    Back pain can be so debilitating and at times depressing! You start thinking about when things were “normal” and you could move around without giving a second thought to sitting, standing, bending, etc. Basic things in life becomes hard to do and it takes a toll on mental health when several months / years have gone by without much improvement! The thing that helps me to keep my self positive is to think of the ones who are suffering even more than you and be greatful! For example, someone who is paralyzed and can’t even move has it even harder vs being able to move even if it’s with pain. Hopefully, looking at things this way might brighten your day!

    I had a severely herniated disc and had surgery in May of 2023. It’s November 2023 and some of my sciatica came back. These simple excercises along with walking a treadmill at 15 degrees for 20 minutes a day (at a comfortable speed) har made it go from shooting pain to a dull ache, and now it’s pretty much nonexistent. I had two herniated discs I put up with for a few years - some days not too bad & others - painful. Finally got so bad I couldn't even put my foot down without it feeling like a blowtorch was being applied to my whole leg. MRI found one moderate herniated disc and one severe. My surgeon said therapy wouldn't help so I promptly had a micro discectomy. Felt so great to wake up in the recovery room with no sciatic pain! By evening, they had me up & walking down the hall & back. By next late afternoon, I went home. Had to wear a back brace for 6 weeks & told to walk at least 20 minutes a day to strengthen muscles. This was 25 years ago.

    Eureka! This is an old video, but it contains the one tidbit that led to my back healing. My stubborn bulging disc would not stop aggregating the nerve. McKenzie presses were not really helping. The inversion table felt good, but as soon as I was upright, the pain got much worse than before. The secret was a towel under my pelvis while in banana roadkill position. Just a little tweak to the angle of my pelvis and there was instant improvement from the first press up! After two years of looking for a solution, this stretch reduced my pain from excruciating to barely noticeable in a few days! Thank you for the tip that saved me!

    Been suffering with Sciatica for nearly 1.5 months. It has gotten alot better over the weeks and only hurts when I'm sitting, but I finally had reached a standstill. Started doing the "push up" and at first the pain in my glute was horrible. After about 5 repitions, I noticed the pain was going away fast and my range of motion improved. By the 7th rep, I was able to push all the way up with barely anything in the glute. I went to 12. Gave it a rest for a few minutes then tried 12 again. The first 4 reps were a little painful in the glute, but went away by the 5th rep. Anyone trying this, if you can only go part way, do a bunch of reps only part way. Keep at it. Or more is better , one other tips are actually your sleeping position, like your bed hardness , pillow , spine pillow, and pillow on your legs, if every morning you wake up and feels more pain, you have to switch your sleeping style !

After 6 weeks I started walking a little then eventually shooting FT’s then playing after about 2 months. As a physical therapist, I can tell you it was my iliopsoas ( I don't have a herniated disc) and it took WEEKS of the correct exercise, and muscle inhibition to see improvement. But with that said, prone took away the sciatic pain, and with continued daily positioning I was able to centralize the pain. But the big key is, as these guys know, is it takes diligence in positioning daily in your pain relieving position to reduce nerve irritation. Great vid guys

I just had an MRI today. The reason I’m writing is because of your teaching on how we hurt our lower backs even when picking up something lightweight like a pencil. Your suggestion to bend our knees is a good one but I have bone on bone knees and cannot stress them like that. I was playing ball with my new puppy and realized I was picking up the balls the wrong way, soooo I borrowed my mother’s “grabber” and it worked perfectly! I’m so happy I wanted to share. Now if I drop anything I use the grabber to pick it up!

    Omg it's literally 12am and one of those nights where I can find ZERO comfort in any slesp positions. I'm nearly in tears due to pain and frustration. It took a year to determine what may have been sciatica or something else to getting an MRI this week that confirmed two buldging disc. I usually put a rolled pillow under my pelvis or a pillow between my knees because I felt like that was something I always saw people do but found no relief. The pain brought me to youtube to find SOMETHING ANYTHING that will help. I swear laying on the double pillow vertically gave me relief immediately, as soon as I tried it I can feel the pressure, the pain, everything just easing up. I will take an improvement of any sort as a victory. I may get a good night's rest tonight. This video was so informational! I am also happy to know I may not be too far gone and there could be hope to correcting this issue. Who knew a short video would help with an issue I've been suffering with for 3 years! Just wanted to express a heartfelt thank you to you guys! - a grateful new subscriber!!!

      Hey Brittany, I just got my MRI results back a month ago. However, my pain is actually getting better. Believe it or not, if you obsess over doing sit-ups with an ab mat, your pain will get much better. Throw in some dead bug exercises and you will be good to go. It takes patience and you have to obsess over getting your core strong, but the pain will subside nearly instantly when you start doing sit-ups. You may need to do assisted sit-ups to start, but that’s totally fine. Hopefully this helps.

