- I'm re-visiting a couple of lenses that I reviewwed in the past, before I used standardized testing and a full-frame camera. This should be fun! First up, one of Canon's most popular, and least expensive, pancake lenses.

This has become my favorite outdoors lens. Even makes my 5D II feel portable.
I use this lens on my 700D and it is the most useful, versatile lens I've ever owned. I absolutely love it.
I'm in love with this Cute Lens it gives superior bokah and crispy images and Cinematic footage 👌👌
this is what im thinking.. once you know what youre doing with photography this is the most practical lens imaginable.. and look at the quality omg.. its an L but is so small it doesnt have room for the red ring... it has 15 ELEMENTS IN 12 GROUPS!!! WTF...
@@thothheartmaat2833 go for it and you'll never regret I must say 😊
I just got this for boudoir shoots in small bedrooms. Gives me that little extra width I need in limited space where a 50 is just a bit too much. Such a great value for so much performance!
I love this lens! I got it for a fast prime for my Canon M and M3 so I use it with the adapter and overall am very pleased. When I travel and go out to dine with my wife it is my go to lens for food photography, great speed in low light, contrast and resolution as well as nice bokeh in the background especially if there are some candles of soft lighting there. For the price it really can't be beat especially if you want to travel as light as possible. With the Canon M system, this and the 22mm are great lenses for when you are out and about.
I bought a 50mm stm literally as a bodycap when i bought my cinema camera. Now I use it more than my tokina 11-16. It really needs a mattebox like you pointed out. The histogram really pops when you protect the lens from stray light.
Perfect lens for walking around and long carries. Street scenes, Portraits, Landscapes, it may not be the best in a particular category, but it offers a great range of uses for a go-to lens. You might miss any telephoto, and on a cropped sensor there is some sacrifice in compositions with taller or wider scenes. But I find those limitations are not too bad compared with the advantages. You have to work within it's area. On my 77D it makes a DSLR a great street camera (unless you're a front-shirt pocket type of person). For the price, a superb choice and I'm fully glad I bought this lens. For street photography, I think the 50mm doesn't offer any significant advantage, may as well go pancake.
you are the best lens reviewer, period.
This little lens has never let me down.
Using it with 5D classic, wonderful lens.
sergtrav Same here. Works great. :D
Wonder if the 24 pancake will work great on a FF
The 24mm is a EF-S lens so won't fit on a full frame unless you find some way to adapt it. Even if you did adapt it I think you'd probably get some pretty heavy vignetting so wouldn't really be worth it, in my opinion.
@@Macc2356 and on a crop sensor 24mm is comparable to 38mm anyway. So there's not much difference.
agree :D even if the comment is old, nice and very sharp on the 5d mk1
I have this lens speedboosted for my Canon M50. Loving the 45mm equivalent FOV and decently bright aperture
I love your reviews mate, easy to take away from. I always come to your videos before buying a lens
Hi,
I put this 40mm stm on my Canon FILM full frame camera, that way you get a compact street camera, getup and go camera and film colors or B&W, sharp images. The results very good images and low cost.
It's a /really/ nice lens on full-frame
Love the 40, I've used it with my 1Ds, 1DmkII, 70D, 6D and 5Ds and the images are always sharp and in focus and because of its small size and light weight it's hand holdable in low light!
SONY take note...you can have a cheap lens...and have excellent optics
david appleton It's a shame that Sony is killing it in innovating with their bodies but their native lenses are so expensive and very limited. Thank God for adaptors I suppose.
having 40mm with 6D, help me to shoot more and made it feels like a normal point and shoot camera.
I use this lens at my Canon 100D, love it, small and sharp.
Great review
I much prefer the 40mm over the 50mm in my opinion. Never let me down with results
I use this on my Canon RP with adapter. It's at least as sharp as the RF 50 1.8 at comparable apertures, and not much bigger on the adaptor. I've used the first gen sigma art 35 1.4 and wasn't impressed, at working apertures it was a bit sharper, maybe worse corners, worse autofocus accuracy at distance, and it weighs like a pound more. Wish Canon had a cheaper 40 and nicer 50 1.8 like nikon does on Z mount.
