That starter motor needs a passport, a plane, and a couple of weeks holiday in the sun with a free bar to recover! Fantastic vehicle. She's a beauty.
I watch a hell of a lot of car channels on RUclips but your videos are by far my favourites. You guys are awesome, your content is always something different and your mechanical knowledge is a rare sight. Keep doing what you guys are doing, it's an awesome channel.
Thank you and we’ll keep at it 👍
Oh yes please, more of Als french affliction 😂 I don't know where you keep finding them Al but I'm beginning to think you're the french pied piper for aging french classics 😂 love it 👍
Engine rebuild
It's always a good day when a new video from 6d Diesels is released.
I am currently having fun getting a 1967 Berline, Automatic, leather interior and sunroof back on the road. It has been sleeping in a garage for 30 years. They don't build cars like they used to!
Why have you got only 18k subscribers??. The best channel on RUclips by far
It’s going up fingers crossed 👍
That has gone up quite a lot since I joined, the word is getting out there!
I joined when Al got the metro working 💪 its gone right up since then!
Great content 👌
@@Focusfury05 it’s still nothing compared with some of the crap channels out there. There should be a one in front of that figure!!
@@Focusfury05 same here, I have always had a soft stop for Metros.
You are lucky that starter motor torture is not a crime 😅
Don't see the problem, it's water cooled 😂👍🇮🇪
I had a 404estate petrol lovely car met the wife in it 45 years ago
That noise of the engine skipping over trying to start brings back memories, my Dad was a heavy plant mechanic and from about 10yr old would have had me under the bonnet of a track machine or dozer or some other huhmungasor of an engine holding a burning oily rag into the inlet manifold just to see if the bastid would go enough to drag its sorry ass into the workshop. I'll never forget the experiences of standing 10ft in the air next to a straight 6 air cooled mammoth as it explodes into life at full throttle while trying not to drop the rag lol.
My god Al, you’ve got some dogged determination bordering on cussedness. That Pug dug its puny French heels in, but you and Mr Lucas dragged him into life. Beaucoup de kudos to you👏👏👏👏👏
Great to see the old girl fire up. That starter motor needs a couple of weeks off after its torturing. 🤣
404 Camionette!!! The Indenor diesel is sweet, believe the 404 had the XD/XDP85 1.8 and XD88 1.9. I had a 504 GL diesel car with the larger Indenor XD2 2.3 as a classic daily drive for years built like a tank, miss the old Indenor diesel noise. IIRC those old Lucas pumps had cold start advance pull cable too. Amazing that the Indenor engine was made for such a long time with the final disguise being made by Mahindra well in to the noughties. I believe they then re engineered it for direct injection to clean it up a bit. Various French brands of tractor also used the engine, and they built a lush 6 cylinder version for marine use marketed under Volvo Penta a shame that didn't make it in to the 505 or 604. You just need a couple of camels to carry in the back now🤣
I agree, great engines. I had a 504F 7-seater rust bucket and it was a terrific car.
@@dungbetel There were two 504s at Rustival last weekend, a '78 504 TI saloon and a '82 504 SRD Familiale both in the same metallic blue. Both owners hadn't met before but they moved them and parked up together for display.
Currently stuck on.m42 now for 2 hours so this is keeping me entertained thank you
Was a 4 hour delay. Thank you both, yiu kept me sane!
Spent 6 years in Africa in the 80s . These were loved by chibuku runners ( local beer in oil drums). Had a 504 myself what a motor! African assembled
Absolutely superb episode ! Take my hat off to you for your commitment to the croissant running !
I do suspect the heavy breathing is down to the slight lack of compression and bit of blow by, and pop the injections out and on a tester, see what they crack of at.
How that starter is still spinning is a miracle. Can’t wait for the next upload, thank you
Actually f***ing LOLed at Caprick...
Proper old school mechanic, look forward to your videos, keep them coming.
My grandfather had a 504 GL when i was growing up in Ghana in the 80s. First car i drove. I bet the starter motor produces more power and torque than the engine 😂
Could you do a cut down video too, for those of us with a shorter attention span. Well done saving such a rarity!
I like the hole in the bumper for the starting handle.
23 mins of Cranking, the old starter took some hammer 🤣
Lol she certainly did !!
I travelled through North Africa about 20 years ago and these things were everywhere along with the later 504’s. There was lads putting quarter panels in estate versions at the side of the road and such sites to behold…
Fiat 128's galore too back then. 👍
I helped get a friend’s petrol 404 running last year. The column change was fun to work out with no clues.
A near perfect upload, yet again !
'Quirky' & 'so up my street' doesn't come close !
Geddon' Boys.
You can’t beat nut and bolt technology !!!!
Great vid as always. I love the big grey Merc you have parked in the garage. Classic lines, very classy!
