    Neil reminds me of that one cool uncle that's always telling random stories that make you think hard about things. And then afterwards you go home and wonder why your dad is so lame compared to him.

      Not only can't the right distinguish minorities from each other, but it also extends to scientists. They think all scientists are Charles Darwin and all black people are Obama, so therefore they REALLY hate Neil Degrasse Tyson and REALLY think he's a liar. That, and they don't believe in verifiable facts.

      Yes, it's a real thing. Stephen Hawking was involved. Whether they get the project off the ground I don't know, but as an addition to the whole giant laser thing I read the other day that the Chinese are planning a test solar collector in orbit. It will be designed to beam energy to Earth, but it could also be used to beam energy to exploration craft inside our solar system - how f'ing cool would that be!!

Most of the scientists only have the experience of working with people who are really smart, know what the hell they are doing and know that facts trump their beliefs. People like that cannot exist in political systems which panders to lowest common denominator.

    These nano satellites can accelerate to 20% speed of light using laser, but sadly they can't decelerate when they reach the target. It's kinda like horizon probe on Pluto, they can only do fly-by missions.

    • @RhodianColossus
      @RhodianColossus 7 лет назад +24

      We're good at fly-by missions. We've been doing them since the 60's.

    • @korenn9381
      @korenn9381 7 лет назад +7

      It's kinda like the horizon probe, except on a much larger scale for all variables involved. It needs precision targeting or it'll miss the star system entirely, and even more precision to even get close to the planet. External input is impossible, so the whole tiny probe has to do all its own course corrections. The chances of it getting anywhere close to the planet and then being able to send data back to earth will be tiny. And it'll have to gather data at 1/5th the speed of light! That's so fast, the average camera's shutter time would be too slow to even keep the planet in the shot... So they'll have to send hundreds of these to have a hope at getting anything useful back.

    • @thejeffinvade

      How to steer a laser sail?

    • @sion8

      Korenn
      That's exactly what they're going to do, sent hundreds to thousands at a time when they finally do the mission somewhere in the 2040's. However, they've decided against cameras and instead they're going to use something that basically collects light at all frequencies so that they don't have to focus the cameras to be able to create images at various focuses among other tech the group is currently developing for this mission.

      I dont know about that. While I think Tyson is very smart and an all around nice guy, I don't know if I'd want a Scientist running the country. Who knows what he knows about politics. That'd be like electing someone who is good at running a business, and expecting them to know how to run a country..

      Joking aside, wouldn't the world be better off if we let people who wanted what was best and knew how to do it in charge rather than those who can woo a state?

      Hell, I say give 'em a shot. They can't suck any less than the current politicians we have at any rate.

      Cheer up! You made it! On 9 January 1992, radio astronomers Aleksander Wolszczan and Dale Frail announced the discovery of two planets orbiting the pulsar PSR 1257+12. This discovery was confirmed, and is generally considered to be the first definitive detection of exoplanets.

    The lack of any reaction to 20 Gigawatts from the audience tells me most of them have no idea how much power that is... That is a bit less than having the laser plugged into every solar panel in the United States.
