That's the best description. I sold Action 4 with high expectations from the 5pro(disappointment), then I hoped the Ace Pro 2 would bring something better but yet, as you say just small things. Both of these have bad skin tones with AI over-processed images. I will probably buy again the action 4 which has the best,natural-looking image IMO. Also, I can't wait for the new DJI Osmo 360 to see what they will bring with their first 360 camera. Thank you so much for your super honest opinion. Big fan of you, here, man. Good job!
Gotta say, you're the only RUclipsr who makes me laugh out loud even as you make really good observations. It's gotten really bad, this blast of fanboyish reviews when a new product comes out. Especially when the product isn't available for days or weeks after the first wave of "reviews" are out there - so no one can just buy the device and test it critically. DJI did the same thing with the Air 3S. Great way to control the narrative. And I agree - this delineation between being sponsored and receiving the camera for free seems like splitting hairs.
I've used a GoPro 8 or 12 for at least half of all my videos. You know how many complaints I've gotten about my video quality? None. Zero. Nobody cares as long as you're reasonably in-focus and colors aren't weird. Audio is much more important.
I liked DC Rainmakers review. Mainly because I heard something I did not hear from an influencer. "This is a loaner" That means he sends it back, like a tech or automotive journalist.
I'm sure DC is an honest guy and his vids are great. Just beware that some companies don't actually require the loaner to be returned. They call it a long term loan, then it's written off when the item's value is low enough. It's a way of not having to call it a gift.
The wider lens is *exactly* what it needed to bring it up to par with the other action cameras. The restricted FOV on the previous camera was my main criticism of it. The previous version was no good for immersive POV, which is *the* primary use for these sorts of cameras. They aren't cinema cameras, they aren't vlogging cameras, they're *action* cameras. Sure, they can be used for vlogging, and some features are being added to make that more possible, but primarily they are designed for mountain biking, motorcycling, surfing, kayaking, mountaineering, kitesurfing, mounting on your race car or under your skateboard or with a bite mount. I just don't understand why some criticise these action cameras for not having something like a 50mm cine lens on the front or a large sensor etc. A large sensor simply does not work for the primary purposes of these sorts of cameras. The laws of physics won't allow it. If you've ever used the 1-inch mod on the previous Insta360 action camera, you'd know that it would make your close focus criticism worse, not better! If you put a 1-inch sensor in an action camera you would need some sort of focus mechanism to achieve close focus. A focus mechanism that would get utterly destroyed in the high impact scenarios these cameras are designed to handle. A 1-inch sensor would also need a much bigger lens in order to get the same field of view for POV shots. None of the action camera manufacturers are going to ditch their main core market use for these cameras (POV use on helmets, chest mounts etc) and nerf the wide angle just to solely satisfy people who want to vlog and who would really be better off with a Pocket 3 or ZV1. So, if a company made the camera you wanted, it wouldn't be an action camera any more. It would be a new category of camera. Now, I'm not saying they shouldn't do that. Something that was the size of an action camera with a 1-inch sensor, full waterproofing, a limited optical zero distortion zoom lens, phase detect autofocus and wireless mic compatibility would be pretty awesome. But, it wouldn't be an action camera. In my previous comment on another video, you said that you just wanted a camera that could be used for loads of different scenarios. But, when we're talking about the specialist requirements that an action camera demands, it can't really be done without pissing off one set of users, or worse, not satisfying any of them. Still love your channel though. Agree with most stuff you say, just not this.
if they can create piezo motors the size of a penny, then they can create a focusing mechanism for a larger sensor size for action cams. They just haven't had enough competition in the market to bother. Now that dji, gopro and insta are all going after the action cam market I think it's only a matter of time before large sensor size action cameras with auto focus using piezo motors. The more I learn about the pro 2 specs the more I like it. Pretty good. It's silly to use action cameras to do studio work but I guess, they know how to make money off the youtube noobs.

I really don't understand how a small iPhone lens can come up with a more crispy and in focus image than a bigger action camera lens. It's like a race to the bottom among all action camera manufacturers now. Let us see how bad they can make their products!

Something else you can add to your anti-shilltuber criticism: If you look at 5 different reviews, you end up with 7 different results. So, most of the sponsored ones praise the camera, but the pictures are so different for all of them, as if they hadn't used the same model. This was definitely different, for example, when they introduced the Osmo Pocket 3, which I love as much as you do.

Good review Kasey. Did you catch the Irene Rudnyk review of this camera where she shot mostly photos but some video at night? It was a decent honest review and it struggled to stay in focus at night and she seemed to hate the color the camera produced. Its worth a watch.

