  • Yay another action camera video. I've started using a power bank mounted to my helmet to power the GoPro Hero 10 Black on motorcycle rides, and thought I should share the issues I've found with this setup and the workarounds I've used to overcome them.

    Please note that to date, all versions of GP10 firmware after 1.20 (up to 1.46 currently) will not allow you to use the camera with a media mod & running off external power with no battery installed in the camera. There is a link in this video description where you can download firmware 1.20 if you want it.

    Watched you two for years.. I watched this and found a small improvement. The battery I just bought has a "standby mode" I'm sure other batteries do this also but mine is "getihu" powerbank 10k mah.. model: BG-123.. you click button once to turn it on then long press to put on standby and you can turn your camera on/off without your battery turning off due to no draw. Hope this helps you and your viewers. Keep the videos coming, loving it in Canada !!

      Thanks for sharing Shawna 👌 I've seen mention of some of these that have the standby option, but never knew which brands had it. It looks like Getihu aren't available here unfortunately, even Amazon won't ship em to Aus 🙄 I did find another brand Voltaic which advertise 'always on power' but they are pretty pricey here, about $190 😬 Anyways I'll keep an eye out cheers 🍻

    You mention that not everybody is interested in this topic, but it's a topic I think a lot motorcycle riders and others find themselves grappling with. I would think that an action camera company like GoPro would recognize needs like this and do something about it. You figure that all dirt bike riders, mountain bikers, skaters, skiers, snowboarders, etc. etc. wear helmets and like to record footage. It wouldn't take much for GoPro to come out with an external battery option. Like you said though, they seem to focus on frame rates and resolution more than they do on fixing bugs and providing longer lasting power solutions. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

    I’ve done something similar except it put the battery in my Kriega backpack. Just thread the USB-C cable through the opposite side of my hydration hose. Used it at Sea to Sky in Turkey in the heat and it worked a treat. Just turn it on at the start of the day and let it run. I had a 20000 mah battery so lasted a full day no problem without additional helmet weight.

    A very interesting solution. I have been putting my Anker external battery in a small tank bag on my bike but I don't like the cable that I run out of the bottom of that tank bag up to my camera. Twice I've caught my hand in it as stoplights when resting my hand and a couple of times torn it off when I dismounted. I've gotten one of those Brake Light lights on the rear of my helmet but I may play around with some way to mount my battery like this.

  • @RidingOnEggshells
    @RidingOnEggshells 2 года назад +2

    I was having the same problem with my previous GoPro and the magnetic connector. If it wiggled and I think would go from charging to not, that surge would stop it.
    This is what Nerb1 does too, but with a smaller battery pack, and I am thinking about the same. That way I can have them as batteries that could last for 2-3 hours, and use 2-3 of them per day (cos we record EVERYTHING).

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  2 года назад

      I wondered if my issues were something to do with the magnetic cable, so I rigged up a regular usb-c cable setup for one ride and had the same issues when plugging it in. They just don't like being charged in the camera, especially when warm. I'm wondering if the new enduro battery is any better but since ya don't seem to be able to get them in Australia we can't test 🤦‍♂ But certainly, swapping out a powerbank on the back of ya helmet is much easier than fluffing around with GoPro batteries all day long

    I use a similar setup with a dumber version of the power pack. If you buy the power packs with no digital readout then they turn on with power draw. No buttons on mine it just lights up and provides power when needed.

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  2 года назад

      This one turns on fine with power draw when the GoPro is plugged in but once the camera is turned off the power bank will go to sleep, and won't automatically wake up unless the camera is unplugged and plugged back in. I think this is fairly common behaviour. It's fine if you leave the camera powered on...

    I had the same issues with using my gopro for 24 hour timelapses, plugged into the PC for webcam, or for extended show recording and came to the same conclusion to remove the internal battery. I'm actually looking to see if there is a version that can be in-line with the mounting hardware or as part of the camera housing.
    8:12 just buy a super cheap LED usb light to plug in (a red light for the back of the helmet would be perfect imo) or get a different USB battery cuz some won't turn their output off (hard to tell which ones do that though).

