To me it's absolutely mindblowing that The Road To Eldorado wasn't as much of a hit as it was for me as a child. I LOVE that movie, and it has a great storyline as well; it tells the true worth of gold in comparison to fellowship. Not to mention that the animation is actually really good, topnotch humour, and the music is FANTASTIC since the Danish version (the one I grew up with) had a beloved Danish musician make all the soundtracks. And to this day, it remains some of the best music of his legacy. But that's just my point of view...
My favorite Dreamworks films are Road to El Dorado, Shrek, Shrek 2, Madagascar trilogy, Over the Hedge, Kung Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon trilogy, and Megamind.
Wade the Slade Wilson I’d add Shrek 4 and Prince Of Egypt in there But I’d remove Road To El Dorado I can’t even put it on the list since I didn’t even see it
Dreamworks had their chance to have it's own identity I feel. They could be the ones who targeted teens with more 'dark' humor and raw characters. Shrek and Antz are perfect examples for that. Teens don't want toys of the characters, they do however like wacky characters they can make edgy memes of.
Hey I'm Milki ツ however, if one wants to compete with Disney, one needs to enter their niches and produce content that can be transformered into toys and lunchboxes. That wouldn't really work for teenagers and yound adults. However, perhaps it is their insistance to catching up with Disney instead of walking their own road is doomed from the start. Again, going their own way though might not prove profitable in the multimedia arena of toys, games, comics and parks.
I think they got better as the sequels came. 2 & 3 are better then the first. Penguins of Madagascar is a good movie as well. The spin-off show, eh not so much.
So in that Shrek win clip: Mike and Sully do forced smiles until the camera focuses more on them then it is real smiles, and Jimmy is holding up a clap machine while looking so disinterested. Who knew cartoons were such sore losers.
I think that DreamWorks Pictures is alright. They’ve made below-average movies, (i.e. Shark Tale, Boss Baby, Home) but their best movies are OUTSTANDING. (i.e. How to Train Your Dragon series, Kung Fu Panda series, The Prince of Egypt)
Whats ruining Dreamworks but every "Dreamworks" is replaced with the whole Shrek movie and every "Shrek" is replaced with the Bee movie and every "Bee" is replaced by a Saberspark video.
Okay we can all agree Prince of Egypt, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, maybe Shrek (1 and 2) are great movies, but I feel like Megamind, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Rise of the Guardian are underrated. anyone wanna agree or start and Internet argument?
Wy'Kia i had doubts of megamind when it came out, but i actually really enjoyed it when it went to see it at my old dollar theater, and it was pretty good.
I did. I'm guessing that the holiday patron angle wasn't for everyone. Maybe like "oh a Christmas movie". and that's kind of a different market than normal.
I just don't understand how they can make kickass movies, followed by shitty ones. It's actually kinda sad to see their potential go to waste. They've already shown they can rival Disney and Pixar. The Prince of Egypt proved that DreamWorks could be better than it's competition. But no, let's make a movie about a snail that goes fast lol.
as someone who knows the ways of an artist a little bit.. you never really know what will be a hit or a miss... You might like the product you produced but others might not bite. This is why you will get lots of artists and creator types who become bitter and fed up with people in general.. They start to think that most people don't know what art is.. or they don't understand why people prefer one type over another type.. Any kind of creation based work is risky. It doesn't matter if it is films, fine art, comics, games, or whatever You just really never know if the public will bite and that is just the way it is. This is why there are also other companies who refuse to do anything really new in terms of ideas. Why risk putting money and time in to something that isn't known to work or not. Experiments can be very costly in more ways than one.
Dreamworks has made some of the most stunning traditionally animated movies, The prince of Egypt had breathtakingly beautiful animation, the road to eldorado was so fun visually and story wise and the movie Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron was a unique take on how animal movies were told with some of the most amazing animation out there. I feel if they followed the path that these movies took and possibly tried to bring 2D back since it will feel new and fresh, they would really stand a chance to make it big again! The road to eldorado failed in the box office due to advertisement and timing and if it was released and dealt with correctly in recent times it would have stood a much bigger chance thats for sure.
Makaruu I agree. I watched parts of The Prince of Egypt last night. And it is still so awesome. The human story and emotions. The animation. The scores. The song. Everything.
I still feel so sad that sinbad was a failure. It’s such a beautifully animated film with so much creativity in its story and visuals. I love it so much and it’s not even referenced in this video:(
Honestly it feels like for the most part their 2D animation was gorgeous and crafted with love and care. Prince of Egypt made me faithful again, Sinbad felt like a true adventure, El Derado felt like an Tulio and Miguel had a real and organic friendship and finally Spirit made me love and appreciate the art of animation.
