as a first time viewer, this is one of the best reviews of anything (let alone lenses) that iv seen to date. really nice audio, video, speech and information, really great job.
I've had this lens for nearly a year. It makes my T6i so small that it fits (tightly, but fits) in my mirrorless camera holster bag, and the only way to end up with a bad photo with this lens is to miss the focus. I have the classic "nifty fifty" EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens which is 85mm equivalent on the crop body but it suffers from being like a mid-telephoto lens due to that crop, making shooting in several situations more difficult. The 38mm equivalence of the 24mm lens is so much more versatile. The only advantage that my limited 50mm still has is the nice wide f/1.8 aperture which makes a huge difference in dark conditions. I find that despite owning 5 lenses for my camera I always end up with the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 on it at some point.
Hi. I was just wondering if this lens is nice enough for street photography and even for taking outfit shots? I have the nifty fifty and love the creamy bokeh but sometimes it's just too close to the subject on the crop body! Thank you in advance.
Having watched the review I must admit you are 100% right ; I have had this lens for over a year and I have used it in all kinds of situations as for now. Landscapes, a bit of macro, portraits:) indoors for parties etc. Extremely versatile ! I love it much:) One of my favourite lenses I own.
Between this lens and the new 50mm STM lens released last June, Canon is the camera to have! I love my nifty 50; I'm saving up for this puppy, since I need a good wide angle lens.
I'm thinking of that combo on my 200D. The 50mm is beautiful but the narrow field of view is frustrating when I can't use my feet to zoom. 24mm would be ideal with 40mm on crop.
Even though I already have the Sigma 17-50mm 2.8, I am VERY tempted to snag this little guy. Looks perfect for photographing narrow street markets, and for taking with me on LCC flights with very strict weight limits. Also, the Sigma has a very intimidating profile.
Update: I returned the junky Sigma due to autofocus issues and got the Canon 24mm pancake. Couldn't be happier! This lens is sharp, responsive, and absolutely perfect for travel. The field of view is fantastic. I don't miss zooming at all. Grab this lens, get out there, and zoom with your feet! My only complaint is that it isn't good for video because it doesn't have IS, and Canon cameras don't have sensor stabilization. But still, the lens is more than worth the cheap price.
Love this review of the pancake lens, by far the best and arguably the most thorough one (with a couple of points nobody else raised) :) Got mine coming in mail, can't wait to try it. I like your style, too, Dustin and will be keeping an eye on your channel. I am just surprised this video doesn't have heaps more views and likes!
This lens was on my 1300D 90% of the time. When i moved to the M50, I got the lens adaptor so that I could use the 24mm, I adore this lens and I cannot recommend it highly enough. .
We’re going to Scotland next June, and I’m thinking this would be a great choice for all round use, including landscape shots. I have the 18-55 kit lens, but your comments on the sharpness of this one have convinced me to get this one. Maybe a Christmas gift from my wife! Thanks for your helpful reviews.
I'm gonna be buying a Canon 70D and was looking for a lens for comedy skits that I'll be doing. Since this doesn't have image stabilization, do you recommend it for video? Seems almost perfect for what I want to do.
Will you be handholding the camera? A lack of stability might impact you if so. You might consider using some kind of glide cam type stabilizer or gimbal for the best results. This is a very good video lens when used like that.
Totally agree, i own it on a 800D and it s the best one lens for everything. I own the three 10 to 250mm zooms wich are excellent lenses, but this one is far more pleasant to use. And in the street dslr owners ask you "but what is this man ?" Your review reflects what I feel, you really used this lens !
Dustin Abbott Thx for your work. I hope we ll se soon the fast aperture efs lens. A 28mm would please me (better optics than the ef 28mm 1.8). Such a lens with 24mm performances would be fine. I'm impressed with efs price/quality it could be the best reason to buy Canon (and af always works fine). Waiting for your next episode...
Thanks for the review Dustin, most helpful. I have been trying to decide whether to grab one of these as they are currently on sale on Amazon. I think I will pull the trigger on that purchase now!