It's obviously a sponsored video and not matter how much they say they are giving unbiased opinions, they're not. I use these action cameras for actual action sports for my RUclips channel (specifically downhill mountain biking) so that's the type of performance I'm looking for. I don't use them for vlogging which is why I get frustrated that they add vlogging features to them, but I get that they need to increase their reach. The total addressable market is large and they need to try and break into it. But I do really hate that mountain bike RUclipsrs that I really like partake in these sham reviews.
I shoot with the Pocket 3, have two DJI Mic 2 transmitters and the receiver. But, I recently ordered the Ace Pro 2. For instances where I would choose an action cam over the Pocket 3, such as at the beach, snorkeling, hiking, walking/running, etc. I'd prefer to use the on-board audio so I don't have to hassle with any mics or worry about dropping them or getting water on them. Of the three, the on-board audio on the Ace Pro sounds the best. Most other situations, I'll use the Pocket 3 which are all going to be situations where I won't mind connecting my DJI Mic 2's. Being able to match color grade with D-Log M isn't a concern for me, but the fact you lose face priority exposure in D-Log M is. I also never use more than one camera for the same scene. I might shoot different scenes with different cameras but I never find the color changes distracting enough as long as the white balance and exposure aren't too far off. I think your brain expects there to be color shifts in different scenes and lighting environments anyway. I'll be doing some comparison videos when the Ace Pro arrives with my Pocket 3, my GoPro Hero 10, my Pixel 8 pro, and MAYBE my A6700.
Agree with you completely on all of this. The Pocket 3 is the best actionesque cam out there. I tried them all including the original Ace Pro. 8 bit sucks, my Hero 11 Mini was better than the Ace Pro. Funny thing is that my Insta360 cam in 2020 had a 1 inch sensor and 5.7K. Also, I tested the Pocket 3 against my iPhone 14 Pro and it was no contest. The iPhone blew away the Pocket 3
I agree. The “leaked rumours” made it sound like it was going to kill the other action cams. Doesn’t have 10 bit. Battery life only a couple hours. Its HDR looks like a kids cartoon. I’m getting real tired of these monumental incremental “cripple it enough so we have annual releases to make our shareholders happy” BS. I was really excited for this because I already have 2 insta360 cams and I like their ecosystem better than the other companies. But this was a weak release. It’s like they’re all in bed with each other.
I bought the Action 5 Pro a couple weeks ago and don’t regret it one bit. The D-Log M with sharpness and noise reduction set to -2,-2 looks so good. I was afraid the Ace Pro 2 would be much better but it’s not nearly what it was hyped to be.

The irony is your honest assessments should be attracting any manufacturer that is truly confident about what they have to offer. They need to be able to take criticism as much as praise. And maybe if they did, we'd see the features & fixes so many of us are waiting for. Instead they listen to a bunch of people they essentially "pay off" to say nice things about their products so they can get more free products.
The cameras that Kasey likes are the ones that are perfect for his use case. I have rarely seen him vlog in inclement weather or shoot travelogues apart from the old Thailand videos. I am subscribed to an Indian RUclipsr who climbs mountains in the monsoons. For him, his GoPro is the best choice. An action camera is perfect for him. Each of his videos have more than hundreds of thousands of likes and he has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Content matters ! Audio matters !

Listen, I try to be as transparent as possible in my videos and I do actually criticize the camera (weird blurring in low light, close focus still an issue but largely better) hopefully you watched the whole thing? unlike a lot of the other folks who were actually paid. Per FTC guidelines there is actually a difference between a sponsorship and a "gifted product". If you're given something for free that can influence your video you do need to disclose it (which I did within the first 2 minutes). However, a sponsorship implies the brand had control over the content of the video which they did not. Insta360 didn't get to see my video before I published it, they didn't approve anything, they didn't ask me to include/exclude anything. In fact, when I raised concerns over the blurry low light topic they accepted it and didn't ask me to omit it from the video. Long story short, I'm still learning the correct way to explain things without getting attacked in the comments. But I do try to provide value in my videos. By the way. I kinda like the image of the Pocket 3 but the shutter speed cranked to sub zero is killing me. With the gimbal motion not always exactly synced it looks very jittery at some points. Nah dude, for action we want the widest POV possible. Linear works only when filming someone in front of us. And even then with these cameras unless you can tickle their ass crack they will seem to be miles away. They need to decide if they're making a camera for vloggers (although you can't beat Pocket 3 for that) or for POV action. At least they've graced us with replaceable lens. Mighty Insta Gods.
I agree. My wish for a Osmo Pocket 4 would be a bigger sensor and even better lens. Maybe the Hasselblad from the Mavic 3 pro on a small gimbal. That would be great.

