I love the new propulsion sound on these trains.
A lot of trains in japan have similar propulsion systems to this one so I'm familiar with how it sounded.
Zuramaru this and the metro north are the only competent railroads in the

I saw a m9 nonstop when I was on my way to the city. I was in the train to pennstation rush hour so I didn’t get to video tape it because I thought it was a regular M7.
Saw these in the Kawasaki yard in Yonkers Friday...love the new stripes
1:22 ... everybody dies as they step out on to the high voltage rail.
There is a beige cap running along the third rail. You would have to wedge your foot inbetween the cap and the steel bar carrying the voltage. Even then if you are wearing shoes, i believe there is no guaranteed shock.

I love the body style of the M7 and am glad the M9 resembles it as well. The cars look great and the paint is a sharp touch. Hoping they are happy with all the tests and can begin rolling some into service.

Heard today that trains on the Babylon Branch would be making extra stops at those stations common with the Long Beach Branch. And as a YTer myself, I made sure to add a "like"
What station valley stream? I know it stops at Lyn and there is like one that already stops at valley stream.

The M9 sounds like the R179 and the R179 sounds like the 7000 series train's in DC

Nope. Those are Mitsubishi traction motors, whereas the R179s have Bombardier traction motors.
EthanTheBklynBoy_666 _6 the sound is quite different. Very similar in the approach sound but there’s no obvious noise like the M7s it seems
@@nygrasshole Either the motors used in the M7s had been discontinued (for new trains) or the MTA decided to go with more recent motors, likely based on how they performed on Metro-North (the M8s have the same motors).
sonicboy678 interesting. You definitely know when a M7 is coming for sure. Once they reach under 30 mph they start making a very distinctive noise. Then at 12 mph the noise dips down a few notes. I’ve sat in the spare conductor seat before and tried to observe the speedometer gauge they have and coordinate it with the sound. These new M9s sound quieter. I’ve never seen or rode the M8. Going to check them out online now

My goodness just comparing and hearing these two together (m7s & m9s) will be something to look forward too. And Metro North has been replacing the seat fabrics with new fabrics on alot of cars so I know for a fact LIRR is in the process of doing it too

They are M9s but the inside is basically nothing new but a couple of new tv screens I'm guessing to post station or line information

@Xman Hunter I know someone who's a Senior Locomotive Engineer on the LIRR and one of the top 10 on the roster. Not even he knows as of yet.
I basically asked a similar question and that results in one of the biggest problems on the LIRR, Lack of Communication.

@Curtis J. Livingston, III That is your problem. Typical American, thinking the world ends at the boarders with the Atlantic Ocean to the East and the Pacific to the West. The world is bigger than the USA. Look towards: France, Japan, China, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Russia, Serbia, etc... "It's Electric"!
nice trainset, I didn't know they can do at grade crossing with a electric 3rd rail, you usually do it with diesel trainset or overhead powerline.
On LI they always have. Break in the rails at crossing. Other cars are pulling power where there is still rail.
These must be the new cars that are due for service in 2021.

Interesting but behind UK. Check out the new 755 class.
But these sets, and the current equipment as well have well padded seats with head rests. My observation based on videos on YT show your UK commuter trains tend to have wafer thin "ironing board" seats, suitable only for short trips and skinny Gen Z bodies.Our equipment also has a handicapped accessible toilet in every other rail car in the MU set.
@@jackmorrison7379 why is every carriage a driver carriage? And why are the carriages not open standard and easy walk-through? It does seem a bit behind the times!
@@angus504 Very simple. We have crash integrity structural standards different from other places. Open design I assume (I'm not an expert) does not meet those standards. You can walk the length of the train. The doors open at each end for passage.

By the time they finish "testing" them, these cars will already be showing the water stains on the sides of the stainless steel finish. These cars have been ordered since 2013. Will be out of date before they are ever put in service. What a long drawn-out process. [The next generation of commuter rail cars is coming to the Long Island Rail Road. In 2013, the MTA awarded a contract to Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. to design and build the new fleet of M9 rail cars for the LIRR.]

Rich w/ it means testing, so people should not allowed to enter the train. When it's on service, people are allowed to enter.

Harry Gruber They didn't open on both sides. They opened on the off platform side only to prevent passengers from boarding while testing.
Damn this looks similar to the M4 El trains in Philly except these are commuter rail. I wonder if they're the same company brand?

@@nygrasshole Our commuter regional rail looks similar too as the M4 and M9 except they have pantographs instead of third rail power.
KaM G I bet. Because the previous generation of M7s were made by Bombardier and the Kawasaki look just like them. The rail companies must tell them how to design. The M3s from the early 80s (some still in service on Long Island) look way different then the M7 and M9
@@nygrasshole Yeah Philly's M3 made by Budd had the similar older NYC subway look from the 80's too. That's interesting! The Orange line subway and trolleys here are made by Kawasaki, but our commuters are by Hyundai. Lol
Maybe we will see these trains in revenue service by the end of the year, maybe we won't. The M9 cars were designed before the federal government made PTC installment on all trains mandatory. The LIRR is having a hard time making the PTC fit into the M9's.