Thanks for the great review. I've just bought this lens for my EOS 600D/Rebel T3i/Kiss X5, loaded with the Magic Lantern hack. I'm really looking forward to using it. If I like it, I'll be looking into purchasing its 40mm big brother. The 1.6 crop factor, gives the 40mm an equivalency of a 64.8mm f/4.54 lens on a full frame sensor. I like short telephoto lenses and this will work well.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I now have the lens. It really is a little sweety. I love using it. It easily lives up to your glowing assessment. I also bought a JJC clone lens hood. It's an odd little thing. It does actually cut down on flare. That really surprised me. The genuine Canon ES-52 hood, is ridiculously expensive. I think It must be made out of gold 🤣. I keep a Hoya, slim frame UV filter on the front of the hood for added protection. There's no additional vignetting, even when it's swapped out for a Hoya CIR-POL UV filter. Attach a 12mm extension tube to the lens and it becomes a very useful close up/macro lens. The Canon EFS 24mm f2.8 STM lens is shockingly impressive. For anyone using a Canon APS-C crop sensor camera, you need to have this lens in your kit bag. It's not even close to being expensive. It's a real gem 👍!
I have just purchased this lens for my canon 1200D. I have the Nikon D5300 with the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. But i'm sure i'm going to use my 1200D with this lens a lot more for landscape and nightsky photography
Thanks in part to your review, this lens is my next one, for sure. After that, a macro...maybe the 35mm. Canon does a great job with these inexpensive lenses!
I've bought one last autumn and really like it, I especially like it because of it's very good IQ but also for it's close focusing ability ..... a no brainer for sure !!!
I've bought mine shortly after it was released, and it's my second favorite (first for indoor and landscape shooting). The first BTW is 50mm f1.8 II which is used heavily for photographing kids outdoors. +Dustin Abbott Do you have any recommendation on a budget upgrade of the nifty fifty?
The lens I prefer when I travel. I use my pancake 80/90% of the time on my 100D/SL1. The only limit I've found is on on dark places or during the night, when autofocus becomes slower and you have to push the ISO up. I agree with Dustin, why not more lenses like this!
Hi Dustin. Thanks for the review. Is this lens will be suitable for astrophotography? Considering F2.8!! I worry about noise even at 1600 ISO for APS-C cameras.
Very nice review, as always. This lens is actually one of the reasons I have decided to get a crop sensor body again, to replace the 100D/SL1 that I owned, but sols, thinking I would't' miss it when I went full frame. I was wrong, I did! That body was great with the 40mm pancake, but it's 64mm equivalent meant it was not quite useful as a general purpose lens. I did however buy a copy of the EF-S 24mm for my brother who shoots APS-C, so I have had the time to test it and view a LOT of images taken with it, and I can attest to Dustin's statements about the lens being a no-brainer. It is perhaps not to the level of the 22mm f/2 Eos-M lens, that is just phenomenal, but almost. The one thing I haven't had the chance to test is the bokeh, of course it is not the typical use for this lens, but I wonder what your thoughts are about that Dustin?
Very nice review! This is one of the first EF-S lenses I purchased after the EF-S 10-18mm. Both are great lenses. I shoot mostly full frame on a 6D these days but every so often I like to take the old T3i out and shoot with the EF-S. Still a very good setup and you don't mind if it gets a little banged up on a hike.
STM lenses use a focus by wire system, which means that the focus ring doesn't actually move the elements. That input is routed through the focus motor, and thus there is a "disconnected" feeling and also some lag. It is easy to focus past where you want because of that lag.
One of them is a full frame lens, the other APS-C. I like the Voigtlander's colors and bokeh better, but the Canon is sharper and obviously has autofocus.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I'm a little surprised about the sharpness on the Voigtlander, and by some of the feedback on it. I was just thrilled to discover they had a handful of lenses for Canon that I was unaware of.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes, it looks like it has that vintage charm to it, not razor sharp, but makes up for it with its atmosphere & character... I saw a few used ones online that were not terribly more expensive than the Canon, so that got me thinking 😄
Great review (enjoy your others as well, very thorough) I'm actually torn between this and the Tamron 35mm 1.8. I only have the canon kit 18-55 and would like something that's a good throw-on lens that gives me better bokeh then the kit - that's why I'm leaning towards the Tamron + the pseudo macro, but what a price difference. I think the canon 50mm is just too tight for me (on crop). I like landscape, macro and occasional portraits. Would you take one over the other? Thanks once again for the great reviews. I've been researching lens like crazy and it has gotten to the point where your channel is one of the first places I search :)
The Tamron definitely has a much higher end rendering than this lens. The EF 24 STM is good for sharpness, but I didn't feel its overall rendering or out of focus area was overly special.
