  • @AsteriskForTheWin

    Pluto’s orbit is highly eccentric, which means it deviates significantly from a perfect circle. As it travels around the Sun, its distance varies dramatically. At its closest point (perihelion), Pluto is approximately 2.76 billion miles (4.44 billion kilometers) away from the Sun. However, at its farthest point (aphelion), it reaches a staggering distance of about 4.67 billion miles (7.5 billion kilometers). This extreme elliptical orbit results in significant temperature variations on Pluto’s surface. When it’s closer to the Sun, its icy surface may experience slight sublimation, releasing volatile gases into its thin atmosphere. Conversely, during its distant aphelion, temperatures plummet to around -375°F (-225°C), freezing any trace of atmosphere and causing the surface to become as hard as rock. Plus, it is the largest object in the Kuiper Belt with 5 moons.

    • @Cosmoknowledge
      @Cosmoknowledge  2 года назад +1

      I'm quoting this "In the end stages of planet formation, a planet (as so defined) will have "cleared the neighbourhood" of its own orbital zone, meaning it has become gravitationally dominant, and there are no other bodies of comparable size other than its satellites or those otherwise under its gravitational influence. The trojans that you are referring to are textbook example of objects under the influence of a planet, in this case Jupiter.

    • @Jellyman1129
      @Jellyman1129 2 года назад +1

      @@Cosmoknowledge Ah yes, but that isn’t in the definition, is it? The definition says “cleared”, which no planet has done. It’s not your job or the IAU’s job to come up with a better definition that isn’t IN the definition. But fine, even if we choose to include that quote in the definition, Pluto still qualifies. New Horizons found a large group of Kuiper Belt Objects that Pluto has specific dynamical effect on, similar to the Jupiter trojan asteroids. Even Pluto’s four small moons are captured from the Kuiper Belt. This is what happens when you have astronomers who are non-experts trying to classify objects in someone else’s field. The planetary scientists, the true experts in the field, simply don’t use it. It is ignored by experts because it’s a faulty definition created by people who don’t study planets! You have the wrong field pretending to be experts in another field and are just making guesswork. 👎🏻

  • @yogidabruh9050
    @yogidabruh9050 6 месяцев назад

    The AUs criteria for the classification of planets literally falls flat given the grand scheme and complex structure of our galaxy and universe as a whole. Considering the relative ease in which their classification can be debated in just our solar system alone, I would put a huge asterisk beside their definition of a planet. 🤦🏾‍♂️

    Funny how none of the 5000+ known exoplanets are required to prove that they've cleared their orbits in order to be considered full planets.

    • @Cosmoknowledge
      @Cosmoknowledge  2 года назад +1

      The exoplanets we have discovered so far are all huge, most of them gas giants. We can't even discover exoplanets the size of Pluto because they are so tiny and puny to be discovered. It's like finding moons.

    • @plucas1
      @plucas1 2 года назад +1

      @@Cosmoknowledge But one of the official criteria for planets is that they clear their orbits. If we can't see things as small as moons or asteroids or small terrestial bodies in their systems, how can we know they've cleared their orbits? I guess they can't officially be planets then.
      Also, Neptune can't be considered a planet either because it has a significant chunk of debris crossing its orbital neighborhood... namely Pluto.
      The problem with Pluto's reclassification is that a handful of OCD astronomers were specifically targeting Pluto alone. They didn't want the official definition of a planet to change to include Kuiper Belt objects like Pluto, so they threw a tantrum until the IAU let them have their way. The reclassification did not have any basis in real scientific observation, its was a bunch of traditionalists trying to cling to to a mostly cultural definition of what was classically considered a planet.
