Re-review for 2024: Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM on an EOS R7

- By popular demand: checking out one of my FAVOURITE zoom lenses ever (more for nostalgia reasons than anything else).
This lens will work on Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, but NOT full-frame digital SLR cameras. It will also work on their EOS M system and RF-mount cameras, but only with the appropriate adaptors, and it will only give an APS-C image circle. Got that?! ...well, still less complicated than the compatibility issues for old Nikon DSLR lenses heh heh.

In the spirit of re-visiting classic lenses a number of people have asked me here to re-test the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8. I already have! :-) Check the playlists on my channel, and please let me know if there are any other classic Canon EF-S or EF lenses you'd like me to revisit (I've had a few requests for the 15-85mm lens). If this video does well, then I will Make It So.
Sigma 8-16mm F 4.5-5.6 DC HSM PLEAAAAAAAAASE
Tokina14-20 F2 please
If they don’t release it this year I will sell my canon gear 💯💯💯
The Canon to 15-85 please. It is highly underestimated and far sharper at the wide end than this lens. They can be bought for vitually no money in mint condition. I think it is better than the new rfs ones.
Sigma 120-300 f2.8 sport?
That review is so old it doesn't have a test chat, would be interesting to see if it holds a flame to modern alternatives. Or if it's worth considering over a 60/150-600 given the price difference.
Finallllly!!! Thanks for reviewing this lens. Nooooo don't make it the final one. We want you to remake your popular video the Fast zoom lens battle: Canon 17-55 f2.8, Sigma 18-35 f1.8, Tamron 17-50 f2.8 VC, Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS on r7 or r50
We want to see the comparison. Please pleaaaaaassseeeee 😆😆😆
It is astonishing that Canon hasnt released a modern RF-S version of this lens yet.
I hate what they did to the ef-m mount in this regard aswell
@@ArteUltra1195 so true. Albeit, there are no super special lenses for ef-m either afaik. But please correct me if I'm wrong
@@Wistbacka ef 22 was super thin and f2 , the 32mm is super sharp
You Mean RF-S right? It's a shame how they ignore their APSC customers.
@@gtaliano Yeah. I was just referencing the new mount in general.
But Canon has made it abundantly clear that they only target themselves to professionals and brand loyal sheep. Very Apple-like. Just you wait for when Canon starts removing features and calling it "brave".
(I say this as someone who grew up with Canon gear, and only switched to Sony 1.5 years ago)
Man I miss owning this lens! It was my main lens with my 70d and 80d. I finally let it go when I sold my 80d but so many great memories and photos/videos from this lens. It went with me all over the world and was a still in great condition when I sold it. Thank you for the revue
Canon makes a 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 thats REALLY sharp for a bargain. Sure, not amazing for low light, but really awesome focal range that lets you hit 24mm FF equivalent at the wide end.
@@thomasanderson5929 Wow, I didn't know about this lens - what an intriguing focal range. Thanks for sharing.
@@nSpiraliArchitectb That 15-85 lens was duped the "Cropped Queen" where I live, with the 17-55 being the "King" (this was back in the days).
@@thegrayyernaut I just picked up an m6mk2 and it may be my first lens after buying the speedbooster.
Wow I have the 17-55 for about 17years now look at r7 (camera number 4) for this lens😊
Another great review Chris.
Hoping you can get your hands on the new RF-S 10-18 soon for an R7 review!
Looking forward to it too :)
Would be good to see an efs 10-18 vs rfs 10-18 lol
Ah, my workhorse! This lens just keeps on going, I have no need to upgrade unless an RF-S version comes along. It’s great and thanks for making this review as it confirms that it’s still sharp even on the R7. Come on Canon, the gold ring lens range is needed for USM zooms and 1.4 primes.
I bought this used in my 77D days and beside the barrel creeping strongly but else its fine, i loved the lense, f2.8 and sharpness, lovely. I gave it to a friend together with my 77d so im happy its still beeing used.
It's always great to see some older lenses going through your excellent testing process.
