  • Hey there, diabesties! 🌿 Today, we're diving into the sweet world of sugar substitutes, specifically focusing on artificial and alternative sweeteners. We know that managing your sugar intake can be particularly challenging when living with diabetes, so we hope this video will provide you with some helpful insights.
Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose are chemically created and usually offer a zero-calorie option for those wanting to cut down on sugar. However, their taste profiles can differ, with some leaving a slight bitter aftertaste. In contrast, alternative sweeteners such as stevia, monk fruit, and xylitol are derived from natural sources. They tend to be more expensive than their artificial counterparts but are often praised for their more natural taste and overall health benefits.
Now, let's weigh the pros and cons. Artificial sweeteners have a low glycemic index, which won't spike your blood sugar levels. But remember, they can sometimes cause side effects like headaches or digestive issues. On the other hand, alternative sweeteners also have a low glycemic index and may provide additional health benefits, like antioxidants. However, they can be costlier and affect your digestion if consumed in large amounts.
Here are some tips for incorporating these sweeteners into your diet:
-Start slow and adjust based on your body's response.
-Always read labels to understand what you're consuming.
-Consider using a blend of sweeteners for a more balanced taste.

Hi, Teri in California. Using Ozempic for weight loss, 0.5 dose. Use Stevia, Truvia brand with coffee. Have never been able to get a yes/no on if that counts as sugar. Not diabetic. Have lost 47 lbs. and kept it off over 2 years.

Truvia/Stevia has no glycemic impact, and won't raise your blood sugar. It's also a zero calorie sweetener. It is not sugar, but a naturally derived sweetener extracted from the stevia plant. I hope that helps!

Great question! Most options are a 1:1 ratio, but the package will tell you if you should make any conversions for baking.