Dude, you have the best camera equipment reviews ever. Your voice is clear and precise and you're very knowledgeable. Wish I'd have known of you when I was still living in Wales. Cheers, man
I’m seriously confused because I was browsing Amazon and saw that your video is the product video for the 40mm.
If it only were f2 or larger I'd never have to look at another lens again. ;)
Alexander Hugestrand I agree!
Alexander Hugestrand f/2.8 is plenty as it’s a semi wide angle lens anyway.......stopping down from f/4-f/8 is plenty depth of focus. F/2 wouldn’t add much in terms of quality
f/2,8 is still quite big for non-pro use
You need the voigtlander ultron sl f/2
!!
Wonderful review as always..
My favorite lenses to carry around daily is the 24, 40 and 50 stms. So small and compact. They take up hardly any room!!!!
KentSpain85 do i need to buy the 40 if i already have both 50 and 24?
Sal Zulal I enjoy the 40mm. But the 50 is too zoomed in for me on my 80D. The 40 is really good.
no
I have recently purchased the 40mm and am using it on my canon700d.It appears to be everything you say it is.I also have the 50mm F1.8 and it too is a great lens although the auto focus leaves a bit to be desired. Thanks for a great review.
"Have fun making up your minds" haha. Perfect.
I almost made up my mind and he had to end it off like that😂
This is a great lens for video work too. Really sharp footage. Love it
Hi Chris,
As always, I have enjoyed this review. One thing that's not quite clear to me is why you turn on peripheral illumination and CA control when reviewing Canon lenses? AFAIK, peripheral and CA control only work when shooting JPGs, so a RAW file would still show all the aberrations, so you're not getting a clear picture as to the optical quality of the lens. Additionally, it makes it difficult to compare Canon lenses to third party lenses since peripheral illumination and CA control cannot be turned on with third party lenses.
I think it would be a better methodology to keep all of the electronic aides turned off when reviewing all lenses.
Keep up the good work. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
TBH, it's just what I ended up doing - there are pros and cons to testing either way. It might be better to turn off the corrections in camera, but then again, most serious photographers will correct them in editing anyway
I agree that most photographers will correct them in editing. I'm saying that strictly from the testing methodology point of view, you want consistency. By turning everything off you're able to see what the actual lens is doing and you're not biasing your comparisons against third party lenses.
Great little lens and works well on the a7rii with the metabones adapter.
I love pancake lenses... they let me take the dslr with me in the spare compartment of my laptop bag. So as a companion for business travel The dslr + pankake winns while a 50mm1.8 always winns when I am out shooting with photo gear only...
hi, thank you for great review, . I would like to ask if 40/2.8 is not
easy to autofocus damage, because front element extends out. This was
problem for 50/1.8 II and STM, but they had bajonet for lenshood, which
really protected the front element. Canon 40 can have lens hood, but it
extends with front element so its not a real manual protection, only
from sun reflections. Thanks for your answer.
Just found this lens in one of my camera bags! Not sure why I purchased it due to having a 35mm lens but I've got it.
if I could get a 35mm pancake of this quality at this price I'd be so happy. The 40mm is just every so slightly too close and slow for my to pick it over a 50 1.8.
Wabajak13 I have the 40/2.8mm, it appears to be a good lens, I wonder if Uve gotten a 35mm. Is the 5mm difference good enough as I find the 40mm angle too small in group shots of even for a group of 3 picture. I'm wondering if I should get a 35mm like the 35 f2 is? I prefer the no-zoom lenses. I've a 5dm2. Thnx.
Delfin Delphi Miranda well I don't have a 35mm prime, but have used it on zoom lenses and it's ever so slightly wider. The main thing for me is that 35mm lenses usually have much wider apertures.
I brought the 24 APS C STM, 35 IS STM APS C and 50 STM to use with 80d. i would prefer 35 2.8 STM full frame
Hi Chris, many thanks for the review! Recently I purchased a Canon EOS 650 for analog film photography. This pancake lens is also very nice to work with this vintage camera from the beginnings of the EOS era. Regarding the contrast loss in direct bright light you showed in this review: There’s also a special lens hood for this lens available by Canon for its filter thread of 49mm, which I purchased, too. Do you still take photos on an analog film? I prefer the focal length of 40mm over the 50mm in most situations. Best wishes, Ralf
I barely ever shoot on analogue film. I would make videos about it but they won't get enough views to be worth the time and investment
i’m thinking about putting this on a (film camera) Canon Elan 7E. would be a very lightweight autofocus beast, and the 7E is small enough and cheap enough that the combination makes for less anxiety should it break or be stolen.
