The Chef Bringing Native American Food to Your Table

  • Native American chef Sean Sherman was raised on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. These days, as owner of the company Sioux Chef, he dedicates his time to revitalizing Native American cuisine. In his dishes, Sherman uses local ingredients that are indigenous to North America, while eschewing colonial ingredients, such as beef, wheat flour and dairy. But it’s not just certain ingredients that distinguish Sherman’s approach to food. His creations are truly gourmet. And with each beautiful dish, this chef is helping re-educate the American palate.

      My guess is that the lack of Native American restaurants has to do with the lack of marketing appeal that indigenous foods currently has. As good as some foods are, without strong marketing appeal, they just won't sell well (think the Seinfeld episode where Seinfeld convinces a guy to convert his restaurant to Pakistani, and the guy's business tanks).

    • @ZhangtheGreat

      @rac3r5 4 года назад +2

      @@ZhangtheGreat To understand why there aren't many, Native American restaurants, you have to look at history. During first contact with Europeans, introduction to new diseases decimated native populations. Then there was war, massacres, germ warfare and bounties on Natives which further decimated their populations. The Gold Rush further contributed to this. Additionally lot of them were moved to reservations away from their traditional hunting grounds and normal food sources. In Canada, a lot of them were moved to reservations and left to starve as food rations were not delivered as promised or food was spoiled. Then until very recently, Native kids were forcibly taken away from their parents and were put in residential schools. The aim of these residential schools which were re-education camps to strip away their native identity and make them more westernized. They were not allowed to speak their own language and partake in their culture. Additionally, a lot of these kids ended up being abused. There was a plethora of Native Culture, identity, food source and way of life that was lost during this period. This is why we don't see many Native American restraunts.

Can we not just enjoy different things? this video is about native american foods being re imagined. Who cares if its 100% authentic, cooked over a fire in a clay pot or whatnot?! It is interesting. its new. In no way did I watch this video and feel threatened by this guys desire to cook something different. So why must some of you be so offended by this? enough so to bring up white supremacy, slavery, skin pigmentation? in what way does that have to do with food?

    Food is common to us all. It is a integral part of any culture. We can all embrace one another and show love by reaching across the table. Jesus broke bread with everyone, across all classes to show love. Let's all share a plate in love.

    If you live in America, you enjoy many Native American recipes daily, and sadly, aren't aware enough to give credit. It's more than just frybread. Cornbread, succotash (a corn and veggies side dish nicknamed "vegetable medley" and sadly now sold in a can), jerky, chili, smoked salmon, guacamole, tacos, salsa, tamales, pozole, tortillas. You may think of this as "just food", but really it's Native American food. Only they really have the right to call it "just food" and we really should give them the credit. If it were a perfect world, Taco Bell would be called "Americanized Native American food".

    I hadn't thought about the cuisine not having dairy in it, but I guess a bison isn't exactly going to be open to you going up to them and grabbing a squirt. Since my grandparents were all from Italy, the idea of a cuisine without cheese is eye-opening. I'd like to try this stuff.

    He talked about something my uncle mentioned too. North America was Native land before, my uncle always told me stories about the old days and how things were done back then. He talked about how people are discovering things about the galaxy when Native people already knew about these things beforehand. Not just Native Americans but all natives all around the world. He told me that all native people around the world are connected. BTW I'm Native & I live on a Reserve in Canada.

I'm a huge food history nerd, and food was how I was introduced to Cherokee culture at a young age (I'm a Georgia resident, New Echota isn't too far away). This awakened my curiosity- and it only grew from there. I want to learn more. I want to learn how to make these things myself.