Now... I'd love to see old Nikon classics as well !! 🙂
My favorites would be their 20/24mm F/2.8, 35mm F/2, or 50/85mm F/1.8
My Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is still the foundation lens, almost always on an 80D or on the 90D. Its purchase was based on your 2015 comparison / review. The nearest similar full-frame L lens seems to be the EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS USM.
I have the 4L 24-105mm so most probably I'll give it a pass, unless there's a dramatic performance for videos with a speedbooster at f2.0. But the focus noise worries me
I picked this up, used, at around $100. Best money ever spent. It is paired with the R10 and the range is just amazing for all kinds of photography
I just ordered the same combo! I'm looking for a compact do-it-all setup, and this is what I concluded gives the best price / performance / size ratio. I was considering the R8 which is small as well, but then the lenses are still going to be big.
How about video? I'm thinking about getting this lens for my r50.
I write on every reviewer's wall that Canon needs to bring an overall zoom lens like RF-s 17-55mm F2.8 or Allow Sigma for their excellent 17-50mm F2.8. I use the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 with Canon R10. It works excellently. But in the case of a fast-moving kid, it misses his eye 5 out of 10 times. For other works, it is awesome.
Still use this for my 80/90D both for photo and video. Its definitely a keeper
5:30 did look a bit soft to me, especially when viewing full screen at 4K. Was this a 100% zoom on the image? Loved the music during the Patreon segment btw, it has a nice jingle to it!
Could you also re-review the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 DC OS HSM?
Excellent video! the 17-55 is def on my short list for the R7. Please re-review the 15-85mm on the R7, thank you in advance.
Yeah, it's been my workhorse lens for decades; I'm actually using my second one now, as my first one was getting rather dusty inside, and it had a bad influence on the image quality, especially with harsh light (like spotlights and such). Also once had a ribboncable kicking the bucket on me; that's what you get when you're zooming a lot.
This test really shows the importance of investing in good lenses. You could have bought this for a mid range DSLR when it was released and still be comfortably using it to this day on a modern mirrorless camera.
Hi Chris! Thank you very much for your re-re-review of this classic! It is still my default lens on the R7 and probably will stay there for a long time until canon (or maybe a 3rd party) will make this lens for rf-s.
Re-review + re-review = re-re-review lol 😂😂. Cheers mate
Hey, do you get the focus breathing?? Im about to buy it.. but i cant stand focus breathing! 🫣
@@mgschmidt19 yes, it does have focus breathing
how would you compare this to the new sigma 18-50mm f2.8 rf-s
@@MuhammadIbrahim-wy7yk the sigma is sharper and waaaay lighter, more compact. It is infact my walkaround lens now because of it´s compact build and weight. But it does not have image stabilization.
Very nostalgic! I remember having this lens on my old 70D after i've graduated. Now i'm using A6400 with Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 and I can definitely feel it 1000% better in terms on handling and image quality. Really interesting how time progresses.
Which is better ? Tamron or Canon 17-55 m
@@a_commonman Definitely the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8

Loving these re-reviews! It's great to see this lens still performing today. Would be interested in seeing the EF S 15 85 re-reviewed on a modern body.
Picked up a barely used copy of this lens for my R7 about a week ago for $330 USD (equivalent). No problems with IS or AF noise when used for video (it's much tighter than a old copy I borrowed and tested a week before that). Bought a third party hood for it, and it'll be my walk-around for the R7 along with a 10-18mm and 55-250mm that I bought used for $250 USD total, including third party hoods. Thanks for the great re-reviews of these lenses which spurred me on to assemble this mini-lens kit!
Just bought one along with an 80D for my brother to start off his video/photography business.
My Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 has internal focusing and a rubber gasket sealing.
fun stuff seeing Chris review these old EF glasses on the new mirrorless
Love mine, perfect on my 90d for night shots round town
I'm astonished by that vignetting performance!! New lenses have +1 stop vignetting to help sharpness in the corner and, especially with older sensors, can lead to color shifts and cats-eye bokeh. But here EVERYTHING is circular, so pretty!
please do a review comparing with sigma rf 18-50mm 2.8
I bought mine after seeing this video. It's super sharp, IS is a great treat and the zoom range is useful. Build Quality is great and it feels really nice on my 90D. Focus ring rotate window is realy little (about 90°) but it's smooth. I couldn't find it's OG hood, so I hook it with 24-105's . I think it's THE BEST zoom lens for crop sensor cameras.
