First and foremost, 2 years ago on 26 April 2019, I completed 23 years,8 months and 11 days in uniform. I wanted to be a Soldier since the age of 5. It was my life. You don't change who you are, you change how you dress. You will always be a Soldier. Thank you sir.

I will never forget the last day i drove out of the gates... took off my cammies on friday evening and was standing in formation monday morning at the police academy of a major city. That was over 25 years ago. You will always cherish your days in uniform but new adventures await. You will have to get accustomed to civilians. They are a sh$&tshow.

I retired after 21 years, the last time i wore my uniform was to give a speech at my daughter's elementary school on Veteran's day, spoke to the kids about what being a Soldier meant to me, answered a lot of questions, and explained what every patch and medal meant on my uniform..seemed a fitting way to wear it the last time..Congrats Sir! Enjoy your family!

24 Years, retired in 2003. The one thing that saved me a lot in the civilian world, was having the mindset that I was a soldier. No matter what setbacks befell me, or forced job changes, relocations, etc. I just picked myself up dusted myself off and drove on with the mission. They can take the soldier out of the Army, but they can't take the soldier mindset out of you. Congratulations and God Speed!

2 years ago dad retired E-9 with 38 years. His last few drill weekends (3 day weekends) they thanked him by just giving him time to relax and see friends that he might not see again. His last duty day was also his retirement ceremony... he wanted it small and when most had gone home... it was very touching and multiple walked him out and gave him a hug.
I definitely get how hard it was for him to walk away on the last day. These days he is retired from everything but has a consulting business and is on base all over the country on a semi-regular basis so he is still “serving” just in civilian clothes. He will never fully separate from the AF I don’t think.

@@MyGirlsPlusMe Hello sir! It been 2 years now. How has life as a civilian puke been treating you? 😉 I don't mind telling you sir that It's been a difficult transition for me to say the least. I have had several jobs but nothing that I felt was a good fit for me. I am 50 years old now and it feels like most employers out there shy away from hiring older folks like myself. Especially military.
As much hype I used to hear about civilian employers wanting to hire veterans I can say, at least in our neck of the woods, that is not the case. I could be mistaken but sometimes I get the impression that some civilian employers may be afraid to hire someone with a military background. They may feel I am too set in my ways and will not be easy to "reprogram" to their ways of doing things. They may also prefer younger moldable minds. Currently I am doing rideshare to stay busy and to earn some additional income. Wife works. Cost of living has significantly gone up here in Tampa Florida since we moved here in 2012. Every year or so our rent goes up. Majority of my retirement pay goes to rent/utilities. I am sure you guys have felt economic pinch as well. The pandemic sure didn't help things.
There is going to be point where we may have to move elsewhere. About 3 months back I applied to work at our County's Sheriff's Office. Would be working in their vehicle fleet maintenance office. As you can imagine It's a long hiring process given that you have to go through an extensive screening process/background check, polygraph, personal references, neighbor references etc.... It's the job I had during my time in the military so it should be an easier transition/better fit for me than the other jobs I worked.
Well sir, I hope i didn't bore you with my sob story. I do hope you guys are doing well and wish you all the best in this new chapter in your lives. Stay frosty! 👍

After being retired for 30 years, watching this brings back the anguish and feeling of dread. It is true more often than not "old soldiers never die" you will eventually become something else, but "always a soldier!" Civilian contemporaries will always look to you in times of stress, when trouble of any kind finds your friends, you will be the first person they look to - that will never change as long as you live. We do continue to serve the country, just without the uniform and certain authority it brings.

@@lukecondron7881 best of luck with it, cadet competition is fairly hard given we’re a small defence force and the intake isn’t huge so they can really take their pick from the best.. If you know an officer try get them to help you prep, same goes for an NCO’s in the Military Collage, if you know any use them to prep you. Another tip, visit your family GP and get the once over so you can correct any medical conditions which might have you fail the army medical. The medical is where they’re really tough, it’s so easy to fail the medical so get that all clear before you go, I can’t stress this enough. Get fit now and stay fit!. The fitness test is tough for civilians and it’s a pass/fail test. You might be given some leeway on the push ups sit ups but you won’t be given any on your run, really put in the effort before the test.. Best of luck, and if you don’t get a cadetship go enlisted and chase a commission through the enlisted ranks. Good luck