HTTYD is the movie that got me into animation and encouraged me to draw and eventually lead me to digital art and animation/storyboarding. I owe a shit ton to the franchise and am crazy loyal to it but man, I don't get how they make movies like Shrek (a hit), HTTYD, Megamind, and Kung Fu Panda; good movies, but then think making a movie about a boss baby or a really fast snail would work.
Oh shit I literally just realized while watching this that the SKG in "Dreamworks Animation SKG" stands for Spielberg Katzenberg Geffen. I always thought it was like LTD or something.
> 0:53 implying HTTYD was an -A. My dude that film was an +A. In fact it was better than an +A, it was that saving grace extra credit that takes you from a -B to an +A.
Large Voidian my grades have always been written +A. By that logic, $1 would be “dollar one,” and not “one dollar.” English is weird, surely I don’t have to explain that to you 😊
Dreamworks 1 day: let’s make an action filled emotional adventure with dragons and Vikings Dreamworks another day: bees can not talk, what if bee talked? Snails go slow! What if go fast! Babies are dumb! What if babies could talk?
I'd say a lot of Dreamworks is really solid. Spirit is gorgeous, El Dorado is so quotable it hurts. It's not just about Shrek. Dreamworks is a company that tries things; they aren't burdened by keeping to their "identity". They can try anything, which is why we get odd hits like Kung Fu Panda. I hope Dreamworks continues to give me something unique and gives everyone a run for their money. But, with this said, I realize that not all of their choices (Boss Baby) are great. But then something like Prince of Egypt or Kung Fu Panda are gorgeous and touching. I think they are respectable and I will always be excited for them to release a new idea.
And they don't stop coming And they don't stop coming And they don't stop coming And they don't stop coming And they don't stop coming And they don't stop coming And they don't stop coming
Rise of the Guardians is an amazing movie. While advertising, Dreamworks should have focused on the Guardians instead of the elves (trying to make them like the Minions).
Wait Shrek 5, sorry for being behind the times, but I thought Shrek was done after the 4th movie. It's called "Shrek FOREVER After", like happiliy ever after, the end. :(
I believe there is a line from a Disney song that describes Dreamworks: Born in grief Raised in hate Helpless to defy his fate Let him run Let him live But do not forget what we cannot forgive -"One Of Us" from _The Lion King II: Simba's Pride_
The one thing I love about Shrek the most in its comparisons to Disney is that it's the monsters who find true love in the end. While it is a massive piss take it also has a genuine message against Disney's beautiful heroes. Beauty is subjective and everyone deserves happiness 💚
Honestly, I personally think the biggest saving graces to Dreamworks are Kung Fu Panda and Rise of the Guardians, and I think the first two shrek movies are hands down some of the best deconstructs of the original story telling plot. I like Kung Fu Panda in particular, all entries, because they are a true "don't judge a book by its cover" aspect of what a movie should be. You have a f*cking panda as your main character, but the soul of the movie drives it home. A panda is literally the rock paper scissors of the movie, you have Shi Fu (Scissors) versus Tai Lung (Rock) and Tai Lung absolutely destroys Shi Fu, but Po with very hap-hazard skills, DOMINATES Tai Lung almost without even trying (Paper) and this is a very clever movie to start off the two sequels we were to get. Rise of the Guardians might have been more "typical" in the sense of story telling but...come on, you have Santa, the Easter Bunny, and Jack Frost in a room...and it's actually told in a very heroic standpoint. The idea that if you are forgotten, you are as good as dead and powerless is very scary and the movie explores just how easy it is to become forgotten. For crying out loud, the lore alone on how Jack got his staff and powers is beyond me, and I'd love to have a prequel. Yeah, Shrek wasn't perfect, but the first two movies deconstructed everything about the classic "prince saves princess, happy ever after" love story, and I thank them for it. The humor is crude and crass but I heavily enjoy just exactly how the characters bump off of each other thanks to the jokes told. Donkey, in all senses of the word, is literally just the ass who's forgotten in other stories...here, he's a main bloody character, that's funny!!! It's ideas like that which make me appreciate the first two (third wasn't exactly...what I'd like to remember, and the fourth was laughably harsh, almost downright hurtful).
A good portion of the company is based off of revenge towards Disney/DisneyPixar. The director of How to Train Your Dragon Chris Sanders worked for Disney until he and Lassater had a fight, and the original director of Brave quit and works for Dreamworks now. I feel like Dreamworks is the place you go when you can't get into Disney or when you're pissed off at them. I feel bad because there is some amazing talent put into these films, the animation for the most part has been phenomenal, but everything coming together is sloppy. I used to really hope Dreamworks would make something of themselves (and I'm a Pixar FANATIC) but now, I could care less. Really disheartening. At least we have our Shrek memes.
I feel like a lot of the best movies have been made by Dreamworks or at least best animated movies in the past 10 years maybe less, I really liked How To Train Your Dragon 1 and 2, along with Kung Fu Panda 1 (2 and 3 are only ok.)
I do like some of dreamworks films mostly there old stuff like Sinbad, The road to Eldorado, Prince of Egypt, Spirit, and some of there new stuff too like Rise of The guardians and How to train your dragon and I honestly don’t mind Shrek and also love Megamind, however the way dreamworks is going now with Trolls, Home, Turbo, and Boss baby I am not impressed as a matter of fact I am incredibly disappointed, I do hope they do better and don’t fall into what Sony does with there movies