Thanks Chris - this is the re-review I was waiting for...
This was one of my favorite lenses ever. Bought my Canon in Gwangju, traded the kit lens in Seoul's iPark mall for a Tamron 17-28 and absolutely hated it and went back over to Namdaemun for that EF 17-55 and fell in love. I used it so much though that the zoom element started to drift as I just walked around slung around a strap. I've since switched over to the Sony system and still getting used to it.
Christopher could you please review the Voigtlander ultra wide set - 10mm/12mm/15mm
Thanks for the great video and the confirmation to me that it was completely right to buy this lens new three years ago for just under €600.
I love this lens on my 90D. For a long time I thought I was the only one who found this lens simply fantastic (which in my eyes is the "little brother of the 24-70 L and 24-105 L" purely in terms of design and handling). 🤗
This is a strong combination - I love this lens on my 90D as well. Super versatile, and sharp on the 32.5 MP sensor. In terms of IQ, the 17-55 , along with the 10-18 mm, are my favorite Canon brand EF-S glass. Sigma has some compelling glass too.
The 90D has many of the same capabilities of the mirrorless options, like focus peaking, electronic shutter, dual pixel AF, focus bracketing, diffraction correction. The only thing I would add is All-I (the 80D had All-I, wish they would add it back to the 90D with a firmware update), and C-log for video, but for photography, it has to be the finest and most capable APS-C camera ever, DSLR or mirrorless. If we ever get a Magic Lantern build for the 90D, it's over with.
I use this lens today and love it! I definitely have what you would call an old school setup but I had no idea this lens was 17 years old!
Nostalgic lens! Loved my 17-55 on my 550D!
Yes ! Ahah same stuff here and R7 too.
I've owned this lens since new. It's in pristine condition as I've only ever used it on a few occasions but still love it.
I bolt this onto my 90d, which is the same sensor as the R7 and I love it. Picked up a used copy for 300...
Own the lens and I love it! Thank for great review!
I recently bought a used 17-55mm f2.8 for my canon 80d. Nice and sharp. A very usable lens in low light conditions.
I used this lens a lot for couple years and loved. I was really sad to give it up when I switched the full frame. To make it worse the 24-105 f/4L is not as good in my opinion. A couple years later I bought a 7D ii for wildlife and got another 17-55 for events but I find the sample variation to be an issue. The lens performs great zoomed all the way in or out but at middle zoom range focus is not accurate at all for some reason except at infinity. Not sure if its my camera or what. Now I have a 24-70 2.8L and while I would miss the IS I'm perfectly fine with the cropped FOV for events or I can put it on my 6D.
8:10 "which forced canon to fix distortion optically" - this makes the lens great for adapting to other brands. I use it on fujifilm bodies with a fringer adapter
I recently bought this ef-s lens brand new... adapted to the R7 and it works great.
I would be surprised if Canon ever makes an RF-S version of this lens with constant f/2.8 and decent optics that don't rely upon in-camera distortion correction. However, they might make a lesser version with a narrower constant aperture, more compact design, and weaker optics (in the wide-angle corners) that depend on in-camera distortion correction. I hope Canon proves me wrong, we'll see :)
Hey Chris! Have you ever tested sigma 18-35 1.8 & 50-100 1.8 with viltrox M2 speed booster?
He's shown the results from it in his 18-35mm Sigma video. The speedbooster is meant for full frame lenses, and the Sigma 18-35 and 50-100 lenses are both specifically aps-c designed, so it just vignettes; the original image being in the center, the rest is black. No speedbooster is needed for those wonderful lenses my friend.
@@EvolvingMagic so valuable! Thank you!
