Thanks for making this video and to all the people who commented with helpful suggestions. So I just got a go Pro for the first time last week and realize I needed longer battery life so I bought the loom cube battery grip and thought I was set to go but unfortunately the GoPro just used up its own battery and shut off, leaving the external battery fully charged :-( I can't find a firmware version but I do see where it says camera version 01.42. I also saw that it said the firmware is up to date.
@@HighCarbAlex That camera was a GoPro 10. The solution was a manual firmware installation off of the SD card. Unfortunately since then I've learned that the 10 and 11 have very delicate back screens. Both of mine broke without ever being hit or dropped. A search for the issue reveals that many other people have had this problem with their GoPros so it's not just me. My 11 broke the first weekend I used it in Nov 2022. Not sure, a bit of a puzzle, ...BUT... this version (10) is configured to work as a cam=>external video source (mixer, or ext recorder, or webcast). In THAT mode the GoPro rear screen goes black as you INSTEAD view from the external system monitors ((mixers, matrix whatevers, etc). ALSO no matter what GoPro video format is set as active format the output from the cam out (using the housing) is 1080p. Again a GREAT thing for live web cam but is unlike prior. It would be very helpful of some helpes with this. Thanks
Thanks for the video. Just tested my Hero 10 - with no battery and only external battery the display (front and back both) is turned off when recording. Maybe its by design. If not expect a firmware update.
I have a big problem with mine overheating. I film in full sun a lot in Florida. Any suggestions? I'd like to make longer videos but at current, they end up short because I can't get too much time out of the camera. I watched your video because I was wondering if removing the battery pack and using an external battery might help keep the camera cool? Any thoughts?
What GoPro recommends is to turn off GPS and WiFi, and then go with a lower frame rate, and maybe turn off Max stabilization, and run it with less stabilization. I image on a boat with constant movement, the stabilization is very busy, what could cause the fast overheating. External battery is not bad, but then the camera is not waterproof anymore...
lol gopro is an idiot why buy a hero 10 if the features are not usable. if thats their solution to tone down the settings then the hero 10 is not worth the upgrade
Like the other comments says, turn off those features if you don't need them. Also create shade and ventilation for the camera if possible. Lastly, remove the battery from the camera and power it with an external battery. Leave the battery door off for better ventilation. Obviously this doesn't work if you're going to get it wet. whatever you do be super careful because the back screens on the 10 and 11 are super delicate. I broke two of them one very new cameras without dropping them or hitting them with anything. I made a warranty claim but GoPro told me to get lost 😡
This used to happen to me also especially if I kept the battery in while it's plugged to an external power bank. I have found success when using only the external power bank and removing the battery.
yes, i tried different power supplies, including a power pack, and the GoPro supercharger. All show the same result. Tried different batteries too. The external charger is able to charge the battery to 100%. The Hero10 and Hero9 batteries seem to be the same.
Good video thanks for taking to time to do the comparison. The only test missing I guess is using external power only (no battery from the start) to power on and record, do you know if that works on all three?
I just checked and tried to charge thru the media mod on my GP10 and it works only IF: 1. You use the GP provided usbc cable only 2. You have to remove the battery of the camera.
See thats why I love my GoPro 5 and 7./ The usb port is apart from the battery and micro card. Now you have to remove the battery door and expose the elements to be able to record from power bank.. .. its as if they did that on purpose to make you wanna buy batteries
Get an external battery with USB type C output. Connect the external battery to Gopro hero10 with the USB-C to USB-C cable will work without the battery error message, even with the latest firmware update. No need to insert the internal battery. Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable also works. Do not use USB-A to USB-C cable.