At the end of the day I guess that eventually something good will come out from Dreanworks. And I habve a feeling that in the future they will make better movies because they will be influenced by the huge sucess of Disney... What do you think?
Their best three movies were roughly based off of a children’s book series. My fourth favourite(behind all 3 of Httyd) movie was based off of some children’s books. Disney: Their movies are pretty much all based off of a real fairytale, in some way.
Pixar: respect the morality in every movie regardless the plot good or bad Disney: the music takes over half of the movie Dreamworks: oh boi, what random stuff will they throw? Can't wait for the memes
Best of DreamWorks in chronological order (minus Aarmand): Antz Prince of Egypt Shrek 1/2 Kung Fu Panda 1-3 How To Train Your Dragon 1-3 Megamind Rise of the Guardians Tales of Arcadia Trilogy
I forgot they did Prince of Egypt. My church took me to see that as a kid and now that I read the source material it was very accurate. DreamWorks did great with that one, Joseph movie as well
The problem is that DreamWorks is so inconsistent, they can make amazing masterpieces like the first 2 Shrek movies, How to train your Dragon 1 and 2 or they can make mediocre or shitty movies like Shark Tale or Trolls.
The Madagascar franchise was my childhood. They seemed like incredibly fun storylines with passion, heart, and fun interesting characters especially the penguins and the old lady. I even had a Dreamworks Wii game when I was younger with the Madagascar characters.
I love DreamWorks's logo. That kid on the Moon.... it makes me feel so comfortable for some reason. Like....it's really comforting. I always love seeing it at the beginning of a movie.
"They are capable of creating great movies and maybe they can turn things around in the years to come." *Plays shrek clip* "Like that's ever gonna happen. What a load of...."
I'm so mad El Dorado flunked so badly. It was SUCH an amazing movie and after I watched it, I was speechless. I think one of the main reaons it didn't do too well was because they had tried to release it when the main character were two males in a relationship which didn't make it through :P They changed the entire plot because of this and I think it would've been a better movie without the changes.
UPDATE: - Ruby Gillman was a box office bomb. - Megamind sequel movie/series was released on Peacock. - NBCUniversal wanting them to rush productions like The Wild Robot. - DreamWorks are about to cut 40-50% of their creative staff. - DreamWorks are going full out-sourcing with Sony Imageworks.
Dreamworks is great because of it's unpredictable films. If I go to see a Disney movie I know exactly what to expect. It's boring. But dreamworks thinks outside the box and doesn't use recycled formulas or designs. A bad dreamworks movie will always be original which is something Disney hardly ever achieves.
Oh come off it. Most dreamworks still follow a hero's journey formula. Shrek/dragon/kung fu panda/megamind If anything they follow they're own formula. Atypical hero not liked by other people becomes a hero.
2d animation traditional drawn out is hard to do these days, and the animators probably quite. i don't see the reasons why they should go back to it, but then again 2D animation movies were actually the best so far. 3D is too easy too make i guess, and can be nerve wrecking to see a lot of trash coming out of it. i know some 3D animation is great, but 2D brings out a lot of the good stuff too see. i agree with you right there.
"Kids want Lighting McQueen or an Elsa Toy. Not Shrek". Well, actually, that feels like the intention of the movie. Also, the Internet mocks Shrek out of love. And I actually have a whole other Theory of why Dreamworks sucks balls. Go on Wikepedia, and search Pixar films. You will find 16. Go on Wikipedia, and search Dreamworks films. No joke, you will find 34. Yeah, since 1998 they have made 34 fucking films. Their problem isn't that they don't have an identity. They have the exact same problem as Watchmojo.Com. They realease too often.
You can put that on the LoL characters When they released 10 champs per year they were really "meh" When they started to put time and effort on just one character they started to make better characters. Just saying...
personally, I see DreamWorks as the animation company that isn't afraid to be dark and serious every now and then but can still make a joke. they don't make their films super vanilla to be able to market it to everyone. they take risks. and no it doesn't always pay off and they do make safe cash-grab movies. I see it as a company that cares about artistic integrity at least when they have a good marketable franchise on their hands. like Shreck, How to Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda. Pixar and Disney are monsters of a company. they pump out movies with a reputation as a family-friendly film and animation company to uphold. so DreamWorks has a lot more freedom. and even Disney is guilty of running franchises into the ground. hell, the majority of their sequels are nothing more than cash grabs and are never acknowledged again after their release. anyone can tell that they aren't made to be good or continue the story after 10 minutes into the movie. at least that's how it was with their older movies. modern Disney and Pixar are making sequels with a lot more careful now. if anyone here wants to dive into this kind of stuff more you should check out shafrillous productions. his icon is a big ol Tomatoa from Moana. he does reviews and analysis of mostly DreamWorks films and they are amazing. he is also pretty funny.