Wait a minute. Per my understanding, speedboosters are meant for APSC not FF. Correct me if I'm wrong. But with F1.8 I doubt if speedboosters can add benefit
@@marknongkhlaw1674 they are meant for aps-c cameras boosting full frame lenses. When you put, say, a nifty 50 (50mm f/1.8 full frame lens) on an aps-c camera, it turns it into a 80mm 2.8 focal length because of the crop factor. The speedbooster, boosts that same nifty 50 ff lens on an aps-c camera from 80mm f/2.8 down to about 55mm f/2.0. It DOESN'T work on aps-c lenses, as all it will do is show the image in the center, and the blackness of the barrel of the lens in the rest of the image. Hope this answers all your questions. 😎👌🔥🔥🔥
Right in time for me trying to fill me 20-50mm gap for my APS-C, thanks for the great video Christopher!
After so many lenses and cameras, what do you think about ef-s 15-85? Is it still good lens for 2024 with camera like 800d?
I'm tempted to test one out, if a few more people ask
@@christopherfrostyes pls a test would be very welcomed. It’s essentially an EF-S L & imo a fantastic lens.

I'm definitely interested in the 15-85 as well Chris. I so appreciate your attention to detail and measured evaluation.
Well done and thank you for this retro review. I have this lens and I find its major weakness to be the slight stickiness of the zoom ring. Other than that, in my view it remains a relevant and unique APSC lens in the Canon range.
Hi Chris, massive fan of the channel, would love to see this lens against the new Sigma 18-50 f2.8. I just tested my 17-55 aagainst my nifty fifty and it was night and day on my R7's. I'm wondering how the sigma's image performs as I'm not all that happy with my 17-55 simply compared to nifty. With sigma's dedicated R mount and it being 15y later since the 17-55 came out.
Ah very nostalgic seeing this lens. I recall loving this on my 50D
I use this with a Nikon Z50 on an EF-Z adapter. Fantastic lens, fantastic range, fantastic quality, fantastic value. Bought second hand for around $500 AUD (great copy). Would certainly recommend to a new shooter wanting a lens to graduate to from their kit lenses.
A lot of EF mount lenses are still being used today with a Red Komodos and BMPCC 6k, but not a lot of gen z and alpha rents them because they are too front heavy and unwieldy when they paired with their newer mirrorless bodies.
I bought a mint one for my Canon C70 a few weeks ago for £185 from an auction on eBay, came with the original bag as well.
Must have gotten lucky as I usually see them go for much higher!
That's a fantastic price!!
Great info! One question, is the Image Stabilization in-body 5 axis or electronic? Thank you much!
I have the lens I shoot on a 7 D camera and it is tack sharp, one of my favorite lens of days go by, . It hard to beat my R 5 camera but I take the 7D and 17-55 or now and again. It is still one of my favorite lens to shoot with...
Hey Christopher, could you test the sigma 17-50 on the R7
Thanks for reviewing this lens again Chris. This has been on my sights for a while now for my use in video.
I'm interested to know, when you mentioned it has no hard stops, weather it has soft stops like the sigma 18-35 which gives a slight bump when it reaches close focus and infinity. TIA
I LOVE this lens for video work!
Always dreamed of having this lens when I was on aps-c. Got the Sigma 17-50 instead as it was what I could afford and was extremely happy with it. Felt like my first actual nice glass.
How did that lens work with r7, I read horror stories of the ibis doing crazy things with this lens this is what I want to buy. Thanks
Good memories. That lens was my baby for many years but I was always frustrated by the AF as it was very hit-or-miss especially in run-and-gun situations.
Looks like it still works well!
If possible can you also check sigma 17-50 2.8 os hsm? I bought it new after watching your videos.
Thanks for this video! It is very helpful! I'm curious though to also see how the canon ef 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM (version one) performs on the canon Eos R7...I recently purchased the Eos R7 and I'm looking at purchasing a standard zoom lens.
He did a test of the RF 24-105 L lens on the R7. It actually didn't hold up very well as the RF 18-150 performed much better.
Oh I haven't seen that review yet of the RF 24-105 L. RF zoom lenses with a constant aperture are quite costly, hence why I'm looking at EF lenses. I'm looking at f/2.8 and f4 zoom lenses@@rev.chuckshingledecker
I've been using this lens with an 80D for about two years now. Real budget workhorse setup.
I'm thinking of buying a used copy for my old 70d. I mostly shoot Fuji nowadays, but I still have my old Canon gear and I turn back to it every once in a while in my photography journey.