Hey Dustin, thanks for all your accurate and complete reviews. I am already using a full frame system but I'm getting a Canon M5, in order to downsize the weight during my mountain experiences, so i will certainly get an adaptor ring to use my FF lens on the M5 as well. So I am asking your opinion about buying this 24mm or the M version of the 22mm. Thanks again!
Thanks Dustin, that's true! The 22mm has also a native M mount. Maybe I'll look for a nice and funny full frame fish-eye also, that I still could use on the M5 camera. Great job with your videos, bye. Luigi
Thanks Dustin for your great reviews. I have just bought Canon 55 -250 mm IS STM. It's really a great lens I am enjoying it. But help me again I want to buy a prime lens confused between 50 mm f1.8 or 24 mm f2.8. ?
Dustin: Do you still recommend this lens. I was thinking about a 24 mm, but Canon's L lens has its flaws and is expensive. Sigma's Art lens is interesting, but I have always purchased L glass. I am thinking about trying this 24mm lens for video on my new 90D. What are your thoughts? Also, what conditions cause the vignetting? Thank you, as always. I really appreciate your work.
It should work fine as a video lens for you. As for conditions...it's been years since I've done this review and have covered more than a hundred lenses in the interim. I can't remember that far back.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I followed your link and ordered the lens through B&H. It will be the least expensive lens I have ever purchased. It will replace the lens cap on my 90D or RP (great suggestion from your video) and will fit nicely into a jacket pocket. Many thanks.
Would you recommend this for nature/baby/child/outdoor photography or would another lens (preferably under $400) be more appropriate? I'm a beginner with an entry level Rebel 1200D.
My bad answer. Take also a small new or used 50mm 1.8 for portraits, candid, it's on par with the 24. Light, small, very good and price is fine you will stay under 400usd with your couple of lenses
Hello, I have the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 for my 80D. Do you think this lens would give me something different as type of pictures and occasional video? In other words - is it worthy buying it, because I'm kinda hesitant if to add it to my collection or upgrade my tripod. Sorry for the random comparison between a lens and a tripod, but that's the only "extra" money I have atm :)
Great video! I'm new to photography bought an camera a week ago it has a crop sensor and thought the 24mm lens would be perfect. close to the 35mm film camera I had years ago as a child. I also purchased the 50mm I hope I like that one also. The kit lens 18 to 55mm it came with I really don't care for.
Hi Dustin I have a canon m3 and i'm planning to buy a new lense. Which one do you think should i buy between this 24mm f2.8 or the canon 40mm f2.8? I also want to know which one will produce better bokeh and sharper image quality.. Thanks
How would you rate this one vs the 2012 EF 24mm 2.8 IS USM? Obviously this one can only mount to APS-C and the other one has IS but aside from limitations and features I’m curious about image quality comparison. The STM is currently $129usd ($100 used) and the USM is currently $549usd ($400 used) so being at the sub $500 mark leaves them in the running for me (24 isn’t particularly a favorite focal length of mine so I’m leaving the L out of the equation). I’d like to pick up whichever one (of these two 24’s) has a more unquantifiable dreamy factor for artistic applications. :D
Is there a 24mm for full frame that is this good ? I think what it comes down to when you talk about 24mm is that your shooting mainly for landscape or architecture so a need for a really fast aperture is really out of the question because you don’t need it. Your shooting for quality and therefore stopping the lens down. Am I right in saying that buying a fast 24 is a waste of money because of what I just said ? Let alone it’s hard to get DOF on a 24 even at 1.4. Just seems to make sense if you were going to spend less and go for a higher f stop that 24 would be a good place to do it
There's a lot of people who love 24mm as a focal length. Whether or not it works for you is of course up for you. This isn't a full frame lens, however, and cannot be used on a FF camera.