Learning from Schraffillas, i know what Dreamworks’ identity should be and what they should run with. Stories where characters deal with the intricacies of finding meaning in their unexpected strengths they never know, they have. This can be evidenced from Shrek, HTTYD, Kung Fu Panda, Megamind, The Prince of Egypt, and the Road to El Dorado. I think this identity for their brand will be perfect for them and might come with consistent success. This is the most important part, factor, and strength Dreamworks has, and what other studios should have. Identity.

Dreamworks should do movie parodies of Disney franchises like Marvel,Star Wars,The Muppets,or Pixar movies
DreamWorks has an identity. The company that has spawned a great number of dank memes.

Jar of Jelly I actually really like turbo
Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron is another example of a movie that rivals Disney
Jar of Jelly the same problem as Sega they made a game about a heaghod that run fast.
I guess they tried to be ironic as Pixar idk
as someone who knows the ways of an artist a little bit.. you never really know what will be a hit or a miss...
Prince of Egypt made me faithful again, Sinbad felt like a true adventure, El Derado felt like an Tulio and Miguel had a real and organic friendship and finally Spirit made me love and appreciate the art of animation.
i've never seen prince of egypt or the road to el dorado, but spirit is still one of my favorite movies.

Dreamworks another day: bees can not talk, what if bee talked?

