Yes McKenzie method works for me too. However if I stop my daily routine for too long (or sit too much) the symptoms come back. PT for life. I also have a way to do daily decompression in my home which is a game changer. I try to walk 100 miles per month. I don’t want surgery, then another, then another. That is a huge motivator for me.
I hope PT can help - it usually does if a person is consistent, a healthy weight, and watches their sitting time.
      I cheer you on!

I lived with chronic pain for over a decade. I took up cycling 6 months ago and did a recent stint of 7 weeks in physical therapy and i'm 95% pain free now. I had spent the last 13 years living a sedentary life and my back was in worse shape because of the sitting then it ever was from the lifting I'd done in the paramedic career that caused the herniations. Follow your doctor's advice, but, if you CAN be more active, I highly recommend finding something you enjoy doing, be it cycling, swimming, whatever, and doing it RELIGIOUSLY. Also, continue the stretches your PT gives you -- don't blow them off! Those seemingly simple stretches have given me my life back.

I am currently 38 years old. At age 20 I herniated L4-L5. The nerve pain was severe enough, and it had persisted long enough (6months) that my Dr referred me to a neurosurgeon and we discussed surgery. The surgeon recommended waiting it out a little longer, and within about 6 months I had made a complete recovery. I still am prone to back injury; I’m fairly active. But the most important things I have found to manage pain and prevent injury the last 18 years has been maintaining a healthy body weight, and keeping my trunk strong with planks and body weight squats, push-ups, etc. I found these videos recently because I’m in a bout of back pain brought on by long hours of sitting for work and not exercising, but once again I’m optimistic that I can get back to normal.

At the age of 25 I messed up a disc in my lower back pretty gnarly like. It took about 2 years of intense physical therapy regiments to completely heal. And the nerve sheathing is for sure messed up to this day.
I would say the best way to heal is to go on a very long walk (10-15 kilometers) everyday for about 30 days. Until I started doing this I didn’t see a permanent change in my sciatica symptoms.
This is your best bet. Happy Walking.

That was 10 years ago and I'm ok but I absolutely watch how I treat my back because when I do too much that's when my back kills me. I know herniated discs. As a past bodybuilder and powerlifter I have had more than one herniated disc, the first one being a little over 40 years ago. I still get adjusted to prevent any 'flare-ups' and do those exercises every day.

A tip, when mentioning other videos you have done like here where you bring up the one you did on “finding a McKenzie therapist” you should put it on the video at the end so users can click and watch.
This is not only incredibly helpful for your viewers but also keeps people on your content longer which is something that RUclips lives and rewards with more organic reach.
Lastly, you should also put that link in the show notes or written resources of the video for users for all of the same reasons.

Yes it can heal, I have proof from old mri I had done about 10 years ago from a previous back injury. that disc bulge is gone, with time and physical therapy., even though they told me I needed surgery. i had to recently get a mri done for a new back problem, that is hitting my sciatic nerve, and compared the 2 mri. Old bulge is gone, this new one is a totally different area. It just sucks dealing with the pain, so most people rush to get surgery, which should be a last resort. I’m dealing with terrible sciatica pain in my left leg now. I had it last year, got better in about 2 months, but now 6 months later I think I re injured it. I had pain that felt like someone was cutting my leg off. Just terrible. I was hoping to pass out before ever feeling that much pain, but it just didn’t happen. Getting better now every day. Seeing chiropractor, doing decompression, and acupuncture to relieve the tense muscles in my left leg and but.

This was helpful and informative. A question I have: I've had bouts of sciatica on and off for seven years. Currently continuing pain for nine months (had a microdiscotomy 4 1/2 weeks ago, and re-herniated. Same disk, but different location). I've seen various doctors/surgeons, and I always say that it hurts less, or not at all (this is pain in my right thigh) when I ride my bicycle. And not one doctor has commented on that. I'm wondering if you have any insights here (of course, I've been off my bike for five months. Which is difficult, since I normally ride 12 - 15 hours weekly). Thanks for listening!

If I were in yiur shoes I would get immediate surgery. If doctors are discouraging ignore them disregard etc believe on yourself that yes I can heal with the right proper treatment which j believe is minimally invasive spine surgery very soon. I see a lot of comments of people with low back pain, and I'd like to share this with you, if you allow me.
Low back pain, when it does not cause loss of strength and sensation in the lower extremities, is then called A-specific.
Sure there's an anatomical component in the pain but, most of the times, your pain experience is caused by multiple factors. ALSO psychological ones.
I know well that back pain can turn your life into a living hell, but please do not lose hope.
Visit your physio, get advice, inform yourself, but most importantly.. Move!
Just take a walk, go for a cycle, a swim or literally anything that gets you moving and feeling well. You will see that slowly (but sometimes faster than you may expect) you will be back functioning at your best!
The worst things for you are: inactivity, negative mindset, reliance on painkillers, bad habits.
Therapy definitely helps, but is YOU who has to do the hardest part. And YOU can do it!

What I wanted to share with this community is the fact that according to MRI I have 2 annular lesions with caudal migration of nucleus pulposus and root compression, and I've been living with it for 10 years.
Even if I had a lot of pain in the past, now my activity level has probably never been higher, and I have absolutely no pain or limitation in anything.
My point is that every patient is different. Surgery can be an option, yes, but I suppose conservative treatment is the first route to take.

I do run twice a week and train in the gym 2-3 times a week. Last summer I completed a 800km 30 day hike with a 12kg backpack without symptoms connected to back pain.
I've never been into high impact or team sports, so I don't know how my body would cope with them.
And to be fair I am a bit scared of so called "damaging" exercises such as kettlebell swings, deadlift or sit ups. Might well be able to do them without issues, but I am genuinely a bit scared so I never tried them out.
About the MRI I can't tell you much details as I'm not a radiologist, all I can do is read the written report.

If you have the same issues, switch your chair to a cheap solid one you can buy from Ikea for like 10 USD - no cushion or anything that softens it. Sit with a wider stance than you normally would to give yourself more support and distribute your weight. Do planks, wall sits, push-ups and deadlift a light weight but make yourself do a hip-hinge with your back totally neutral. When you're standing, imagine you're trying to tear a piece of paper with your feet by spreading them away from each other - you should feel your glutes tensing. It's not quick process but it will work if you do it right. The type of seat and time spent sitting are really important factors though

@@jessejames6123 hope it works out for you mate, I've had it a while and people were giving me all kinds of advice. Don't give up hope. One other thing, you might want to try is to avoid bread/pastries and milk. Just keep the diet pretty green, some apple cider vinegar and turmeric to help keep inflammation at bay and let your body heal. I've also started sleeping more on my side with a pillow between my knees. This is all anecdotal, but hope it helps