Dustin Abbott Dustin you didn’t answer my question though. If I don’t have a need for a fast 24 @ 1.4 could you recommend a 24 for full frame with autofocus that isn’t that expensive? Hard to find info on 24’s
+Giti Thadani This lens has been out for over a year, so it was actually before the 70D. I don't disagree about having a similar functionality to the 22mm f/2, though.
Is it wise to have the 24 and the 50 at the same time? will those two render the 18-55 obsolete in tandem? as i'm thinking of buying the 24 and the 50, would that be smart, or should i just pick one of them and stick with just one of the two?
+xMotivationFix Unless there is some compelling reason to but them both at the same time you might as well buy the one you think you will use most often and then later determine if you want/need the other.
I've only seriously been involved with photography for about 3 months and I don't understand the community-wide distaste for vignetting. Obviously it doesn't work for every situation. But I feel it brings more attention to the center of the image and in the past have often added vignetting it post. Just curious. Fantastic review, by the way!
Essentially it is an optical flaw, though one that has a desirable outcome in some situations. The same could be said of certain flare effects. I personally would rather add vignette in post to the images that it benefits than have it applied to all images equally.
Only think i dont like on this lens if AF button. It is to soft and i ended turning it of few times. I like it a lot with 24 mpx 760d it gained nice detail boost when moved from 18 mpx Rebels. 50 STM does well on 24 mpx also..
I have Canon 1200D with APS-C sensor, I want's to do specially flowers photography, I am confused between both lense, So please suggest which lens is better for me Canon 50mm or 24mm for flowers photography.
I like the 50mm focal length better for that. A little more working distance. Get the 50mm f/1.8, but be sure to get the STM version as it can focus a lot closer than the older version.
I've had this lens for most of a year and only really played with it when I first got it. I may have to dig it out and experiment some more because my initial images were not at all impressive. Of the first dozen photos taken I don't think there was a single 'really' sharp one in the batch. Of course this was on my 60D and I never really tried it on my 7DMarkII.
+Randy Dietmeyer Sounds like you may have needed to calibrate the lens to the body (not possible in the 60D). This is a very sharp lens and, properly calibrated to the body, will focus very accurately, too.
I hooked the lens back up to my 60D and took some test shots using my SpyderLENSCAL test chart. It had a pretty severe back focus, but because it is a 60D (like you mentioned) there is nothing I can do about it short of sending it to Canon. I then attached it to my 7DII and got the exact same results but since it DOES support microadjustments an entree of -10 zeroed in in pretty good.
Are you happy with the 17-50s performance at 24mm? If so, the only reason to opt for this lens might be for when you want an extremely compact option or because it might be better for video autofocus.
Dustin Abbott But i thought that the sigma has the OS. So wouldn't it be better ? To clarify its the sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS HSM. but of course this is cheaper than that.
Execuse me, but I can't understand why my new pucake lense 24 mm has a little bit back focus after I changed him in a store when my first one had back focus too. Is it normal for this lense?
I don't know if you will get a lot of background blur with a group. That is hard to do unless you have a lot of space between the group and background. Otherwise it is a great choice.
Is 24 mm is wide angle lense? I need a lense though which i can get group pic with background blur. Which lense can be a better option in reasonable price with my canon 700D?
Shahriar Islam It is moderately wide. There aren't really any wide angle lenses that you can shoot a group with AND get background blur. That defies physics. It's easier to get that look by using a telephoto lens and shooting the group from a distance.
I did own that lens back in the day and quite liked it, but it was before I did reviews and I don't own any camera today that it would mount natively on.
@@DustinAbbottTWI can't decide between canon ef-s 24mm f/2.8 and Canon EF 50mm f/1.8. Which one would you choose by considering the fact that I'm going to be using on a crop sensor?
Great review and you gained a fan .may i ask an opinion..if u see my channels vids you can see i shoot in low light.would this lens improve my video? Thanks
I'm afraid I don't have time to check out your videos, but if you are using a lens with a smaller maximum aperture (like a kit lens), then a lens like this will certainly help.
