This lens is VERY rugged. I have used it for the last 3 years hiking the desert and mountains surrounding Phoenix Arizona, with no issues. I have dropped the SL1 it is attached to, thrown it in the back of a Subaru, and at a wide range of temperature extremes. All with flawless photos.

I love this little lens. Just slap in on a camera, leave everything else at home (including camera strap) and you are low-key carrying a lot of quality in a very small package.
As a bonus, it works quite well for environmental portraits of my cat!

There is only about 1 stop advantage compared to the kit lens but there is also often unsaid benefit: your viewfinder will get roughly 1 stop brighter too and it's more pleasant to shoot like that :)

Another wonderful review. I love the format and formula you use, and how it's the same in every video. It helps that you take nice pics and seem to have a good idea of how it all works. So many reviews miss important things out, but you do a great job every time.

Been using this lens all week while on vacation in Texas. It's been great for group photos on my 750D/Rebel t6i! Been perfect for grab shots as I walk about the streets too.
    Figure 150$ U.S. Brand new.
VERY well made too. Makes the camera look cool and you'll never bash it into any door frames either...

I just got this lens today and tested it. It is sharp, good focusing and makes my 1200D more portable. Its AF is not noisy. At least not on my copy. the chromatic abberation and vignetting are gone with two mouse clicks in Lightroom. It is not as sharp as the Sigma 17-50 F2.8 but still very nice indeed. Greetings from the Netherlands and keep up the nice work. Its very helpful.

A review very well done, CF. Thank you for that.
I'm a big fan of pancakes. They help in making the leap in taking your gears out for a shoot on any day. Perfect for travels. I would say, 80% of the market out there are photo enthusiasts and do not need the higher cost, higher performance lenses. The pancakes would do most of the job. It's always better to work within your constraints than to focus on the have-nots in your gears.

Fantastic lens for its price. Its size will make it fit into any bag for on the go. Also you can do some decent macro shots with it. If you use any of the EOS R models with an ef adapter you can even use it for full frame without a Problem.
Definitely a no brainer to pick this one up.

I picked up one of these during a summer sale, simply couldn’t refuse a 35% discount. I wasn’t sure about how I’d use this lens, as I generally walk around with the EF-S 18-200 or the EF 35mm IS USM, so it sat in my bag for about a month. Then we went on a family vacation, and I decided to give it a proper try.
This lens is probably the best daytime street/vacation lens I’ve ever tried, always extremely sharp, useful field of view, quick and quiet AF, small and light, and has nice bokeh if you decide to go really close for a macro shot. If your camera body has digital IS, it can be used for video too. The only real weakness of this lens is that it lacks built in image stabilising, and this, combined with the f2.8 maximum aperture, will make it quite challanging to take handheld pictures after sunset.
Absolutely lovely lens for the price, especially if one can catch a nice discount.

I bought this lens and got it as soon as it was released for my Canon t3i and agree with everything you said. It allows me to take pictures of subjects closer to me better than my plastic fantastic 50mm lens does, and it doesn't distort people enough to make it undesirable for that purpose. I got some pretty Bokeh with it when photographing things close up.

    Excellent review.
This lens is now on my shopping list as I have an APS-C camera -Canon 70D- and when using my 50mm sometimes I have to get far away from certain subjects.
I´m looking for a lens that is sharper than the 18-135mm kit lens, lighter in weight, affordable and that is as close as a 35mm on a Full Frame Camera.
This one seems like a winner!
    Thanks Christopher.

It's great for street photography - small, and VERY light (body+lens+lens cap=888 grams).
Probably the best bang for a buck for Canon, maybe except the Nifty Fifty STM.

Christopher Frost Photography I did go through your review on the 40mm stm. You were very positive on the performance of the 40 mm lens even wide open. I tried the 40 mm after I saw your video and I was impressed with the results too, which is why I value your opinion on this. You don't seem to extend the positiveness to the 24 mm stm and that leads me to believe that it is not as good as far as sharpness is concerned. They look remarkably similar though so I thought they might share similar optics. What is your opinion when you compare this to the kit 18-55 stm and the 40mm stm in terms of sharpness? Again your videos are amazingly thorough. Keep up the good work...Cheers

The lens can also be used now on Sony E mount with a suitable adapter eg MBones and is a very small package even with the adapter. It is or can be similar to the Sigma 30mm f2.8 or the Samyang 35mm f2.8 which is physically tiny but neither have the close focus ability of the 24. Not sure if the FOV with the slightly more zoomed duo will make up for the close focus ability of the 24mm.

It’s a good lens, I have had mine a few months and does very well even night time with street lighting.
A 22mm would be perfect, but this 24mm looks nice and even 38.4mm equivalent with no obvious fisheye on my crop sensor Canon 70d.
So it’s for sure a keeper!

One thing I still don't get. This lens is optimized for crop sensor cameras, right? Do you still multiply by 1.6? (For canon).
Also, great review. Been watching reviews, yours included, about lenses all day. I think I have finally decided to go for this one. I am a beginner photographer, so I want to start with something that doesn't completely break the bank. That'll come later

    • @MahanthBeeraka

Yes. the mm focal length translates to field of view(FOV) on a full frame camera (most cameras and lenses indicate effective focal length if mounted on a full frame camera even if they aren't designed to be mounted on full frame, wierd? I know). So on your crop it will look similar to what a 38.4mm lens would on a full frame camera.
Also the aperture would need be multiplied by 1.6. so a f2.8 on 1.6x crop has roughly similar depth of field as a f4 on a full frame

    • @nesswatch7935
      @nesswatch7935 4 года назад +1

Mahanth Kumar Beeraka although this comment is old, this is not true, aperture goes unchanged whether it’s on crop or full frame. The only thing that changes is the focal length due to the crop sensor/full frame.

@@nesswatch7935they’re talking about depth of field alone. It has nothing to do with the amount of light going in to the sensor, of course your shutter will remain at the same speed. But because aps-c covers a smaller area than full frame, to capture the same fov using the same focal length you would have to compensate by standing further back, which makes your depth of field deeper. Similar difference in dof as going from f2.8 to f4, again, on full frame, without changing anything else.
Complicated, I know. But this is why full frame is said to give shallower dof, or why aps-c needs faster lenses to match that dof

Great video. That was a really fast turnover time for the video to be made. I'm a little sad the autofocus motor isn't completely silent, or super fast, but it's pretty sharp wide open with low CA, so I'm excited to add this to my bag when I get the chance.
