FULL BUILD start to finish 1954 VW OVAL WINDOW this video is for the metalwork of the quarter panel. Welding up all the rusted out holes. Авто/Мото
thanks for your comments and likes. All turning out really nice so far and will continue.
Absolutely wonderful work plus you share your knowledge. Not only entertaining but educational too! This car will be absolutely fantastic!
My Titanium 170 is really picky with the brand of wire. I now only buy wire from my gas supply outlet. The car is progressing nicely. Thanks for all the videos.
towards the 36 min you show using the needle nose vice grips and like a crescent wrench to turn. learned something new, good idea of how to twist the old metal off...Dave
thank for the wire tips great video
As I was watching these on the '54, I thought I saw you putting in that little bit of extra effort. Then now you said this is going to be more high-end. Awesome, that makes me happy. This is going to be a very valuable car. I'm always impressed how you just get after it & get things done, but sometimes I have wished you spent just a tiny bit little more time. That work you have done on the Ghia blows me away, & the bucket truck is a f*ckin miracle, & that beetle that was rusted in half oh my God. God bless you for fixing these cars.
the finished product will be really nice. believe me.
@@Mikefngarage I sure it will.
liked how you used the needle noise vise grips to roll off the old metal the seam under the hood . what a great tip, plus showing us how you form the panels thanks
Roll it up like a can of spam. is my old saying. I just cringe when guys use a spot weld driller.
@@Mikefngarage I noticed this as well and will be using this technique myself. Who’d have thought you’d be educating people on the other side of the world to you. This really is the best VW resto channel on RUclips. As always, thanks, Mike.

Looking good Mike👍
Man. This vid and the last one of the dash top cutout were great. It’s great to watch you put this car back together. I thought California was full of old vws rusting slowly in fields and junkyards. I guess there getting herder to find.
You can really tell the difference with that different gauge wire.
a few years back many of the cities put up ordinances to get rid of old cars in peoples yards. Code enforcement got rid of hundreds of cars in peoples backyards and fields. Now it is slim pickings except in some rural towns.
You can tell from the video how much better the .023 wire works. Limping along is no fun.
burned holes like crazy with the .030. like my 220 mig
Nice job Mike.
These welds are some 1000 IQ shit. Thanks for the tips Mike!
You don’t see problems only solutions.
Bad A.. fab work once again!!! Kicking A..!!!!
Thanks for the welding tips. I don’t have much experience welding and tips like this are very helpful.
I just weld hex nuts on the inside. Hide it with a little seam sealer. Good as new. Or if it’s rusted out at a bolt hole. I make a patch, and drill and weld the nut before I weld in to the panel.
I like you "value proposition" pragmatism in work and effort.
Nice Work Mike 😀
Great job Mike, great videos!! V Dubs
Hi Mike, it comes and great progress and also nice padge work. see you at the next one.HCS
Thanks for the video, amazing work, learning all the time as I watching
I am working on a 67 now, perfect thinking out loud in your vids really helps me decide how to move on. Thank you. Well done!
fix the quarters always easier. and easy to get perfect hardly visible once the fender is on.
txs for sharing...
Guys like us are tortured by perfection, an old drywaller mud man told me nothing is square, plumb, level or flat they just create an illusion.
Great progress! Thank You for the video 😊
Boss work that panel up front looks the dogs mate 👍
The indication of time spent was very helpful Kind regards Alex
Your up close patch work video is so helpful... Thanks!
Thanks Mike ! For turning me on to Fitzee Fabrications ! Just saw his grinding welds on sheet metal !!!!!!! Good Sh== . A lot of the thing you are doing on the VW's are the same rust problams on all old cars ! The more i learn from you it looks like it is a feel you get for it over time ! I hope i get that so i can get back on my 42 cad ! I stoped when i got to the sheet metal ! Thank You for your help and time ! Mike L
One of the other subscribers told me about him then I realized we use a lot of the same techniques. He does a better metal finsh though. I have always used multiple pieces of metal to make my own panels. Much easier than shaping the metal same concept fitzee does.
Thanks for good insight on the front panel work. Brings back memories when I did mine, used 19 gauge / 1mm for patches.. It has been some years now but watched your videos back then too 🙂
I consider you an Artist. I know this because I own 12 different planishing hammers snapon, proto, Sykes pickavan and a couple of European unnamed bouging hammers.
wow those planishing hammers are cool.
nice work as always mike !
Love your videos. Very informative. Sorry that you ran into problems with the wire but that was extremely informative. I learned so much. Best wishes.
great info for me and the 56 oval coming up ;)
👍 you make it look so easy, but that’s your years of experience
Subscribed!
thanks Man check out some of the last years footage it is the best stuff.
Great video Mike. Those repairs were not easy. Great job👍
I ordered all new metal from Wolf. The extra money is worth it when you don't have to spend hours trying to make repairs look correct.