My 40mm arrived not long ago I’ve been snapping round the house with it, it’s a white one and is extremely sharp, with it being a white one on my 6D it doesn’t look serious but it is it looks more like a toy lens.
We don't normally think of 2 lenses only 10mm apart in focal length as being quite different in purpose or execution but here, it seems the right answer isn't either/or, but rather "both." I like the 50 for flexibility but that's really "tool talk," because creatively I'm better off with a 40mm. And apart from size, I also value the 40's performance. The flexibility of the 50's ƒ/1.8 comes with a noticeable performance hit.
Don’t forget the third part of the pancake trinity, the 24mm. You get these three and you have some nice, compact prime lenses. 😉
When you can find the 40mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.8 in excellent condition for $100 each just buy both.
Hey, I recently got a Canon 70D and got the sigma 17-50 2.8 lens for pretty cheap. I don't see any advantage for me right now in getting this Canon 40mm (or am I wrong). On the other hand the 50mm 1.8 might be worth getting for the 1.8.
I'm looking to get a few other lenses such as the Canon 50-250 and possibly the Canon 10-18. Tell me what you think and if I'm wrong/should consider something else.. Thanks!
"review the living day light " hahaha
Hi Chris, in case you still have the lens , will you be able to test it on high res body like 5DSR or R5 ?
I bought a white copy on ebay for 90 € in south corea. Very good lens.
Great review! Would you recommend this over the Canon 35mm f2 IS USM since they both have similar field of view. I normally shoot stopped down.
If you don't need image stabilization then the 40mm lens will be great
Merhaba bir sorum olacaktı
APSC makinede speedbooster 0.71x ile 40mm ve 50mm görüş alanı nekadar olur
thanks
That lens is good for T6i camera ?
Hi Chris. Thanks again for the review. Have you ever tried speed boosted this lens on your new M6 Mk2? What would the image quality be? Thanks.
hello chris
is it possible for you to review sigma 150mm F2.8 macro?
regards
Umair
thank you
could you please review the vintage telephoto lens sigma ef 400mm f5.6 autofocus?
A fantastic review of an great lense! Thank you!
This lens was my choice for my new 80d camera. Thank you for this comparison video!
Hi, i hesitate to buy the 80d over the 77d. Are you happy with your new 80d camera?
I have one and this lens is very good considering the price and size. I have both the 40mm and 50mm 1.8 stm. I was gonna sell one of these but having a hard time deciding which one. The 40 is very sharp and small but slower 2.8 the 50 has 1.8 but older optics.
Sweeris same problem for me
I had two 50 STMs and older II and one STM, which is still mine is crazy sharp from wide open. Other two had to be closed to 2.2 or 2.5 to be sharp. AF is not great on those STMs and most of my problems comes from that .I mostly carry 24 STM on the little 760d and its good combo...
Great, now i have another lens to choose from, either yongnuo 35mm f2, 50mm f1.8 or this lens for my first prime lens for everyday use. If i have a full frame camera i would without doubt pick the 50mm f1.8, but then with my camera i think it will be very tight. Any advice on this?
It's up to you. Personally I'd go with the Canon lens simply because I don't like the quality of Yongnuo
Christopher Frost Photography wow thanks for the reply, I have decided to go with the canon 24mm f2.8 for my travel lens. what do you think?
Sure, that would be a more versatile option
I have the 40mm. Very sharp lens indeed and very handy to bring during travel. I'm still saving for 24-70 f/2.8 tho haha.
How can improve the speed of the autofocus on my m3 I tried this lens in the shop on m5 and was quick when I get home on m3 it’s really slow the autofocus and sometime is not working at all, in low light conditions there is any way I can improve that? Please help. I bought this lens because I was impressed by your review.
The M3 is a lot slower to autofocus than the M5 because the M5 has a totally different AF system
Which one would be a better choice for APS-C Sensor cameras... 40 mm. or 50 mm. F/1.8???