Had a blue one with the 2 liter petrol, Loved it more you loaded it the better it liked it fantastic work horse not too hot to drive empty. Got side swiped by a merc 308 van one day wrecked the van but my old pick up had tiny dent in the front of the tray.My teacher at school had a saloon version as a boy thought it were ugly copy of Morris Oxford, dont make motors like they used to.
The best part of the truck is the starter motor. Great video
Major respect for your determination to get it running, most people would have given up a long time before, i like the Peugeot, my dad has a house in France and there used to be a barn next door that had two of these vans stored in it along with multiple french cars and a two engined 2CV which is a very rare car, i can't wait to see the progress you make with it, i hope that you're mum and dad are ok.
A two engined 2CV Sahara !! Yes that is a rare motor
@@Ivorbiggin according to my dad the man who owned the cars wouldn't sell it and had alot of very serious offers for it, I actually had a good look at it and it was a Sahara.
@@adamweston4152
Jonny smith on “the late brake show” recently did a road test on one
@@Ivorbiggin yes I watched the video.
Another top video from you both Al, and if I lived closer I'd love to come and work for you, it would be like a dream job! Also love the fact you're keeping old cars on the road where they belong and not stuck in a garage or a museum! Can you pass a message on to Fudgey please and ask him to put some safety boots on as I know all about the pain having trainers on in a workshop can cause. Tom 👍
I have tried !! He won’t wear them lol 👍
Starter motor deserves a medal….
These used be to all over Africa. Expect there are quite a few even now as they are tough, simple things.
My father bought a 1974 404 wagon when we moved to Swaziland in 1978. It was a South African built one with 1800 petrol engine. We had many adventures in it and covered 1/4 million Kms over the following 8 years. It took a beating , often on dirt roads with very minimal maintenance and only broke down occasionally. Sold to become a taxi in 1985 when we left Africa.
A North African gentleman's wet dream that motor 😂
Thats the coolest thing I've seen for ages, touch of self lightening here & there plus chuffs like my mini!😂 brilliant vid boys.
The best episode yet the knowledge and tappy tappy of various things is brilliant , and the determination to get the pug going is amazing
The 404 was designed by Pinin Farina, note the simularity to the Austin A60 Cambridge which they also designed
Thank you for that nugget, I've been scratching my mind trying to work out what it reminds me of.....
@@iandennis7836 I'd have thought it was your head you'd be scratching rather than your mind 😉
@@nickb5391 well, that's mind expanding drugs for you........😁
@@iandennis7836 lol
Thank you, guys really enjoyed your work
We had a new 504 estate new back in the 70s one of my favourite cars ever love this to bits 😂
That’s just made my Wednesday night. Thanks !!!
Obviously the clutch shit itself with your threats , well done Mr Al
That engine is a 1,8 indenor diesel or xd88
A 2,1 wont fit in there without changing the bellhousing because it is bigger on xd 90, 2,1, 2 3 and 2,5
The handle under the dash is original to kill the engine👍
Keep it up and struggle on😃
Great vid guys. What a great truck. Glad you got it going😊
Love it excellent video ❤
Fantastic episode loved it.
Brilliant as always 👍🏻
fabulous great video guys
Always look forward to watching your latest videos. Just brilliant content, with humour and old school mechanics. The perfect recipe for a car lover!
Great video. Looking forward to seeing this back on the road.
Another fab video Al 👍
Loving the Peugeot pickup great looking cool to drive around in
Best thing on RUclips, and for the record, I think there is a recall on Parkside hoodies for random shrinking 😂😉
Cheers madam 👍
@6DDIESELSDorset have also talked about your antics at work so hopefully your subscriptions increase a little.
Much appreciated 👍
Another great video Al! I hadn’t seen one of these till today. Look forward to the test drive.
I learnt to drive in a 404 sedan here in Australia. It was a petrol 1970 model. Great car. My parents bought one of the last ever sadans sold here in Australia in 1970. Such a cool vehicle. Marc from Australia 🇦🇺
Great content again fella’s 👍👍👍
Nice old machine Al money well spent. Good job Al & Fudge😊
Must see more of this 404 love it.
What a charming old pick up !
Al - your videos always bring a smile - today's use of the ubiquitous tapping tool (the 2-lb lump hammer) - and the brutal hammering of the starter motor were highlights. Keep up the good work, it is always a pleasure to see your new videos appear.
Bloody lovely old froggy van! As others have said awesome channel Al old stool mechanicing!👍 and all in the best county in the country!
No french electronic jokes with that starter its a trooper.
It didnt start because you weren’t wearing a beret ! Obvious innit 😉
Loving your channel!! Hope that place near your mum and dads gets cleared up soon!! Keep up the fight!! Wish I was closer as my trigger has an oil leak I need fixing
Another very enjoyable upload Al. Can't beat a bit of sniffage.
As your aware Al, there are 7 days in a week, therefore 7 daily drivers is not too many.
8 or more needs attention though.