Do LIRR cars pass 3rd rail voltage across the intercar connection? It looks like the 3rd rail gap at the crossing is longer than the length of a car.
I would guess so, since the traction motors still sound when passing over junctions, but don't quote me.
Good question, there some spots where the ventilation turns off. Even the lights on the m3.
They do not. When a car is off third rail it's on battery. A technique the railroad uses to keep AC/etc running is to apply 3-5 lbs of pressure on the brake shoes of a moving train, when traversing a 3rd rail gap, and then using the friction of the brake application as electrical power.
That's why when riding on M7 trains you often feel a "pull and tug" sensation through interlockings/junctions and crossings.

The design looks really old fashioned compared to here in Europe more a train from 1979 not 2019
That explains why I find these trains rather attractive. Unfortunately the newish livery with the yellow and blue 'flash' looks to have been designed by amateurs -probably within the MTA - who consider themselves to be talented commercial artists.....yet obviously know nothing about design. There are a lot of people like that in government organisations in the UK.... and in the US too, it appears.
But the M3 are the old fashioned trains from the 1980s. Those are the old trains and look nothing like the M9.
Honestly a ton of the new European trains look horrendous.
@@uk-martin4905 If I'm being honest, I prefer this livery. The old one they had planned (solid yellow on the cab ends) was too garish.
I agree the design looks incredibly outdated as well as like it's trying to scare commuters away from the train instead of onboard. Like why that silver surface? Doesn't look appealing to get on board at all. And those tiny windows, you barely get any daylight in, wtf? And also wouldn't it be a good idea with bigger, double doors on a train like this considering it's an urban, high frequency, S train like system.
I hope they made the head rests more comfortable.

What? LIRR has been in service since the late 1800s. The LIRR uses 3rd rail for electric power.

These trains seem to be still a bit behind the times. I'm surprised that every carriage has a driver cab? Do they not make full carriages or are they testing them all together? Just seems a bit strange that you can't walk the length of the train!
Also, they're not open walk through like you get in the UK!
For an urban rail, check out the London Overground class 710 which started running in May. That's how a suburban train should be designed surely?
They operate in 2 car sets with the cabs at the ends. They are most commonly lashed up in 6, 8 or 10 car sets and are broken down as needed. I've seen shuttle comprising of only one pair. Within the pairs are diaphragms. However, you can still walk the length of the train via the cab ends. There are 2 sets of doors at the cab ends, one that will lead outside to the next train car set and before that is the door to the vestibule, the interior of the cab. The driver's controls are on one side of the vestibule, so when the cab is not in operation, the door closes off cab controls cleverly.
You can walk the length of the train and this has been a consistent feature of the EMU equipment sets going back decades. This is for safety reasons should the train need to be evacuated in an emergency. As to the cabs for the operators see the reply of "Irish Phoenix" which explains it nicely. As to open walk through design not being sought it may have something to do with equipment crash standards and structural resistance to crushing per FRA regulations.
@@laxingpiper23 Yeah that's a standard design even in the UK in regard of the vestibules. My comment was just based on seeing so many Driver motor standards on one train but if they often only run as 2 car units then fair enough.

They look pretty awesome. As a commuter I wonder why LIRR won’t order electric double deckers since quite a few platforms can’t handle over 8 cars. I love getting a double decker because every row of seats is 2 so there’s more room

I forget where the link is but I read an article detailing why double deckers are actually less efficient for storing passengers, as well as boarding and unloading. As someone who takes the Long Beach branch but has to connect to a double decker at Jamaica for service to Penn, trying to get off those things are a nightmare

These are Electric Multiple Units. The MTA used to use 3 car married sets for some of the EMUs on the New Haven Line for Metro-North, but found that the operation wasn't very efficient, considering that both MTA railroads tend to run various size consists depending on the line, direction and time of day. Also, since they are almost semi permanent pairs, if one has an issue, you lose the other. If you have even more in a married set, then those too are out of service. Since unlike NYCT which has vastly more rolling stock and generally runs fixed length trainsets regardless, both MTA heavy railroads have much smaller rolling stock numbers and have to be more frugal with how they allocate their stock to maintain adequate service. Also, since the railroads run multiple conductors on many trains, having the extra operator cabs allows them to have their own work space, spaced out along the train. Since many of the trains platform on both sides during their run, having the operator cabs butted against each other allows the conductors to swap sides quickly.
Basic units are having 1 motor coaach and 1 trailer coach.

No, that horn the Arrow 3 has is an AA2 horn. This train, the M9, uses a K2H.