    That was helpful, for me, I do some time laps videos where I want to leave my camera running all day. I tried it with the battery in and it worked sometimes and sometimes it shut off after the battery in the gopro died. I will remove the battery next time and try it. Also I was wondering what about a tiny LED light instead of a resistor? My power bank is about twice that size and it shuts off with small or no loads automatically too. Great hack.

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  2 года назад

      You can certainly try an led but it was nowhere near enough to keep any of my power banks awake, I needed about 38 ohms of resistance or 130mA of draw. An old school (non-led) 12v indicator bulb worked also but I wasn't sure how much that was drawing so I stuck with the resistors. Another option you might want to look at are Voltaic power banks, they do not switch off automatically voltaicsystems.com/v75/

      I also have a USB C cable running from my GoPro Media Mod up under the chin of the helmet through the padding and out the back. Then I have a 10000 mAh battery that is using velcro to connect to the back of my helmet. I just put some heavy grade velcro on the back of the battery and some on the helmet. I have never had it fall off. I too have had issues with my GoPro freezing. I have always attributed it to using the QuickCapture feature. I usually have QuickCapture enabled so that I can just hit record when I am ready to film something and then hit stop when done. The camera turns off. It's obviously a type of sleep mode that makes it so you can power up and start recording quickly at the press of a button. I'll be filming just fine, turning the camera on and off with the press of the shutter button until every now and then it just freezes hard. I usually have to pull the internal battery out of the media mod and reset it to get it to work again.

      It really depends on the power bank, some need more current than others to stay awake but I would guess that LEDs don't draw anywhere near enough. I did use a small 12V old style (non-LED) indicator bulb on my first try and that worked, but drew more power than the resistors.

    Thank you for posting this video. I'm browsing videos like yours looking for a solution to a "video length" problem. I have a Hero 10 Black. I put an invertor in the engine cavity of my BMW Z4. I ran a USB cable out to the front grill. I've mounted my GoPro to the center of the hood. I'm using GoPro's USB Pass-Through Door so I can connect the camera to constant power.
    As I'm recording my videos time out at 8 minutes and 56 seconds. These are 4 Gb files. Then the camera shuts off. I've talked with GoPro and they indicated I need to set up Channels so the camera will automatically keep recording and make a series of 4 GB files. I have not been able to find instructions on how to set up this feature. Do you know how to set up Channels?
    Thank you.

    • @MVDBR
      @MVDBR  2 года назад

      It shouldn't shut off, or stop recording... generally the GoPro will 'chapter' the video file once it reaches 4gb... just splits the recording into a new file and keeps rolling. Never heard of these 'channels' you mentioned. But yeah check your SD card for GX02... and GX03... files, these are usually the continuation from the first GX01... file. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

      @@davidconway1758 it could be due to the formatting of the sd-card (atleast thats the case on pc's so i wouldnt wonder if it would be the same on the gopro)
      If the sd-card is formatted to "FAT32" it CANNOT store files (no matter what kind) bigger than 4GB.
      As said i do not know if thats the case with the gopro, but i formatted mine to another type (exFAT) and the longest recording i've done was a full sd-card (400gb) without any interruption....i guess it would be worth a try?

    I bought the GoPro 10 because I wanted to have a webcam that would do 4K at 60 frames per second. Even when I take the battery out and run USBC power only with the compartment completely open I get between 10 and 20 minutes before the GoPro shuts down. It will do 4K at 30 frames per second. But that's not what I want. I have experimented with different USB cable lengths. This is with air conditioning blowing inside the car and the car always stored in the garage so it never gets super hot. But the GoPro 10 always shuts down for heat at 60 frames per second.

    Bit of a faff. short USBC female to USBC male attach the male into the camera run the short cable to the side of the helmet facing female down. mount to helmet in a tidy way maybe VHB tape. Buy a USBA to USBC magnetic cable. Plug the USBC connector into the female. plug the rest of the cable into the power bank and place in inside pocket. now you have a helmet that you can remove and the cable will disconnect itself