Last time I rebuilt a engine I had to tow it for about a mile before it built up compression an fired up this just reminded me of that lol 😆
I used to have an old fiesta non turbo diesel combi van that used to start like this, you had to wait for the glow plug relay to click behind the dash before you even dared to start it.great when warm but a bugger when cold.
Another fab video, you keep on doing it ! What a cool van, the scene in your garage, Peugeot van and Trabant in the back ground, does it get any better, how I wish I lived near your garage, I'd love seeing your marvellous vehicles going past, the starter motor deserves an award.
I spend 9+hours a day in the garage, and I relax watching two people spend all day in a garage, I need help!
Excellent video again guys. We need more than 2 vids a week though 😊
Peugeot diesels always seem to sound familiar. Love the canvas cover.
That is very cool AL I dont blame you one bit for buying it 😉
Good Morning Al and Fudgey. What a very Lovely and rare French Peugeot 404 Pick me up Truck this Beauty is. Al, you absolutely kept on trying to get her to turn over, You suceeded in getting her running and purring like a cat. Her bodywork is pretty Good. Just a little bit of TLC and under the floor rust prevention and some welding i would presume, she deserves a complete Full Service and a Good run to make sure everything is running alright. This is a very Lovely vehicle that deserves to be on the road again. Al and Fudgey, You can do this Gentlemen.
I'll wager that there are many of these still trundling around Africa along with old Mercedes and Toyotas. Undervalued commercial classic.
Old 309, 205 had a 1.8td or just d great lumps sure the 305 pick up had the same lump. Decent reliable lumps. Ad love a 305 only 36 year old on the planet it would no doubt.
The gears are opposite to a hiace or hilux 4 speed column manual. From memory towards you and up is first towards and down 2nd straight up 3rd and straight down 4th then away and up or down is reverse
What are the odds that the local auto parts store will have a set of new injectors? 😂
Another great video Al I think the new addition to the fleet is a good move but I think the man needs the extra shed after all just don't tell the wife 😂❤
Perfect, thank you for the video 😊
I do love a vehicle resurrection video, especially a 6D Diesels one 👍
Mid seventies France. Family friend had a 404 estate and trundled around the rural landscape with one headlamp. The 404's seemed huge to a 6 year old. They "upgraded" to a Simca 1500 estate with the wonderful winding back window later. (I thought you were back there for a moment!)
The only way to start my old Perkins engine VW LT was with a blow torch down the intake. A quick bit of fire started it straight away.
Ai have bought a flint stone van a great video Ai fudge
Another great video has always al and fudgie 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love the Peugeot, there is a guy called the village signwriter that does the retro style distressed sign writing, would look good on the pick up. Dont think he is too far from you
Station Road tyre place in Gill, dunno if he still works there but a GDR chap who is a mechanic there would be someone to really to talk to about your Trabbie, he pootles about on his MZ he drove all the way from reunified Germany so I was told.
Good job a lad is handy with the sparky glue gun 😂👍🇮🇪
So! You were the only bidder on this? and with your trouble trying to get it started are you not surprised? Must admit it looks in great condition for it's age. 😁😁👍
Don’t worry if you loose your lighter, you can get one off the starter 😂
That’s wicked I’d drive that 👍
Woow thats soo cool bravo !
Bloody marvellous 👏👏👍
That engine finds its way into most things, LDV Ford, Granada, and I’ve even seen it in a forklift. Does look like an enlarged Trabant
I reckon a man with a measuring tool and a welder could make the trabant fit in the back as a backup wagon
Another excellent bid Al and Fudgy crackin old bus that, would that be the same diesel engine that ford used in the sierra and granada before the 18td unit was used. Sure it was a 2.3
Yes basically they seem to go from 1.8 to 2.1/2.3 and 2.5 with a turbo
Another good one chaps 😀
That's some nice old pick up was hard to get running that poor old starter motor I was waiting for smoke then fire 😂🤣 but was not going to give up as i was starting to think that it was going to beat you al you really like Peugeots but that engine sounds bad god how many vehicles you want to drive one for every day al 👍
404 engine out, 606 in . Proper job! 😂
I remember a neighbour of mine back in the early 80s had a 504 LD. Same starting operation with the 2 position switch and the pull stop on the steering column. I think it was a 1.9, but could have been 2.1.
If at first you don't succeed, hammer the injecters until they bleed and if the starter gets too hot just keep on going, fear not, fear not. "A little bit of surface rust" Definition as per &D Diesels : A little bit of surface inundated by rust.
Absolute bargain Al, I think she deserves a new starter motor after that Al 😂. Would make a nice shop truck.
It’s starts on the button now and the starter seems to fine, I recon I’m keeping it if it can stick that it must be a good one 😂😂👍
Sounds just like my old Peugeot😂😂❤
C'mon Mister Peugeot 😂❤😮 thats now a 🔋 🔋 battery issue 😢
