Why Are There SO MANY Finding Nemo Ripoffs?

- Out of all of Pixar's movies, Finding Nemo gets ripped off the most. There are DOZENS of clones. Why is this the case? Why do so many people target Finding Nemo in particular and not the rest of Pixar's library?

To be fair, almost all of Disney's biggest properties were stolen. The vast majority of their original films were simply retellings of fairy tales and then movies that weren't were either suspiciously similar to pre-existing stories or outright, obvious knockoffs (Kimba the White Lion -> The Lion King).
Disney just has better lawyers and more money to throw at polish.

There's a good chance you're right.
According to CDC and Merriam-Webster, a defect has to be "present at birth." However, that also depends on how "present" is defined. Vitiligo IS in your body at birth, but sort of just laying low In your DNA. Definitely not visible or affecting you at that point, however.

First off, shark tale is not a rip off of finding nemo. Its a completely different story, that would make the same amounts sense if it was with humans. Nemo wouldn't
I think the reason why people call it a ripoff is because Shark Tale came out only a year or so after Finding Nemo, as well as the biting rivalry between Disney and Dreamworks at the time.
But plot-wise, it isn't a ripoff.
That’s the thing, they could be humans but they’re fish. Why are they fish? That’s right! Because Nemo came out a year prior.
But that’s just a theory
They're fish because someone said, "Hey, here's an idea, why don't we make a movie where loan sharks are the antagonists, but we also make them literal sharks!"
@@AmberCommentsThings I feel like such a comparison would be like calling DC and Marvel movies ripoffs of each other, and not many ever really do even though the plotlines tend to be way more similar.

When I was little, my father liked to "download" (not buy) movies. Because of this, he could only mostly find rip offs and b-flicks, like these. I watched a good amount if them (keep in mind I was pretty young). So I have seen almost all if these and e n j o y e d them. Looking back on it, I regret my existence.
My dad used to buy cheap rip of VHS tapes. When I saw the original superior films as an adult I was memorized!

Shark Tale shouldn't be on here. Yes I agree they wanted to capitalise on thier success with Finding Nemo, but it's not a ripoff. A ripoff would have all the things you said but all it has in common is that it's a fish movie.
It steals the eyes of veiwers, not the plot of another movie, so it's not a ripoff.
I agree.

HoneyNut Hostess yeah and I’m tired of swing two movies with striking similarities being labeled as “rip offs” because one was bite popular or cane out before the other. I would honestly like a full review of A Turtle's Tale some time... I did a rewatch of it, and I keep forgetting how good it is, and how well the animation holds up. Besides the environmental messages, it's literally a movie about a turtle's life, and I found it really really good.
Agree it's my 2nd favorite animated film
I remember watching this as a kid and I'm pretty sure half of those memories were from the sequel

Yeah that was really good
I had to watch that movie and the second THOUSANDS of times thanks to my little brother, and I agree, I kinda got attached to it over time and I don't think it's as bad as others in the video
Shark tale isn't a ripoff though. The only thing they have in relation is that they are fish. If it's a ripoff of anything it's simple theme of "don't take what you have for granted and be true to yourself" is used a lot.
I mean, I wouldn't call it a ripoff, but it probably wouldn't exist if Pixar hadn't made Finding Nemo.
Zora Yeah
@@zora1138 at most it would just not be about fish.
I dunno. I don't hate the movie(I have no love for it though) but I always felt like they didn't need to be fish. At all.
It honnestly feels like a very generic movie retooled to surf on the success of Finding Nemo but at the very least it has some qualities: the performances are good, the design isn't appealing to me but the animation is okay, some characters are charming but I feel like it wouldn't be as popular if they didn't made it underwater...
anik monette I don't disagree with you on that. However, if it were anything other than humans people would be like "oh they're riding off of -insert movie here-." Most beings have been done before like fish, planes, cars, toys, and animals of a large variety.
Shark Tale isn't a Finding Nemo ripoff. According to Jeffrey Katzenberg, Shark Tale had already entered production by the time Finding Nemo was released. The storyline is also completely different. Not sure if I can defend the other 'ripoffs' as I've never seen them before. But I can certainly defend Shark Tale for the reasons I provided.

It's kind of a Happy Feet ripoff TBH.
A lot of folks are commenting on Shark Tale and how it isn't a Nemo ripoff. I agree that it shares little in common with the plot of Nemo but I personally believe it was made to steal thunder from Pixar. Kind of in the same way DreamWorks released Antz to siphon viewership from A Bug's Life. Also I'm not saying Shark Tale is a bad film. It's not great but it's not awful. The main reason I brought it up was to mention the competition between DreamWorks and Pixar and how they threw punches by stealing each other's thunder at times. I'm glad they've chilled out nowadays
It's not like Disney's squeaky clean either. Remember 'The Wild'?
Ok, but Shark Tale was released a year AFTER Finding Nemo. They were just "riding the wave" so to speak (no pun intended). It's not a rip off, it's a cling. Clinging to the surge of popularity of movies about fish. To be a ripoff, it would need to be similar in story, of which it isn't. Granted it is DreamWorks animations... Not exactly known as the most creative....
For some reason even as a kid I didn't like SharkTale its story just felt pretty rushed and awkward and i felt the protagonist learns nothing at the end. (Just my opinion by the way)
Disney actually ripped off the idea for Lion King (which I love but facts are facts) from a Kimba the White Lion