Such a time waste sorting out these GoPro problems that they should have worked out before taking your money. Gopro will tell you it is anything but their fault. The GoPro tech people know exactly what's happening but the marketing people deny deny deny. ("We've got units to move here, tell them anything to keep them buying") The problem is that the software developers are trying to do everything to attract buyers by offering more and more features but then leaving it to the public to beta test them. The newer the firmware, the more buggy they are. I have rolled my 10 firmware back to 1.2 and it is working fine for me. Probably missing some refinements but at least able to get through 2 hours of recording at 4K, 60 fps, high bitrate and not overheating. @@rapaent I compared the 9 and 10, and i see both pulling a max of 1.2A but the H10 has the screen off as soon as it is recording. With battery inserted, and recording, it still uses the same amount with 1A with spikes to 1.2A. My USB power supply can handle 3.1A And with low battery inserted, and NOT recording, it pulls 2.1A
Guys, you’re genius. I was searching this kind of explanation/instructions.
Great job done. Thank you so much 😊!!!!
I have a hero 9. That records fine with battery. If I try and record with only charger it shuts off when I press record. It’s driving me nuts. Any advice?
I think the GP2 chip draws more power and the power cord was enough for the 8 and 9 but not the 10 so try a different power supply or a battery bank.
I should of watched the rest of the video before commenting lol

@@SteveWB Had same issue. Will take pix fine w/o battery, but not videos. Changed to a battery pack that exceeds 1.0 amps and it works fine. So the packs that limit to 1.0 are the problem
further observation- 1.0 amp Works with the "standard" setting 4k/30, but no higher FPS

Thanks for making this video and to all the people who commented with helpful suggestions. So I just got a go Pro for the first time last week and realize I needed longer battery life so I bought the loom cube battery grip and thought I was set to go but unfortunately the GoPro just used up its own battery and shut off, leaving the external battery fully charged :-(
I can't find a firmware version but I do see where it says camera version 01.42. I also saw that it said the firmware is up to date.
Apparently it's fixed now
@@HighCarbAlex
That camera was a GoPro 10.
I made a warranty claim and GoPro told me to get lost. So I learned the hard way that GoPro cameras are very expensive disposable cameras :-(

Ive had it since I bought the first camera. Unfortunately they don't just replace the camera, they charge you I think $100. Considering that they are defective cameras I don't think it's right to be charged for a replacement.
Especially since I have two of them and the 11 broke the first time I used it, I just can't give GoPro more money...
Im trying to record 20 hour time lapse. With the hero10 black..crashes, unknown reason. Im currently running it voice command disabled..im worried it hears me say go pro and turns off.
Well, for me the Hero11 works much better!

I am filming how the flowers are drying, and I have the camera connected to a power source. Does the recording automatically save when the SD card is full?
idk, i always use very large SD cards and never tried that scenario. But knowing my Hero11, i believe it is more likely that the camera will crash before it is able to fill up the card.
@@mygiguser I think recording Time Lapses doesn’t make very big files and I will probably be filming for ten day, so guess everything will be fine. Thanks for reply 😃 I also thinning to buy 11 🙂
When i connect my hero 9 to the usb outlet in my car it says its collected to cable and does not work
maybe your car usb hasn't enough power
So automatically the GoPro think is connected to a pc. I sorted it out connecting it trough 12v plug and now works
I too had the problem with the 10 not charging from the external battery. The solution was a manual firmware installation off the SD card. Support gave me a link to download the firmware, copied it from my computer to the SD card and put the card in the GoPro. when the GoPro started it founf the firmware update and installed it. That fixed the charging problem.
Unfortunately soon after that I learned that the 10 and 11 have very delicate back screens which broke on my cameras without ever being hit or even dropped. When my 10 and 11 become unusable I'm switching to DJI. In general I'm trying to get away from Chinese products but GoPro is pushing me back to China.
Do you remember what firmware version they told you to use?
@@mygiguser
I just looked.
01.46.70
When the camera boots on startup it flashes a message for a second...
GoPro Labs Beta Firmware...
This is the GoPro 10 and I got the firmware from them about a year ago when I started doing this stuff, just before the back screen cracked LOL
I don't know of any switches including iPhone control. ???? Not a "glitch" but a "feature"? :-)
Forgot to add (kind of obvious) that the housing out is TWO ports: HDMI (1080p) & USB-C (power).
What housing are you talking about? I didn't use any housing in my video??