    • @lanyburnett7966
      @lanyburnett7966 5 лет назад +4

      Brittany W I could tell the sit-ups were helping after about a week. The key it to make sure you do them on some kind of mat. I use a Rogue Wise Crack ab mat that works really well. I think it puts the right amount of pressure on your low back and discs while still engaging your core muscles. They were really painful at first and I had to assist myself doing them with using my arms under my legs. Now, I do minimum 400 every other day unassisted. Pain went from a 10 in November when I could barely role out of bed, to a 1 or 2 on the worst days now. I still have to be careful with deadlifts, but I am back to doing most exercises again. You really have to obsess with making your core stronger. That’s the key. Hopefully this helps! And if you’re curious, I have disc bulge at L5-S1 and at L4-L5.

I walked 3 miles this morning and about 2 1/2 miles into the walk my right sciatica began to burn from my waist to my knee ( I have very little feeling from knees to above my ankles and almost no feeling in my feet.). This banana exercise helped tremendously after about 3 minutes. It also helped my wife's hip pains. Thank you so much.
    Are there other exercises you would recommend? I try to be careful, but I refuse to accept the classic results of my condition. In April 2020 I could not walk and was in constant severe pain, 8 and above. I have not had surgery, I have had steroids injected and the leaking disk at l5 s1 has stopped leaking. There is always pain but it is manageable if I don't overdo things( I usually do).

What a difference 20 years of dealing with sciatica, degenerative disk disease, getting hit by a semi truck, and lots of painful days. I definitely wonder if I had been sent to a competent therapist in the very beginning if instead of having my pain come and go like a bad cold for years. If I had actually found exercises to strengthen the area I can’t say for sure it would have helped. I definitely know by the time I was sent. I was injured healed and repeat many times. To the point that I wasn’t able to do the therapy by the time I got the opportunity. To anyone on the fence about wether or not to do this. Take it from someone who’s lost there ability to do many things. Try it and don’t give up the worst thing that can happen is it won’t work. At least you’ll know you tried. Peace and Love

I have an MRI booked to investigate but I wanted to thank you for all your videos. They are a tremendous help. For me it’s the ‘half press ups’ that really help. Thank you and keep up the great work!

    I herniated my disc while deadlifting. It popped and I fell to the ground in pain. Was out of the gym for about 3 months total. I immediately iced it for the first 72 hours. Took ibuprofen, and got as much rest as I could. The first 4-5 days were absolutely terrible. Agonizing pain! Couldn’t sit, crawl into bed, and I certainly couldn’t walk. However, around the 6th day, the pain had calmed down a little bit! I began walking again but by walking I mean tiny baby steps… if I took a large step it killed me. Began heat therapy then, and continued resting. Around a month later, I was able to crawl into bed and began walking a little better and fuller steps. Another month went by, and symptoms only improved more. Gradually, I could walk again like normal. Now the nerve still hurt… couldn’t stretch my legs fully without it hurting. That still continues to this day. But stretching and working out again has helped that pain subside a lot. Only time it hurts now is if I walk long distances. It will begin aching after I walk a while. But I just wanted to say you may feel serious pain, depression, and boredom while your disc is herniated. But please know the body is absolutely incredible and the disc will heal!!! You will be back in the gym I promise. Stay focused on recovery and the quicker you’ll be back.
    Edit: What helped me most with recovery is Epsom Salt baths. An absolute must.

      @@CarlosDiazAustralia overall, the returning process was relatively smooth. After a full 3.5 months of injury recovery time, I could tell my body was ready to get back in the gym. My strength was still there which was great. The only thing that was difficult and still is to this day, is leg day and lower back workouts… the pain is certainly noticeable the next couple days after those. And I believe it’s nerve pain. However, a lifting belt became my best friend! That’s what gave me the confidence to lift heavy again. I wear it with every workout regardless the body part being trained. I will never workout without it again.

    I suffered with sciatica for 25 years before I finally saw a chiropractor because I was such a skeptic. I felt like an idiot when I realized that one session fixed my back for two years. I then had to go back for another session and that lasted for another three years. Obviously I had to change my habits which meant no more snow shovelling as that was the number one cause of the flare-ups so I went back for a third time and have been fine for the past five years until recently I started having the same pain. I havent had a good nights sleep in weeks and now I am more than 5000km from my chiropractor which is what led me here. I am hoping that by following your insructions that I will get some relief as I'm in the middle of renovating my home and the wife is running out of patience waiting for things to get done. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us common folks gentlemen.