2in1 - a great lens and vacuum cleaner! unfortunatelly it's difficult to get the dust out of the lens but that's just a minor issue.
Not to mention the lens extends by itself when facing down. I always envied Nikon for 17-55 for its internal focusing
I currently use an R7 with a Canon 17-55 2.8 with an adapter for R mount, what are the differences between the new sigma 18-50 2.8 and these lenses? Is it worth the change? The weight difference is very noticeable, but is the quality worth it?
I'm excited to know if/when you will review the 200-800mm F6.3-F9 RF lens. Also, I don't think that lens is very sharp. The finest lines are a blur. That isn't a sharp lens. It is serviceable stopped down...
BTW, keep these re-reviews coming! 🎉❤
Yess ! Finally ! Was praying for this review ! (just bought a fuji xt3 with tamron 17-70 f2.8, which is indeed a better lens, as first serious kit though)
Had this lens for my 20D. It was a early version. Didn't really like it so sold it.
Had it for my 40D years later. Thought it was ok but decided to straight trade it for a 24-70L which weight as much as a fright train.
Never really fell in love with this lens but I can understand why some people did.
Hey Chris! Been watching some of these videos of older fast APSC lenses, and was wondering if (for fun) if the lenses could be tried on full frame? Rather it be for videography or photography, it would be interesting to see the quality on a FF camera, like an R5 or A7. Thanks!
Can be mounted on FF but with EF to RF adapter, but for photos, the megapixel count could drop to around 9 MP
I got a copy of this lens with a crack on the front element for $100 but the image quality is unaffected so I had many great images with it. A must-buy lens for Canon crop cameras!
I love mine. I use it on my C200, BMPC and T2i infrared.
I have a copy of the 17-55 f/2.8 that I purchased back in 2007. It's really the go-to general purpose lens for an APS-C sensor due to the focal length, f/2.8 aperture, and image stabilization. It's hard to get anything with comparable low-light performance in a zoom.
What are you comparing it to? There's nothing like it in RF-S. The closest thing is the RF-S 18-45 f/4.5-6.3, which is 2 stops slower. For full frame bodies there's the RF 24-70 f/2.8 L IS, which runs $2100 (!) and won't work with your R7.
Great review. How would this lens work on R50 APS-C camera?
THE F14 IS MY FAVORITE PLANE TOO! thanks for the review lol, classic workhorse of a lens
My experience is about the same on the R7, it is one of the two EF lenses that I have noticed with a much higher in focus keeper rate. The other is the EF Sigma art 85. Switching from focus and recompose in a dslr to eye af with this lens gives it a new life. Everything is relative, the r7 with this lens, is much better than the 77d with this lens. However the R5 with the 28 to 70L is a different world. You could do much worse than a r50/r10 and this lens for events.
I wonder how many years ago do the Korean samples go back? They seem to have a 2000-10's vibe.
You can use EF glass on Sony?!
Yas, Metabones and Sigma made adapters among others!
@@Nufrifin is AF any good on Sony? 🤔🤔🤔
@@deejayiwan7 I only have limited experience with a6000 that can only contrast detect, and it will consistently do basic autofocus (af-s to single point) with metabones + EF 40/2.8, 135/2, and ef-s kit 18-55, but it's not super fast. I think later pdaf cameras may provide better AF though, no proofs.
I'm happy for your story of the Korea.
can you make a comparison of this lens with the 17-50 2.8 tamron and sigma?
these are great lenses for beginners and can be bought used for affordable prices.
He did years ago! Other than sharpness in modern sensors, everything else should be the same as his older comparison
if I am honest I actually never needed more than this lens on a 7d or 70d on my travelings. It gave me beautiful photographs. The only downside apart from its size was that it was not weather sealed.
Which is better for now?
EFS17-55 IS USM vs SIGMA17-50 F2.8OS
It was almost same his previous review.
but how's for now with R7 with adaptor
When I had a Canon M6 MkII, I got one of these beasts used for $200. It was a MONSTER on that little camera, and not in a good way. Good results though. I ended selling it for $500 since it was almost flawless and demand for them is really high.