I have the same issue with my hero 10. Doesn‘t power on external battery. However if I plug it into the mediamod it works. Very mysterious.
Hey, kindly please. I really need to know. If you can answer my question.
How long I can record constantly with GoPro8 while plugged in terms of memory or memory options? How I can record as long as possible? And is there a way to have it record constantly while it's deleting older part of data to keep recording so I can pull out the part of data when a serten event happens.
I never had GoPro before. It would be very helpful of some helpes with this.
Thanks
i personally would not trust a GoPro to long term record. How long you can record depends on temperature, the capacity of the SD Card, and luck.
@@mygiguser Thanks for helping I'm going to consider a monitor camera instead.
Thanks for the video. Just tested my Hero 10 - with no battery and only external battery the display (front and back both) is turned off when recording. Maybe its by design. If not expect a firmware update.
Hero8 and Hero9 can do that without issues. By design means things get better and not worse. I guess not with GoPro.
What is the external power supply voltage for gopro hero 8..will it damage the gopro??
they are all 5V
mine keeps saying not enough power must have 5v2a .i have tried with many power packs and chargers.
try a different cable. best to use USB-C to USB-C.
Has there been a resolution for this? I want to try this for timelapes at work to keep it from over heating
with wifi and gps and displays off, it doesn't get that hot during time-lapse
Is the power supply delivering enough power for the Hero10 ? It uses more power than the 8 and 9.
yes, i tried different power supplies, including a power pack, and the GoPro supercharger. All show the same result. Tried different batteries too. The external charger is able to charge the battery to 100%. The Hero10 and Hero9 batteries seem to be the same.
My GP 10 works fine without the battery. Although it shows low bat temp. constantly
that's odd, i would expect that they all behave the same way.
Good video thanks for taking to time to do the comparison. The only test missing I guess is using external power only (no battery from the start) to power on and record, do you know if that works on all three?
it works with 8 and 9, but not with 10
Interesting, even with the updated firmware?
I wonder why they removed that feature with 10 🤷♂️🤦
I just checked and tried to charge thru the media mod on my GP10 and it works only IF:
1. You use the GP provided usbc cable only
2. You have to remove the battery of the camera.
Do you know, if there is no power to the GoPro (battery or external) does it lose any configured settings?
See thats why I love my GoPro 5 and 7./ The usb port is apart from the battery and micro card.
Now you have to remove the battery door and expose the elements to be able to record from power bank.. .. its as if they did that on purpose to make you wanna buy batteries
Get an external battery with USB type C output. Connect the external battery to Gopro hero10 with the USB-C to USB-C cable will work without the battery error message, even with the latest firmware update. No need to insert the internal battery. Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable also works. Do not use USB-A to USB-C cable.
I bought my last Gopro in 2014~2015 and I waited until 2022
bought gopro hero8 and I'm good with my decision
at least I can record my gopro continuously with power bank and reserve the battery for like underwater activities

@@XploringwithAde I use anker 10,000mha

I have a questions for you. I received a GoPro hero9 replacement camera. The video recording is excellent. But, I occasionally hear "clicking-popping" noises in some of the videos. I noticed you said "poipping" is what it sounded like to me. How do I overcome this do you know?
So that side isn't the battery, WHAT IS IT.!?
Not impressed with the gp10. For the dam price paid for it i find it pathetic you can't record while the charge cable is attached even if the batt is close to full & instead you have to go through the rigmarole of recording first wtf. Glad you made the vid for the work around
I had that problem too. This solution was a manual firmware installation off the SD card.

Same problem with my gopro 10…… i cant use it on my fishing kayak with an external battery, extremely disappointed with Gopro, even called Gopro and they wont even admit there is a problem, so in a few days i plan on using anothet action camera on my kayak and film me throwing my Gopro 10 into the ocean and i will be sending a link to my video to the CEO of Gopro and hope he enjoys it 👍🏼😊🎣
I feel your pain, but my Hero11 doesn't have all those problems. I said 'my' Hero11, because with GoPro you never know ...
I can now get back from a flight in my aeroplane and not find the external cameras stopped working after 40 minutes. Seriously looking at DJI after being a Gopro fan and purchaser since the Hero3. 😡😡
You are right, but what surprises me is that the new Hero11 that i got works so much better than all the others. How is that possible?