It's still not quite clear for me...
24mm 2.8 (AoV aprox 40mm FullFrame) and the 50mm 1.8 (alternative bigger and expensive 18-35 1.8 Sigma + the 50mm)
Nice video! Could you make a video about the Canon EF-S 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 IS USM.
I am watching video's about this lens on youtube, but there are not so many video's about it. And your tests are exellent. Great job!!
( Sorry, my English is not great. I am from the Netherlands and i
I am 15 years old.☺)
I will when I can get a hold of one for a reasonable price :-)
Okay, Thank You!!
for canon eos 60D 24mm and 40mm wich one is better in general
Josue Barralla depends what you shoot. 24mm is about 38mm on your camera while the 40mm is 64mm.
Go with the 24mm
i have 60D whats the best lens
For portrait photography and kind of cinematic style? The 50 1.8 or the 40 2.8?
That rubber surface coating on the focus ring looks very worn out. Pity given this isnt a very old lens.
2Old4Toys Nvm. You're correct
I have canon 77D I'm confused in 24mm 2.8 or 40mm 2.8, please give me a best reason , which one i buy
Think about this way. The camera has a sensor that is 22.3 mm wide. If you want to shoot something that 2 m wide and want 2.23 m exactly to the image then with 24 mm you need to shoot at 2.4 m. With 40 mm you need to go back to 4 m. (If meters are hard, think of yards). So the 24 mm gives about same in the image horizontally that is the distance. This means that it is nice when shooting inside. In a square room you get almost the whole opposite wall if you have your back on the wall. It is a nice general purpose lens. In the 70s when compact cameras were sold without zoom the typical lens was just 38 mm which on 36 mm frame is basically same as 24 mm on a 22.3 mm sensor. So the 24 mm is a good general purpose lens It works well both inside and outside. It may not be ideal. Inside 15-18 mm would be better, outside maybe 28-35 mm.
The 40 mm is much tighter. When shooting inside it likely will feel too tight. When shooting outside it likely is perfectly OK on street photography etc. Shooting buildings could be harder. The 40 mm is more idea on full frame.
You have the 18-55 mm kit zoom. Set it to 24 mm and 40 mm and took some photos without using the zoom. See how it woks.
IMO since the whole point of this kind of a lens is to travel light so yo likely will not carry other lenses so IMO having the 24 mm is better. For example the 50 mm f/1.8 is a lens that you carry in addition to something else like the kit or the 24 mm. Of course it is not far fetched to get both and have one in camera and another in the pocket. Also a combination of, say, 55-250mm and 24 mm is good covering most cases.
Nice review. Have you ever tried it with Sony a6300/a6500 with Sigma MC-11? Thank you.
That's an extremely specific request! No, I haven't
so let me clarify.. this EF-s lens meant for cropped sensor canon cameras.. can be mounted to a full frame canon camera too? I mean EOS mount..? thanks for your reply.
Nope. Canon's EF-S lenses have a device at the back to stop them from fitting on to a full-frame camera
Christopher Frost Photography so how did you mount it to a full frame Canon?
This is not an EF-S lens. You might be confusing it with the 24mm EF-S lens version
OH!! I have this 40mm.. all along I thought it was an EF-s LOL!! (I am actually a Nikon user :) ... but I have a Canon T3i :) Thanks!!
I had no idea until today....here I am with a 5d Mark iii and wanting to have a smaller walk around (i have an 85 1.2). I'm picking this up tomorrow! Shit i really had no idea 🤣🤣
I was given this little beauty, but only own a Olympus mft camera. Is there ans way to focus and change aperture, without a canon camera? :(
Veganes Spanferkel Babe Yes, I have a comlite adaptor for my Olympus mft to work on my Canon lenses. There is apperture control, lens meta data transfer and even auto focus. Very handy.
Veganes Spanferkel Babe You should sell it and get a proper mft lens imo.. Cuz to use autofocus and in camera aperture etc you need something like Metabones Speedbooster which cost 3x the cost of the lens.
What do you mean when you say "adapted" it to work on an aps-c? I thought EF lenses were totally compatible with crop?
He's using mirrorless. EF lenses work on Canon SLR cameras, but mirrorless cameras use a different mount. So he adapts it for his Canon M3. Any Rebel-To-80D crop SLR will work fine without an adapter.
