instead of digital crop to follow you around. A lower MP camera would be able to do higher frame rates. Its still very expensive for a broadcast 2/3 inch B4 mount sony camera in 4k.

Then you wouldnt need a new camcorder. 2017 and up would do
This will be a great camera for shooting sports. You can't really compare a camcorder to a pocket-sized cinema camera... but I see your frustration. I too would like a larger sensor, affordable camcorder, with a massive zoom range and outstanding low-light performance.
ruclips.net/video/hRv_3MjBDs0/видео.html
Event videographer definitely need that insanely long recording time. And no event videographer need toneh, in events you want to show everything.
Long zoom definitely works in favor too. That thing weight like what? 2kg? That's insanely light.
I can see that thing become really popular with event organizers and even some youtubers . Not all youtubers like toneh.
Big car channels, lifestyle channels, journalism channels would love this thing.
They still perform a valuable service for videos that can be stationary and run for long periods of time, such as church services, which is what I use them for. They don't overheat, they run for ever, and are solid performers.
. . . And you don't ever need new ones.
@@davefink2326 Because it's the same technology they used 10 years before you bought yours. That is Kasey's point - when are they going to give us a FF camcorder?
NEX-VG900 **mic drop**
@@SystemParanoiaTo be fair, the NEX-VG line was never true camcorders - just terrible mirrorless cameras in bulky bodies that remotely resembled ENG cameras (if not cinema cams)
Wish someone made a 1 inch video camera with removal lens. Those 2/3 inch TV cameras are very expensive still for 4k. =(
I always use camcorders. Makes life easier.
You're a real artist. I loved the reverse slomo and I'm not being ironic.
It's too tight. And very heavy for a 1/2.55 inch sensor.
"you are already in diffraction" I LOLed so hard at this one
I have watched the MarkusPix videos, and will be going to the dark side next year. Probably the VX1 for the ultimate dad cam footage.
I'm seriously considering the panasonic hc x20👍
Maybe buy some old tape camcorders. Review them and their ‘80’s-90’s’ vintage look.
Your x3000 still blows most of it lmao
Now i started to look into small, compact photography cameras, i want some film sims.

10:30 Maybe new camcoder is for Landscape photo-videographers?
With a range like that, it would be great for wildlife too. I just hope they release a consumer version, because their 2kg semipro offering is way too heavy and expensive
I like holding the action cameras from the bottom with my fingers on the sides with no selfie stick. I find it's super easy to vlog that way and you can easily point it to things. Plus it's super wide so a selfie stick really isn't necessary.
i love the little chuckle bits
If you worked as a cameraman for television, you would have a different opinion about this type of system cameras. Yesterday I had a live broadcast of a funeral of a well-known person from my country, if I didn't have a great zoom camera, I wouldn't have good details of something where I didn't have the opportunity to get closer, so cameras with a large zoom are very important for our work. I also work with Sony FX 6 and I can't imagine how awkward a 400mm zoom would be for something like that! ? Sorry for my bad Eng.
These are niche industries that have nothing to do with normal people.
@@cameraconspiracies "Normal People" don't buy camcorders that cost 4000 and more dollars.
@@cameraconspiracies Maybe I didn't understand you well , you are were talking about professional camcorders?
@@ljubisapesic2387 No, they can get much better gear for less.
Great picnic music!
Try it out, camcorders can be enormously fun to shoot with. Especially the zoom!
No app.
Was always wondering what happened to camcorders. Was real popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s
Still some (pro and consumer ones) on the Sony website. Some of the footage I've seen (from the typical-looking new consumer ones, now with 4K and 1-inch sensors) looked really good and have lots of zoom. But they still look quite ancient.
I have the Sony ax53. It is not bad if you want something incredibly simple. That is the only reason to get a camcorder in 2024!!
We're talking about background blur.
The cripple hammer and the board meetings are my favourite parts of his videos.
Cam is 4K tho
@@luma_productions indeed, we love the pocket three!
its only the sensor thats meh, also if they gave it dci they could market it as a super16 cinema camera. i wish more people made good super 16 stuff because you dont really need shallow depth of field. just good dynamic range and a fast readout.
If you consider that the Panasonic AG-CX350 costs, in Italy, €3,000 while the Sony Z200 costs €4,500
Your video quality in all videos is much worse than what video cameras with a 1-inch sensor can shoot

Kasey what do you think about the c80? seems to be lots of people on RUclips raving about it!
I already made a video about it.
How do you decide which of your many cameras to take for these walk and talk videos?

LoL, I love the hate. This is a much needed broadcast industry camera. It's not for RUclips influencers.
Going to show my ignorance. Why not a 2 inch sensor. Or is 1 inch all we need to perform in…
I've looked at specs of other big, expensive camcorders and they all seen to have 1-inch sensors. There must be some logical reason, though I don't know enough about the tech side of those. I have to wonder though, if it has anything to do with the huge lenses that they use which would let in more light, maybe eliminating the need for a larger sensor? Just a guess.