Always great and learning something new.
great work Mike
My brother and I are car guys. People ask us what are favorite car is and we both say VW bug.
Agree about patch rather than replace. My right side quarter was rotten right up to the the dash seam and hinge area, what a B&^%^d to get that seam looking tidy! Lots of welding buildup and grinding down!
Great tips on the nut-serts Mike, I have a few need replacing.
I put links in the video but I am not sure they work in the UK. try them though.
Good stuff Mike! Surprised you didn't replace the defroster vent hoses while it was all open, only $15 for the hoses. Thanks!
I prefer the original ones. they were still in good shape.
I guess it looks pretty much like how you do it. I have. Y body almost done. Next the fenders!🥺
I use a Dremil with cutoff disks to fit my patch’s to the panel. Roughly cut the patch. Cut out part of the damage, start at a corner with a tack weld. Then use the dremil to cut along the patch, get it level, tack, cut some more, tack. Until patch is completely level and tacked, then finish stitch welding the patch.minimal grinding.
Honestly this is the EASIEST kind of welding
Once you understand welding.
Copper or brass block on back makes it even EASIER!
Well done, sir...
Hi Mike: I tried the Harbor Freight Vulcan MIG wire and took it back to the store for a refund. I have been using Lincoln Super Arc L-56 0.023 wire exclusively since.
Don’t we all burn holes? It does suck though.
Vai tomando forma..top é nois Brasil Mir de bom pra ti bom final de semana
LOL you can fix anything yet I cant get my dam head light chrome ring to fit for shit LOL
I have the titanium 200. It's capable of stick and tig. 110 or 220. I've found the 023 wire works much better. I ordered a 10kb roll for 25$ from Amazon. The thinner wire doesn't blow through so much. I started off with 030. Welding inner rockers on my 97 dodge ram plow truck. It was horrible. Welding upside down is not fun anyhow. Lol. Swearing as I burn myself.lol
I've only used it for mig. I need straight argon. I live in an apartment. So I'm pushing my luck welding here. Although no one has complained. I've had compliments on my truck looking and sounding better. I rebuilt my exhaust by saving all the good pieces of exhaust. Just adding pipe to make it past the cab. It is just an old rusty plow truck. Still fun to fix your stuff yourself. I wish I had a garage. Some day...
I also changed the shorty headers for new ones. Not fun. Lol
Oh yea been there I could have never done the underside of the ghia with 030. or my 220 century. hole everywhere.
Hey man remember you could lay wire method that gap/fitup ✌️
Yea I was going to get some gas welding rod but I forgot when I was at the welding supply. I just used some sheet metal on the holes on that one.
@@Mikefngarage i really appreciate your videos
Please keep sharing we all need to absorb your skill! 🤙
The new quarters are actually really nice but they are super expensive. It would be a last resort for me. It’s not super hard to do just a lot more work. I would repair on anything newer than a split that if it’s at all possible.
I have 64 bug and the front quarter panels look rippled on the inside of the trunk. Think this all happened when my dad hit the garage opening. The outside is probably is Bondo to make it look normal. Was thinking about replacing the front clip, but after watching this would you suggest use filler on the inside to make it look back normal? I have been debating on what to do.
I always have worked the metal back into shape. then use some small amounts of filler to finish the job. Long bars and paintless dent removal tools work well. Remove the fenders and keep working on them till they are straight. if you need to make some path panels. Literally you can spend a week on them and be ahead of the game. Front clips are always much harder to replace at this point. hard to find a good donor. to do that best you cut the window pillars and heater channel. Super hard to line up. if your not a Pro probably will ruin the car beyond repair to change the front clip.
try buying some good wire from somewhere other than Harbor Freight. Just sayin.
What gauge is the sheet metal you are using? Working on my 63 rag and cant find anything below 22g maybe 16 but nothing in between. Running a Flux core 125 with .030 wire. Thanks
Harold
Hi, Mike I've been eyeing the 140 titanium welders is that what u have? My first car was a 57 rag top so I'm enjoying ur build, I wish I still had mine. When I'm not working out in my body shop I'm watching ur channel 🙂
AHH! at 42:20 that was the hint I deeded. 0.23!1!
Nice work! But i have a question with ospho how long do you need to wait before you filler/primer it?
Because I heard that ospho and Epoxy primer does not connect very well? is that true and how can i avoid this?
best regards from Austria
I sand it back off for the most part. I only use it to treat the rust. then sand it off 24 hours after application. Under the car I use the other product which I dont use epoxy primer over. I usually use a household oil base under the car sticks better to unsanded or poorly sanded areas.
@@mikesrandomvideos thank you for that information
What does blowing air on the weld do?
weld nuts amzn.to/3EwZe5f
Might like way way smaller wire
23 is what is be using
Way way less heat needed
What gauge is that piece of metal
20 gauge
Thanks