For some of these movies it seems like a bit of a stretch to call them Rip-offs of Finding Nemo. Especially "A Turtle's Tale", which primarily focuses on teaching kids about the life of turtles (sometimes as bRUTALLY accurate as possible like in the intro) and the consequences of climate change. I wouldn't say that just because its about oceans and finding a loved one its automatically ripping off Pixar. I mean, heck, even "DEEP" I wouldn't count as a rip-off just because they have to FIND somebody. Even "The Dolphin", as bad as it is, has nothing in common with "Finding Nemo" besides of playing in the ocean. It reminds me a bit of the same logic of people who called "Coco" a rip-off of "The Book of Life", just because they were both about Dia de los Muertos. Some of these movies on your list obviously are cheap rip-offs, but I think we should still differentiate between movies that are clear passion-projects that happen to have similar themes and movies that have been made for a cheap buck just to cash off Pixar's success.
FUN FACT: The Sequel to "A Turtle's Tale" (which came out in 2012) is about the main turtle ending up in an AQUARIUM and his grandkids having to bust him out with the help of an...*drumsroll* OCTOPUS! :D Guess that means Finding Dory is a rip-off of A Turtle's Tale 2, right? ;D
Thank you for defending A Turtle's Tale :')
I love that movie
While I agree that they generally aren't explicit rip-offs, I'd be curious to see what year all these movies came out (which I may look into). I feel like it IS pretty common for animation studios to follow trends, and even if they didn't shamelessly rip from Nemo, they may be motivated by "new popular animated blockbuster subject, ie, talking fish ocean movie."
"Look, we have talking fish, too, so now all the little kids who are on an ocean-theme kick will buy our product too!"
@@secretname3897 Yeah, but that's like saying all princess movies are copying Snow White. The sea doesn't belong to one movie. But I agree, the trend could have been set.
I remember seeing A Turtle's Tale 2 during several dentist visits.

My favorite movie studio is honestly DreamWorks, my favorite movies are the How To Train Your Dragon movies and the Kun Fu Panda movies (and obviously Shrek because why the fuck not?).
excuse me, finding nemo walked so Shark Tale could swim
Agreed 👏
Shark tales isn’t exactly a rip off tho, they just happen to be fishes
Love ur pfp, fellow Samurai ;)
Yea I feel like shark take is a cultural thing, like urban fishes dealing with urban things and it’s kinda realistic in a way. And it’s good!
I mean it was supposed to be a rivalry to Pixar from the things people are saying, but yeah it just isn't a straight up rip off IMO, if anything it feels less comparable to Nemo than the others.
Kinda was a rip off though. They released it the summer after finding Nemo was released.

@@masterzoroark6664 Onlt oine way to find out.
i don't agree with you about the shark tale.
finding nemo was a movie of an overprotecting father who teamed up with an amnesiac lady and tried to resque his son and in his way he found out that he was overprotecting.
shark tale was about a loser who made everyone think that he was a shark killer and that got him in trouble.
totally different plots.
saying that one movie is better than the other is understandable but saying that one is ripping-off the other is wrong.
sure they wanted to capitalie on a fish movie but they changed a bunch of things.
I agree! Also, I personally love the movie SharkTale due to nostalgia.
They are different plot points, yes. What I'm getting at is that DreamWorks made their own fish movie around the same time as Pixar. Excuse the pun but that's a little fishy to me. There isn't hard evidence to say that they ripped it off but considering what they did with A Bug's Life, I wouldn't put it pass them.
I absolutely agree.

Fallout 3 is a role reversal Nemo rip off
Awh, I can't believe you've done this
Finding Nemo: A story of a clownfish looking for his son who got abducted by humans with the help of a blue fish with short term memory loss but can somehow read, meanwhile the missing clownfish son is in Sydney trying to escape a fish tank with other fish
Shark Tale: a story of a broke fish, who lives in human-like society, who successfully kills a shark and becomes famous. Meanwhile the relatives of the dead shark seek to kill previously mentioned fish, but get stopped by a vegetarian shark.
Yep, can’t see any difference
A Turtle's Tale: A story of a sea turtle trying to survive on his own, and nearly starving to death before running into a girl turtle he met shortly after he hatched. They decide to see the world together, nearly dying a dozen times along the way, before they get separated again. He swims to Antarctica to find her, gets picked up by zoologists, sees her again, then immediately gets separated as the zoologists release her first. Then he finds her at a sunken ship and they have babies.
Yeah.... I remember Nemo going to Antarctica and having babies... I also remember the time he got picked up and nursed back to health by a hippie with a talking cat... and then choking on a plastic bag.
tbh, good movie, you should watch it.

1. The reef is actually pretty good, has nice animation and the start is similar tho the end and middle are very different.

Hi Saberspark, thank you for your video. One little point. The one movie you mentioned about a dolphin is based on Sergio Bambaren's best seing novel "The dreaming dolphin". Cheers, Dana

Exactly! Shark Tale I don't think has very much in common with Finding Nemo
Next: Why Are There So MANY Alphabet Lore Ripoffs?!
well, a fish isn't exactly the hardest creature to animate
Yup, and there are plenty of free character designs. With humans, you'd need to come up with clothing and hairstyles. With fish you can just pick a type, that hasn't been used yet, and presto! Original character design! There are thousands of fishtypes for every single distinct land creature. For cats there are lions, panthers, tigers, jaguars... And that's pretty much it. If you have more than one of each, you'd need to give them a slightly different design, to tell them apart. Lions have manes at least, but the others?

I absolutely disagree over Shark Tale being a Finding Nemo ripoff
Even though just like you mentioned in the video, it doesn’t really have anything in common with Finding Nemo apart from being about fish in the ocean