I have this Lens and the sharpness of the image is second to non.........a few have commented how they wish it was f/2 I cannot see a reason to this. I usually stop down to around f/5.6- f/8 and any lower tends to render a softer image.
Lower apertures don't always tend to equal softness. Thought I'd point it out in case you didn't know.
You said 50, I’ll get 50. No questions asked.
Will you be updating/reviewing the 24mm pancake lens also?
I've already reviewed it
If this is mounted on an EOS M series with the adapter it makes it 65MM? would you do a video I assume u have an adapter.Sorry Im stupid I did not wait till the middle.Which adapter did you use?
The EOS M is an APS-C sensor camera, so, you always multiply by 1.6x for the full-frame equivalent. So 40x1.6 = 64mm equivalent.
Yes close, which adapter did you use please.
Yes it is 65 mm equivalent. This means that is has same angle of view as 65 mm would have on a full frame camera. The lens still is 40 mm and nothing changes in it. Especially the adapter just puts the lens at the proper distance. Each lens had a specific distance to which they need to be mounted. For EOS M it is 18 mm, for EOS DSLRs it is 44 mm. For Nikon it is 46.5 mm.
I hat loose terminology like the lens becomes something else. No it does not. Essentially if you make 10 cm x 15 cm print with a crop camera it is same as if you took the image on a full frame camera with same lens and printed it on 16 cm x 24 cm and the used scissors to cut 10 cm x 15 cm from the center.
If you understand that the lens never changes to something else you then realize why, say, 24 mm is always 24 mm no matter if it is for APS-C or full frame (if you have APS-C). There are too many misconceptions based on incorrect understanding of the videos by Tony Northrup. These may led to people buying incorrect lenses.
Hi Chris
I Have a canon m3 and im planning to buy new lens.
Which one do you think ust the best one?
Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens, Canon EF 50mm f1/8 ii STM lens, or Yongnuo 35mm f/2?
For an EOS M3? I'd go for the 50mm lens, but you will need the EF-EF-M adaptor.
Hi Christopher. I reckon this mm size is not suitable for vlogging? I am planning to buy the new eos m5 and would like to only carry pancakes with me for obvious transportation reasons. What is your opinion about this? Thanks a lot for your vids :) All the love from Austria!
The M5 is an APS-C camera, so you'd probably find 40mm a tight angle for vlogging. Far better would be the excellent EF-M 22mm f/2. Incidentally, the M5 might not be the best camera for vlogging - the screen only folds downwards for its 'selfie' mode, and if your camera is on a tripod, it'll be in the way
I know, it is a fair point. I still have troubles finding a suitable camera that offers high quality image and audio and the chance to swap lenses. The EOS M3 struggles a bit in low light from what I have seen and autofocus speed is not as good as the 5 version. Canon continues making half compromise products leaving us always with enough room for us to question everything and maybe overbuying items just to maximize their sales :) However... not to sound like a buffoon, but I might have figured out a quick release plate design that might move the camera a bit to the side and let a bit more of the screen past the tripod. I know it is still not optimal but I have no other solution. Anyway as always thanks to take the time to answer always to my comments :)
This is not a pancake on EOS M5. You are forgetting the huge adapter. This is bigger than the kit lens on M5.
camerasize.com/compact/#684.680,684.439.2,684.349,ha,t
The kit zoom also has IS which is mandatory. Also the weight is to consider. The adapter weights 108 grams even without the tripod mount. So together they take 230 grams when the kit lens is 130 grams.
But if one wants to travel light a compact camera is better.
Great review Christopher. What would you suggest between this and the 24mm STM for a general purpose, all around lens to keep it much of the times on on an APS-C camera?
The 24mm lens would be better for general purpose as it gives a wider angle
Something happened to my 70D, Its not detecting any EF-S lenses, EF lenses (1st and 3rd Party) works like a charm. Any Idea what happened?
Hmm, no idea I'm afraid. What a strange problem.
Great review!
I love Border Collies. My last 4 dogs have been them.
Can pancake 24 f2.8 use on Full frame ?
Yes, it is specifically for FF (though works also on crop). The 24 mm is equivalent for crop only.