@@bbqsauceenjoyer838 ok you're right.
The one thing I love about Shrek the most in its comparisons to Disney is that it's the monsters who find true love in the end. While it is a massive piss take it also has a genuine message against Disney's beautiful heroes. Beauty is subjective and everyone deserves happiness 💚

F. Well done! You stated the most blatant and obvious message the movie had to offer. You truly are an inspiration.
Beauty and the beast already did that buddy.
Thx for mentioning rise of guardian
You forgot the Tooth Fairy and the Sandman. And of course the Easter Κangaroo!
How to Train Your Dragon also falls on this list as well.
Comment Sins Yeah... I wonder why you didn't include them.
How to Train Your Dragon franchise and most tv shows ( Voltron, Trollhunters).
At least Pixar are still successful by critics and audiences.
I'm sure there's hope for Dreamworks. After all, the more ex-Disney employees they get, the more actually good talent they get.
problem with Pixar is they're doing to many sequels like seriously who asked for Cars 3? Cars 2 was bad
kyotheman69 Let Pixar make sequels. We are still getting original ideas anyway.
I feel like a lot of the best movies have been made by Dreamworks or at least best animated movies in the past 10 years maybe less, I really liked How To Train Your Dragon 1 and 2, along with Kung Fu Panda 1 (2 and 3 are only ok.)

Wait, they had the chance to add a homosexual relationship in a movie and scrapped it?? Goddammit!

Morganne Griffin Thats one of their strong points

2d animation traditional drawn out is hard to do these days, and the animators probably quite. i don't see the reasons why they should go back to it, but then again 2D animation movies were actually the best so far. 3D is too easy too make i guess, and can be nerve wrecking to see a lot of trash coming out of it. i know some 3D animation is great, but 2D brings out a lot of the good stuff too see.
i agree with you right there.
Fish eye the Artist I didn't mean make traditional animation, I was just saying they should make more movies like that, with that emotion and scale.
They realease too often.
when the 3rd film was released there was merch that was the babies.
Shrek is the best anime
Uncreatively Named Channel there's 16 because Pixar actually puts time and effort into their movies.
Caitlin Olive They used to... most of the time.
You can put that on the LoL characters
When they released 10 champs per year they were really "meh"
When they started to put time and effort on just one character they started to make better characters.
Just saying...
It absolutely terrifies me that an ad for Boss Baby (BY DreamWorks) showed up before this video did. RUclips is watching me, and there is no hope.
In Soviet Dreamworks, RUclips watches you!
+Qwan That was a great joke.

Don't forget that one term: "Vengeance is best served cold."
So maybe it's more like ice cream...
And i love giving it to children
personally, I see DreamWorks as the animation company that isn't afraid to be dark and serious every now and then but can still make a joke. they don't make their films super vanilla to be able to market it to everyone. they take risks. and no it doesn't always pay off and they do make safe cash-grab movies.
How to train your dragon 3 is coming out in 2019
Shadow Realmer Idk why I feel like it will suck.. The first two were good but who knows what direction they'll go.
Oh I absolutely cannot wait.
I heard rumors that the third movie is supposed to be about why dragons don't exist anymore. So basically, Toothless is gonna die.
Lemon Aids I wont allow this
aerea Read the books they are based on, you'll know what roughly happens
A severe lack of Shrek films ruined Dreamworks, obviously!

DreamWorks: Hey, Illumination! Want this smelly green thing?
Illumination: But we already have the Grinch.
DreamWorks: No, not that smelly green thing! This smelly green thing!
Illumination: (blank look)
DreamWorks: Okay, here's Shrek. Take it. We don't want this thing anymore.
Illumination: We...we have no idea what to do with this.
@@davidhong1934 And they're thinking about rebooting it, sigh

Dragon hayes me still have the dvd and I remember when HBO and HBO Family actually played it every week.
I notice that movie barely gets talked about. It did have good voice acting, I guess.
That movie is a meme in itself, honestly.
Dragon hayes OVER THE EDGE
Dragon hayes As I rewatched it recently, I kind of what to watch a sequel since I want more from the possum's daughter!
Identity.