He lives in this 5th Wheel trailer full time. He is a weather camper. Camps in Florida in winter and Connecticut in summer. He was headed to Connecticut to see dying cousin. His wife passed years ago and most of family. The VA state trooper called Jimmey's Auto and truck service. Jimmey moved the trailer to his business and hooked up electricity. I found out about Dave from my brother who is homeless in Lake City Fl and camps near him. I met hime briefly 3 years ago when visiting my brother. Dave has been stranded now for 19 days. His truck was hauled to a repair shop in Hopewell VA, but they could not find a transmission. It was delayed because they ordered wrong model number. After wasted time, Jimmey's moved to another shop. This time, mechanics will repair the transmission. This vet is hard of hearing and uses a hearing aid. His health is in bad shape as diabetes takes it toll. I have started a gofundme page to help Dave as the transmission cost is around $2500. I bring him home to was clothes, do a bath, and take him to breakfast. This veteran never ask for anything. I am a 22 year vietnam combat vet myself. Https://gofund.me/455ef0ab. many thanks for your service. I put six years in, Lebanon, Grenada, NATO Europe 81 through 87. I didn't want to drag my family around the world as I had just gotten married. I came home raised Three Sons, divorced and single parent, I plodded on. It was a very rough road I took coming home. However my kids were raised in a small farming town, where they learned to hunt and fish, and enjoy the great outdoors. All three went on to master's degrees in college. While my life was rough, theirs turned out great. I write this to remind everyone that there are different paths to take. Do I wish I'd stayed? No I'm glad I came home for my kids sake. I look back on the years I spent, I am a lifer in the VFW, and enjoy many fun conversations with other veterans, who took the same path, as well as those that went on to 20 years and more. The 20-year career is a great thing and I would encourage anyone beginning this journey, to finish it. Put your 20 in, then head into a civilian or government career to supplement your military service time. The 30-plus years that I have been out, are filled with a lot of wonderful memories and so I know I took the right path in my own case. Still... There is the what if... And that's something I can't answer and never will be able to. For those that are beginning the journey, stay the course and do your 20. If you can. But at the same time, don't feel that you have put yourself out by going home, or choosing a different path. The substance of life for my children in the 30-plus Years I have been a civilian, are filled with so many memories... Things that can never be replaced either. Sorry this is long, but I feel it's important to do both the career military person, and those like me who choose to leave, the justice of personal choice. Many prayers and thanks to all of you who have served or are embarking on that Journey. You are definitely appreciated.

Everyone pays attention to the bad. You highlighted the cultivation of the military experience, it’s not all about the highs, it’s the lows as well. You experience life at it’s extremes, it’s moderates, and it’s mellows. Wether you make it a career, or it is just phase, no one has come in, and left the same individual they did years ago. It’s a complicated relationship, to put it mildly. Fair winds and following seas on the path ahead; Semper Fi.

It was probably the scariest move to retire after 24 years in the Canadian Army. Like you said its a lifestyle good or bad that ensures you are taken care of and isolated from the concerns of civilian life. After 19 years I have adjusted to the norms of civilian life and love it, but I know that my brothers and sisters still have my back when needed. Enjoy this time with your girls, you have all made sacrifices and now's the time to enjoy the fruits of you service.

Hanging up that uniform for the last time is very hard and adjusting to the transition into civilian life can be quite a challenge; however, you have a great support system (your family) and you have always been successful at everything you set out to accomplish! Thank you for your highly distinguished service to our country! God Bless the USA!

Thank you, sir, I am currently on the path to become an Officer in the Army. I finished basic training and AIT in December of 2020, now in the Army Reserve Ft Bragg. I've learned a lot over the few days of drilling, and I am hoping to learn more. My Sgts and the other Officers are encouraging me to become Airborne; I am hoping by the end of this year I will have the wings and hoping to have more under my belt before I become an Officer. There are so many opportunities and so little time, it's so mindblowing.

Wow that was beautiful sir, thank you for all your years of service to this beautiful country and the sacrifices you've made throughout your time serving. I hope to some day be the type of man you are. I tried to serve, went to Fort Sill but unfortunately towards the end a broke my ankle and they saw that my feet were so deformed and that I'd have to get surgery that they gave me a medical discharge and I came back home to immediately getting reconstructive surgery on left foot first and then my right. My dream was to make the Army a career and its always something I know I at least tried for. But I'm glad I can visualize it somewhat through my good friends I met at Sill who are off all around the world serving.
