GoPro Hero 10 recording on EXTERNAL POWER FIX | NOT ENOUGH POWER Error | MUST WATCH BEFORE BUYING

  • Hey guys, this is a quick video on how I’m able to use my GoPro Hero 10 with an external power bank for all day power. Previously, I was getting an error message telling me to use a 5v/2.1a charger which I was. Anyhow, this is a 2nd GoPro 10 and I was able to bypass this by doing 1 simple thing: not updating the gopro. The software version I’m using is 01.40. I believe the most current version available is 01.42.

You nailed the issue. I ran into the same issue with the Hero 10 Black. I have all my GoPro cameras about to be sold. I am done with GoPro. They know about the issue, they simply refuse to do anything about it. So, I am going with a different camera. You are correct though in that this is a software issue, version issue. Selling the side door with an opening makes no sense unless like you mentioned… the cameras are too expensive to pay for and not be able to use adequately. GoPro gonna have to feel the pain before they fix it. Shame. I agree these cameras are not meant to record for long periods. For all my channel stuff I have actually gone back to my old Nikon CoolPix P520, or my iPhone. The action camera industry can be and do better than GoPro, and they should. Thanks for video, for reaching out to GoPro, and actually addressing the issue. Thanks.

THANKS! I used a GP8 for two yrs using external battery 5 hrs without issue. Just got a 10 and I get that error message. Couldn't figure out why I would return from a 3 hr mc ride and the battery was less than half.
Just checking my 1 hr of footage today via Quik, the camera was a hot 106 degrees, and it was only on 15 minutes in my 70 degree house. Never had this much over heating issues with the GP8.

It's crappy, but a work around is to just remove the battery door, insert battery AND plug it in, then once you hit record you can pull the internal battery and it will keep recording just fine on the external.

  • @BassManStrikes

They seem to have refined the amp checking algorithm. Cheap cables can trigger that even with a battery bank that puts out 3 amps.
The big thing I noticed with 1.42 is it fixes the boot loop issue and they now won't let the camera run with the old mic adapter and no battery, just gives a message and shuts down.
I have a thin usb cable and it won't work with any USB power bank and it did before, now only better quality cables work with no battery installed.

@@WannaFishAllDay , I have been messing with this and found if I cycle the power off and on twice it works. First time it gives the message, the turn it off and on and keep cable installed and voila it works.

I use mine riding a motorbike so I plug in a USB external charger (+5v/2.1a using Gopro 10 cable) but often I need to 'kickstart' to power on by inserting a battery first, then the cable, then removing the battery (yawn). So then we're good, right? NOT. I click record for a minute etc then if I want to click record again say a few mins later, the Gopro has powered OFF.... So, to restart the gopro, I need to re-plug in the USB charging cable AND also re-insert the battery first (because many times only THEN will the usb charger will work) Then rinse-repeat every few minutes..... Zzzzzzz (Gopro 10 version 1.46 btw)

    • @edwardcullen3251

Define 'quality cable'. I am using a Anker Powerline+ USB-C to USB 3.0 Cable (6ft/1.8m) [2-Pack], High Durability.
I have a Go Pro Hero 10 updated to latest firmware.
Samsung 10,000mah fast charge external battery bought directly from Samsung's website.
I have to have the battery in, and external power hooked up, door removed or use the bypass door, then start recording, then pull the battery out and SOMETIMES. not always, it continues recording on external battery.
I would consider this cable to be 'high quality'.

Two days ago I purchased a Hero 10 and had the same issue. By the way I also used it with the Media Mod and I got a message saying that I need to install the Go Pro Battery, something that is a no no when using external power. Since I was not able to find a solution to the issue I returned it. I have other Go Pros, two 8 and one 9, and I have never had this issue. I do kayak fishing also, what a coincidence, and the external battery I use is the Dakota Lithium and it last forever. Now that I see your video, maybe it was the solution, but too late. I am considering the GoPro 12, but I don't know if it has the same issue or if it was resolved.

GoPro Hero 11 has same issue, contacted them & agent said he had just spoken to customer with your same issue. They wanted to replace it and I want to return for a full refund because it's 30day money back. Sucks because they gave me no answer.

Yes, it's intentional. They are beholden to powers that do NOT want people to have long continuous shooting for many reasons, one of which is financial dependence but also to force people to do everything on a device they can control i.e. your cell phone. They will act like they are unaware, but they just have to sell it that way. DSLR cameras have permanent limitations on shooting time, action cameras "overheat" even though cell phone batteries never overheat. Weird how that works right?

They don't care about external battery users like us (anglers), we are the minority. I'm using the latest firmware and it doesn't matter if you are using a 5v 2a it still says it's not enough power and you have to put in a battery, so just to verify, latest firmware is still borked. It's an overheating overpriced piece of junk, and they don't even have software setting to let us get by...

Yeah, when I called them (GoPro), they acted as if this was news to them. I guess they want us to keep buying batteries. Definitely do not cater to fishing content creators.. Thanks for your comment.