@christopher frost Please do the tamron 150-600 g2 on the R7.
I have that exact same combo but would like to hear your thoughts.
I’ve used this lens for 80% of my run and gun tv work. It’s sharpness, zoomrange, f/2.8 aperture and pleasing bokeh make it such a workhorse lens.
How do you circumvent the noises? Could be better with speedbooster +APSC camera for video. Just my 2 cents
@@marknongkhlaw1674 the noises from the autofocus? I never found them to be all that loud. And I exclusively filmed people wearing lav mics, so it wouldn’t pick up anyway.
what about the canon efs 15-85 im tempted to try that on my r10.
First of all, congratulations on this fantastic review. I wanted to ask: I'm undecided between this lens (17-55 2.8) and the Sigma 18-35 1.8. I'm a beginner, mainly focused on photography, and I would like to buy a slightly more professional lens. What would you recommend?
What did you end up getting?
@@urgamecshk I got the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8. It's a great and versatile lens; I think the 18-35mm zoom would’ve been a bit limiting. If you need an aperture of f/1.8, you might as well just get a prime lens. I think the 18-35mm f/1.8 is more targeted towards videographers than photographers, or photographers with very specific needs. I gotta say, though, I don’t think the Canon is worth the extra cost over the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8. Looking back, I would’ve gotten that, but overall, I’m pretty satisfied with my choice.
@@albertopell3630 I just lost an ebay auction for a $300 new model with a Hoya filter. Bummer. I can find a used sigma for around 200
Just bought a mint version at £175 - nice review.
Would have been nice to see it mounted on the R7 so we can get an idea how large/bulky it is with an adapter... It's the most important thing just after image quality for me.
Will this lens work on the Rebel T7? After months and researching what lens to get to move from the kits lens, i think this is it.
I’m started doing ecent photography, i think this has what i need. Big enough aperture for low light, and 17mm for tight spaces.
Is the focus breathing a general thing on this lens? (For the R7)
I have one, brand new condition, with the original box, used only a few times on a 7D just before buying a full frame (5D mk III) 🙂
I use this combination, and it's never let me down as of yet. I have even done some portraits with this combination, which didn't fail to impress either.
I'd love to know why they haven't updated it, though. Maybe they're leaving that up to all them third party lens companies that they allow to make lenses for their RF system?? HA. 🙄
The EF-S 17-55 is very prone to a serial failure: the flat cable(s) for aperture and/or IS breaks when the lens is used - even when used only a moderate amount. It can be fixed for 100-150 EUR though, even by independent repair workshops.
The EF-S 17-85 has the same problem.
I have a efs 17-55mm f2.8 that I’ve used quite regularly for a few years and there are no issues with the stabilisation. But there is a lot of dust inside the lens which is annoying but doesn’t affect image quality. I have used it in the rain and snow and it still works perfectly.
the dust is right behind the front element, just pry off the front ring (it is fastened by a weak adhesive), mark the orientation of the lens to the lens body, lose the (3? or 5? don't remember) screws, carefully lift the lens element on one side and use a rocket air blower to get the dust out. @@hy7968
Please do Sigma 17-50 2.8
I loved this lens, but it has a design flaw… under the circular label around the front element are a set of holes. That label loosens a little over time, so that, the zoom mechanism acts like bellows that sucks air and dust in through the holes where it sticks on the back of the front element. However, this construction also provides a mechanism for fairly easily cleaning the back of the front element… peel off the circular label where you will see screw heads along with the previously mentioned holes. Undo the screws and you can remove and clean the front element. This is where most of the dust that these lenses accumulate actually lies
Please can you review ef 50mm f/1.8 II I don’t think you’ve done it yet.
I think I prefer this to the Sigma 18-55? Maybe? Thanks for the review
The Sigma is much more lighter and compact
Are you showing raw photos or jpeg?
Could you retest the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens? I am pretty interested in the build quality but idk how will it work on a higher resolution body🙏
I’d love to see a comparison video between this and the new Sigma (2024) 18-50 f/2.8
The tamron or sigma 17-50 2.8 would be better choice IMO
