  • Checking out the lens behind one of my most popular reviews ever (!).
    This lens will work on Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, but NOT full-frame digital SLR cameras. It will also work on their EOS M system and RF-mount cameras, but only with the appropriate adaptors, and it will only give an APS-C image circle. Got that?! ...well, still less complicated than the compatibility issues for old Nikon DSLR lenses heh heh.

    I got this lens for my very old EOS 1000D back in 2016, based on that popular review of yours. I got the 90D in 2020 and this lens instantly became a favourite for me just because of the sharpness. I had only zooms at that time, so the difference was easily noticeable. Plus, the build quality is fantastic. Great little lens for not a lot of money. Would also recommend it. :)

      What do you think it's ok using the 24mm efs on my canon RP using the adapter? Will it improve his quality despite using it on a crop sensor? Im really trying to know how big the difference in sharpness is between 24mm efs 2.8 and the rf 24mm 1.8 ..

    3 years latter I bought this lens still is my favorite.
    I ruined my 18-55mm and I needed a replace then I took my time to think about and maybe it could be the perfect chance to risk buying this thing and the very first photo I took, immediately look the bit better quality and the more I use it the more I found it's pros and cons until I find out this lens was perfect for me as it is in the perfect point where focal length and crop factor comes in balance withing the one of smallest lens ever made by canon.
    APS-C works at the physical qualities of the length but cropped down, so you can get the perspective and "wide feeling" the 24mm itself gives but zoomed in as a 38mm so it always gets some level of emphasize to whatever you shoot.
    If you shoot close, you show what you want and if you shoot from afar, it looks wide enough to your typical landscape
    I love scene portraits and this lens gets those so easily, no matter what you shoot you can get a bit of context about what is around it, I even find it useful for some product shots due to the close focus and as it keeps distortion low and easily corrected, but when you need that distortion, is there.
    I think this lens is designed as an alternative to the 18-55mm as it pretty much does all that can, but paying off the zoom versatility on a single focal that tries to do all at the same time along a sharper image and lower light perfomance.
    I really love it, but sadly is a bit hard to recommend, because price matter a lot and 50mm f1.8 gives a more noticeable difference from 18-55 at a cheaper price than 24's and the eos-m 22 f2 is the same as 24mm, but stronger so lets hope eos-r gets that lens just as small.

    I have this lense and it remains on my camera most of the time for live streaming, vacations, events, and creative shots. unless I have. very specific shot I am aiming for this sense exceeds for general use. its the perfect vacation lense as it makes my 80D super light and comfortable. I only find myself reaching for the 50 f1.8 when I really need bokeh or tighter shots. most off my images are shot with this as its super comfortable and the quality is more than enough fro my basic needs(events, vacation, portraits, land scapes. it ticks all the boxes.

    Would very happily buy another for my R10 if they made one and kept it affordable, though it feels like there’s less incentive to make it affordable since Canon won’t allow any competition from 3rd party manufacturers. What a shame.

    I wonder if this lens has sample variation issues. I had it on my 850D and initially kept it when I upgraded to an R7, but I found the image quality, especially in the corners, to be sub-par at best, and pretty bad at worst, so I sold it off. Certainly debating picking up the 40mm pancake to try with my Metabones speedbooster.

      Most lenses have. LensRentals did a quite exhaustive observation about that by comparing up to 10 samples of the same lenses and publishing the results some years ago. Some lenses only had mild variation, some had a rather wild one. The take-away was that basically every "normal" lens review will miss to inform about the actual possible quality differences a buyer might get.

  • @dougsmit1
    @dougsmit1 Год назад

    It might have been nice to compare the results of this lens with the kit lens at 24mm and f/5.6. Obviously this would be a speed upgrade but many R7 owners already have the kit zoom. Some even have the RF24 f/1.8 which is much more expensive so a mention of how the pancake compares in size and performance would also be appropriate. To me, what is needed for the R7 is a low priced wider than 18mm, faster than f/3.5 prime to augment the kit lens options. It remains a mystery why we have, so far, had so few RF versions of existing M lenses like the 20mm f/2 or something new, wide and prime for RF to compete with Laowa, Nisi etc. manuals.

