If you WANT to know some of the timings they have for their songs, I am quoting a comment of someone who tried explaining it; its amazing. This is for the Tool song "Jambi"
"The “trick” for finding the beat with Tool is to NOT try to find the beat, but rather try to find “the pulse”. Try to “feel the pulse” of the song.
To get technical, the song is mostly in 9/8 (except for the groovey guitar solo part, which is in 6/8). 99% of all hip hop (and honestly most rock and pop too) is in 4/4. That’s 4 quarter notes per measure before the pattern repeats. 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4. The easy head-nodding beat. But this song is mostly in 9/8. That’s 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-1-2-3...etc. You can count along from 1 to 9 and the pattern repeats. But that’s hard. And that’s because the song has “subdivisions”. Instead of counting 1 to 9, try counting 5 + 4, like 1-2-3-4-5-1-2-3-4. The first 5 has a pattern, followed by different pattern of 4 counts, and then back to the 5, then back to the 4. There’s a “pulse”. There’s clearly an emphasis on “the 1”. ONE two three four five ONE two three four ONE two three four five ONE two three four, and so on.
Easy right? Fuck no, Tool makes it hard. That’s because each instrument is doing different subdivisions. Remember how I said the 9/8 pulse can be subdivided as 5+4? Well in the beginning the pulse is 3+2+2+2! (1-2-3-1-2-1-2-1-2) And then each instrument takes its own subdivisions. The drums become 3+3+3, while the guitar becomes 2+2+2+3, and the vocals are doing 3+2+2+2. The bass is doing 3+3+3 like the drums, but are leaving every 3rd beat out, so it feels like 1-2-__-1-2-__-1-2-__, which creates an triplet feel over the rhythm. So each instrument has their own pulse, but they come back together after 9 total beats, every single time.
The “easy part” is in 6/8, which can feel like 1-2-3-4-5-6, but to me feels more like 3+1+2 (1-2-3-1-1-2)
Then it’s back to 9/8, with all the different subdivisions, but then it switches to a half-time. The pulse slows down and the timing drops from 9/8 to 9/4. The brilliance of this part is that lyrics talk about breathing in union and coming together and becoming one, and all the instrument fall into a 5+4 pulse. They finally come together on the same pulse, to “breathe in union”.
Anyway, yes almost all Tool songs have crazy time signatures and polyrhythms and polymeters. Jambi is far from the hardest to groove to, but it’s also far from the easiest.
Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk"

    • @jacksmith4460
      @jacksmith4460 3 года назад +3

Honestly I think they actually start from groove rather than the mathematical when it comes to writing. (not saying thats what you are saying, just made me think of this). Not saying there is anything wrong with such ways of breaking music down
With the exception of Lateralus the song and specific sections in songs where they are being deliberatly poly rhythmic (some of these are even feel based too) s much of what they do to me is about groove even if its an odd groove. Thats what is so amazing to me about this band, there are hundreds of band s that use poly rhythms and although Tool was not the first they did pioneer some of it as did Meshuggah but for me the thing that sets both bands apart from many other is how groove based they manage to be.Another band that has this poly rhythm but groove based balance was Botch and at points DEP but they were a touch more erratic with it.
But Meshuggah Botch and Tool all share a similarity even if they are all quite sonically different. They understand not just rhythm but how to use the accents, how to play accents across each other and do it in ways that are musically pleasing and easy for the ear to comprehend. They also get how different signatures can actually share accents and use these as pathways or bridges (like a 3/4 accent might be the first part of a 5/4 cycle to use an example) They all use it for feel of the section or the entire track they are using it in. I suspect with all 3 a groove based riff or beat is written, and the maths will come after that and/or be partially already present.
What I am am taking a very long time to get around to ,is I think groove is actually the key to understanding and breaking it down is useful but it would not surprise me if in the case of all the bands I have mentioned, some maybe all are not using that way of counting consciously, its feel based, compartmentalised and bolted together, but feel not the less, and this is why these bands are great they are marrying maths, feels, technique, and of course great riffage and drumming

Good on ya. Great comment. I know f#%& all about music, but I have literally, intuitively described Jambi as a pulse forward. Again, not being equipped with musical literacy or nomenclature, it “seems” like Danny drives the journey forward versus laying down a foundation, although he does that as well, which would appear to be his unique genius.

And so the Legend goes, shortly after Danny Carey's 19th Birthday he felt an urge to walk to a local lake near his residence in Lawrence,Kansas. It was there that a very dark storm cloud formed upon the lake. Danny was compelled to move forward to the edge of the lake, when suddenly the Loudest Thunder ever recorded in History was encountered & a hand emerged from the Lake holding two Hickory Promuco drumsticks. And so it was. From the hand of the Ghost of John Bonham to the new King of Rock Drumming. And the world has been blessed ever since! Danny Carey is a Human Octopus! Listen & React to Led Zep's No Quarter!! You will be blown away like all of the rest of us?

What i like about Tool the most is usually these ''out of order'' or ''irregular'' drums that somehow make perfect sence. If you try to keep track of drums and figure the rythm, you get lost but, it all makes sence when you listen to the song as a whole. I would say, they have quite unique drum sound!

Never apologize for appreciating Tool! They are today's led zeppelin meets pink floyd.... They have created a sound all there own! The level of complexity in the music is untouched. The depth of lyrics is astounding. You really have to do a lyric breakdown and research the meaning to come close to a full appreciation of what they do. A one of a kind band! And Danny is by far a unique talent on the drums. So few can recreate what he does. A virtuoso! Enjoyes your reaction. I saw you cheesing on the screen pretty much the whole time. That with you being a drummer says it all! I enjoyed you reaction style. Keep it up. Wish you the best and much success.

Masterful. Great at the front with vocals and instruments. Carey's command of a very large and diverse kit reminds me of the great Neil Peart. I'm a new fan of this band. I drum and know a few things about drumming but Danny Carey wears his kit as part of his body. The syncopation and time signatures he is executing perfectly are something to behold. These songs require concentration and athleticism even with his natural skill set. I would say Danny is one of the greatest drummers of our time, and especially with this genre.

Love the Tool journey your on man. Keep spiraling out. You should check out Ænema next. I love Danny Carey’s drums in that one and the lyrics are incredible. 🤘

It is said Danny Carey's ability comes from the fact his brain has 4 corners instead of 2 halves, each capable of controlling a limb independently.

Yeah I'm a Zeppelin fan as well. And i believe that Bonzo and crew were the greatest until Tool came along. I wanted to yell "good luck" and "try not to count" at you before you watched this. Lol
All in all i appreciate your reaction to Tool and appreciation of my favorite band. It's awesome to see someone new slip down the Tool rabbit hole. 🤘

I love Tool! But if you want to see the GOAT of drummers, check out any solo from Neil Peart from the band Rush.

You oughta get adblock. It's free and stops all the ads. Works fantastic on youtube. Glad you are appreciating the talent level and artistry that is TOOL! I look forward to more reviews.

You’ve got to hear Vicarious and Aenima with all that’s going on these days. Have the lyrics pulled up.

Good reaction. He's unbelievable. If you want another amazing drummer to check out, look into Gavin Harrison/Porcupine Tree's song 'Anesthetize'. Also, Joey Jordison with slipknot is impressive.