I sure wish this lens would have been a 27mm instead of 24mm, but close enough I guess. A lens to help make the most of your new 24 megapixel 80D sensor, and to picture the world in a more or less "normal" manner. If you wish to see why I would have preferred a 27mm pancake, go to the table labeled "digital still" in this article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_lens
i have the canon 80d and i want some good lens for that camera i was told to get the 24-70 and the 16-35 but they're for full frame cameras but i have a crop sensor but they seem to take great pictures i want to get better but i'll buy lenses that will work with my 80d i don't want to be buying the wrong camera lenses. i only want a few lenses. i have 2 full frame lenses and no crop sensor lens but i'm trying to see what happens. i do this as a hobby So i'm not rich like that i paid 500 for the 80d camera body with no lenses and then i bought the 16-35 and the 50mm i took some nice pictures but i want to take sharp pictures everytime that's why i'm learning all of the camera modes to see which one i'm going to like. so can you tell me about the 17-55mm 24mm 10-18mm 55-250mm and the 18-135mm which one do i need to buy for the 80d
All lenses will have the crop factor applied to them when mounted on a crop sensor camera. It isn't the lens that is cropped; it is the camera sensor. You can't get away from that. This 24mm lens is not the same practical focal length as a 24mm lens on a full frame camera.
What? What USM lens are you referring to? There are lenses with USM motors at many focal lengths and price points. I'm not quite sure what point you are making. Mine is that I prefer USM-type motors for manual focus over the performance of STM-type motors for the reasons I gave.
Referring to the 24mm canon lenses. STM vs. USM version. I was just saying it's awesome how it's not always the most expensive lens that takes the cake. I'm new to the industry but have been looking at the canon 24mm and only diff I could find between the two mentioned was $900.
as a first time viewer, this is one of the best reviews of anything (let alone lenses) that iv seen to date. really nice audio, video, speech and information, really great job.

The new STM version is actually a nice upgrade in a lot of ways.
The lens I prefer when I travel. I use my pancake 80/90% of the time on my 100D/SL1.
The only limit I've found is on on dark places or during the night, when autofocus becomes slower and you have to push the ISO up.
I agree with Dustin, why not more lenses like this!
Great work and nice review, Dustin!
+Anders Hjøllund Thank you very much!
Nice review. Best not to wear black long sleeves with black backdrop. Looks like your hands are floating ;}

@@stevechilds4043 Now what would be impressive is pulling a rabbit out of a lens that tiny 🤣
Good, honest review from a trusted source.
+Ron Breault That's kind praise.
Hi Dustin. Thanks for the review. Is this lens will be suitable for astrophotography? Considering F2.8!! I worry about noise even at 1600 ISO for APS-C cameras.
It's not the top choice, but it will work.
+Richard Rönnbäck If you'll look at my written review, I cover that a bit more thoroughly with a number of samples. Check here: bit.ly/1Uj9mEg
Thank you for another totally comprehensive and professional review. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
+fantomfoto That's a good perspective.
Awesome review for a Great Little 24mm lens. Like you said, “It’s a no-brainer.” I thank you for All of your awesome productions.
You're welcome.
Hi Dustin, you mentioned not liking to manually focus with an STM lens. Why is that? Thanks and great review!
STM lenses use a focus by wire system, which means that the focus ring doesn't actually move the elements. That input is routed through the focus motor, and thus there is a "disconnected" feeling and also some lag. It is easy to focus past where you want because of that lag.
If you had the choice between this and the Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5, which one would you prefer?
One of them is a full frame lens, the other APS-C. I like the Voigtlander's colors and bokeh better, but the Canon is sharper and obviously has autofocus.
@@DustinAbbottTWI I'm a little surprised about the sharpness on the Voigtlander, and by some of the feedback on it. I was just thrilled to discover they had a handful of lenses for Canon that I was unaware of.
I owned that lens for a while. It isn't particularly sharp, but it did produce images that I liked despite that.
Just go for the 22mm if that is your main APS-C platform. It's cheap, light, and has a faster maximum aperture.
Thanks Dustin, that's true! The 22mm has also a native M mount. Maybe I'll look for a nice and funny full frame fish-eye also, that I still could use on the M5 camera.