      Hello! Let me ask you a question. I got a Canon EOS RP which is Full frame and when I used the 24mm EF-S lens + the adaptar, my resolution dropped a little when taking photos. I assume that happens because of the crop factor. So I went from 26MP to 11MP or something.
      I'm planning to get a R10 very soon and I'd like to know if I'll have the same issue given the fact that the R10 is a cropped sensor camera or I'll be able to use the whole 24MP sensor even if I'm using an EF-S lens?

I remember using adapted EF STM lenses on an EOS M - unlike native M-mount primes like the 22mm, if you turned off the camera with the lens focused anywhere besides infinity, it was impossible to retract it without turning the camera back on and "manually" focusing it back into itself.

    I am getting confusion. I have the 22mm stm which is great, on the eosm from 2014, maybe I am getting old.

      I am confused , too but then I find out..
      This lens 24mm is originally made for EF mount with S suffix designed for crop APSC sensor.. EF is for the old DSLR system.
      Then Canon made the EF-M which is the first Mirrorless iteration, the EF-M 22 mm.. that you have..
      Even more confusing, the newer Mirrorless system now is RF not EF anymore.
      It becomes moot if you have appropriate adapters for RF.. ie EF-M to RF or EFS to RF.
      I have the 22mm but now I want to buy the 24mm because it looks so good based on this video.

      How's it confuse? It's in different mount.
      Canon uses EF on all of their DSLR. Canon attempt to get into mirrorless by introducing EF-M mount. However Canon found out EF-M design can't cater full frame and IBIS. So they bring out RF

    • @zegzbrutal
      @zegzbrutal Год назад

      EF/EF-S is the same physical mount
      EF-M on its own
      RF/RF-S is the same physical mount.
      The S suffix means the lens is for APS-C bodies

      @@zegzbrutal newbies confuse because the "EF", but the EF/EF-S is not the same as EF-M...
      And Canon brought out the new mirrorless mount and named RF..

    I thought full frame equivalent wasn't a thing with efs? Is that different than crop factor? I thought 24mm efs was 24mm on efs vs like 24mm Ef would be like 38mm?

    • @Mr.Feanor
      @Mr.Feanor 8 месяцев назад

      Not just efs...any lens on crop camera has different lenght.

    • @austingirdner92
      @austingirdner92 8 месяцев назад

      @@Mr.Feanor yeah lenses made for full frame cameras that work on crop cameras makes sense that the focal length gets tighter. But I'm asking if on EFS the focal length is as stated or if it also changes. You would think because EFS is only four crop sensor cameras that whatever it suggests is actually what it is

    • @Mr.Feanor
      @Mr.Feanor 8 месяцев назад

      @@austingirdner92 It changes of course...the focal lenght is as it stated,but on any crop camera it changes. So if you own a crop camera ,canon has a crop factor 1.6 ,others 1.5. This means that shooting with a 50mm standard lens on an APS-C (crop) camera gives you the same field of view as shooting with an 80mm telephoto lens on a full-frame camera 50 x 1.6 = 80. But if you're asking is there a lens that mm is stated just for crop camera, of course not! Because that wouldn't be the correct numbers.
      Ef lenses work on both types of canon cameras, full frame and crop sensor. But the new lenses meant for full frame, RF ones works only on full frame.

    • @austingirdner92
      @austingirdner92 8 месяцев назад

      @@Mr.Feanor it's like you speak English, but can't read.
      If EFS is only for crop sensor without adapter and will shadow if used on a full frame, why would they make list it as "x" when you would still have to apply crop factor.

    • @Mr.Feanor
      @Mr.Feanor 8 месяцев назад

      @@austingirdner92 Dude...because size of the focal length is the size it is, it cannot be of different dimensions😁 And the sensor of the crop camera is smaller than a normal sensor:) The dimensions cannot be changed:) Third time, the same answer, and that's it😁👍

    Another proof against the high megapixel sensors theory which tells it will decrease the quality of any lens. It only emphasise the optic quality of the lens. If it's poor it will suffer more and if it's good, if will shine!