No. The 24mm "EF-S" f2.8 STM pancake is designed for APSC format cameras while the "EF" lenses are designed for both Full frame and APSC format cameras. You can't use "EF-S" series lenses on your full frame camera body. You can only use "EF" lenses on your full frame camera body. These EF lenses usually marked with a red dot.
I don't know what to buy -_-. I'm looking for my first Prime lens ever. i'm thinking if I'm gonna get the Yongnuo 35MM F2, Canon 40mm f2.8, or the Canon 50mm f1.8. please help
Get the Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM
Me also, looking for the best prime lens..i love to shoot portrait and street
I love the sharpness but the chromatic aberration kills this lens for me. I use a 100D and a 7D. At the same time the second hand value is so low that there is no point in selling it.
I have an 80d
pls help I got some lenses and it's zoomed in by default, I have to stand 10 feet away from something I'm trying to take a picture of and I can't get certain angles because it's zoomed in so much, I got the 50mm 1:1.8 stm
It sounds like you need a zoom lens, rather than a fixed 50mm lens. Google 'Zoom lenses'
Christopher Frost Photography thanks for the reply, is there a particular distance? or whatever you would call it, I need a lens to take pics of items that are up close like about a 6 inches away, you'll understand what I mean if you see one of my thumbnails on my channel, you can see its very up close but I used my phone
I think you might need to get a cheap Canon kit lens and play around with it for a while, to get used to focal distances. The Canon 18-55 IS STM would be a good start
I think you are misusing the term "zoomed". Zooming means adjusting focal length on a zoom lens. These are prime lenses that do not zoom, they are what they are. You should probably check the EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM. With that you get horizontally almost as much in the picture as is the distance.
Do you focus on the rule of thirds?
I focus on my subject
Christopher Frost Photography sorry if my question is not clear. what I mean to say is while the center is sharp, we don't always want our subject in the center. so we focus and recompose. does this mean in wide open we will have softer image?
It depends on how sharp your lens is toward the edges. This lens is sharp from corner to corner so it should be fine :-)
Best lens e ever!
what about the vignetting?
Watch the video. 04:05
Or get both the 40 and 50mm. The original 40mm F2.8 was Pentax I believe, so this is a Pentax clone. Both work well, the 40 for general work and the 50 is more creative as you said. STM is not good for astrophotography. Great Vid
Can I use it on my 5D mark 1?
Đình Chương Lê Yes
my fav lens is a 50-100 sigma 1.8
nice review!
nice review
Would you recommend this for headshots ?
Only if I were shooting on an APS-C camera. Otherwise an 85mm lens would be better
It's unfortunate this lens isn't as sharp on APS-C cameras. Great review though!
It's still pretty sharp :-)
I've used this lens on a 5d, 5d2 and 550D. Excellent on the crop and super sharp. The little lens is a gem in terms of sharpness.. performed as well sharpness wise as the 70-200 f4L is 👍
im absolutely buying this lens but you gotta watch christopher frost before you buy a lens...
What happened? This used to be a lens review channel, now he's reviewing breakfast food!
Mikhail Campbell Says the guy with a soup brand for a surname
Mikhail Campbell Right back at you. No one asked YOU to be a bitch in the first place.
Mikhail Campbell Firstly, it's nicknamed the "Pancake" lens. Secondly, do you see any real breakfast food in the video? That should've been your first clue into letting you know this was a joke.
Will it work with 1300D?
Yup
40mm or 50mm on an APS-C camera?
Depends what kind of photography you're trying to do
@@christopherfrost portrait
how many lenses do you own ??
Which are those ?
My kit bag is always changing - that's why I've never made a 'what's in my kit bag' video
How about your current Kit ?
&Would love to watch some "What's in my lense collection" :)
I just said, it keeps changing - I'd have to make a new one every month to be up-to-date
anyway it's good to talkin to you and I really like your Videos its really Informative and precise; Good Job Keep It Up :) and merry christmas
How does it stand to 50 1.4?
Watch my review of that lens, and you'll see :-)
I hope Sony will release something similar (in price too) in the near future
sharp
Thanks.
Pity Canon introduced this lens so late in the life of the EF mount.
I'm still confused between these two..
Has anyone used this on a film camera? Any comments on it?