Great job with your videos, bye. Luigi
Very timely I was just looking at this lens for my 7d. It will help me decide to keep the camera as that "always with me" camera and not sell it. 😀
+Drew May that sounds like a plan!
I agree 100%. I love it. It's great for food photography. Other reviews weren't as insistent as you about te real sharpness of it.
+Nicolas Garrigue Have to call it how I see it!
Hello, Very nice information, please advice 24mm good for product photography
I think you've emailed me about this. I recommend the Canon EF-S 35mm Macro IS instead: bhpho.to/2FjuBGG
Thanks Dustin for your great reviews.
I have just bought Canon 55 -250 mm IS STM. It's really a great lens I am enjoying it. But help me again I want to buy a prime lens confused between 50 mm f1.8 or 24 mm f2.8. ?
What focal length do you need more? That's the easy way to make the choice.
nice review.. do you think i's more sharp than sigma17-50 2.8?
I can't, as I haven't used that lens. Typically a prime like this is, though.
I purchased a second one as a gift.
How good is this 24mm, as a walk around lens when traveling through the hill towns of Italy
It's light and sharp - sounds like a good walk-around to me :)
Hey Dustin, how does this compare to the Samyang 24mm f1.4 in terms of sharpness?
I haven't used the Samyang, but they are not really an apples to apples comparison. The Samyang is a full 2 stops faster.
Would you recommend this for nature/baby/child/outdoor photography or would another lens (preferably under $400) be more appropriate? I'm a beginner with an entry level Rebel 1200D.
I think this is a nice fit. It's very small and light but packs a lot of punch for the money.
My bad answer. Take also a small new or used 50mm 1.8 for portraits, candid, it's on par with the 24. Light, small, very good and price is fine you will stay under 400usd with your couple of lenses
Got it. Love it. Fully agree.
It's a nice little lens.
I don't know that it would be majorly different, though I'm not really familiar with the Sigma.
I'm pretty sure you will like this lens. It's versatile and effective.
@@DustinAbbottTWI Arrived today And I really like it soooo quiet compared to the kit lens.
Excellent review Dustin!

Hi Dustin
I have a canon m3 and i'm planning to buy a new lense.
Which one do you think should i buy between this 24mm f2.8 or the canon 40mm f2.8?
I also want to know which one will produce better bokeh and sharper image quality..
Thanks
I like the bokeh from the 40mm better, but the 24mm is sharper and focuses better.
Get the 22 mm f/2.0. Using native lenses is always primary and adapting secondary.
Loved your video thanks!
Glad to hear it
How would you rate this one vs the 2012 EF 24mm 2.8 IS USM? Obviously this one can only mount to APS-C and the other one has IS but aside from limitations and features I’m curious about image quality comparison. The STM is currently $129usd ($100 used) and the USM is currently $549usd ($400 used) so being at the sub $500 mark leaves them in the running for me (24 isn’t particularly a favorite focal length of mine so I’m leaving the L out of the equation). I’d like to pick up whichever one (of these two 24’s) has a more unquantifiable dreamy factor for artistic applications. :D
I’ve not actually directly compared those lenses. I’ve heard nothing but good about the 24 IS, but haven’t used it myself.
@@dannyklesh The EF 24mm F2.8 IS is considered a very good choice.
It seems like a modified version of eos-m 22/2 meant to interface with new 80D. Any major difference. Also in the pairing. Mirrorless vs dslr
Thank you for this review.
My pleasure.
Dustin what would this lense give you on a full frame like the RP? Would you get a cropped image?
Yes, it will automatically engage crop mode at somewhere around a 10 MP resolution.
@@DustinAbbottTWI bummer about the resolution loss. That wouldn't be an option for me unfortunately.
This is one of my favorite lenses!
+zjacobss I can see why!
I personally would rather add vignette in post to the images that it benefits than have it applied to all images equally.
i have mine from about 6 months, for me is the best prime for a aps-c
+Necrodh ndh Glad you've enjoyed it.
Is it sharp?
Only think i dont like on this lens if AF button. It is to soft and i ended turning it of few times. I like it a lot with 24 mpx 760d it gained nice detail boost when moved from 18 mpx Rebels. 50 STM does well on 24 mpx also..
