  • Dub demo run through of Softube's Tape Echoes.
    Song used is Old School Dancing by Snakey, on the My Girl Riddim.
    I kept it to one tap as that's the most commonly used set up in dub. Using my Zed R16 in midi mode to control the mix and plug in for the most part. This isn't a review or tutorial, just a straight sound demo.

    Sweet mixing! Do you mix all in the box / DAW?
    Big up

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  3 года назад +2

      Nuff thanks. Main mix is in the box always, I use Cubase. For dubbing, it depends on the project or song. Sometimes it’s all in the box with my mixer in midi mode, so it’s still controlled live, other times, I run audio thru the mixer and use hardware.

    How would you compare this to other tape echoes like Waves J37 for dubbing? Very nice dub and great sounding echo.

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад +2

      Thanks. I don’t have any Waves plugins, not that I have anything against the company, I just never tried them over the years. I do have a number of other delays and they all have a little different sound is all. I’m liking this one, having the reverb built in is always nice, and I’m done adding to my echo plugins for now. I still use others, like Outerspace, TAL Dub X, Valhalla Vintage Delay, Alborosie Dub Station, Satin and Reels. In the moment I might prefer one over another, but when listening, it makes no difference to me, I don’t ever think ‘I should have used a different delay’.

      Bought the Tape Echoes - I’m delighted with this.
      Would you also add a compressor (optical) to have additional control/smooth feedback? I have seen this done before but interested if you had any thoughts

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад +1

      @@patrickanthony3572 I haven’t, tape already has some compression built in, if it’s modelled properly, which I’m sure Softube did. If you want to smooth it then you might want a quicker compressor than an optical, something that might catch the transients. But experiment and see what works, probably compressor before delay. I usually keep things quit simple and more old school for how things are set up. Enjoy the plugin!

      Thanks. I use an Allen & Heath Zed R16. They don’t make them anymore, but each channel fader has a button that lets it transmit midi. There are also 4 dedicated midi faders, 12 midi knobs and 8 buttons. It makes for a lot of midi control.

    Which software delay do you prefer for dub? Seen your Valhalla denos and this. Do you have a preference? Also, have you tried Modnetic, bu Surreal Machines? I have it, along with Replika XT.
    Thanks 🙏

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад +1

      I don’t have a preference really. I use u-he Satin, the Valhalla, TAL Dub X, AudioThing Outer Space, Soundtoys Primal Tap and now the Softube. I’ve heard that Modnetic is really good and I know that Replika XT is good too. It doesn’t matter, if you (we) like the sound then use it. When I listen to dub, I can’t tell one from the next and I’m always fine with whatever the other guy is using. I don’t over analyze the sound of the delay too much. I try to control myself with plugins and not over buy, there are still a lot of other good ones that I don’t own.

      @@JahServant Thanks! I get what you're saying regarding plugins, in general. These days I tend to mostly use my stock stuff for eq, compression and often 'verbs. I have a coupe of extra 3rd-party reverbs, mainly because they do things the stock ones don't. But delays is a but of a weakness. I seem to have no limit in my desire for them ;)
      Modnetic definitely has some nice vibes happening, though perhaps not as dirty as Valhalla can get (Certainly not as flexible, either). RXT is an excellent all-rounder, and has a really great filter section that can be nested in the feedback loop (Peak filter can get pretty raucous).
      I guess I am quite new to the idea of trying my own dub, so was curious about other options. I have a handful to demo (Alberosie, Valhalla, Colour Copy and Outer Space), so will see how I fare. Perhaps I already have all that I currently need, I guess I was just curious which you'd hold onto if you were absolutely forced to choose one ;)

    • @JahServant
      @JahServant  2 года назад +2

      If I had to choose one from what I have, and we’re talking about for dubbing only, then I’d go with the Softube right now. For generic delay duties I’d take Dub X or Valhalla Delay. Keep in mind, there are a lot of other delays that I don’t have and haven’t tried.

      @@JahServant Thanks, again.
      Interesting choice. I did demo the Softube plugin, but couldn't give it much attention during the demo period. And it wasn't really what I was looking for at the time, I guess (This Dub thing is only something I've just started to think about trying). Fortunately, Softube are letting me re-demo the plug again. So will see where it fits into my current demo send channel. I'm testing ReplikaXT and Modnetic (Those I own) against TalDX, Alberosie, ValDelay, OuterSpace and ColourCopy. The ones I'm enjoying the most are RXT, Mod and ValD. Out of those RXT is edging ahead, on account of the excellent filter section allowing some really flexible shaping. Getting a lot more variety of tones out of it. Will be interesting to see how Tape Echos stacks up.
      So far, it's looking like I won't need to spend any money at all (See if TE changes that), although for non-dubby stuff I am quite interested in Timeless 3 ;)
      I'll let you know how I get on with TE. All the best!