All the hate on the FOV, but you didn’t mention the 2X punch, which appears way better than the digital zoom of A5. I’m actually finally considering my first action cam purchase simply for 4k60 recording of entire volleyball games without overheating. I use a phone to stream and 2 canon R6Mii to capture stills but need backup redundancy video. Doing an in battery test on A5 and Ace2 this weekend for this specific use case and then with battery door open plugged into external source. We shall see. Any thoughts on cam for my specific use case that will give me 4k 60 at an hour w/out over heating an a field of view that doesn’t look like I have fisheyes? All I want is the perfect camera…….for this use.

I agree. The “leaked rumours” made it sound like it was going to kill the other action cams. Doesn’t have 10 bit. Battery life only a couple hours. Its HDR looks like a kids cartoon. I’m getting real tired of these monumental incremental “cripple it enough so we have annual releases to make our shareholders happy” BS. I was really excited for this because I already have 2 insta360 cams and I like their ecosystem better than the other companies. But this was a weak release. It’s like they’re all in bed with each other.
I bought the Action 5 Pro a couple weeks ago and don’t regret it one bit. The D-Log M with sharpness and noise reduction set to -2,-2 looks so good. I was afraid the Ace Pro 2 would be much better but it’s not nearly what it was hyped to be.

The irony is your honest assessments should be attracting any manufacturer that is truly confident about what they have to offer. They need to be able to take criticism as much as praise. And maybe if they did, we'd see the features & fixes so many of us are waiting for. Instead they listen to a bunch of people they essentially "pay off" to say nice things about their products so they can get more free products.

The cameras that Kasey likes are the ones that are perfect for his use case. I have rarely seen him vlog in inclement weather or shoot travelogues apart from the old Thailand videos.
I am subscribed to an Indian RUclipsr who climbs mountains in the monsoons. For him, his GoPro is the best choice. An action camera is perfect for him. Each of his videos have more than hundreds of thousands of likes and he has hundreds of thousands of subscribers. Content matters ! Audio matters !

Listen, I try to be as transparent as possible in my videos and I do actually criticize the camera (weird blurring in low light, close focus still an issue but largely better) hopefully you watched the whole thing? unlike a lot of the other folks who were actually paid.
Per FTC guidelines there is actually a difference between a sponsorship and a "gifted product". If you're given something for free that can influence your video you do need to disclose it (which I did within the first 2 minutes). However, a sponsorship implies the brand had control over the content of the video which they did not. Insta360 didn't get to see my video before I published it, they didn't approve anything, they didn't ask me to include/exclude anything. In fact, when I raised concerns over the blurry low light topic they accepted it and didn't ask me to omit it from the video. Long story short, I'm still learning the correct way to explain things without getting attacked in the comments. But I do try to provide value in my videos.
By the way. In this video you mentioned that Zhiyun sent you these tube lights for free but never disclosed that the video was sponsored... or is that different? 😉: ruclips.net/video/4S5HMf79Iwc/видео.html

Getting a loaner for review is needed of course, but being gifted a brand new camera is totally different. Same for getting a substantial discount, that's still sponsoring.
I kinda like the image of the Pocket 3 but the shutter speed cranked to sub zero is killing me. With the gimbal motion not always exactly synced it looks very jittery at some points.

Nah dude, for action we want the widest POV possible. Linear works only when filming someone in front of us. And even then with these cameras unless you can tickle their ass crack they will seem to be miles away. They need to decide if they're making a camera for vloggers (although you can't beat Pocket 3 for that) or for POV action. At least they've graced us with replaceable lens. Mighty Insta Gods.

I agree. My wish for a Osmo Pocket 4 would be a bigger sensor and even better lens. Maybe the Hasselblad from the Mavic 3 pro on a small gimbal. That would be great.
GoPro 11/12/13 with GoPro Labs is still the king for colors, dynamic range, stabe, and low light performance. Does the AP2 even have 10 bit colors?

All the hate on the FOV, but you didn’t mention the 2X punch, which appears way better than the digital zoom of A5.
I’m actually finally considering my first action cam purchase simply for 4k60 recording of entire volleyball games without overheating. I use a phone to stream and 2 canon R6Mii to capture stills but need backup redundancy video. Doing an in battery test on A5 and Ace2 this weekend for this specific use case and then with battery door open plugged into external source. We shall see.
Any thoughts on cam for my specific use case that will give me 4k 60 at an hour w/out over heating an a field of view that doesn’t look like I have fisheyes?
All I want is the perfect camera…….for this use.