Dustin could you recommend a good 24mm for full frame that is fairly cheap
The Canon EF 24mm F2.8 IS is a nice choice if you don't need a wider aperture.
Dustin Abbott Dustin what does this offer that the pancake doesn’t
I have Samyang 8mm fisheye and the 50 1.8 but I need something between those two for landscapes. Do you recommend this 24mm lens ??
24mm on APS-C isn’t particularly wide, but it would be a good focal length to slot in between the lenses you have
Dustin Abbott Thx. I want something wide enough but without getting everything in the frame, like the fisheye.
Do you think this lens would be good for food blogging ?
Sure. It can focus down closely and has a nice angle of view for something like that.
Halo Sir, I bought this lens a few days ago, I think the autofocus not quite and fast like kit lens 18-55 is stm. Is it normal, or my lens deffect?
I think that's probably normal. The kit lens has a smaller maximum aperture, so AF is a little faster.
I have a Canon EOS m5 and planning to get either this EF-S 24 f2.8 or the EF-M 22mm f2. Which is better for the EOS M5?
+Teck Chong Lai I would go with the EF-M lens. It saves you having to use an adapter
Thank you
I've had this lens for most of a year and only really played with it when I first got it.
*****
And such is the advantage of AFMA. I suspect you will have a whole new appreciation for the lens on your 7DII
Is that tiny amount of glass and small form factor means something compromised ?
+max factor Very little that I can tell. It's a strong performer
i got a sigma 17-50mm 2.8 do i still need the 24 mm ?
Are you happy with the 17-50s performance at 24mm? If so, the only reason to opt for this lens might be for when you want an extremely compact option or because it might be better for video autofocus.
Will the 24mm pancake lens fit on my canon rebel t5i?
It definitely will...very nicely.
would you recommend it for studio hair photography ?
I might go with the 50mm f/1.8 STM for that.
It's good for travel ? Can u recommend me a len good for travel on aps-c
It is a nice little travel lens.

+faizal kamalludin you will get smoother video performance out of this lens
Dustin Abbott But i thought that the sigma has the OS. So wouldn't it be better ? To clarify its the sigma 17-50mm f2.8 OS HSM. but of course this is cheaper than that.
It's the focus motor on the Sigma that will give you more issues. More hunting, louder, etc..
Dustin Abbott ohhh alright. Thank you !! Really appreciate it!
Execuse me, but I can't understand why my new pucake lense 24 mm has a little bit back focus after I changed him in a store when my first one had back focus too. Is it normal for this lense?
Have you done a calibration of the lens (do you have a camera body that allows for AFMA)?
How can I do a calibration? I don't know. Can do it myself? I have a camera body Canon EOS 650D
my camera is canon 700d...can i use this 24mm lense to capture group photos (making background blur) focusing multiple objects?
I don't know if you will get a lot of background blur with a group. That is hard to do unless you have a lot of space between the group and background. Otherwise it is a great choice.
Is 24 mm is wide angle lense? I need a lense though which i can get group pic with background blur. Which lense can be a better option in reasonable price with my canon 700D?
Shahriar Islam
It is moderately wide. There aren't really any wide angle lenses that you can shoot a group with AND get background blur. That defies physics. It's easier to get that look by using a telephoto lens and shooting the group from a distance.
It does not matter that you are wearing a black sleeved shirt with a black background. It works well to me. Thank you for this review.
Thanks, Chris.
Can you do a Canon 15 to 85mm F3.5 to 5.6. Review, please.

Looks like he go no arms!
How can we adjust the aperture of this lens when adapted to micro four third like lumix
I have no idea. Only if you have an adapter than enables aperture control, I suspect.
Canon needs to make more primes for their crop cameras. I want my primes lenes to be a prime and not the crop factor.
All lenses will have the crop factor applied to them when mounted on a crop sensor camera. It isn't the lens that is cropped; it is the camera sensor. You can't get away from that. This 24mm lens is not the same practical focal length as a 24mm lens on a full frame camera.
I agree about Canon needing to produce more EF-S lenses, though.
Will a follow focus work on this lens? Geesh....
Wow, you prefer the STM over the USM? But the USM is $900 & the STM is only $100 or so..... Crazy, eh
